Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pipsqueak notes, and now it is time for you to post until the pipsqueak cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MICKLE!

Just for comparisons:

Morning all.
That is all.

The whole Gene de Paul issue is not that strange. The Wiki thing is worded very badly but 7 Brides was made into a stage musical and played on Broadway in 1982. It was, shall we say, a weak season that year. The show was nominated for Best Score but nothing else.
Here are the nominees for Best Musical for the 1983 Tony Awards
Cats (Winner)
Blues in the Night (Directed by Bruce's friend Sheldon Epps)
Merlin (with Nathan Lane)
My One and Only (with Tommy Tune and Bruce's friend Twiggy)
7 Brides starred Debby Boone and David Carroll and was not treated especially well by the critics.
It began previews on June 25, 1982, it opened on July 8, 1982 and it closed on July 11, 1982 for a total of 15 previews and 5 performances.
It opened in 1982 but because the Broadway season now goes from May to May, the July 1982 opening put the show into the 1983 Broadway season. It was one of the first shows to open in that season, along with Blues in the Night which opened on June 2nd 1982. It was also not successful, running for only 53 performances at the now demolished Rialto Theatre but besides being directed by Bruce's friend Sheldon Epps, one of it's stars is also an FOB (Friend of Bruce) Debbie Shapiro (as she called herself then).
Enough Broadway history.
This afternoon we are going to the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center to see Syd Chaplin's silent movie, The Missing Link.

How does one put a CD into one's Ipod? I thought the Ipod was that little thing you carry around with you.....
Did DR LAURA mean she was putting the MUSIC from a CD onto her Ipod?
Did she ever get her CD out of wherever it was?

Today is a work day. Oh well.
-
It's too darn hot. Just thought you all should know. Pass it on to Cole Porter.
-

slept in and now must get my self in gear
-
Good morning, all! I slept until 8:45, bathed, dressed and I need some coffee.
I will shortly call Ms Kim Criswell and see if we can get together today. I look forward to seeing her and catching up.
Today is Frank Loesser's birthday. I will listen to Liz Callaway's album of his songs, produced by Mr Bruce Kimmel.

Good morning!

Good morning.
-
Good morning, all.
I believe it is Saturday?
-
Oy! I pulled a Vixmom myself last night, dozing off at the computer.
-
Looks to be a sunnier, DRIER day today, and maybe even this evening. At least they're saying "isolated" thunderstorms...
-
Boy, the people are going to be REALLY excited this evening when I inform them it's Frank Loesser's birthday!!
-
Good Morning All!!

TOD:
Death Trap, (Only saw the movie), but I loved it, Great Mystery, Could not figure it out!
Harvey (Same as above, except for the Mystery part) And of course Jimmy Stewart is the best!
-
I was thinking today How great it must be to write a book.
My brother Ray has written several. I have not read them it.
Will see him today and ask if I can read them.
-
DR BK,
I believe you said when you are writing a story, you take it all of your experiences in your day to day life and create and apply your thoughts on paper or computer.
-
I sort of do the same things while writing songs. They have to mean something and apply to myself or others.
-
DR BK,
Can you give me some tips on how to write?
-
Me and Jerry (my hubby) are going to my sis-in-law's wine tasting party.
We are not wine drinkers, but she is also having a luncheon, so it should be fun.
Personally, I'm a beer drinker. Love my beer (LOL)
Only drink on occasion!
-
I just noticed that I have just become a Sr. Member!!
I really enjoy this forum!
-
BK, that SHANE looks like quite the coup. Sounds like some congrats are in order.
What I'd be interested to know is which two books that dealer was so hungry to snatch up in return? And of course I'll understand if it's not something you care to post.
-
DR Kate, you'll become a Senior here before you know it!!
-
Get me off this page!!!
-
TWO!
-
I just spoke to Ms Criswell and I will meet her at 5:00. I'm off to do the laundry and tidy up the apartment.
-
I'm up, I'm up, barely. Thanks to the computer freeze, I didn't get to bed until two again so I slept right up until the doorbell rang just now.
-
As soon as I have my wits about me I'll jog. I'm sure it's already very hot out.
-
Good (late) morning, all.
Already had the oil changed and ran to the library. Got a Fritz Lang film called "Human Desire" with Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame and Broderick Crawford. Looks like fun.
-
G'morning, all.
Song of the day in L.A. - TOO DARN HOT.
-
Congrats on landing "Shane," BK. Beautiful cover.
-
Speaking of Miss Criswell, the library has just ordered "Hysteria," so I shall be hearing her in the near future.
-
This is the Shane I like

