Well, you've read the notes, the notes were confusing, and now it is time for you to post until the confusing cows come home.

And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to the creator of this here site, Mr. Mark Bakalor - even though everything is out of his hands and has finally been brought into current times, he did all the heavy lifting back in November of 2001.

DR George - EGG SALAD AT SUBWAY??   I wonder how long it will take for the bay area to catch on.  I'm a HUGE fan of egg salad.  I can't wait!

I, too, love good egg salad.  It's one thing Art's Deli does well - I have their tri-salad - two scoops of turkey salad, one scoop of egg salad.  But I'm very particular about my egg salad.

It was quite good...just a tad too much mayo, though, but still tasty. :)

There used to be a local restaurant called Jo Mama's and they had some of the best egg salad in town.  They used homemade bread and very large loafs, so the sandwiches were very big, too.  They also had the best locally made pizza.  It was also some of the most expensive pizza in town, but once in a while, it was worth it.

Sadly, they closed a long time ago.

It's not a favorite Gene DePaul, but a strange footnote in the history of The Academy Awards. There was song called Pig Foot Pete which received a nomination for best of the year.

NOTE: This nomination is a mystery. Both the nominations list and the program from the Awards dinner list the song as being from Hellzapoppin', a 1942 release for Awards purposes. The song does not appear in that film, but did appear in Keep 'Em Flying, a 1941 release from the same production company and studio, and was therefore ineligible for a 1942 nomination.

Here is the song from Keep 'Em Flying

One of the stranger songs that Meredith Wilson wrote was called CHICKEN FAT. It was recorded by Robert Preston

But believe it or not Meredith Wilson's biggest money making song was "Til There Was You" thanks to a recording by The Beatles!

And we learn that their favorite American music group is called "Sophie Tucker"

Good morning, all! I will shortly head down to Toyland, where I will meet Rob Berman foe an extensive look at the ROBERTA score. I must also call Kim Criswell, who's staying at agent Jim Wilhelm's, and, meet up with her over the weekend.

DR JohnG, I know nothing about recording plans for the Blitzstein. Yesterday afternoon, after the lunch break, the lady composer who's supervising this summer series showed up to listen. I thought she behaved badly.

I got home to find a nice email from Anne Swisher Oakley, a grade school-high school friend I've not seen since 1968. In 1966, she played cello for a Miami University Theatre recording session, possibly my very first orchestration. After that, I lost touch with her and her husband, another friend from grades 1-12, and we've reconnected through our class valedictorian who's now acting as the Middletown Class of 1964 Central. I always loved Anne, and I'm happy that we are back in touch. Whenever I've written a cello line, I think of her.

Ketchuping on late posts from last night:

DR Dear Lurker Iris, and BK, awakened some more nice memories of Westworld.  I had forgotten there was an Old World there, which is absolutely crazy because I probably ate at that one many times.  That, and the one on the Sunset Strip, and -- it seems like there was at least one other.  Beverly Hills?  I know where the Strip one was, but I need help on where the Westwood and any others were located.

And what was the "signature" burger there?  I always had it.  The one with diced onions and spices and herbs and whatnot mixed into the ground beef.  I'm sure I enjoyed many other things there, too, but  --

THE SWINGER PATTY!!  :)

EDIT:  Answering my own question, the B.H. one was at 216 N. Beverly Drive.  Oh, this is interesting.  Bon Appetit, which I loved going to on lunch hours, was at 316, and Nate-n-Al's is at 416.  Don't you love old telephone directories??  But 216 puts Old World into the first block north of Wilshire, and I'm not remembering its appearance there.  Hmmmm...

DR DL Iris also asked about "The Great American Food and Beverage Company".

YES!  But not in Santa Monica.  The jernt on the SW corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica Blvd. was one of those for a while.  I can only remember being there once.  It was a fun place.

