Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no day of rest, and now it is time for you to post until the non-rested cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: AMARANTHINE!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
THIS'll wake you up!

The big storm turned into a damp squib. If I hadn't been told it was a storm I wouldn't have known. In London it's nothing more than a windy morning. I'm off to the airport later to catch a flight to Frankfurt.

I think this image is so iconic the title is not necessary

Scary Film #4
I think this is a terrible poster and does a disservice to the film, but another poster gives away a plot point

With the exception of The Exorcist the other films are haunted house films and use atmosphere, editing and music to make movies scary. Compare the Robert Wise version of The Haunting to the overblown visual effects remake. Less is more and the original is far superior

Well it's Monday again. I don't get it.
-
I know. I could tell it was Monday all the way over here on the east coast.
Good morning, all.
-
Good morning, all! I could not get to sleep last night, so I moved this morning's physical therapy to tomorrow and went back to bed. I remember very little about what I dreamed except that I was working on a Bernstein memorial concert overture and it began with the "Wrong Note Rag." My copyist friend Peter Foley was also in the dream.
No plans at all today. Let's jump right to the TOD:
Books
The Shining
'Salem's Lot
Dracula
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The Haunting of Hill House
Films
The Haunting
The Blair Witch Project
The Uninvited
The Woman In Black (BBC production)
-
I like the television show SUPERNATURAL.
FILMS:
The Undead
The Haunting
The Innocents
-
I thought there was a CD release today, but I guess I was wrong.
That was a very nice Half Time Show posted by DR CILLA LIZ and I liked the George & Gracie clips from
DRupperco and DR JOHNG.
-
My engine light came on, so I have to take the car back to the shop when I can find someone to follow me there and bring me home....perhaps one of the three people I helped last week....but I am not optimistic.

STIR OF ECHOES
THE UNINVITED
THE OMEN
HORROR OF DRACULA
and
THE DOORWAY :D

We watched BEFORE MIDNIGHT last night.
It's a wonderful romantic film; charming, believable performances and dialogue.
But, I'm glad they only do a sequel to this franchise every 9 years.
::)

Monday morning greetings! Having trouble getting going today, but that's not unusual for a Monday. It's a puttering day for me. Tonight Richard and I are going to the local Miami campus to hear a friend give a lecture about Middletown during the Vietnam era. It's part of the Big Read program centered around Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried.
-
Good morning, all.
Had a cat scan this morning, which was no fun. But hopefully the results will be good. I won't know for awhile. I had to reschedule the doctor's appointment. That's not until Jan. 20.

TOD:
Movies:
Village of the Damned
The Innocents
The Frighteners
Nosferatu (both versions)
The Shining (Kubrick's version)

Salem's Lot
The Exorcist
The Shining

Good morning all:
TOD:
I not a fan of the supernatural movies or books!

I'm still reading Circle of Friends.
I just love it!
After I finish, I will then read Quentins, also by Maeve Binchy.
She is my new favorite author!
-
I have to make a trip to the bank, but it's good exercise. One curse of portioning the therapy to tomorrow is that the bank is at the bus stop at 96th Street and I had meant to take care of the banking after therapy today.
How could I gave forgotten THE INNOCENTS? I don't find the James novella at all frightening, but the movie sure is creepy. I ask forgot the unsettling LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH.

TOD - not my favorite genre, but I do like Sharyn McCrumb's Ballad Series whose "colorful characters' lives are imbued with rural mysticism and the spirit of the Appalachians" (from the dust jacket of The Rosewood Casket).

My car is at the shop. And now we wait....
I watched MR SKEFFINGTON last night.....DR KATE mentioned it was on. It is a favorite of mine, too. I will not post my favorite REVIEW of the movie until DR JANE has watched it.....
I also missed TAR last night, so I had to watch the episode on CBS.COM......I am not pleased at the ending....but there you are.....

I found out today when I took Kismet to get his annual shots that is teeth need cleaning badly. I told the vet that the groomers at Petsmart have been doing it along with ear cleaning. He told me that you should never allow groomers to do medical type stuff. I should go back and get my money back for the all the times that his teeth were "cleaned".