TOD:
J.M. Barrie's "What Every Woman Knows"
Wodehouse's "The Play's the Thing"

I love it!

The trades involved two pricey books that the dealer had customers for - that's why it was so easy - one a pristine (but not as pristine as my own copy, which is also signed) of a rare Ray Bradbury book, one of his first, and one almost impossible to find with a non-faded spine (both my copy and the trade had no fade at all - very unusual) - Bradbury, which I got at the right time, has jumped up in value about three hundred percent since his passing. The other was my extra copy of the original French paperback (the way it first came out) of Vertigo (Des Entres les mortes) - a book almost impossible to find. I found two several years ago that were actually reasonably priced - both were on the ABE and just sitting there like so much fish because, I think, both dealers listed it under the French title (they were French dealers) and the word "Vertigo" didn't appear in their listing. Neither copy was what you'd call pristine, but both were very good. I kept one for the collection and have had the other just sitting in the closet. Then I saw a listing for it, a copy in about the same condition for so much money it made my head spin. This dealer had a Hitch collector and he was desperate for it and that completed the trade. I think he's actually getting enough for that to cover his entire cost of what he paid for Shane, so the rest is gravy for him. As for me, if you think about what I paid for the two trades, I got Shane REALLY cheap, which is amazing given what certain dealers are charging for it.

Time to jog.

ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN
John G, THE PLAY'S THE THING is by Fredric Molnar, I believe. Saw a great production of it at the Cincy Playhouse years ago with an actual swimming pool on stage.

According to the Facebook Forbidden Musicals page where this was originally posted, it's Yul Brynner.

THE PLAY'S THE THING is P.G. Wodehouse's adaptation of Molnar's Hungarian play, usually titled "Play At The Castle" (I have no idea what the actual Hungrian title is!). Tom Stoppard's comedy "Rough Crossing" is also based on the Molnar comedy. I have no idea how closely either follows the original Molnar.
-
it's Yul Brynner!
I really LOVED him in that role!
-
Finally getting around to watching the NY Phil/Lincoln Center Carousel.
I'm noticing, however, that they didn't use the Leslie Uggams variant lyric for "June is Bustin' Out all Over"... ::)
-
I enjoyed YUL TIED CAROL, his Carol Channing duets album.
-
Happy belated birthday to Mark Bakalor!
-
I love it!
Coincidentally, it was on STARZ at 12:05 today . I recorded it and look forward to seeing it!
-
Wonderful, about the book trades. Pure book porn. Always fascinating. Seriously, I could read about book collecting all day.
My one little VERTIGO possession, besides a couple of lobby cards:

Correct! He looks amazing. It is from a movie called "The Magic Christian" which I have never seen.

The original French title was "D'Entre Les Morts" which translates to Between Deaths.
Pierre Boileau also wrote "Celle qui n'était plus" which was made into the classic film Diabolique
(http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTcwNzc5MjI5Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNjIwMzc5._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_.jpg)
-
Correct and I have both in their original French first editions - images coming momentarily.
-
Here's the cover of my first edition of the original French Vertigo - a softcover original in France.
-
And the cover of my first edition (softcover original that interestingly has a dust jacket - sometimes the French did the softcovers that way (lots of the original Simenon books of that era are paperbacks with jackets) of what became Diabolique.
-
Those two books are really rare and very pricey - I was lucky on both and got them literally for almost peanuts. The Vertigo book sells for no less than 5,000 bucks and the Diabolique for anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000. Pretty amazing. To say I got them for less than 5% of those prices would be correct - much less.