As I have always recalled it, their "thing" was "hot pockets" -- all manner of sandwich stuffings served in pita.  Does this agree with what anyone else remembers?

An adjunct to that memory is Record Surplus (I think -- it might have been some other record store) being located at that time (late '70s) across the road on the north side of Santa Monica Blvd.  At some point this same store (I think) moved to Westwood into a building behind the Village Theater.  If this was indeed Record Surplus, then I guess it wasn't long after that they finally located in their long-running store on Pico.

It's the 100th anniversary year of the premier of Igor Stravinsky's ballet, Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring), and there are two new CD box sets out - one with 10 "historically significant" recordings, and one with 38.

I love the score, but even I would not want to listen to it 38 times in a row.       :P

So DR Jane what did you have to do to get your books back on your new nook?

My books returned, well one did easily and the other I just needed to access my Barnes and Noble library and download it again.

With a bit of work I remembered how to download my Overdrive (public library) and get that working again.  I tested I could download a book to be sure it was ok.

I did find where to add the 2nd email address.  Basically all is fine again except for the annoying extra 5 books in my Barnes & Noble wish list that I have purchased.  They even show I have purchased them which is why I can't remove them.

The Nook works as smoothly as a Nook will work so I am very happy.

And speaking of NOOKS, it was my understanding that they are getting rid of/going to stop making their TABLETS but not their regular nook ereaders. And they are not going to stop selling ebooks.  So right now it probably shouldn't be a problem.

I agree with you since the Nook HD is rated as the best reader except for the new iPad.

It is a shame the tablets aren't doing well.

With my Nook working properly I no longer consider switching to the iPad mini.  I might though if the quality of the mini reader improves as the big problem with the Nook is the tablet part is just ok.

Do you not keep all your books on your nook?  I don't take mine off. Just move them to a read folder on my kindle.

But believe it or not Meredith Wilson's biggest money making song was "Til There Was You" thanks to a recording by The Beatles!

And we learn that their favorite American music group is called "Sophie Tucker"

I knew that they'd recorded it, but I'd never heard it before.  It enjoyed it. :)

On this day in 1902, Mr. Richard Rodgers was born!

I'm going to have to listen to "Moon in My Window" later. I think that's my favorite of his melodies.

That's one of my favorite songs from "Do I Hear a Waltz?"

One day I will also upgrade to Blu-Ray, but I am waiting to find an all region blu-ray player that is easy on the pocket-book.

I got mine back in January and it was a little less than $200.  It's great!  It can play any region for both DVD and Blu-ray!  It's a Toshiba, so it's a known brand.

We are relaxing in our room after a smooth train ride from Normal, a wild walk with the hockey fans from Union Station, a quick lunch, and a trip to McCormick Place to finalize my conference registration and purchase an exhibit hall pass for Richard.  In about 90 minutes we'll make our way a few blocks north to the University of Michigan School of Information (Library Science to me) alumni reception.  Hope their repast suffices for our dinner...

The wish list is for books I want to purchase in the future.  Once I purchase a book it should go away from the wish list.  For some reason those 5 books are still in my wish list.  Originally, before the darn shut down & reset they had me do I went from only 2 of those books to a very annoying 5.  No one has any idea why this has happened.

Does your Kindle have a wish list?  I love having a quick list to purchase from when I need a book.

You're lucky.  I have no air conditioner.  And the kind of apartment (condo) that I have makes it not really possible to have one.  Ever since I got my operable skylight, things have been fairly comfortable when it gets really hot outside. :)

Very busy today!

Went to Bon Ton with hubby and made several purchases.  They had a great coupon deal that we could not pass up.
Then on to Lowe's and home depot to look at paint chips.

Then on to Steinmart where I purchased some really cut animal print cigarette (skinnny Jeans.)
I never tried them on.  When I got home I tried them on and they fit great.

Also purchased a beautiful Calvin Klein Black Cocktail dress at Bon Ton.  It is gorgeous.  It is black with lace on the top and back, sort of a sheath style.  That's my favorite style.

