Title: THE SLUGGISHLY SLUGGISH SITE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sluggishly sluggish, and now it is time for you to post until the sluggishly sluggish cows come home.

Had to jump out of bed early when I heard the fuel company's truck backing all the way up the driveway (don't ask me why they back up; they should know after nearly twenty years that there's plenty of turn-around room up here) to fill ALL THREE (count 'em) propane tanks.  Went out to say hi and the guy was very impressed with the setup.  He said there's easily a full week's worth of power outage with this capacity.  Of course we all know there's never going to be another power outage, once the installation is completed, which will be by the end of the week.  I don't think he'd gotten the memo yet.  Anyhoo... and nevertheless...

Busy day today, with basement prep, creating some pathways through all the SH stuff so the electrician can work tomorrow.  Then my dental cleaning and checkup.  And playing tonight's rehearsal -- with the violinist, FINALLY -- thought that would never happen.

So, I may appear sluggish, but I'll really just be a little E&T getting things done.

Good morning, all! I slept late because I was up too late reading Bitch In A Bonnet.  The man's humor is outrageous and his admiration for Ms Austen endless. His comments are very astute, and I'm really enjoying his blow-by-blow breakdown of the novels.
http://bitchinabonnet.blogspot.com/

I will shortly walk over to the polls and vote. It's not a bad schlep, and I can stop and rest at the park benches at theBroadway intersection.

There will be a lot of tsuris coming from Philadelphia today, and I am not amused over the situation.  I hope it's not nearly as disastrous as I fear.

Although I never read from an E Book, I don't think I would enjoy reading as much.

I am almost finished with Circle of Friends, by Maeve Binchy.

I love it so much, I am taking my time with it because I don't want it to end.

Good Morning all:

TOD:

I actually like them equally. I never thought that I would like an e-reader. But if you like reading then it is a must. I honestly cannot imagine not having one.

At first I was happy to have one mostly because there are a lot of novellas for series I read that are only available as e-books.  Then I realized how many lesser known authors there are whose novels are amazing and who charge less than $5. There is no way that i could request all of these books from my library.

I still don't use my e-reader to buy full price books (a lot of people use it this way).

I highly recommend a kindle. Amazon.com has so many deals it is crazy. Expensive books go on sale. Lots and lots of free books and reasonably priced books.  Amazing.

Looking forward to listening to Fresh Air with Terry Gross on NPR at noon:

Thanks, DR Ron Pulliam!  The bad news has taken a lot of wind out of my sails. I'm feeling too old, too crippled, too frightened over no work and too full of self-pity.

One disadvantage of being out of the circuit for 12 years with projects that ended up as blind alleys is that you're forgotten. I have very little beyond four recordings -  The Herbert Piano-Cello, the Herbert songs, EILEEN and DEAREST ENEMY - to show for those 12 years.  An aggravating part for me is that singers I once worked for, and gave great rates to - Ashley Brown, Brent, and Liz Callaway are three of them - are doing pops concerts like mad, but they're not calling  me. MARY POPPINS MD Brad Haak is pushing himself as an orchestrator, and his video of his orchestration for "You There In The Back Row" on youtube owes a great deal to of mine.

Poor me! Like I said, too full of self-pity today.  I'll go vote  now.

I have always preferred to read hardcover books though over the years read more and more paperbacks as they were often all that was available.  The cheap little ones were good for traveling and quick read type of books.

Keith purchased my first Nook for himself and then switched to the iPad.  It took awhile for me to get used to it and now I admit I prefer reading on it.  I have built in light to see and the print is usually easier to see.  Unless I don't have an internet connection, which rarely happens, I can instantly download a book to read.

I still carry a paperback & flashlight when I travel, just in case my Nook fails me.

Good morning, all (where it is still morning.. it is here  :) ),

LOVED the video, BK. How adorable is that girl?!! And loved the set-up patter too. Perfect!
I also just saw a video on Facebook of Jenna's "Suddenly it Happens" that her mom posted. I am so sorry I could not be there to see and hear it all.

The good news on Sunday's long day of rehearsal and ensuing Ovation Awards show is that WE WON! Our cast of PARADE won the Best Acting Ensemble for a Musical, and the Production won, as well as our lead and supporting actors, Jeff Skowron and Rufus Bonds, Jr. It was one of those times when you knew something magical was happening, but to have it honored like that was is just the icing on the upside down cake.  :D

Other than that, I got nuthin'  :P

DR ChasSmith - will your generator operate everything in your home, or just select priority appliances?

This is a 17,000-watt one which is a decent if not humongous size, and you have to learn ways of thinking about what you're going to run.  These can handle "whole house", but in reality you would never want to put the kind of demand on it like you could with the normal power coming into the house; i.e., literally run EVERYTHING at once.  I'll need to learn what draws what kind of power, and not pull too much more than half the generator's capacity at one time.  You need the excess to be available for the heavy start-up demands of furnace, fridge, freezer, water pump, etc.