Anybody see Hyde Park Yet??
We may watch it tonight on Movies on Demand.

First I'll look to see whats on TCM and AMC!

I won't complain about our heat wave. Actually I wouldn't complain anyway as I like it warm even though I'm sitting in the cool air conditioned house.

Greetings from Day #2 of the Taste of Tacoma. Well, of course, I am not actually at the Taste, but I can smell all the food, hear all of the bands, and see all of the people. I just happen to be about 100 yards from the actual event. Still the crowds are huge this year, probably due to the hot weather (86 degrees?).
-
Saturday late afternoon greetings! We were at McCormick Place by 9am and had a full day crawling the exhibit hall. I went to 2 sessions, both author programs. The first was the author of THE ENCORE CAREER HANDBOOK and the second was a panel of 4 authors, including Josh Hanagarne, THE WORLD'S STRONGEST LIBRARIAN. My AAUW friend Cindy, who lives here in Chicagoland, joined us and it was fun to show off ALA to a non-librarian.
-
I was in awe of the ALA when I finally got to see it. I'm looking at my little magnetic paperclip holder I got there. Do you still receive tons of gifts as you walk around?
-
Get me off this damn page. I'm watching the two-hour Harold Lloyd documentary on the Criterion Safety Last Blu and Ray.
-
For newer DR's who might not know why I would be at a gathering of librarians.......
A long time ago Keith was a librarian at Cal Tech in Pasadena. After Bryan was born he found a job working for a publishing company selling books to librarians.
While at Cal Tech he started a rare book library that we have been told still exists today.
-

There's still a lot of stuff to be had, DR Jane, but I'm pretty careful about what I pick up. I did get a free copy of the encore career book and had it autographed and some cool postcards from Lonely Planet travel books that I'm going to have framed.
-
... After Bryan was born he found a job working for a publishing company selling books to librarians...
Not just any company, though. A major library vendor that provides the shuttle bus service for these conferences. Thank you, Keith!

Oh, and Richard got a hat from THE NEW YORK TIMES.

Well, that was many years & many moves later. He didn't come up with the idea but he did reinstate it. :)

After all these years it is nice to know the buses are still running.

Nice!
I remember I kept saying I wasn't a librarian and people would say take it anyway :) I mostly got books to read. I had to leave it all with Keith so I couldn't have too much. After leaving the convention I hopped on one of the buses to downtown New Orleans. :)

Good Evening brother Kevin!
-
Kev,
Just returned a little while ago from Sharon and John's house.
We were invited for a wine tasting luncheon.
It was very nice, Jess was there, and Ray and Jane.
Beautiful House, I had never been there.
-
Kev, I was telling them you are coming home next Saturday. Sharon said too bad she could of had the wine tasting party then!
-
Kev,
Did you see Hyde Park yet?

-
Oh Kevin, where are you??
-
Question for eveyone:
What is your favorite James Stewart Movie?
-
My ground beef patty with cheese did not smell or taste nearly as good as the food at the Taste of Tacoma.
-
I would love to own a First Edition Book.
I guess my choices would be Gone With The Wind, A tale of Two Cities, Rebecca, Silas Marner,
Little Woman, Les Mis, Etc Etc ......
-
Kevin you never answered Me.
Oh Brother Where Art Thou? LOL
-
Hello, Kate. Sounds like you had a good time!
-
Kev,
Did you see Hyde Park yet?
Is that a TV show?
-
Oh Kevin, where are you??
I think it is cute you are looking here for your brother :)
-
I'm watching the PBS show about the Annie revival on Broadway. It was fun seeing BK's friend Todd Ellison, who was at Joe Allen with the HHW group last year.
-
Kevin you never answered Me.
Oh Brother Where Art Thou? LOL
You do have my phone number, I think!
-
I would really love to see an ALA convention some day! Is it always held in Chicago>?
-
Kevin, No, Hyde Park is a movie based on President Roosevelt's life. Bill Murray plays him
It is on Movies on Demand on our cable channel.
-
I would love to own a First Edition Book.
I guess my choices would be Gone With The Wind, A tale of Two Cities, Rebecca, Silas Marner,