We will be attending a wedding in August.  Perfect.  Also our 30th Wedding Anniversay is in Sept so I
may wear it then out to dinner.

Sounds intriguing. Actually, sounds a lot more promising than this Stephen King musical I'm listening to. Some of John Mellancamp's lyrics work, then he tries rhyming "names" with "graves." Worse, he doesn't seem to understand how to write for the theater. A bit of dialogue just stops so a character can sing some interior monologue that covers ground already covered in the dialogue. Nothing worse, in the theater, than a musical where the songs are unnecessary.

I have always agreed with this until I tried our son's  Vegenaise brand of vegan mayo.  It was sweet and delicious.  I don't use mayo enough to keep jars of it now that Craig has moved out.  He lived here for about a year and a half before returning to Maryland to get a teaching degree.

What did you think of "All This Happiness"?

I love Judy Kuhn, so I enjoyed it.  It was not a traditional "theater"-type recording, but a delightful, intimate recording.  A small combo of just drums & percussion, piano and acoustic & electric cello (only three musicians) accompanies her.  Unless someone objects to her song choices or the order of them, I think you'll like it.

I don't spend enough time searching for free or discounted books.

Speaking of discounted, I'm currently reading the $2.99 version from B & N of "A Town Like Alice".  It is my pic for my July book group discussion.  I'm enjoying it immensely.

This conversation did motivate me to search B & N books beginning with the $2.99 and less books.  I was thrilled to find the next book I want to read in the Andy Carpenter series from David Rosenfelt.

With more browsing I added a few books to my wishlist, not discounted, and entered a contest at Goodreads to win "The Ocean at the End of the Lane".  So far I haven't won any books there which might not be such a bad thing because then I would have to read a regular book and review it-lol.

And speaking of NOOKS, it was my understanding that they are getting rid of/going to stop making their TABLETS but not their regular nook ereaders. And they are not going to stop selling ebooks.  So right now it probably shouldn't be a problem.

It's sort of confusing to me how amazon and kindles can be doing so well yet the numbers for B&N were so bad.

Do you only have a tablet now not the regular ereader?

My 7" Nook HD is a tablet.  I like having a tablet vs just an eReader.   I can go to Goodreads and look up books.

I can go to goodreads on my kindle as well. But mostly just to update my reading.  I would love a tablet/Kindle Fire.

I basically use it on my Nook to see look at reviews or see if a book is in my "to-read" file.  I update everything using my computer.

One popular item on the menu was called "The Plank"....it consisted of a 4-6 foot long wooden plank, piled high with chicken, ribs, rice, fruit, and artichokes. It took 2 people to carry it out and place it on the table.

Topic of the Day:

In my CD player:  Judy Kuhn's "All This Happiness"* and right after that will be the original Broadway cast recording of "Kinky Boots."

In my Blu-ray/DVD player:  Season 1 of "Smash."  I know I have a couple of other things, but I don't remember what they are.

*I just noticed that at the end of the booklet for "All This Happiness," there's an ad for "Passion" on PS Classics, but it shows the original picture with Melissa Errico.  Guess that CD was released before the finalizing of "Passion."

I liked it, but I doubt I will listen to it often. And think you nailed it with the comment about the song choices. They're just not what I'd like to hear her sing.

We've got two projects coming up, both of which have had previous CD releases and ones where I've hated the covers.  So, Doug has redone the art for ours - one version of one using the same art (the poster art) but removing a lot of negative black space that was pointless and making the title treatment actually look good.  So, while that's the same art, it looks a million times better and actually has some dynamism now.  The alternate and totally new cover is also very nice - much brighter, no black at all and kind of a grabber.  Which would you choose - you can't see them, but would you automatically go to the poster art, or would you like something completely different.  Of course, we could do one on the front and the other on the back of the booklet - then people could choose.  What do you think.

