And here's the new release information:

Kritzerland is proud to present three great new releases just in time for Christmas!  First up:

THREE INCREDIBLE SCORES ON TWO CDs at a ONE CD PRICE!

JOHN WAYNE AT FOX - THE WESTERNS

THE COMANCHEROS, NORTH TO ALASKA, THE UNDEFEATED

Composed by Elmer Bernstein, Lionel Newman, Hugo Montenegro

John Wayne at Fox - not a lot of films, but some extraordinarily entertaining ones.
The Comancheros (1961), based on the 1952 novel by Paul I. Wellman, was directed by Michael Curtiz, the great director who'd done any number of classics, including some of the most beloved films of all time - Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood, Angels With Dirty Faces, The Sea Hawk, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Mildred Pierce, White Christmas, to name just a handful.  Starring were Wayne, Stuart Whitman, Ina Balin, Lee Marvin, Nehemiah Persoff and Bruce Cabot.  It's a wonderful film with colorful performances, gorgeous photography, and a rousing musical score by Elmer Bernstein.  At the time, Bernstein had just written what would become one of the most iconic western scores ever, The Magnificent Seven.  The Comancheros was his follow up western score, and it, like the film it graces, is colorful, bigger than life, and filled with action and adventure.  You know what you're in for as soon as the first chords of the main title music begin, one of Bernstein's all-time classic themes.   But the score is rife with melody and invention and Bernstein's music is as iconic and big as the Duke himself.

A year earlier, the John Wayne Fox western was North to Alaska, a big, sprawling comedy western starring the Duke, Stewart Granger, enticing Capucine, Ernie Kovacs and teen heartthrob Fabian.  The score, credited solely to Lionel Newman, but containing music by several others, fits the film like a glove.   It's got a tuneful title song by Mike Phillips, a nice song for Fabian called "If You Knew" and some fun original orchestral cues by Newman.

Next we jump to the third of the Fox Wayne westerns, the 1969 film The Undefeated, starring Wayne and Rock Hudson, along with Roman Gabriel, Lee Meriwether, Bruce Cabot, Ben Johnson, Jan-Michael Vincent, Harry Carey, Jr., Paul Fix, Richard Mulligan, John Agar and Dub Taylor.  Hugo Montenegro's music for The Undefeated is big as all outdoors, with strong themes and a real sense of storytelling.  As with many Western scores, there's a lot of Copland "Americana" as well as a stirring main theme, some great dramatic scoring, some Mexican-flavored cues and even a hoedown

Both The Comancheros and The Undefeated were previously released on CD by FSM, and North to Alaska was released on CD by Intrada - all are out of print - in the case of The Comancheros, for many years. But we're pleased to bring them all together in one great 2-CD set - they've all been newly remastered for this release.

John Wayne at Fox - The Westerns is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

NEXT UP WE HAVE A WORLD PREMIERE RELEASE!

SABRINA

and

WE'RE NO ANGELS

Composed by Frederick Hollander

Frederick Hollander may not be a familiar name to many film music fans, but he was a superb composer who wrote some terrific scores over the years. He was also a wonderful songwriter, dating back to his work in German cabaret and films - his most iconic and well-known song being the gorgeous "Falling in Love Again" from Josef von Sternberg's The Blue Angel.

The 1954 Billy Wilder film Sabrina, was an absolute delight with a brilliant cast.   Humphrey Bogart and William Holden played the brothers Larrabee, Linus and David, and the wonderful British character actor John Williams played their chauffeur, Thomas Fairchild, whose daughter is the title character, Sabrina.  But it was the magical, winsome and altogether lovable Audrey Hepburn who made the film into pure cinematic magic.  She'd become an overnight star the year before with Roman Holiday, and Sabrina was the perfect follow-up, cementing her place as one of the fastest-rising stars in Hollywood.

Wilder wanted to use popular tunes throughout Sabrina, and Hollander was the perfect choice to do those adaptations, as well as provide a few original themes.  The resulting score was a memorable and charming pastiche - in fact, it's impossible to think of Sabrina without hearing Hollander's incredible arrangements of such standards as "My Ideal," "I Don't Want to Walk Without You," "Lover," "Dream Girl," "Isn't It Romantic?" and more.   No one did this kind of score better than Hollander, and Sabrina is pure unadulterated movie scoring magic.

Two years later, Paramount released a wonderful Christmas comedy called We're No Angels, starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray as the titular angels. Once again, Hollander provides an incredibly appealing score, which has both original and memorable themes along with interpolations such as "Silent Night."

Frederick Hollander had a really long and fruitful tenure at Paramount, and to fill out this CD, we present surviving cues from several of his film scores for the studio, including The Bride Wore Boots, The Affairs of Susan, The Great McGinty, Remember the Night and Disputed Passage.  It is a pleasure to bring an entire album of Hollander music to CD. Though he is perhaps unsung these days, we hope that this potpourri of delightful music will show what an amazing talent he was.