We have Gone With the Wind.
I would like David Copperfield. We had the opportunity to purchase a Dickens manuscript, or part of one. I can't remember. While tempting it wasn't one that I wanted and not worth the price to me, or to pursue if it was authentic.
-
I'm watching the PBS show about the Annie revival on Broadway.
For those who have watched - who is the Mrs. Hannigan who is shown briefly when they show the performance clip near the end of the documentary? It didn't look like Jane Lynch to me.
-

Did you read my posts! ;)

Oh, and Richard got a hat from THE NEW YORK TIMES.
Does anyone still ... (etc.)

Well I'll be signing off for now.
Goodnight Kevin and everyone!
-
DR's Cilla & Laura, this is for you.
;D
-
DR Singdaw here is a list of past conferences:
http://www.ala.org/conferencesevents/past
-
DR Jane,
How great it must be to own the First Edition of Gone With the Wind"
-
Can you post a picture of it sometime?
-
Goodnight everyone Again.
-
Did you read my posts!
Whoops - sorry; missed your N.O. reference. I just remember someone telling me once that because it was such a large annual conference, there were only a limited number of places that could accommodate it.
-
Thanks for the list, DR Jane. It looks like they indeed cycle through a shorter list of venues that can handle such numbers.
-
Does anybody still ... (etc.)
Some people can carry it off, and some (like me) really can't. :)
-
I'm watching the PBS show about the Annie revival on Broadway.
For those who have watched - who is the Mrs. Hannigan who is shown briefly when they show the performance clip near the end of the documentary? It didn't look like Jane Lynch to me.
I tried to record the show last night but for some reason my PBS station has not been working all day. It is very odd. The screen is black and it says "we are having difficulties". IT's odd it's been this way since last night.
-
I wish the dates and locations for the ALA conferences went back farther. I'm pretty sure it was in L.A. in January of 1994. I can't imagine why else all those people from Keith's office would have been there. We stayed at a nice hotel in downtown which was a novelty for me. I had dinner one night at the hotel with everyone and one night Keith took them all to El Cholo's on Western Avenue.

I would guess it's Kate Finneran, who originated the role in the revival.
-
Well, I've been at work for the last few hours and it's time for me to leave. I'm going to my sister's for some homemade cinnamon rolls! :D
And then a little later tonight, I'm going to see a world premiere play called, "The Abolitionist's Wife." I've heard that it's very good.
Until later!
-

That's ok, it got me to look it up as well. Keith traveled so much I couldn't always remember why he was in a location. I'm lucky he retired when Craig went off to college and I got to keep Keith home. On the downside I was free to travel more with him just as the trips stopped.
On the rare occasions I did get to travel with Keith we used his air miles for the flight & my hotel accommodations were of course free. It was rare that I got to tag along for business dinners and a real treat for me, especially when the dinners were at top restaurants in New Orleans-YUM!!!!!
-
Perhaps I'll talk about first editions in tomorrow's notes - with photographs.
-
Thanks for the list, DR Jane. It looks like they indeed cycle through a shorter list of venues that can handle such numbers.
I was amazed in New Orleans at the numbers of librarians, and their families, I met everywhere I went. It also made me feel very safe roaming on my own as I did.
-
Finished the Lloyd documentary - will do some busy work now, then maybe do a second jog when it's cooler. Aside from the omelet this morning (which after the jog only netted out to under two hundred calories, I've just been eating cheese and crackers, some chocolate licorice, one Skinny Cow ice cream cone - and still under eight hundred calories.
-
I also nodded off for a while.
-
In two and a half days, no spam registrations. By George, I think we've got it.

That's it, DR KevinH! Thank you. I hadn't followed closely enough to realize that Jane Lynch was a replacement after the opening.