I'm thinking DR Ginny may have gotten wet this evening.

Fortunately, no, DR Jane.  We were at the Michigan reception during the downpour.  It was a nice affair and, as planned, we met up with my friend who's a librarian at the same university where my niece is golf pro.

To answer your earlier question, many library schools have official reunions during ALA, but this one was "off the books."  I don't know why Michigan stopped having events that get listed in the program book, but I think it happened around the time they removed the L-word from the name of the school.

Sometimes Wikipedia tends to phrase their information in a pecular manner.  Since I didn't know anything about Gene de Paul I sought out wisdom from the Big W.

Quote
De Paul was one of the composers of the songs and dances for the 1954 musical film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers for which he was nominated for the 1983 Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Strange?

I'm glad you missed the downpour.

I don't think Keith knew about the school reunions.  He did say occasionally he would see someone from school at the conventions.

I wish I had known you when I went to my one and only in New Orleans.  I might have even gone to more if I knew someone there.  I think I went out with Keith for a winter one.  That was after his father died & I was there to help his mother move, only she kindly moved before we arrived and all I had to do was drive her around to do errands.  That would have been after the last big earthquake.

That is hotter than here.  Our thermostat is currently reading 89 degrees.  We have the air conditioner on.  What a difference from a couple of days ago when I was complaining about the cold.

You're lucky.  I have no air conditioner.  And the kind of apartment (condo) that I have makes it not really possible to have one.  Ever since I got my operable skylight, things have been fairly comfortable when it gets really hot outside. :)

Why?  Don't you have any windows?

This sounds like a soundtrack, and I would think that most people would prefer a version of the original poster art.  Having a variation of it would be nice and make it obvious that it's a different release.  But since you've had the alternate/new cover made, you might as well use it, too.  I'd vote to use both.

De Paul was one of the composers of the songs and dances for the 1954 musical film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers for which he was nominated for the 1983 Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Strange?

Very. :-\

I didn't know about this!  I just set my DVR from here at work to record it!  ;D

George, you do know that it is on at 10, instead of 9:00.

Yes, I searched and found the title and didn't pay attention to the time.  I just set my DVR to record the show.  I got home and it had recorded!

It is supposed to be near 100 degrees this weekend.  :P

It's more that I spend most of my time on my second floor, but there are no doors on the inside of my house, except for the bathrooms.  So, none of the coldness would stay where I'd want it...and up in my bedroom on the third floor, there isn't a real "window," just a skylight that only opens up about six inches and has a screen that doesn't come out.

Can someone help me? I put a cd on my ipod, and when I try to eject it, it says: "The ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files in use by another application."

What does that mean, and how do I eject the ipod?

Wish I could help you, Laura. Did you try powering the iPod off?

I would recommend shutting off your computer.  But since it's after midnight on the left coast, I assume that you did.

Tonight, I was supposed to work concessions for a local dance studio's end-of-year performance, but they didn't have enough ushers, so I took tickets for the pre-show instead.

There were over 700 pre-sold tickets and they only had about 8 ushers...they usually want 15 for a ticketed event!

But they just couldn't get people to sign up.  Maybe because it's the last event at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts for the season, AND they're going to remodel the outside façade.

Yes!  I hate to say it though, but I can't keep my eyes open.  I'm going to go to bed now.

Good night, singdaw!

So far, the Bacharach box set has gotten pretty lousy reviews on Amazon...

What a wacko thirty minutes I just had and I forgot to have fun in the notes so I'll do that tomorrow.  Basically, the computer was trying to do a back-up and couldn't find the Time Capsule - this happens way too frequently for my taste, maybe once every two months - and then the entire computer froze and I couldn't open iPhoto, Word, couldn't post the notes, nothing.  So, I shut it all down, unplugged the Time Machine then re-plugged, then started the computer up again.  Everything's fine now and notes are posted and computer is doing backup so I'll be up until two now.
