Good morning, all! I'm back to "Roberta" dreams; last night it was "Lovely To Look At" mashed up with "Kiss Me Kate." Oy!

I have a run to Toyland this morning to meet one of my New York cast, Tally Sessions, hand him a vocal score, talk about the character, and then head back uptown before the heat gets back to the 90s. ('m hoping to be home by noon at the latest.

That's a good question. If she really wanted to disguise who she was she may have had someone else sign the books. A masculine writing

The topic of the day is a difficult one.  There are many books I've loved, many I've loathed, but I cannot think of any that I would call "life-changers" except for "Charmed Circle," a book I read about 35 years ago. The Stein family's horrible treatment of Alice Toklas after Gertrude's death was my first encounter with the necessity of recognized gay partnerships, a small step perhaps in my political consciousness, which seems to have developed primarily from the 60s folksong movement, but a huge step in my humanitarian thinking.

It's supposed to get to 96 degrees today. If Tally arrives at 10:30, I should be out of Toyland by 11:15 at the latest.

DR Jane re: the facebook privacy thing did you go into your privacy settings?  And then check what others can see?  When I do that it shows others can see only the things I've shared as public.  The posts on your page seem to be "friends only". So that should be okay.  What specific things do you think others can see?  You can email me and i'll try to figure it out with you (although I won't be home till later tonight).

BTW, when I watched WHEN A STRANGER CALLS last year for my first time in many years, one thing I thrilled to was the downtown L.A. settings.  Very similar, and I believe it even features the same bar used in THE DRIVER.

I have an AS first edition,  first printing.....it is a former library copy and has been price clipped....so it has a lot of problems....but it probably has SOME worth beyond the $35 dollars I paid for it.  It was priced at $50, but I had a 30% off coupon that day at Half Price Books....so I got a bargain.

The life-changer book for me, as I've said many times, was To Kill a Mockingbird.  Obviously I'd read books before that and enjoyed them and even loved some, but that book changed everything for me - and in short order so did Lord of the Flies and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

I left the office with Tally around 11:15 and got home around 12:15; traffic on Sixth Avenue was terrible today and the bus took forever.  I've got my lottery tickets, answered emails, bought some mp3 files from iTunes, purchased a used CD from eBay, and pondered lunch.  I'm still pondering that.

Tuesday afternoon greetings!  I slept 'til 9am and Richard left shortly after that to have his car checked before this weekend's drive to Wisconsin.  After breakfast, I threw on some clothes and made lasagna for tonight's dinner.  Put it in the fridge to set and Richard called from the car place to say that they were replacing his brakes and he was getting hungry.  Picked him up and we went to Frisch's (Big Boy) for lunch.  Then I took him back to the car place and I went to Kroger for salad and bread for dinner.  He was home by the time I got here and we're in from the heat for the rest of the day.

Back from a quesadilla and picking up one package.  That package contained the Yearbook CD, so I've finally heard Three Friends in its entirety - I'd pretty much remembered all of it save for the music to the third girl's verse, but as soon as that began I remembered it.  One wishes the vocals were better and actually singing the written notes (mostly they do, but not always), but it's sweet.  The band is almost together but there are things in the arrangement that I would not have allowed had I heard what they were doing.  There should be a nice build into the final chorus of the song (there's a key change and it's all set up for it), but instead it actually accelerates a little, which wasn't the intention.  And the final little rideout figure is just odd to me, but I can't really judge until the actual score arrives and I see how it's notated.  But it was fun to hear and I'll include it in tomorrow's notes.

Nerd is okay - the boy who sings it has been "directed" to be too serious - you can't go there and have the song work as it's designed to.  He sings okay but you just kind of have to let the song do its job and not put too much stuff on it - there's too much stuff.  And they've put a kind of odd monologue into it, between the bridge and the final verse.  Again, fun to hear, but I kind of wish all the composers had at least been consulted on the arrangements.

And the book insanity continues.  Every time a copy shows up on the ABE it's higher priced and sells within two minutes.  The only copy currently up now is 1,500 and that copy is being sold by a dealer who just sold another copy for 700.  With each sale he'll probably double it again.  The signed copy on eBay with one day left is over 3,000.  Another Buy It Now copy just went up for 4,000 by this scumbag LA book dealer who is usually triple the price of anyone else.  I can just see him on last Saturday calling everyone and buying up as many copies as he could as cheap as he could.

I must tell you, I have secured a copy for myself at a low price - that happened on Saturday when it was still reasonable.  Not signed, of course.  But it was the second copy I tried for - the first, which I got on the ABE the minute it appeared, didn't happen because I believe the dealer canceled the sale because he knew he could get more money.  He wrote me to tell me he'd had three copies and had to fill those before mine.  I told him I was ON the website when his listing went live and no one could have ordered it faster than me - I told him I was reporting him, which I did.

Hello Everyone:

Well today I finally watched Behind The Calendbra.

At first I was amused at Michael Douglas portrayal of Lee.  But then as the movie went on I found that he was actually quite good in the role.  I thought Matt Damon was good also.

I thought one of the best scenes was when Scott"s is despondent regarding a love one.  Liberace reaches over and trys to comfort Scott.

Scott replys, "It's been so long since we've been nice
to each other I forgot what that feels like".

I think we can all relate to that sometime in our relationships.

I watched  Behind The Candleabra and Seabiscuit.

I had watched Seabiscuit a few times before.  I really enjoyed it.

Usually I like movies that are based on a true story if it is done right.

