I love Patti LaBile.  She still has a great voice and always had the best hair...especially in the 1980s!

Good morning, all! I had another night of weird dreams, and the ROBERTA ones have arrived. I only recall bits of the last dream: I was working at Barnes & Noble and there was an engagement (birthday?) party, but at the same time of the party, i was scheduled for a doctor's appointment, and I was wandering around whatever city it was with a lady in a lng Victorian dress attempting to find someone in a room up a long flight of stairs. It's good to be awake.

Have I mentioned how much I detest these faux-enthusiastic commercials for Queen Latifah's talk show in the fall?  I have no idea where that southern accent she's using came from; she's from New Jersey! I'll be passing this program by, but if Time Warner pulls CBS, I won't need to worry about it.

So, today I am spending the afternoon with my musical theatre friend Dominic McHugh and his partner Lawrence before they head off to DC and the Library of Congress.  I will meet them at Toyland around 11:00am.

TOD:
  DVD:  The Grand Season 2

My reaction to Francis Ford Coppola movies mirrors yours, BK, though I may like aspects of One from the Heart a little more than you. Youth Without Youth was hard to sit through, but it had a couple of good performances in it.

With regard to THE GODFATHER, Part III:

It's certainly not in the same leagues with its two predecessors, but it is also not the total disaster that BK and others claim it to be.

The major problem, as I see it, was the casting of daughter Sofia.  But the story of Michael Corleone needed to be completed and, for the most part, it was told quite well.

Overall, I've kind of ignored latter day Coppola.  I do like certain aspects of "Bram Stoker's Dracula".

This will show how much I've paid attention over the years, but I always conflate "One From the Heart" with Lynch's "Wild at Heart".  I'm pretty sure I never saw the former, and am likewise pretty sure I did get through the latter once on DVD.

Might give "Twixt" a try sometime, and will heed warning about the featurette.

I think that's why it's so disappointing to me. There's so much in it that reaches for the stars, but Sofia -- and some clumsy writing -- keeps it earthbound. And somehow I only see its greatness through the filter of its shortcomings.

LUNA DE MIEL (aka HONEYMOON) – I’ve given up waiting for an English language or English sub-titled version of Michael Powell’s neglected 1959 film but this Spanish language DVD of the 2002 restoration, on the Filmax label, is very acceptable because the inconsequential plot is irrelevant for what is essentially a Spanish travelogue with a great deal of music and flamenco dancing. The Technirama photography is wonderful – this is a film deserving of a Blu-ray release but I can’t see that ever happening and unfortunately the DVD is non-anamorphic widescreen. Mikis Theodorakis’ title song (as arranged by Wally Stott and performed by Marino Marini) is very tuneful and was extremely popular at the time. Curiously the main titles are from the English language print despite the Spanish-only audio.

BK mentions the "Pals" clip which didn't garner any comments at all for some reason.  I was reading the notes at the car dealership around people in front of whom I wouldn't care to try to properly listen to clips of anything at all.  And did I remember later that I had left something to go back to?  Well, of course not.  No excuses.  So this morning I listened, I like it, and I'll welcome more when the time comes.  I've sort of said it before and I'll sort of say it again on this sort of day:  there's sort of something special about the way BK captures the coming of age years, in both books and music.  And largely because of that, I've been able to take some very probing - and critical - looks back at my own such years.

Today I am having sort of a day off.

Last night, our regular pianist was sick, so we had a walk in play for our rehearsal....  She had NEVER seen the music before.....and a lot of people sang as if it were their first time hearing it as well.  It was a lot of torture....but we did get through it.

I dropped a lot of lines, so I am still working....NO BOOKS next week.  But today is my sort of day off....so I am relaxing and posting here at HHW.

I will be interested to hear about the BluRay of HARLOW.  Of course I purchased the DVD, but I can't imagine it looking SO MUCH better on Bllu Ray that I would spend more $$$$ - at least not without some extras!!!  But I guess Carroll Baker said all she intends to say about it in her autobiography....she would not consent to an interview with Tom Lisanti for his book DUELING HARLOWS which is a kind of cut and paste book about the two versions of HARLOW released in 1965.  There are some new interviews including some great comments by Carol Lynley.

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates that you are concerned about health issues and that you don't have time to address them properly at the moment - however you are sure that a home remedy or holistic treatment will work for you - if you can remember what someone told you about it when you were growing up....a remedy that they used.....

OMG.  I have, a couple of times, been that pianist.  And there's no worse feeling than that of knowing your unfamiliarity with the material just has to be letting some people down.  My worst ever (for me) experience was substituting for someone who at the last minute couldn't play their own auditions for Schmidt & Jones' PHILEMON.  There were one or two numbers in particular in which I had to do real battle with the manuscript P/C score, and I regret to say the score won.  Nightmarish.

DVD - SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

mp3 (iPhone) - audiobook, UNFINISHED DESIRES, by Gail Godwin.  I am "power reading" this one.  That means I listen when I exercise, knit, and do household chores and read the print version otherwise.  This is something I do when I've gotten bogged down and just want to finish the blasted book.