So, this will handle the furnace, water pump, the main appliances, and a fair number of lights and small things and probably one LCD TV.  That might even be a conservative estimate.  At this point the central a/c isn't recommended because it's an old and inefficient unit, but that's fine with me.  I want winter survival and comfort, and can suffer a few days without a/c in the summer as long as everything else is working.  I'd also leave the good plasma TV and stereo amps, etc., off, and enjoy lesser pleasures during a power outage.  I have no problem "cutting back".  The electric clothes dryer might be a bit of a challenge, too, not sure about that.  But there are all kinds of ways to go easy on a generator while living a pretty normal lifestyle.  If you want to use one heavy demand item, you can cut back on something else in the meantime.

I can't answer the question any better till the electrician and I have had a good sit-down on it, and till I've done my own research on literally every electrical device in the house so that I can exercise good judgment.  That little study is actually going to be kind of interesting.

Yes the size of the print is a good point in favor of e-readers. And you won't get the book dirty. It is easier to hold.

I would say for the nay-sayers to just try using an e-reader. If you read a lot if it is the best thing around.

The discussion was about a new book about industrial musicals, Everything's Coming Up Profits, by Steve Young.  They played a clip and Sheldon commented that he'd like to know who the brilliant orchestrator was and Steve ID'd Bruce.  The whole program was quite wonderful and I'd recommend looking it up online.  I think you'll be able to hear today's program tomorrow on the Fresh Air website.

I never minded purchasing hard covers I wanted to read.  It is one thing to pay for something you can look at and hold in your hands than for something on a hand held device.  With long waits at the library, if a book a new book is available, or a high price for an eBook I rarely read recently published books.  I just received a reminder of this fact from Goodreads.  I have the page to vote for my favorite books of 2013.  I don't know what criteria Goodreads uses for their top choices (there is a write in option), however I have only read 2 of the books listed.  I have several of them on my library hold list and others on my wish list.  I plan to add a few more to the wish list.

My internet was out while the phone line was being fixed.  We often have problems here and need to wait for the repairman in case he has to come to the house.  I knew we were in trouble when the repairman, for the first time, actually showed up here.  The problem was from our end.  I guess that means we will be charged for this visit.

Does any DR have a metal roof?  How is the noise level during rainstorms?

DR JRand63, my grandmother's farmhouse in Appalachia had a tin roof, and I loved listening to the rain on the roof. It might not be so much fun in a hail storm, but I loved the sound.

My niece went into labor on her own, just before they were going to induce.  The latest update is they expect the baby around 3:00. :)

I am also a Tuesday baby and my sister's son is celebrating his birthday today.

Thanks, DR ChasSmith, for your detailed response on the generator. Exactly the kind of information I was interested in finding out about. So great that you have done all the research!

I've had some very good help, starting with an electrician who not only lives around the corner and is one of the best in town, but who has gotten to know me and my interests a bit through several lesser jobs -- so it's just a bit more than "just another job".

BK might even be amused to know that when I posted a couple of lines on the HTF referring to my plans to install a generator, as opposed to getting a portable like so many do, I got a note from Robert Harris offering several do's and don't's based on his own experience.  He's on his second one, having not had proper guidance on the first.  His is a step up from mine, a 22kw on which he runs the whole house -- EXCEPT for his home theater -- which in his case is bound to be a lot of home theater, with the main power-suckers being some huge amps for some incredible speakers.  And I'm sure he's got a great house besides.  But 22kw handles everything except the "hobby" just fine.

Of course I appreciated that more than I can say.  It's rather like a gift falling out of the sky.

Are your waits for hardcovers at the library as long as for e-books?  I read mostly recent books. I"m sure way more than half are 2013.

Not usually and to save money even the library has paperbacks, nice ones.  My book group is reading "The Little Prince" next month and I have the library paperback copy.

I read both ebooks and real books.  There are some books I want to own and some books I know my parents will want to read, so I buy the hard or soft cover of those books.  I read an ebook if it's something I want to read but don't care to own it.

I love my Nook.  BN has lots of discounts and lots of good books that are very cheap.  Many of them I never would have purchased at full price, but took a chance on since they were discounted. Most of the time I'm glad I did

DR Cilla you reminded me to check the B & N $2.99 and under page.  I only check it now to see if there is something in there I know I want.  I have too many books to read as it is and spend too much time searching for books to read.  I have found a lot of gems through my library and Goodreads is an excellent source for me.

I am almost always first for my library books (since I request them months and months in advance). So i am not used to waiting. I have occasionally had to wait for dvds. But this was the first time i'd ever been #14 with a week-long  time frame.

My library got Maggie's Man. But unfortunately i don't have time to read it right now. But my mom is going to take it since she likes Lisa Gardner.

The shoot went very well - more about that later.  Then I got a call from a cast member asking if I'd meet with him an hour prior to rehearsal so we could drill stuff and I of course said I'd be happy to.  So we did that and it was really a good session and I think we may do that a few more times.  But we made a decision today that just took a huge load of stress off this project - we're delaying our first performance one week - we all thought Thanksgiving was on its usual week and it's not this year - it's a week later.  So, we just bought a week and that's going to be so helpful.
