Good morning, all! This morning I have physical therapy, followed by a bus ride to my pharmacy for my monthly meds.  I should be home by 2:00 to navigate the climb of three flights, since I expect the elevator to be out of order still when I return.

Sadly, like DR TCB, every day is like the weekend for me.

My neighborhood in the 1950s was great for Halloween; it was a new subdivision begun after WW2 on a large portion of farmland owned by a Mr Lopane, and the neighborhood had lots of children born after the war. My mother and my Aunt Jenny, as I recall, used to spend the day before making popcorn balls and wrapping them in wax paper. I remember the sweet-smelling syrup (Karo Syrup, vinegar, and God knows what else brought to a boil), the huge pot of popcorn and the sticks of butter to grease their hands as they rolled the hot sticky mess into balls. Those were for my mother's "special" kids, namely the ones that my brother  and i played with regularly - the Hawkins boys, Skip Schultheiss, Connie and Donnie Back - and the other trick'r'treaters got Hershey kisses, candy corn, candy bars, whatever.

My brother and I always went out with the Hawkins boys, and I remember how dark it would get by 7:30 or 8. Curfew was 9 o'clock. That gave us plenty of time to vandalize the neighborhood, fill our bags, and  behave badly in general. We'd meet up with others, laugh about our costumes, and keep an eye out for dark houses to soap windows. The path was down Goldman Avenue to Goldman Park, then cross the street and do the other side, ending up at home.

The first year I lived in Manhattan, I marched in the Village Halloween Parade with my friend Kaiper - where is she now? - and we went as Siamese twins. It was a really bad idea because the parade is huge and the Village is packed, and it's impossible to navigate alone, much less bound to another. I've been back to the Village once since then on Halloween, and I've vowed never again.

Happy Halloween.

Here are some cupcakes one of the designers at work made. Bloody lovely, IMO.

My favorite Halloween costumes were when I was in the seventh and eighth grades. One year, I went as the Headless Horseman and created a papier-mache head with fangs and bloody eyeballs. The following year, I went as a native (very un-PC, I know) with a grass skirt made out of frayed onion sacks.

It took ages to make, as I recall.

I've never invested that much time in a costume again.

Best Halloween tradition is the fact that Mom makes cupcakes to hand out to the kids each year. She's been doing it so long that the parents expect their own cupcake. I guess she's been doing this for more than 50 years now.

Favorite Halloweens, though the memories are fairly general and non-specific, were those of my earliest teen years in Fort Lauderdale.  For those of you who know the area (DR Mike, perhaps?), we lived on a cul-de-sac in Plantation Isles (don't know if it's still called that) our first year down there, and we kids not only had a wonderful time trick-or-treating in that still barely developed area (with just enough houses and families for plenty of action), we were also driven across town to the wealthier areas to collect more goodies.  These were very special times.  We finally settled in the middle of town (SW 15th Terrace, near Davie Blvd.), and had a few wonderful Halloweens in that neighborhood -- which was also the site of my family's one real Halloween party, which, as best as I recall, was for the kids (and adults) in our church and probably a few other school friends as well.  So, the first half of the 1960s were my real Halloween years.

Until 1997, right here in Connecticut, when a few local friends and I got to know another group of friends in a nearby rural community, and for a few years we all had a few fabulous parties out there, which included hay-rides and old country cemetery walks.  Some people's costumes got pretty elaborate, but I always minimized it.  I made my own "Sardonicus" mask (still have it) one year, went as Dr. James Xavier (the man with the X-ray eyes) another time, that kind of thing.

I went into the city to see the Halloween parade once -- or was it twice?  I think twice.  Yes, it was twice.  Thank you for helping me on that.  This would have been around 1995, 1996.  First time was enjoyable enough, but the second time I picked a spot right in the heart of things to watch from, and the whole affair was SO huge, and the crowds SO overwhelming and noisy, that I found myself not having much fun at all.  I knew, standing there, that that would be my last time to brave it, and I've never regretted the decision.

DR Elmore, it sounds like your 1950s subdivision was just like the one I grew up in:  Whitehall (east side of Columbus), which back then was a lot of open fields and new developments starting up.  We moved into our first new house there in 1955 -- it cost my parents something like $12,000, and the street hadn't even been paved when we moved in.  We were there for five years.  Oddly, while I have MANY mostly-happy memories of childhood activity in that neighborhood during those years, Halloweens themselves don't come to mind!

TOD:

I loved Halloween as a kid. One that stay in my mind are 1968 or 69, the Dutch family who lived across the street from us took me with them to go trick or treating. We drove over to another neighborhood in their Rambler. I believe I was Casper the Friendly Ghost that year.