Power Reading Mode, in spite of the negative connotations, can be a good thing.

It's something that's especially useful to employ on one's first time through Proust.  You have to get through that whole bast book, using whatever method it takes, before you can begin truly appreciating it.  Subsequent readings are then effortless and richly rewarding.

Speaking of which, oh dear, I seem to still have a couple of volumes to get through...

Found a copy of the book: "Oklahoma: The Making of an American Musical" for $10 yesterday. It seemed expensive for a regular hardback at Half-Price Books, but I find on Amazon today that the suggested retail is $65!

And why is it necessary? Max Wilk's book, "OK: The Story of Oklahoma!" was written with plenty of the original players on hand to provide information.

Has anybody read it?

Yep. I enjoyed it. It's a scholastic press and those books always cost more; I think it's partly to do with the size of the run and the fact that they can get away with it.

So, bk, do you make copious notes during each "take" during the final vocal sessions, so that when you go in to comp the vocals, you pretty much have the road map of what you know you want to do? Or is it more free-form?

I do make notes on each take and I have them with me at the comp sessions - if there's a clear winner I start with that one, but I have a comp sheet which has a number for each line of each section and as I listen to each take I put in the number of the best take for that line - sometimes splitting it between two, sometimes splitting it between three, or even grabbing one word from elsewhere if need be.  When that's done, I listen and may make further adjustments if something doesn't sound of a piece.

Looks like you're the person to ask for clarification on this, DR George.

I never owned any of those originally.  Probably never even heard the whole thing.  Just a couple of years ago I stumbled upon a copy of The Primary Phase (on the audio cassettes!) which I totally loved hearing after all these years.  So what does the complete series consist of?  I hate to say it but now I don't even remember how much of the books Primary covered, so I'm taking it out to pop it in for a new listen.

I love these, like I love the original BBC TV version.  They captured the spirit of the original work so beautifully in their special way.

The complete series of radio programs that I have are essentially the five books, radio-ized.  They're billed as "Primary Phase" and "Secondary Phase" (which were recorded in the late 1970s/early 80s when Douglas Adams was alive) and "Tertiary Phase," "Quandary Phase" and "Quintessential Phase," which weren't recorded until 2004 and 2005.  I also have a bonus disc.

There is a sixth book, "And Another Thing...", written by Eoin Colfer, but I don't know if that's been recorded as a radio program.

The book is not as anecdotal or dishy as Max Wilk's book, and this is far beyond Wilk in scholarly examination of Theatre Guild papers, libretto development - it's amazing how old-fashioned for 1942 Hammerstein's original scenario was! - and music and lyrics. It's not an easy read because the scholastic goal, like my friend Dominic's book LOVERLY,  is to seriously trace the show's gestation and its huge success.

I had an awful bus ride home, The buses were running slow, and I waited around 20 minutes for one. The bus was filling up, but I got a seat in the back, across from a black lady and her boy friend/spouse, who was taking up one seat with her luggage,  I dragged out my book and read.  A couple of stops later, a couple of Spanish ladies got on the bus and asked her if one of them could sit there, so she moved over next to her friend so they could both sit. She was then sitting in the very back row of the bus with her luggage on her lap. The bus kept filling up, and when the person next to her got off, she put her luggage in the empty seat.

A middle-aged white woman asked if she could sit there and she refused to move her luggage, The two Spanish ladies broke in and told her she should move her luggage, and her friend finally said "I'll hold it" and the luggage passed over to him. The lady didn't fight with the Spanish ladies, but she started in on me - by not talking to me but talking about me loudly - and  started making comments on my "eye rolling." Well, I don't think I rolled my eyes, but I know I looked surprised when she refused to let the lady sit next to her. I said "I didn't roll my eyes," and I continued, "But if you want to know" and she told me to shut up. What I was going to say "If you want to know what I was thinking, I'm wondering if you paid for a seat for that bag."

From that point on, my life was hell. I got an earful of speculation - she wasn't talking to me or her friend but to  the air - about my character, my sexuality, my clothing, Trayvon Martin, her waiting for her 40 acres and a mule, her having to put up with my shit and on and on. This is the second time in 33 years of living in New York that I've been put through hostility over my race, and it scared the hell out out of me. As soon as I could transfer, I got off the bus and I'm still pissed off.

Thank you. My eyes are not good enough for reading, so I brought in my book on CD tonight. So, it's a bit of Willa Cather tonight. Same time period or slightly before Hemingway, but a world of difference. Cather was all about looking back on a world that was disappearing, not on the present.

DR elmore3003 - what an awful afternoon. I'm so sorry - no one should have to endure that.

DR's George & TCB I hope you will share the photo I just put on FB that goes with the following story:
"Army First Lieutenant Brandon Harker arrived home from a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan to find his two-year-old yellow labrador retriever was either given away or sold while he was gone."

Actually Jane, the Facebook link leads to the story to a news website, here in Washington:

and here's Brandon with his dog:

I missed the pic of him with his dog-thanks.  I hope so.  I think all vets should check new pets to their practice for a microchip.  At least there is one and hopefully someone will see the dog on FB and contact him.