Cute quote from Germaine Greer in the Times:
“There’s not a lot in it that the gossip mongers will find useful,” she said. “They may indeed discover that I am a much less interesting person than they thought I was.”

And the word of the day is: AMARANTHINE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: TIME AFTER TIME
This is one song I really dislike no matter who sings it (including Frank Sinatra who sang it first). I think it has to with Sammy Cahn's lyrics. I like about 90% of his work but this song YUCH!
Of course unless you meant Cindy Lauper's song Time After Time then I think it's okay.
Or if you meant Ozzie Ozbourne's then I rather be struck deaf than listen to that song

I don't recall the last time the two main NY Times film critics disagreed as much (at least in print) on the overall quality of a major film:

DR Mike,
My hubby cleans our Sadie's ears and brushes her teeth several times a week.
Why don't you try it yourself with Kismet?

DR Ginny,
I'll try to get" Evening Class" at the library.
Thanks for the recommendation!

Good morning. The weekend came and went so quickly and here we are at Monday yet again.

What do the charge for a "cleaning"? I expect it is really just brushing the teeth, maybe a little scraping. It isn't intended to replace a proper teeth cleaning by a vet.

DR Druxy,
I almost watched "Before Midnight" the other night on Movies on Demand.
Since you enjoyed it, I will have to see it also.
Did you see the first one? I can't remember the name.
-
Do any DR"S utilize the library to borrow books and DVD"S?

On Friday night, I saw a high school production of The Drowsy Chaperone. I love this show so much. Next to Once, it's probably one of the best shows in the last 10 years or so. The show was very good. The drama teacher, whom I've been friends with for almost 20 years, played the Man in Chair, and he was great. (probably because he IS the Man in Chair)
On Saturday night, I saw Carrie- the musical. It was a great production, but still a piece of crap. The scenes between Carrie and her Mom were the best things in the show, and if I'm correct in saying that these scenes were the best of the 1988 Broadway show also. The music is still ordinary (except Carrie's moms songs - which are amazing) and the effects in this production were great for a community theatre show. I'm glad I saw it, and probably never ever need to see it again - and I'd seriously think twice if ever asked to MD the show.
-
Sunday night at church, we did a Liturgy with all Beatles music. It was well received and a lot of fun. We'll probably make that an annual thing.

My library doesn't have it. Make sure you get the 1944 version of "The Uninvited" with Ray Milland.
I thought it was kind of cool to be driving past her house & I grew up in an area filled with celebrities.
-
Do any DR"S utilize the library to borrow books and DVD"S?
I should but have only done it once or twice.

DR John that is a long time to wait for test results. If you request a copy maybe you can find out much sooner.

DR Matthew, the original 1988 production was one of the most ridiculous and embarrassing shows I have ever seen. It was so inept, it was seriously like watching a really horrible car wreck and not being able to look away from the carnage. At the same time, it was so bad that it was outrageously funny. I really thought there was nothing worthwhile about the score at all.
-
In olden times, when I thought it was really something to find scores on eBay, I thought I was pretty hot stuff to "win" a copy of CARRIE. Which of course I knew nothing about. Except that it was "legendary".
Oy!!!
Flipping through it, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. I knew then that I'd been the greatest sucker born on that fateful day in 1949...
-
Thanks for the Carrie notes, Matthew. They're doing it here next October.
-
Interesting use of Beatles music as liturgy. Wonder if the church paid the rights to use the music.

Mike, I hear a number of people with the same complaint about Time After Time, and I can understand not liking the lyrics. But I came to the song through Dinah Washington, and her voice covers all sins in my book. I guess I haven't heard many other recordings of it. Judy Kuhn's comes to mind.

You bet your ass, I got paid. Quite handsomely, as a matter of fact. But I was having "creative differences" with the producer at the time and I know it would not bode well. I think there may have been an attempt to take it up again, but that failed too. As John Huston always said, "Why remake our good films, why not remake our bad ones?" This one may just be too good to remake. I updated it, gave it an American Southern Gothic setting, and went back to the book, which really put the focus on the sister rather than the brother...and the intimations of lesbianism, only hinted at in the original film could also be played a little bit more freely.