Waiting to see Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly. Car thermometer read 113 when I got in. Thank goodness the AC in this theater works.

the tour of "Sister Act."
How did the actress do with "The Life I Never Led?" I never tire of watching Beth Malone's version from bk's "Two's Company" event some years back:

-
That should be fun, DR John G.!
-
SIX!!!!!
-
Well, I shall now return to Act II of Carousel.
-
I am back from drinks and a snack with Kim Criswell. It was much fun. We thought Stephen Cole and David Evans were joining us, and they never showed!
-
She nailed it, Singdaw.
-
The show was really REALLY loud.
-
As a test, I've gone back to medium difficult captcha. If that's okay after two days, then I'll go back to the one before that, which is pretty simple. Medium's not too bad, though.
-
Kate, my favorite Jimmy Stewart movie is The Philadelphia Story.
I'm sorry Kate I hadn't responded to your question. It is hard to chose just one. I guess it is HARVEY because I can't imagine anyone else doing this role so well.
-
DR Jane,
How great it must be to own the First Edition of Gone With the Wind"
It is nice. Keith purchased not long after we were married.

I think my tv is dying. the sound keeps cutting out for 3-6 seconds every 10 minutes or so.
I hope this isn't the case, since I certainly cannot afford a new one at the moment.

LOL, My mom asked me about 5 times today if I want two more cats. I really don't want to have 5 cats.
-
I spent the day at the lake helping mom and dad get settled in. Two of my nephews and family are going to arrive on Wednesday for 4 days. I fixed their roll down drapes, put on a new toilet seat, and best of all, convinced my mom to throw away a garbage bag full of boxed mixes that expired between 1 and 4 years ago. It was nice to help them out

We also made a trip to the grocery store and I met her new neighbor. Mom decided she didn't like her when she first met her, but I think she may be softening that opinion a bit
-
When Pigs Fly was fun. And the house was almost sold out. But it was still 100 outside when I left.
-
Back. The show is over. Long live the show. Or something.
-
Did a second jog and am listening to our new master and trying to make some decisions about it. Tricky.
-
Happy belated birthday to Mark Bakalor!
And happy belated birthday to DR Sandra!

Happy belated birthday to Mark Bakalor!
And happy belated birthday to DR Sandra!
What's this? I missed DR Sandra's birthday AGAIN?
-
Another busy day -- so exhausted
-
I'm kind of exhausted, but I will never make a claim to being exhausted like Vixmom!
-
Is it dear reader Sandra's birthday?
-
I think I'm over my panic attack about the new master, which really does sound good.
-
I'm watching the PBS show about the Annie revival on Broadway.
For those who have watched - who is the Mrs. Hannigan who is shown briefly when they show the performance clip near the end of the documentary? It didn't look like Jane Lynch to me.
That was Kate Finneran.
-
It's Kate Finneran's birthday?
-
Whose damn birthday is it?
-
And where in tarnation IS everyone?
-
Get me off this damn page.
-
Just in the nick redman of time.
-
Perhaps I'll talk about first editions in tomorrow's notes - with photographs.
I keep searching for an original first edition of The Bible.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
But I won't.
-
Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Damn them, damn them all to hell.
BK, did you get yourself permanently banned from that site?
-
I am off to Kate Finneran's birthday party.
G'night!
-
Permanently banned - my suggestion, which they now take credit for the lunkheads.
-
Right now there are six spambots attempting to register - bye bye spambots and may you and your creators rot in hell forever.
-
In two and a half days, no spam registrations. By George, I think we've got it.
I had nothing to do with it...nothing!
;)

Waiting to see Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly. Car thermometer read 113 when I got in. Thank goodness the AC in this theater works.
Tonight, I saw "The Abolitionist's Wife." And FORTUNATELY, this theater space was air conditioned, too. It's been VERY hot today and I don't think anyone would've stayed for the show if it was as warm as it could've been.

Nice! Can't wait to find out about it.

Whose damn birthday is it?