Next most memorable was first grade and we had a big Halloween carnival at my school, Griffin Creek Elementary. We went from room to room where there were various activities and games going on. My favorite was a fishing game. A large box was set up and someone sat hidden inside the box with a treasure trove of goodies. Each kid would use a toy fishing pole and cast their line into the box. The person inside the box would attach a toy or candy to the "hook," the kid would reel it in and have their treat. I have used that same game at a few of my neice/nephew's birthday parties and everyone loves it.

I like Halloween....and when I was more social....or doing more theatre through the WHOLE year and not just the summer - I usually attended some parties....

My favorite costumes have been (none when I was little) when former DR EVIL KURT and I went as Titanic victims....with our faces blue and white....black turtlenecks with RMS TITANIC stenciled on them, and our Crew Members Caps and name tags.

And then of course when I wore my tailcoat and vest and bow tie and white gloves...and carried a cabbage patch dolls....going as OF  COURSE   - the Valet of the Dolls.

I recall one Halloween, maybe 7th grade, I was sick at school and went to the nurse.  She was very nasty about it and immediately called my mother to pick me up.  With glee she kept telling me I would miss going trick-or-treating.  I did not tell her I knew my parents better than that and I would have to have been much worse before they kept me home from all the fun.

I peaked early.  In 1st grade, I had an elaborate costume (with my mom's help) - I went as a bag of groceries, with the various items peeking out over the top. The next year, I was dressed up as a big package (brown paper and string), addressed to Grandma. And in third grade, I was dressed as a can of Coke. My mother did a very good job creating the distinctive white lettering.

Here's a photo of my therapist and most of his staff at therapist Jennifer's wedding about 4 weeks ago. She's wearing the bow tie, and her spouse is to the right of her. On the left, I believe the man standing is therapist Morgan's husband, and Morgan is crouching in the white skirt next to him. I believe the pretty lady in green on the right is Gurjeet's wife, and he's standing behind her. The two men in the back row are Louis, one of the office staff, and Bart, another therapist. Today, everyone was in costume:  Morgan a murderous chef, Jennifer had a neat skull makeup, Bart was a pirate, Louis was a vampire, and Gurjeet had a zipper dividing his face and a lot of scars.

If she was sick with many things she could have gone to daycare and/or trick or treating. Only things where you have to stay home are fever or throwing up.

She was sick all night. Then once at 8am. And once at 2pm.  Before the 2pm one she was convinced that she could still go out.

I guess she could always just do her street with her little throw up bag beside her.  Or i might ask her if she wants me to carry her bag around and get candy for her.

It is supposed to rain all night. So not very nice. And my sis has now been up all night so she doesn't even want to go out. So maybe my niece will just want to stay with her. :(

Yes.  She had a gorgeous Cinderella costume that she was going to wear. But a few weeks ago she decided that she didn't want to wear it (i like recycling older costumes that my other niece wore). She had a fairy costume that she was going to wear to daycare. But it wouldn't fit over her winter jacket. So she was going to be a butterfly outside. I think she just has butterfly wings. So not a lot of effort went into that costume since we thought that she was going to be Cinderella.

You should have talked her into going as both the butterfly and Cinderella.  She'd have TWO costumes and be TWO characters.  She'd have liked that, I think.

From what I can tell by the little bit of the trailer I watched, the story has been captured and the movie looks good.  The reason I, and others, have said to read the book is the movie will not capture the voice of the book, the narrator.   I understand this would be difficult to capture in a movie as the narrator is a kind, compassionate, overworked Death.  The concept is unique and should be read.

Thanks.  I stole it from someone last year and saved it.

DR Jennifer I'm very sorry your little niece is ill and I hope the rest of your family stays well.

One year Bryan couldn't go and Craig carried around an extra bag for him.  I think if a parent is along they believe it is for the sick sibling at home.

Happy Halloween, All!

I'll be spending my evening watching other people in costume and makeup. Going to see two friends in the production here of THE SUNSHINE BOYS, with Danny Devito and Judd Hirsch.

My all time favorite costume growing up was Zorro. At ages 5 and 6, I insisted I HAD to be Zorro, my hero. Swordsman, horseman, hero, man in black. I'm not sure I ever took that costume off in my head.  :D

Have a wonderful spooky-licious day!

As a kid, two costumes I remember are Hopalong Cassidy and, later, Paladin (Wire San Francisco).

As an adult, I put on camouflage face paint and wore fatigues to a party.

It was made for TAO's production of The Brain From Planet X that we did a few years ago.  It's just expanding foam insulation on a bike helmet and some paint.  It looks pretty cool in person.