Overall, I've kind of ignored latter day Coppola.

I do like certain aspects of "Bram Stoker's Dracula".

Latter day Coppola?  Is that the Mormons?

I love "the shadows" in BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA

I'm so annoyed with myself right now it's not even funny.  An AT&T sales rep came to the door - they're done installing their fibre optic stuff in the nabe and are pitching UVerse to everyone.  As you know I've been very unhappy with Time Warner and have threatened several times to go this other route, so I listened and since they come and install for free and give you a test period to see how much better their service is, I said okay.  And then came the stupid part.  He said they just needed my social or driver's license number to do a soft credit check - I'm normally not so stupid but he was very good - I'd already given him my phone numbers, he had the address, and I'd given him my name for the appointment set-up.  He did give me his cell, which I haven't tried yet but will tomorrow.  And then, stupidly, I gave him my license number and date of birth - I'm usually not this damn STUPID.  So, I went online and began reading about AT&T which I searched with "scam" and "getting credit information."  And while I did find similar concerns on a few boards no one actually said they'd had anything compromised, although I'm not sure they actually had given their info.  Of course AT&T was gone when I called.  So, figuring he was still working the street, I went outside and found him two doors north of me talking to the homeowner there.  I made him give me the order sheet that he'd written my number on (no carbon that I could see), which he did.  I told him I'd check it all out and call him to come back if it was all okay.  Of course, he could have already transmitted my information elsewhere via his cell phone.  I'm now petrified that something no good will come of this.  Obviously they don't know where I bank and don't know my credit cards, but they could create accounts in my name and/or checking accounts in my name.  They don't have my social security number so I'm not sure how any of that would work, and they certainly can't get the social by having my license number.  And my billing address for just about everything isn't the home address, so they don't have that either.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Yikes!

He could be an agent of some kind as opposed to a regular direct employee of AT&T.  We get that very kind of thing around here.  I've had these knocks on the door for Comcast Cable and for AT&T.  When I put them off, saying I'll call the company if/when I want something, they protest that the company won't necessarily be able to offer the deals that they can give me right now.  Well, too bad.  For peace of mind and a certain satisfaction, if nothing else, I think it's great that you went after him and got the paper back.

I learned about Art Ginsburg precisely from that Blu-ray!

I'd never known Art's Deli, myself, so having learned of him and it via JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (a movie I'd been wanting to watch again, btw, and now I shall), I was susceptible to noticing it when driving through there, and to wanting to go in, when I was out there last, and that's why I made it a point to do so one of those mornings.

I can only hope that he hadn't transmitted any of my info yet, that I got the only copy of it back - he was two doors away and had obviously been there for at least ten minutes - I know he could have transmitted via his phone but who knows?  I still can't actually find anything online about someone's information being compromised, so maybe it's okay.  And I found several posts that they do this soft credit check and its normal.  I would really be worried had I given them the social, but I never do that ever.  And I'm fairly certain that without a social not much can be done to compromise anything to do with me.  Yes I gave date of birth and the license, but you can't get a cc with only that information - unless they create a fake social, but then I can't be held responsible if the social isn't mine.  Never again.  I will simply tell them to go away and not to come back or to leave information.  I'd read that a couple of people had this happen and that their door to door guy didn't even have the AT&T info, but mine did - the full color brochure.  Of course, they can get that at the AT&T store.  But I also have the guy's cell - before I went out there and got my paper back, he was going to be calling me from the cell to set up the appointment, so I could always give that to the cops if necessary.  And I will call AT&T first thing in the morning to see what they have to say.  If they say it's a sub-contracting company that does this stuff, but that they do require a soft credit check and that's normal, then I won't worry but will keep my eye on everything.  Again, no way for him to know anything about Kritzerland or that address or account, as that's not even my social but a tax ID number.  My normal bank account never has more than one hundred bucks in it, so that won't do them any good.  The address on that account IS my home address and that IS under my social, which this guy never got.  All other bills and stuff don't have the home address on them.

Instead of watching THE DRIVER this evening (but boy does it look great), I ketchuped on A PLACE IN THE SUN.

Wow.  I'm one who had never seen it, and what a powerhouse of a film.  I made sure to take note of the score, that I might especially appreciate the CD to come -- tomorrow if I'm lucky, certainly by Monday since others have theirs now.

This is the DVD.  I'm going to watch the accompanying documentaries on George Stevens in just a bit, and I'll watch the film again soon whilst listening to Jr.'s commentary.

One reason in particular that I enjoyed Art's is that the look and feel of it immediately took me back to those wonderful delis, my first ever, in the Cleveland suburbs in the late 1960s, early 1970s -- which I still find many other people fondly remembering as well.  (The Cleveland suburbs had some great Jews, man.)

 :)

And if I'm remembering correctly, were not those very delis the subject of my very first post on HHW??  I believe they were.

:o Yikes!!  Good for you for going after the guy and at least getting the paper back.  Hopefully, nothing will come of it.  When I rented a storage unit, the form asked for my SS#, but I didn't put it down.  I asked if they really needed it and he said that they didn't.
