Good morning, all!  I slept in but I wish I'd slept in longer. Now that I'm up, Bach's Magnificat is on the stereo, I'm on my first cup of coffee, and pondering today's events. This week and next are Dublin weeks in Manhattan: this week Niall O'Sullivan, one of our wonderful trumpet players, is in town, and I hope to hear from him today or tomorrow. Next week, our brilliant pianist Vinny Lynch is in, and Rob Berman and I want to get-together with him.

So, todayI've got to dig in and finish up the Moross work. I've no plans to do anything else, depending on whether I hear from Niall,

DR TCB, how did last night's show go?

And from any point in New England, he wouldn't likely be coming down that Hudson Line at all.

But what a horrible story to start the month with.  It made me think of how many disasters seem to happen in the holiday season.  Of course they don't all happen then.  It's just a perceptual thing of the moment.  But I always think of Lockerbie and Pan Am.  And of course last December was about as horrible as it gets.

The USB turntable I bought a few years ago to work on my dad's old records of his band doesn't work.  It's just plain broken.  Of course I got busy when I bought it and never really checked it out.  I decided to set it up yesterday and lo and behold .....anyway, it was cheap and I've waited years too long to take it back so now I'm looking for a new one.  Any advice?

When I was looking for a computer for my dad, I remembered that I have one at the office I don't use that is newer than the one I have upstairs at my house.  In the same room, there is an old tv that doesn't work without cable and I don't want to pay for another direct tv box, so I brought the computer home and found a great deal on a 22 inch tv.  I hooked up an antenna I had, hooked up an extra ROKU player I have and hooked up the computer.   Now it's great!  It's also a guest room with a futon so now if someone visits, I have a tv for them to use and I have a great monitor.  I want to use that computer for the record conversion I'm going to do and my photography.  So all I need is a working usb turntable and I'm good to go.

We had a fun Michigan/Ohio State party yesterday.  What I expected to be a bloodbath turned out to be a very exciting game.  There's a lot of online chatter questioning Michigan's decision to go for 2 at the end, but it's OK with me.  Given Michigan's performance this season, I'll take the 1-point loss.

Cilla, we (Anthony) have an Ion turntable and we're very happy with it. We've had it for quite a while and it works fine for us. Anthony has transferred lots of LPs to digital files and then burned the to CD, including records for Dear Larry. I don't think they have the one we have anymore but here is the Web site. I just hope the one you bought years ago was not an Ion :o

I've finished my Moross work, made a few ROBERTA editing notes, and heard from Joshie, who rather exasperatedly told me he was on a different train (Amtrak, not Metro-North) and had arrived back in Manhattan earlier. All is good. What do I know about getting to his parents home? I'm very happy he's safe.

I also heard from Niall about getting together tomorrow and had an irritating email from The Man From Philadelphia, who can be completely clueless about things.  I am not sure how to respond.

I mentioned years ago why I'm doing this.  My dad played Dixieland trombone and played in swing bands from the time he was in junior high through high school, college, the army and then through law school.   Back then you could just make your own records  I have a bunch of them and they need to have all the noise taken out.  I do have a little contraption that hooks to my stereo and then to a computer and I used that and was making some progress but the project got sidelined years ago.  I'd rather use a usb turntable than the cumbersome set up I had to do before.   I do need it to play 78s.    Anyway, I'd like to get some of it done for Christmas, so I need to get a turntable soon.

DR CILLA LIZ I a USB turntable from Audio Technica that has worked well for quite awhile.  It's very similar to to one that DR BEN linked.

Nowadays they do have a turntable that records directly to a CD from the vinyl.  Of course you would probably still want to use some kind of software to clean up the audio....but the initial recording might be simpler.  This one is kind of expensive, but I imagine you can find the technology for less in an electronics store near you.

Congrats to TCB, a second night wonder!  :)

I sort of hate opening nights.  Not at the time they're happening (unless I do something really terrible), but often in hindsight.  Whatever happens feels so much worse than it would in subsequent performances.  Shit can -- and will -- happen at any time, but we place such expectation on openings that any misstep at all is horribly magnified.

Richard "inherited" the turkey and bacon sandwich from his father.  It's usually the morning-after breakfast, but we had to wait until after our football party.  For that I supplemented the leftover turkey with some new Honeybaked ham, so now we have THAT leftover   :)

I spent most of today with friends. Went to church, then to visit some friends who were making Baptist cakes for brunch. They are a type of rectangular doughnut that you fully immerse in the oil when you fry. I think I wrote about them last year because I made them for Christmas. These were better than mine. Much, much better.

Anyway, it felt good to be off the road for a day.

Thanks!  I was looking at some of the audio technical turntables.  I need three speeds, so it's more expensive, but an option.   I'm going to try the cables and converter I have if I can find the software online.  It's kind of a hassle, but it hooks right into my stereo and I think that turntable may be better with the old records than a cheap turntable.  If I can't make it work, I'm going to look at the suggested turntables

DR George, I have no memory of an intermission at the first showings of GREASE in the 1970s. CAMELOT and FINIAN'S RAINBOW, I remember.

Well, the movie version (which is what was showing) did not have an intermission.  We only had to sell during the pre-show, so it wasn't a madhouse, but it was packed!  I didn't find out the final count, but it was pretty close to full (the theater seats 988)!

People were dressed up and really got into it.  There was a costume contest before the movie started, but concessions went on for about 15 minutes into the start of the movie, so I couldn't see any of that.  The projected lyrics were pretty cool.  They were all animated and not just block letters like closed captioning.  Most of the songs were sung by the audience and a lot of the songs had applause after them.

And it was great seeing the movie on the big screen.  It was made in the 70s, so movie making techniques and styles were (of course) very different than movies today.  It was so much fun to watch the dancing sequences with whole bodies shown, and not just close-ups of their faces.  They had long shots (some felt as long as 30 seconds) during the dances and you knew that they really were dancing.  I love that!

I didn't see the "Sing-Along Sound of Music" last year, but a couple of the ushers who were there said that it might not have been as full as this was tonight.  It was quite the successful event and as people left, you could tell that they all loved it. ;D

I also got the weather stripping redone on the front door.  Man, does that make a difference.  Didn't get the plastic up on the last couple windows, but tomorrow is still supposed to be good weather so I'm hoping I can leave work early enough to do it

Tomorrow evening, during the Seattle Seahawks game, the Artic blast is supposed to arrive in Western Washington.  Supposedly, we will then be below freezing day and night for the next week.
