Well, you've read the notes, the notes were august in August, and now it is time for you to post until the august August cows come home.

Good morning, all!  I'm on my second cup of coffee and still not ready to move. I have to be out the door around 8:00am for an appointment with my barber Joe at Radio City.

Then, I'm off to Toyland. I'll work a bit on DEAREST ENEMY, take the copyright libretto for ROBERTA, and head to Lincoln Center and the performing arts library.

My HP93 color ink cartridge is not working, and I am not happy about that! I will stop at Staples and pick up a new one on my way downtown.

Here is a photo of the set for Jerry Lewis' The Ladies Man (1961). He reportedly paid for the set out of his own pocket; nearly $500,000 - which was quite a bit of money back then.

TOD 1: Can't confine myself to one show. So, here's the first: The Nervous Set. I'd like to go back to the original script and get it into better condition than it was in when it opened on Broadway. It would have to go off-Broadway and it should feature a cast of unknowns. Among the unknowns of the original cast were Tom Aldredge, Larry Hagman, Del Close and Barry Primus with jazz great Kenny Burrell on guitar.

The score has several wonderful numbers including "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "Ballad of the Sad Young Men."

Oh well.  Second cup of coffee, please.

My mom and dad's first NEW car was a Rambler, but I'm going to have to ask him and hopefully dig out a picture to pin down which model it was.  What was the difference between a Nash Rambler and AMC Rambler?  Or Rambler "American"?  I believe their first one was the latter and would have been ca-1959.  They went through at least four Ramblers over the next decade or so that I can recall.  I think their third was the one they gave me to take to school, so that became my own first car.

Thanks for the congrats for my niece. At 7 3/4 she has so many of the same hobbies as me: scrapbooking, reading, biking and swimming. She's a pretty impressive reader for age.  There are Nancy Drew books for ages 8-10 called Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew. She loves those. And she is obsessed with this series called Katie Kazoo. She has been taking out 5 books a week during the summer at the library.

Because her school program was in French for K-G2 they have not even taught the kids how to read in English yet. I am worried for the kids who are 8 and can't really read. This year they have 50% English and 50% French.  Should be interesting to see how the reading classes go.

I have not biked in 2 weeks. :(

The first week my body just couldn't handle the two workouts a day of going to the pool and biking.

And then last week for some reason I was completely fatigued and had no energy.

It is unfortunately supposed to be very rainy for the next week. But hopefully i can find some time to bike.

Greetings from Toyland! I got to the barber and Staples in good time, I've answered the important emails, and I have the materials I need to Fed Ex to New World Records.

The weird dreams continue; I dreamed about my friend Amanda Plummer, whom I've not seen in years now. I don't know if she's in Manhattan or LA, but I hope she's well.

TOD 2: My second choice would be a revival of Cole Porter and Moss Hart's Jubilee about a royal family deserting their royal duties. I don't know whom to cast because I don't know of anybody nearly as funny or imperious as Mary Boland to play the queen. Her every move and line in "The Women" makes me howl. Bill Irwin might made a good King.

Just have someone wonderful as Rebecca Luker to sing songs as delicious "Begin the Beguine" and "Why Shouldn't I?" It would be hard because, as we've discussed in the past, too many of today's singers don't trust the music. Can you imagine how horrible an "American Idol" type would be if handed "Just One of Those Things"? Or if he had to sing with someone else on a ditty like "A Picture of Me Without You"?

The smoke is much, much worst this morning.  Keith says he has to mow the lawn today :(  I have errands to do or I wouldn't go out at all.  I bet I see more people wearing masks today than I did yesterday.

"Big fires bring more than 3,500 firefighters to Southern Oregon - 11:06 am. With the five largest fires burning in Douglas and Josephine counties having grown to more than 35,000 acres, southwest Oregon now has the dubious distinction of being the nation's wildfire hot spot."

I don't envy you, DR Jane. I can remember when I was a kid living down there and how smokey it could get...and back then it wasn't just from the fires, but also combined with all of the lumber mills in the area. 100 % pollution! There were days where you could not see the house across the street due to the smoke.

Grants Pass, the town closest to the fires is 45 minutes away.  Of course we worry about lightning strikes during this time of year.

The fires combined are now up to 39,000 acres. :(

I've heard about that, in fact was warned about it before we moved here.  We had trouble explaining to people that the air quality had improved since then.  So far it isn't that bad here, ugly but not what you described-yuck.

At some point, before the Broadway opening on Nov. 18, she was written out when the entire first scene was torn apart and rebuilt.

I'd love to revive (and revise as necessary) "Nick & Nora."  I don't know who would be cast, though.  Of course, I do have a special place in my heart for the song, "Boom Chicka Boom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEVAEYf2cSM)."

;)

I love this.

If the smoke is "much, much worse," why is Keith going out in said "much, much worse" smoke to mow the lawn??  Can't he wait until it's cleared, or does it seem like it'll take too long to clear? :-\

He had been putting off mowing and the grass will just keep growing & the smoke isn't going anywhere.  He did wear a face mask.

I on the other hand went for a walk in the park along the creek on the beautifully wooded trail.  Focusing on the scenery vs the smoke lifted my spirits.  I'm very sensitive to smoke and wasn't sure I should do this, but since I was nearby for a new contact check I couldn't resist.  My throat is a bit raw but my breathing is surprisingly fine.

Now if he were pushing a mower that might have bothered him more than sitting on a riding mower.

BK--I know what you mean about airfares!  They're incredibly high this summer.  I paid only around $240 in January to go to LA.  When I looked at fares for Sacramento in July they were well over $600.  I ended up using frequent flyer miles for part of my trip and luckily I had a voucher for another part.  I still had to pay a portion.

Speaking of books, with the deal to make that film not happening, I'm putting my experiences in a book - to try to make lemonade from lemons, molehills from mountains.

I decided to try Kickstarter, if it's OK to post it here (drspite my E&T-ness again the past few days) - so that the cost of publishing it won't be "vanity" -

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1269320272/parodies-in-an-a-minor-key-a-case-of-bias-after-th

Little prizes from the $10 level to the $50 level.  Wondering if I should add something for $5?

I am home from a very interesting afternoon at the NYPL. Imogene Coca played "Baby Face" in the tryout of GOWNS BY ROBERTA at the Forrest Theater, Philadelphia, Oct. 21-November 4, 1933. At some point, before the Broadway opening on Nov. 18, she was written out when the entire first scene was torn apart and rebuilt.

I saw the show in my own chair (and it wasn't on gravel, there were level concrete "steps" about five or six feet deep) and it quite good.  They had simple costumes and minimal props.  The weather was slightly overcast at first, then less overcast and sunny, then completely overcast and it really did seem like it would rain, but no rain happened.  It got cool by the second hour but not very cold.  The show lasted about 2 hours and 15 minutes with no intermission.

For the most part, everyone could be heard.  One woman behind me complained that Brutus couldn't be heard too well.  I didn't have any trouble hearing her.  Brutus was played by a woman as a woman and had a husband named Portia, not a wife.  They did other gender switchings.  Antony was also played by a woman.  I don't know if any of the other characters were switched, but they did have several other women in the cast.