I was out in the rain and wind earlier, taking Mom to a check-up with her doctor.  On Monday we're going to the hospital for her to have an esophogram to try to find out why she's having trouble swallowing.

Halloween:

Hoards of kids, going door to door, disguised, so you can’t tell who they are, begging for food. Strange Holiday.

Good grief!  My Mom has been reincarnated as DR DRuxy. That was exactly the sentiment my mom expressed every year about Halloween.  She always got us, or made us, costumes and she always allowed us to go Trick or Treating, but she hated the whole idea.

Strangely enough, once I had outgrown the T or T part of the holiday, my mother suddenly fell in love with the holiday.  She would keep track of how many kids came to the door and what the best costumes were.  A complete change of attitude from the begging that my sister and I were doing when we were younger.

G-R-O-A-N  Nice!

It seems like a simple thing for someone to do until the elevator is fixed.  If I lived in your building and you didn't let me do it my feelings would be hurt so you wouldn't be beholden to me.

The new trailer for "Sally Struthers IS Dolly!"
http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/First-Trailer-For-Sally-Struthers-In-New-HELLO-DOLLY-National-Tour-20131031 (http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/First-Trailer-For-Sally-Struthers-In-New-HELLO-DOLLY-National-Tour-20131031)

That was horribly produced. The first image of her has her trying not to trip over the red dress as she comes down the stairs. And she doesn't seem to move a lot while everybody around her gives and gives and gives. It kinda reminds me of the SCTV spoof of Mame in which the chorus is flying through the air with all kinds of movements and then you see Lucille Ball (Catharine O'Hara), sitting in a chair and smoking a cigarette. On cue, she belches out the word Mame and you can feel, in that one word, the energy drain from everything around her.

Well, it's time for me to leave work.  I'm going to Costco to see if I can get a couple of pizzas for tonight and some stuff for tomorrow's fund raiser.  We on the Theater Artists Olympia board are all bringing food for the evening.  Nothing that needs to be cooked, though.  We'll see what I can find.

After that, I'm going to my sister's for the evening.  My sister and I are putting together baskets to raffle tomorrow (hence the pizza...our parents will also be there, so the pizza will be eaten by several of us).  We'll put the finishing touches on the baskets and wrap them in plastic with bows.  Hopefully, they'll actually be bid on.

Anyway, be back later!

One year Bryan couldn't go and Craig carried around an extra bag for him.  I think if a parent is along they believe it is for the sick sibling at home.

I actually had the bag and was asking. It was sort of embarrassing. I'm sure people believed me (I think). But it was still slightly awkward.

I am really sore. I ended up carrying my sister's golf umbrella. I didn't realize that it was so heavy.  And I ended up carrying all of the extra candy. Usually we would drop it at home. But the lady and other kid we went with didn't want to stop.

My niece said I could pick one piece of her candy. My sister corrected her and told her I could take whatever I wanted. :)

I really only wanted a bag of Reese's Pieces. Love those.

My little niece put on her winter jacket. And actually didn't put her butterfly costume on. She put on the fairy costume she was going to wear to her daycare party. She did 3 houses and then went home.

My brother-in-law was supposed to go Trick Or Treating. But at the last minute he decided not to go. So it was just me and my niece. We went with the mom and the girl who live behind them.

Yes, it is much cuter to have the sibling ask.  I'm sure your niece appreciated it.  I never carried the extra candy for my children.  If your niece can swim with her arms in the air she can lug around bags of candy ;)

The neighbor's husband was there too.  It was odd because he was putting on his jacket to go out. And then my sister told him to wait while she went to the few houses next door. And we went back he said he didn't feel like going.

I do like going trick or treating, minus the heavy umbrella and carrying the heavy bags. I guess he must have carried their bags in past years. Because I don't remember ever having sore arms before.

True. But it wasn't because it was too heavy. It's just she had her own bag, plus the donations box for the children's hospital. Plus she was trying to keep her tree hat on.

In 3 weeks is the next swim meet and her call time is 1:15pm. The strokes are butterfly, breaststroke and front streamline (put your hands out in front of your head and kick).  Breaststroke is my favorite stroke. But it's my niece's least favorite. She's not so fast so it will be interesting to see how she places.

I was looking at her ribbons that she got over the summer. And she swam 25 m of front crawl in 26 seconds. And last week I believe she swam one length of front crawl in 20.63. That is crazy to improve that much in just 3 months.  The fastest girl swimming (who is from our pool and who will probably turn 9 in weeks since she is on the 9-10 swim team swam something like 18.38). And the other girl from our pool swam 20.28 (she was 9th place).