Books
I think the scariest book I have ever read is GHOST STORY (or GHOUST STORY in England) by Peter Straub. Unfortunately, the movie was good, but it didn't live up to the terror of the book. Still, having Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and John Houseman was pretty cool; with a brief bit of full frontal nudity from Craig Wasson.
THE EXCORCIST by William Peter Blatty. I made th mistake of seeing the fim before I read the book, so when I read it, all of the horror of the film carried over. My bedroom had been converted from an old porch, so the light switch was clear across the room from my bed. One night I said, "Screw it," and slept with the light on,

I enjoyed Ghost Story because of the cast, but, you're right, it wasn't very scary, so I never read the book. Now that I've forgotten most of the plot, I wonder if I find the book scary now?
-
Hello!
-
Watched Mr. Skeffington last night too. Very good but a little long, IMHO.
-
Happily, I got the new cast album of Carrie free - for the most part it's just a bore and I especially am tired of the gal who does the vocal arrangements for all the "hip" "rock" shows - everyone sings in fourths and fifths and it's completely tiresome. But who didn't know that every community theater and small theater group wouldn't be doing this show? They think they're being cutting edge - obviously if looked at realistically one would know it's a dog, but still they line up to do it. And usually the "critics" in those cities can't wait to say how brilliant it is.
-
Had a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and a cup of soup with the Darling Daughter. Just trying to relax now until rehearsal.
-
LOL DR JANE - just let me know when you have watched Mr Skeffington.....
Yes, Jane...for pity's sake...weigh in on this. I'm dying to read that review that Jack has promised. :D

I watched supernatural Bollywood film over the weekend, titled GHOST.
It got terrible reviews in India and was a tad controversial because the leading man, Shiney Ahuha, who was a fairly big Bollywood star just a year back, was indicted for raping his maid, and that basically ended his career overnight.
GHOST was the first movie (only movie, it would appear) that he has done since the incident, which I believe is still on going via the courts. The director of GHOST had nothing good to say about Shiney as his constant lateness and unprofessionalism made the film go way over budget (and it was only meant to be a B grade film). His leading lady also had some bad words for him, although she later retracted them.
Anyway, despite all of that, the film was great fun, pretty spooky in places, and a little too gory in spots. But I would watch it again, no problem.

The handyman is working on week two at our house which includes dry walling & painting. Today he used a primer that really stinks. I got out of the house for awhile and went for a swim. I need to get out of this room and go as far away in the house as I can get from it.

I also watched The Bad Seed the other day on TCM, even though I have it on DVD. It's one of my favorites. Eileen Heckart is outstanding, not to mention Patty McCormack and Nancy Kelly, though Nancy is practically hysterical from the very beginning. It was the primer and not much to be done about it. His wife has an extreme sensitivity to chemicals so he does what he can. He warned me it would be a problem ;D
I've had worse in that so far it isn't bothering my breathing much, just making me itchy and borderline headache. Our bedroom is ok.

Henry Jones was great, not that he was bad in anything he did. I had the privilege of spending an evening with him and he was just as interesting in person.
What a great experience that must have been!

I also watched The Bad Seed the other day on TCM, even though I have it on DVD. It's one of my favorites. I thought it was rather cool.

Storm damage in Holland.

I'm glad DR Doug missed the storm and hope he had a gentle flight to Frankfurt. I once had a very windy flight from London Gatwick to the Isle of Man. It was not a pleasant flight.

I received the following email from Goodreads and am wondering if anyone has read any of these books:
Before he wrote Jurassic Park....................................... Michael Crichton was an honors student at Harvard Medical School writing paperback suspense novels on the side, under the top-secret pen name “John Lange.”
Lange wrote eight books between 1966 and 1972…then vanished. The books were unavailable for decades, until now. All of John Lange’s works are back in print for the first time in 40 years – and the first time ever under Michael Crichton’s real name.

