Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the new musical, 1870!, and now it is time for you to post until the 1870 cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I can't say that there's been any war that I've been interested in...other than something like the stage or movie musical 1776, which is about the Revolutionary War.

Today is going to be a day.  I have a dentist appointment at 11:00 (should be okay).  And tonight, I'm ushering for a performance by Rufus Wainwright (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/upcoming-events/2013/10/29/rufus-wainwright.html) at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts!  I'm sure that it'll be a great concert! :D

God morning, all!  I have my physical therapy this morning, so I'll leave here around 9:00, hit the bank and deposit the check from last night, then take the bus up to 96th Street. On my way home, I will stop at the post office to post some bills and  few packages.

That's my day.

Both the American Revolution and the US Civil War interest me. I've also been fascinated by the general stupidity of World War I since reading Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August while working on a production of OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR!

TOD: I would probably have to say World War I. Though I'm not interested in who won which battle and where, I do liek the artistic response to the war, such as the novels of Dos Passos, which I  need to read more of, Blitzstein's songs in "The Cradle Will Rock," Faulkner and even some Hemingway. Plus, the whole Dada reaction.

There was an israeli musical revue that dealt in part (but very directly) with the Six-day war called TO LIVE ANOTHER SUMMER, TO PASS ANOTHER WINTER  that played on Broadway for a nice while.

Also, a show with a wonderful score about that same war played in Israel, called I LIKE MIKE.  I have the CD, very fine songs.

...it takes her just short of 30 years and two and half hours of playing time to learn, from her patient husband (Claude Rains) that "a woman is beautiful only when she is loved" and to prove this point to an audience which, I fear, will be made up mainly of unloved and unlovable women.....  MR SKEFFINGTON is...an endless woman's page meditation on What To Do When Beauty Fades. The implied advice is....hang on to your husband...and count yourself blessed if like Mr Rains, in his old age, he is blinded....

As a kid, I was a big Civil War buff and had a lot of books on the subject and my grandfather gave me a subscription to CIVIL WAR TIMES for several years and I still have a box of them.

As I got older my interest in Richard III sparked an interest in THE WAR OF THE ROSES.  I probably have two shelves of books on that.

I also find the battles of Caradoc and Boudicca against the Romans in Britain very fascinating and have books both fiction and non-fiction on that.

Through the historical fiction of Bernard Cornwell, I've gotten interested in Alfred the Great's Battles with the Danes and the Hundred Years War somewhat.

I'd love to really learn something about the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and both World Wars.  Unfortunately, I've never taken the steps to gain any but the most superficial knowledge of any of these.  That doesn't mean it still won't happen, but the enormity of these subjects is daunting, to say the least.

I neglected to mention the "Cold War".  This is the one we've all "lived", and maybe I love the cultural products (the books, films, etc.) more than the actual issues, but the very presence of it has been enormous.

I agree DR JANE....one of my favorite Bette Davis movies....  And the funny parts were very funny....I guess my biggest problem with some Davis movies are that she never was a great beauty to begin with, so a movie that has men swarming all around her like she was Scarlett O'Hara is a bit much.  But then, maybe that's the point, her personality made her beautiful....

I seen men flock around women I didn't think were great beauties yet they had something about them  leaving the beautiful woman next to them ignored-lol.   It works the other way too.  I've known some great looking men that did nothing for me.

One thing about her not being a great beauty is how well she fell apart after her illness.

I found the psychiatrist annoying.  Keith agreed with his attitude and I said from our perspective it was correct, however, he had just met her and might have been a bit kinder.

I watched this again the other night and it's one of the few Bette Davis movies I can still watch anymore.  Her mannerisms and that odd staccato way of speaking has extremely dated for me over the years, but all that falseness works of the character and for this picture.  But the terrific performance (and he gave so many) is that of the inestimable Claude Rains.  He is so real next to Bette.  Walter Abel also delivers staunch, smooth support.

DR JANE I certainly agree with what you wrote.....RE: "beautiful" people....  And DR CP is also correct in that Davis' sometimes arch manner fit the part very well....  And certainly the makeup people did a nice job, toward the end she was looking very Baby Jane Hudson-ish....

I think the psychiatrist had just seen SO MANY women like Fanny - such as the patient just before her - and her insistence that she was an "urgent case" annoyed him.

I also agree about Rains performance and that of Walter Abel - who was so much fun in HOLIDAY INN as well.

I felt like the psychiatrists tone, not what he had to say which was fine, was in part to contrast how men behaved towards her with her beauty gone and part to contrast the too gentle husband & cousin.

Sitting in on a rehearsal of NOW CHANGE tonight.  Probably tomorrow night, too.  Friday is "my" rehearsal, for which I hope to holy hell the bass player and violinist I'll be playing with on "my" performance will be there.  (You never know.  Also, I think they got two violinists, so I need the right one to show up.)

I guess I'll leave in about thirty minutes.  I may try Beverly Glen to see what that's like on a weekday at four.  If it's reasonable, it's a much easier way to get to West LA than Laurel Canyon.  And if I'm going to sit in a restaurant and kill time for an hour, many more choices.

Good morning. The other day my DH came home from the grocery store with a frozen turkey. We didn't have room for it in the freezer, so it is roasting in the oven. My house smells so good.

YUM!!!   I need to get a turkey and have it cut in half lengthwise.  Then I can roast 1/2 at a time.  I love the smell of turkey

I'm drawn to novels, films & personal stories during WWII.  I've read numerous books of or about Jews in Eastern Europe during that time.  "Foyle's War" which began during the war is my all time favorite series.

I don't have any fascination with war at all, but studying WWl and WWll in school was interesting.

Movies about WWlll are rather fascinating, however. But hopefully it is not something I will ever have to live through.

At your age, Mike, I would sincerely doubt it.

Well, the Rufus Wainwright concert was very good.  What I didn't know was that his half-sister, Lucy Wainwright Roche, was his opening act!  She has a breathy voice, and at first I wasn't sure, but by the end of her set, she won me over.  And she's funny!  She didn't sing humorous songs, but when she chatted in between the songs, she really has a sense of humor!
Title: Re: 1870!
Post by: George on October 30, 2013, 12:04:14 AM
The only problem with Rufus' set is that the volume was a couple of notches too loud (for me).  And he mumble-sings.  He didn't enunciate as well as I would think a live performer should.  He's got a great voice, though, and I really enjoyed his songs.

One very touching moment was when he and his sister sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and from where I was standing in the back of the theater, I saw a guy who was sitting on the aisle get up, the woman with him also stood up, but then he motioned for her to stay there.  He got down on one knee and proposed to her right there!  It was so sweet!  I could see her nod her head "yes"!
Title: Re: 1870!

After the song was over, someone from the audience yelled that there was just an engagement.  Rufus and his sister Lucy couldn't see it from the stage.  As it was happening, the house manager walked in and I pointed them out and he took a picture.