Sabrina/We're No Angels is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

AND FINALLY A CHRISTMAS ENCORE EDITION!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

and

A CHILD IS BORN

Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann

On a very special evening in 1954, Shower of Stars, an anthology show on CBS, had their very special Christmas special that aired on December 23rd - an adaptation of Charles Dickens' beloved tale, A Christmas Carol, starring Fredric March and Basil Rathbone (as Scrooge and Marley).  It was truly a spectacular - shot on film and broadcast in color - although the majority of viewers saw it in black-and-white, as few people had the ability to watch color back in those days. The adaptation was by Maxwell Anderson, who also wrote the lyrics for the songs, and the score was by film composer Bernard Herrmann.  Weekly Variety called it "superlative TV."  They called Anderson's lyrics "poetic" and his adaptation "stunning."  Best of all, the reviewer called Herrmann's score "majestic."  Herrmann's music is indeed wonderful.  His underscoring is in the classic Herrmann mode, and his songs are quite delightful and infectiously melodic.

One year after A Christmas Carol, Herrmann was back writing another Christmas special, this time for CBS' anthology series, The General Electric Theater, which was hosted future President-to-be, Ronald Reagan.  A Child Is Born was an adaptation of Stephen Vincent Benet's blank-verse play, and featured two stars of the Metropolitan Opera, Nadine Conner and Theodor Uppman, along with the wonderful actor, Victor Jory.  The show was broadcast "live" on December 25, 1955.  This time, Herrmann received over the title billing ("A musical adaptation by Bernard Herrmann of A Child Is Born").  The Herrmann score has beautiful sung passages, and his underscoring, as always, is masterful and typically Herrmannesque.

A Christmas Carol/A Child is Born was previously released by Kritzerland in 2008 and sold out instantly.  We've received a lot of requests to rerelease it over the years.  The two scores were mastered from the best sources available.  No known master tapes survive on either title.  A Child Is Born had a promotional 10-inch record issued, and an excellent copy of it was used for mastering.  A Christmas Carol was mastered from a 15IPS tape made from what was probably the only surviving set of acetates for the show.  While the sound is archival in nature, mastering engineer James Nelson has done a great job of making it sound as good as it ever will.

A Christmas Carol/A Child is Born is limited to 1000 copies only and we are pleased to present it at a special Christmas price of $14.98, plus shipping.

Our hope is that CDs will ship by the last week of December or hopefully even sooner, but this is the busiest time of year for pressing plants, so there is the off chance that it could be early January.  But the hope is to have them out the door before Christmas.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, all! I think I actually had my first good night's sleep for some time and I'm very happy about that.  My health insurance payment cleared this morning, but my rent check has not. I'm very puzzled about this.  I do, of course, blame the postal system.

This morning i've got physical therapy, then a lot of Encores! work here. I hope the therapy goes well today, since I really wasn't into it on Monday at all. The temperature is close to 60 degrees F, which is crazy for November. Perhaps this is Indian Summer? At least I won't freeze wearing shorts to therapy.

Hugo Montenegro (THE UNDEFEATED) was one of my early publicity clients, and my recently departed friend, Michael Ansara, was the chief heavy in THE COMANCHEROS.  In fact, Ina Balin from THE COMANCHEROS was also a publicity client; also George Sherman, who produced the movie.

My wife and I watched THE RUTLES Anthology on Blu-Ray last night.

That is the 1978 mockumentary about The Beatles-like group, made by Eric Idle.

I don't think we've laughed that hard since we saw BRIDESMAIDS.

I have watched the first 4 episodes of Season 1 of Major Crimes.  I think the first episode was my least favorite.

It is very interesting to watch almost all of the same characters (minus Kyra Sedgwick and the guys who played Pope and Gabriel).

Truthfully Kyra Sedgwick really made The Closer.  Mary McDonnell is good. But she is no Kyra Sedgwick.

I think the new focus of Major Crimes was pretty interesting.  And I'm starting to warm up to the lead character more and more. Not sure yet what I think of the new female detective Sykes. So far she's sort of getting on my nerves.

But since all the supporting actors are the same. IT's still super enjoyable.

There is a book in my favorite series that came out last month. It's in binding at my library (meaning it should be releasted today). I have been holding off starting a new book in the hopes that I will be first for this book.  But it usually happens that I am always first EXCEPT when it is a more popular book that I am dying for.  Fingers crossed for this one.

THE COMANCHEROS was Michael Curtiz' last movie.  In fact, according to Michael Ansara, John Wayne wound up directing much of the film due to Curtiz' illness.

I think the movie is one of Wayne's best "fun/action" Westerns, as opposed to his more serious "dramatic" Westerns (e.g. RED RIVER, THE SEARCHERS, THE SHOOTIST).

Good morning, all.

And talk about a late one...

Fell asleep on my movie-watchin' couch, then kept waking and watching bits of movies, and didn't get up to go to bed till 3:40 in the AM.  Slept a few hours till some cats insisted on being fed, but I knew I wasn't staying up.  No way, no how.  Fed 'em (not to be confused with Fed 'ex) and crawled right back under the covers.  Accompanied by the usual zany dreams that happen when I sleep really late, I didn't know anything after that until 11:30.  Amazing.

