Today, I'm going to see two, count 'em, TWO plays. :) My friend Pug is directing "The Weir" at Tacoma Little Theatre (http://www.tacomalittletheatre.com/index.php).  It's a bucket-list play for her.  She's wanted to direct this for years.  I know the four guys in the play, but not the woman.  I can't wait to see it.  HERE (http://www.thenewstribune.com/2013/11/08/2878627/captivating-tales-from-an-irish.html) is a review.  I'm going to see the 2:00 PM matinee.

Tonight, I'll go to see American Roulette (http://www.olytheater.com/shows/currentproduction.htm), a co-production by Theater Artists Olympia (http://www.olytheater.com/) and Animal Fire Theatre (http://www.animalfiretheatre.com/).  As the treasurer of TAO, I need to pick up the till after the show, so I may as well see the show.  HERE (http://alecclayton.blogspot.com/2013/11/american-roulette.html) is a review of AR.
Title: Re: VERY
Post by: George on November 10, 2013, 01:34:27 AM
Two very different, but I'm sure very intense plays.  What's interesting is that Pug directed "The Weir" and her son Ethan is in "American Roulette."  And no, nepotism had nothing to do with his being cast in the show (Pug is the Artistic Director of TAO).  He had to audition along with everyone else.

And here's the Playbill announcement on the Kennedy center GIGI, which is from Nov 6 in case anyone interested missed it before

I also liked all of the choices of the DR's for the TOD....so many films I missed.

This is a picture of me rehearsing to be the "middle" Audrey in a production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS back in 1994.  There is no particular reason for this photo.  I thought we could have a random photo today...with the only provision being that said photo should feature the Dear Reader who posts it.

Posting from church, as I am here 7:00am Mass this morning to run a video. It's nice to see the looks on people's faces when I walk into the church before this Mass (which is the Mass without music on Sunday - except for Easter) They vary from "<smile> - which translates, "YAY were going to have music" to <scowl> - which translates to "how dare you interrupt my personal prayer time and make me sing"

Good times :)

Last night, I saw a production of God of Carnage which I enjoyed quite a bit.  I had never seen the play before.  I thought it was well done and all 4 actors were really great.  I can see it being not so great if even one of the actors wasn't strong.

Good afternoon, all! I debated staying in bed for the rest of my life, and I was having a bizarre dream about talking bankruptcy to a receptionist at the Leonard Bernstein publishing co,'s offices while a typhoon raged outside, water was leaking in the windows and Broadway was going through hell, and my friend Charlie Harmon was in meetings with Jean Druesedow, the woman whose graduate assistant I was in 1969 and 1970.

That was all pretty horrifying, but so is my life at the moment, and I'm both scared and angry. I'll try not to let too much of this onto HHW, but things do not bode good for me at present, and staying in bed is my metaphorical means of burying my head in the sand.

Yesterday, after avoiding this recording for the past ten years, I listened to it. Besides the fact that its band sounds like piano, hammond organ and bass, I was amazed at the number of wrong notes and how peppy and terrible it is! Everything is one tempo: brisk, and the cast sounds as though they learned their material fem the 1976 Goodspeed production, which was the source for the music on this recording.

Last night I watched, for the first time since I saw in in the theatre around 1996, Ang Lee's glorious film of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, which is s much better than its source novel. I love Miss Austen, but she was still finding her way in that book. It's hard to believe that, with no more fumbling around, she followed it up with PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

My phone just rang, I answered it,  and a woman's voice asked, "How are you feeling?" It sounded like DR Ginny, so I started talking, and she said, "I think I dialed the wrong number." So, I said, it was nice talking to you, and hung up.  How weird!

I think I'll start doing this every time the phone rings and someone asks how I am. Get the phone solicitors to hang up on ME.

I've had a very busy day today, but with very little to show for it in terms of a list of accomplishments.

I've had many days like that. I suspect that many of the things that needed to be done never made it to the list.

Things are fine for me right now.  Anyhoo...

Had a major day of rest, which I suppose I needed.  Back into action tomorrow.  Loafed around most of the morning and afternoon, did a little shopping for food and such (mostly food, with just a little such picked up on impulse), and I just watched -- first time ever -- I MARRIED A WITCH.  What a delight!
Title: Re: VERY

I came home and we were on page three, which wasn't right at all.  Then my posts wouldn't go through, then I called and while the tech was looking for the problem, we suddenly were well into page four, now page five and a bunch of repeated posts, although that could be because we were all trying to post the same thing multiple times.  Very weird.  Hopefully we'll be okay from here on in, but our excellent tech is monitoring and still poking around.

I had such a crazy day - was behind in the morning, then had to hurry to the theater - amazing drive there - fifteen minutes to Venice Blvd. via the freeway and then ten minutes from there to the theater - twenty-five minutes, which is what this drive should take every day, but it's never been less than fifty and is frequently closer to an hour-fifteen.

Had another good drill rehearsal, made a couple of decisions, added a song, made a duet a solo.  Then we ate at a bbq jernt on Lincoln that's gotten raves from all over, including the Food Network show, Diners, Dives and whatever.  Simply put, one of the worst meals I've ever eaten.  I love bbq and I love most of all Kansas City, where the sauce is sweet.  Here all the sauces were tart and vinegary and tasted bad.  The pulled pork had no flavor at all, the cornbread was grotesque, the cole slaw a bore, the creamed spinach inedible, and needless to say I won't be going back.

Imagine the fun I'm having with several styles of Texas barbecue and people think there's only one style.

I'm going to read a bit and go to bed. I have physical therapy tomorrow morning and the day to decide if i want to go to the Goodspeed alumni party tomorrow at Lincoln Center at 6:00. It's going to mean walking and standing, two things I'm not doing well.

Hubris. The reviews weren't that great in Chicago, as I recall. I still would like to see it, since I know several of the cast. I've known Andrew Lippa since he got to New York after University of Michigan and joined the Gay men's Chorus 20 years ago. I'm not much of a fan.

DR JANE - DR JEANNE is correct....Clark Kent's suit is made from a special fabric that folds flatter than an envelope and special glasses and shoes as well, and the entire package is placed in a pouch inside his cape....very convenient.

I only know that the fabric was special.  It would have to be ;)

Sunday evening greetings from W. 54th St!  Our flight was smooth and took less time than getting from Newark to our apartment.  We took the bus, which left us at Port Authority.  We tried to get a taxi from there, but ended up walking the 12 blocks.  I'm having trouble getting the wireless - posting with my phone instead.  Not very convenient...

I am pleased you had a smooth flight and have arrived safely.  Have a wonderful time!!!

Some of the Chicago reviews, including Variety, were more positive than not. They said it needed work, but they were all saying it was on track. How would anyone know that, like Elmore, Ben Brantley is definitely not a Lippa fan?

I like things about john & jen, and am grateful that BK recorded it. Not big on his version of Wild Party and I haven't heard Addams Family yet.

Today I saw two very, very good productions.  The first, "The Weir," was directed by my friend pug at Tacoma Little Theatre.  It was moody and sad and funny and very well acted.  The second show, put on by Theater Artists Olympia and Animal Fire Theatre, was called "American Roulette."  This was intense, and sad and also very well acted.

The drive up to and down from Tacoma to see "The Weir" was quite easy...no trouble at all.  On my way back to Olympia, I stopped at Krispy Kreme Donuts and got me a few.  I haven't been there in a few years.  I had one when I got on the freeway, and now I have three left.  They'll last me three more days and no more. :)

Jason Gould is supposed to be singing.  Connie Francis is one of the people behind the telethon.  She was on but didn't sing.