One year when the Vixter was about 10 or 11 I received a call from the school nurse that she was ill - I  left work and picked her up from school and took her to the doctor - she prescribed something and as we drove to the pharmacy to pick it up I told the miserable child (in an effort to make her feel better)

"You can still go trick or treating "

she replied  "Do I have to?"

only then did I realize just how ill she really felt , poor kid

Before Halloween I picked up my niece from school. When we got home she could not find her homework. We went back to the school (only a 3-5 minute drive). She could not find it in her locker. She could not find it in her desk.  Usually she puts it in her binder. But since it was Halloween she hadn't had time.

It must have fallen out of her bag?

Anyhow she could have gone back tomorrow (it is a ped day but the teachers are there). But she said the teacher didn't keep extras (I find this hard to believe).

Luckily a girl in her class had forgotten something. So i asked her if she could ask her dad if they had a photocopier. They did. So i asked the dad if i could follow them home so he could photocopy the pages. Thankfully he agreed. Thank you nice father!

Oy!

when I was in my late teens and early twenties I belonged to a  young adult group that met every Sunday evening in a church basement - we used to have a Halloween party every year.  I bet my friend Frank that he would not recognize me.

At the time I  pretty much  was the makeup department at my  college theatre dept

I used nose putty to build up  my nose,  gave myself a swarthier complexion with pancake makeup, gave myself a  beard and moustache and bushy eye brown with black crepe hair and put on a short black wig,  then I put on my brother's  olive green work pants, my dad's old army jacket and my brother's work boots

the room we met in had two entrances , I came in the back one and saw  Frank sitting on the couch facing the front entrance.  He was busy telling everyone  about  our bet and explained it didn't matter how I dressed because  he knew he would recognize me because I was the one assigned to bring the cake!

So I sat down next to him on the couch and waited  silently.... about 5 minutes late r my brother came in the front entrance (carrying  the cake I was assigned to bring)  and Frank  told everyone - Ok she'll be next!... then he waited and waited and finally asked my Brother , "Hey where is your sister?"

"Sitting next to you !"

All in attendance agreed I  won the bet

I think I'm going to quit thinking out loud about traveling until I'm actually in the air and on my way somewhere lol.   I used to travel so much and now I seem to think of 1001 reasons not to go.

Sorry about your niece, Jennifer. No one should be sick on Halloween.

Maybe if she hasn't thrown up all day then she will be able to go out on her street. But the weather is supposed to be rainy. So not too exciting for anyone.

I hope she is up to putting on her costume and going to a couple of houses.  Will you be going over there tonight?

I would have gone for a butterfly and a moth!

I am going to see my family on Sunday.  A short 2 hour trip by car I can do.  Still don't know if it will be my car or the rental, but either way, I'm going

Next Tuesday afternoon.  Three Kitties I know have to all go to the vet.  I'm considering recording the song they will sing all the way there.   It's usually quite an example of atonality

In a continuing effort to bring a little bit a culture to ya bums  here is the the latest shocker, this time from Holland's Got Talent.

On a personal note, I would audition for the judge on the left, any time!!

For some reason, that clip wouldn't load very easily at all.  I found THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NfnSgYqM4M) clip of the whole segment that played very easily.  And Tom, the judge on the left is American!  You won't need a translator...not that that would've mattered, anyway! ;)

Thanks, George, but you couldn't get me Dan's phone number?

Well, that was a first - Matt Damon and a whole slew of kiddies just knocked on my door.  Go know.

The real Matt Damon?

Yep, the real Matt Damon.  I was completely surprised.  I was handing out candy and I heard his voice and I recognized it immediately, looked up and there he was.

Have fun DR George.  You didn't mention handy out candy as part of your evening activities.

Nope.  It turns out that my sister didn't even have any candy.  And that was okay because no one showed up, even though she had the porch lights on.  Our parents came over and their friend Mona.  We all ate pizza and played Scrabble.  My parents and Mona left after that (my mom won).  My sister and I then assembled the raffle baskets.

She also made a couple of tins filled with drink mixes (which are in Ziploc bags inside the tins).  One is of cinnamon cappuccino drink mix and the other is filled with chocolate cinnamon cappuccino drink mix.  I have to copy the instructions from the recipe book my sister got these from, print them out and notate the changes from the original recipes so that the winners know how to prepare the drinks.  Essentially, the individual ingredients are supposed to be layered in glass jars, but my sister didn't have any, but I had these tins.  So, we just mixed all the ingredients together in bags and put those in the tins.  They smelled good. :)