I highly recommend It!

DR BK,

I noticed in your book you had a scene with Don Knotts in The Apple Dumpling Gang.

I loved Don Knotts, especially in The Andy Griffith Show.

To this day i don't think any comedian compares to him.  He was a great physical comic.

How was he to work with? I know in the book you mentioned he joked a lot during lunch.

Richard and I just had a delicious dinner of lasagna (my homemade), salad, and a whole grain baguette.  We'd taken lasagna frozen to my niece's earlier this month and had a nice meal with her and her parents.  We left the leftovers with them, which I hope they enjoyed another night.  We were hungry for more, so I made another batch today.  Tomorrow I'll take a portion to my mom and we'll have one more meal before I freeze what's left.

TOD - not great literature, but I'd have to say The Highest Dream by Phyllis Whitney, a 1956 young adult novel about a young woman who goes to New York to work as a United Nations tour guide.  When I read it when I was 12 or so, it was the first dawning of my desire to have a career.

Exodus in 6th grade introduced me to the world of adult books.  Prior to that I basically read very young books, even missing out on classics like "The Secret Garden".

It was "Les Miserables" that truly opened my eyes to the injustices of life and was the beginning of my passion for classics.

That is just it, I only have "friends" yet if you are Joe Public you can go to my page and see everything.  My photos should be private.  I understand if at one time a photo was my profile pic it would be visible, but everything else shouldn't be.

Jennifer I can see your groups, kind of your timeline, and where you were born & who you follow.  I can't see your photos.  How did you manage that.  Researching photos I've read each one has to be edited individually  ??? Still, I can't get any to open for that kind of edit and I don't ever recall putting a photo on FB where I was asked who I wanted to see it.  I do remember, a long time ago setting everything for friends only.

I'm also thinking of hiding my list of friends from the public.  Others do so I'm sure there is a way to do so.  Funny, cuz I enjoy looking at the pages of non-friends and checking them out.  Keith uses it for genealogy.

I did some resetting, even if it already said "friends" to begin with.  There were a few that said public, some of those I changed.

I hope I also changed the settings to stop every post on my groups from showing on my wall.  I would rather just click on the group link and see what is going on.

Vibes for DR Danise. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is terrible how one thing after another seems to happen.

DR Jane do you know what the situation is now?  What would she need the lawyer for?

The tree belonged to the neighbor.  They paid to remove it from her property but they may be all they want to do.  I don't know.  It seems they should be responsible for the damage or her insurance and theirs fight it out.  Poor Danise.

I would have thought that the insurance would cover it. Why would the neighbor have to pay?

So Sad to read that it was heroin and alcohol that killed Cory Monteith.  I  enjoyed his character on GLEE.  I thought that Cory was one of best actors on the show (with Matthew Morrison) and he seemed to posess a presence that would have taken him a long way in the business.  I worried when I read in May that he had checked himself back into treatment.  I know how tough that tightrope can be.  A very sad ending to a promising story.

This is my favorite photo of Mr. Monteith.

R.I.P. Cory.

We received little book from Oceania for a trip to the Southern Seas by Private Jet.  It is a partial cruise & private jet trip beginning in Kona, Hawaii and traveling to Moorea, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Malaysia & Vanuatu.  The trip lasts 22 days and only costs $69,950 per person with double occupancy.

It looked nice at first.  I'm now trashing the flyer :)

I would have to say THE RETURN OF TARZAN.  It is the book that started an addictive reading habit and a book-collecting habit that now stands at about 5-6,000 books.

Chuck, what percentage of the moving van was boxes of books?

I'm guessing that it wasn't her tree it was the neighbor's.  It doesn't hurt to have a lawyer assist her to make sure she gets what she should be getting from the insurance co.  Maybe she doesn't NEED one, but with everything that has happened I'm glad she has one

Good evening.

Boy, was it hot out there today.  But the humidity was notably low, so it felt like a "heat wave" kind of day in L.A. more than anything.  This also makes it easier for both the car and house a/c to do their work keeping the air cool.  The difference is amazing.

If she really wanted to disguise who she was she may have had someone else sign the books. A masculine writing

But then couldn't anyone sign a book (themselves) and call it a "signed first edition?"

I have a leather-bound signed edition of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.  Unfortunately, Walter Lord suffered from Parkinson's for the last years of his life.  Fortunately, I have a Certificate of Authenticity, because no one would know it was his signature.

And speaking of time, it's time for me to go home.  I took my car to the dealer to have the "Service Engine Soon" light checked out.  Hopefully, all they'll have to do is turn it off.  But just for them to hook it up to their computer to find out why it's on (without doing any actual work) will cost me about $110. :P

DR Danise just put this up on FB.  I hope soon she will be able to return to us and not just do the occassional comment over there.

Just wanted to let you all know that I am in the house. Not sure if I should be or even if it's allowed but I am here with the dogs.

I can't talk to much because I have hired a lawyer and am going to let him handle things.

All I can say is that this has been a very hard time and I will be so glad when my life goes back to normal. Just glad that the dogs and I are ok.

I understand the new King James edition of the Bible has removed the Book of Job, and replaced it with the Book of Danise.

I think I would feel more comfortable having Danise's lawyer working out a settlement with the neighbor's insurance company, rather than having her deal directly with them.

Gluten-free scones in the oven.  Gluten-free scone mix with added cinnamon and toffee chips. When they cool I will drizzle them with a maple syrup glaze.  They smell amazing