Does your library get the old classics? I wonder if it has "The Uninvited" with Ray Milland.
I don't know how many old classics they have, but I'm sure some. When I type in "Ray Milland" I get Love Story and Dial M For Murder.

The handyman is working on week two at our house which includes dry walling & painting. Today he used a primer that really stinks. I got out of the house for awhile and went for a swim. I need to get out of this room and go as far away in the house as I can get from it.
I would not like that smell. I am crazy around smells. Don't like paint. :(

I'm going to watch Dancing With The Stars now. I hope Derek's (my favorite pro) back is well enough that he can dance tonight.

I haven't read them. But that sounds pretty cool.

The man on the recording at Sterling's (for the upcoming Kritzerland show) says the dress code is "cocktail/upscale casual." I hope I wear the right thing!
No visible thongs. No pants pulled up below your butt. No gang colors. Do you think you'll make it?
-
I should be writing.

Paint today is sooooo much better than it used to be.
Either I'm getting used to it or the smell is improving. I have a mildly irritated throat and some itchiness but nothing else.

Thinking it was better I breathed normally and then realized I have been taking shallow breaths-lol

I should be writing.
You are. HHW posts. :)

We have a movie to watch and I need to get out of this part of the house again.

How could I gave forgotten THE INNOCENTS? I don't find the James novella at all frightening, but the movie sure is creepy.
Creepy and sad.
I think I was probably 11 or 12 when I saw THE INNOCENTS. I remember at the end of the film when the credits were running, I realized that my shirt was soaking wet and I was very cold. It was how I learned what a cold sweat meant.

That's a great story.

Good evening. I was out the door this morning before the sun rose. I saw a bobcat and a bald eagle. Not a bad way to start a Monday.

TOD: I do not like scary movies.

Too bad they didn't offer to pay to bury you if you died of boredom.

No, the community theaters will do it, not because it is cutting edge, but because it will pack them in the seats.

I saw a bald-chested cockatoo, who has been screaming most of the night, while I've been trying to write. DOes that count?

LOL John.

We just finished watching a wonderful movie, now waiting to read the review.

Bruce, I forgot to mention earlier how glad I am for your daughter that her ordeal is over. I hope her mouth feels comfortable and that she is pleased with the results.
-
Not quite comfortable yet - it will be a process over the next month or so.
-
Had a fun Kritzerland rehearsal and then went to the other rehearsal, which was also fun.
-
Good morning, all.
Had a cat scan this morning, which was no fun. But hopefully the results will be good. I won't know for awhile. I had to reschedule the doctor's appointment. That's not until Jan. 20.
~~~Good Test Results for John!!~~~
Do any DR"S utilize the library to borrow books and DVD"S?
I actually work for a library, so I do...and I download books onto my Kindle from the library. :D
In olden times, when I thought it was really something to find scores on eBay, I thought I was pretty hot stuff to "win" a copy of CARRIE. Which of course I knew nothing about. Except that it was "legendary".
Oy!!!
Flipping through it, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. I knew then that I'd been the greatest sucker born on that fateful day in 1949...
I did to!!! Now you can find a pdf of it online without much work. When I think about how much I paid for that and the bootleg CD, all I think about is how young and stupid I was. (probably still might be!)
A friend of mine used to trade bootlegs and things and about 12 or so years ago he got a copy of the complete vocal score to "Carrie." He just loved the idea that he could get it, that someone would (I think) just give him a copy, when he really didn't want it himself. He gave it to me. I should still have it and it should be in a box somewhere in my garage.
I saw the opera of THE INNOCENTS on PBS many years ago (under the bok title of THE TURN OF THE SCREW). It was pretty darn creepy, but nothing compared to the film with Deobrah Kerr.
When I was going to college at Western Washington University (which is not very far from the US/Canadian border), we used to go up to Vancouver to see the Vancouver Opera's final dress rehearsal. We got to see Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" for only $5 Canadian! It was one of the most riveting theatrical/operatic experiences of my life. The whole show was incredible. The set was almost nothing, but they had you from the very beginning with the singing and acting.
My library does...we have six copies, all are checked out or are on their way to fill holds. :)