Coffee!!!

The coffee is Starbucks "House Blend" and "Breakfast Blend" in K-cups.

I'm no Starbucks fan, but I'll certainly drink it, and the ubiquity of the chain can be a life saver when you're in an area (like the suburbs of Dallas) where they simply don't know from good coffee.

So I avoided trying their K-cups for the longest time, simply because I had found a few others I liked, and theirs are a bit pricey.  But these two are reasonably priced at one of the stores here, so I tried them, and they turned out to be, well, perfect.  These people know how to make coffee at a proper strength (hence, life savers), and that knowledge apparently translating into knowing how to pack a good K-cup.  I LOVE THESE.  There's not even any reason to go back to any of the others.  How's that for a corporate conversion, drinking the Kool-Aid, etc.?  Look at me, I'm a believer now!  Bring it on!   :)

I've had Demy-and-Legrand-ish themes running through my head for what seems like days.  Snippets of themes, actually, since I don't know this music all that well.  But I was wishing like hell I could see actual scores for UMBRELLAS and YOUNG GIRLS.  I should have started by asking if any of you can offer pointers, but I checked a couple of the usual suspicious sites on the internet and was able to talk someone into sending me a PDF of the 1979 stage score to UMBRELLAS.  I don't know how complete or faithful it is to the film score, but at first glance it looks to be quite useful and rewarding, so I'm eventually going to have to suck it up and print it out so I can properly enjoy reading it and tinkering with it on the ivories plastics.

Why thank you, DR Matthew! The DH managed to order the cheapo cable package that does not come with a DVR. I have a rehearsal tonight, so I will be missing most of the SOM. Will have to call to rectify that situation!

Yup tonight is THE SOUND OF MUSIC y'all!

In the song samples Carrie seems to be singing Goat Herd as opposed to Julie's Go Turd, so that's a plus....but she also sings tabla dhote.....I thought it was tah-bul.......but I ain't no scholar, y'all.

I am looking forward to the show....once we get out of the damned Abbey.

DR GINNY what is a DTA?

Well, I just double-checked on my cable guide; and unless Miss Underwood is doing the show twice, we will not be seeing a "live" SOUND OF MUSIC.

If I remember correctly, when MISTER ROBERTS was done "live" on TV in the 80's (Robert Hays, Kevin Bacon), they presented the show twice.

DR George, here's a question maybe you can answer:  For 16x9 HD material, what does one need to do in order to copy it to DVD-R and retain its 16x9 (anamorphic, if the term applies here) size?  Is this something you can do, or would your DVD-R copy come out as letterboxed 4x3?  (Does the question make sense?)

Lovely photo from DR TBC last night....I like production photos!

Well DR CILLA LIZ....hopefully some people on the jury are over 45 years old.....and the judge's behavior should probably be self explanatory....we've all had a boss like that at one time or another....and understand exactly how it works....

Wasn't able to be there yesterday afternoon or all day today.  Had one report from a friend that the "judge" was persuasive but not entirely honest and that the cross of her started this morning.   Will be anxious to see today's paper.  I plan to go tomorrow for at least part of the day

Yes, ChasSmith, your question makes sense.  Sadly, the DVD burner that I have is standard def and can only make DVDs in the letterboxed 4x3.  You would then have to zoom the image to fill a widescreen TV.  Otherwise, I have no idea what it would take to keep a widescreen image widescreen when recording onto the DVD burner that I have from a DVR.  I don't have any program on my computer to do such things. :-\

Our new lead makes this a different show while the cast makes it also the same.  They needed a different personality than Kyra's and someone new couldn't continue to cross the line as Kyra did.

As for the annoying Skykes, just wait the new DA is far more annoying.

At work, I have an Excel spreadsheet with the vendor names, URLs, my screen names and passwords.  My predecessor created it and I continue to use and update it.  For new passwords, I just randomly type into the password box on my spreadsheet and then copy that when I create a new account at a new website, so that it's completely random.

So this could be a password of mine:  "jt5uhoerhg9yh".  How is anyone going to figure that out?? :D

Maybe I don't have to change my password.....The most common of the passwords leaked? "123456,"

Un-frickin'-believable.

Are you referring to the password code? ;D

Yes.  It's mindboggling that there can still be people out there who are so dumb as to think that's how to come up with a password.   They really are asking to be wiped out.

Or they really need something simple to remember, but that is a bit too easy-lol

The Sound of Music has started!

:'(  I can't watch it until later this evening.  I have to leave work now to work concessions for a local play.  I didn't realize what was on TV when I signed up for it.  Oh, well.  I have BOTH of my DVRs recording it, just in case!

Be back later.

Okay, they've caught me. Audra back phrases too much, and there's not enough gravitas from her, but the show's caught me. Only a major misstep could make me dislike this production.

According to Goodreads I have read 143 books this year and am 4 books ahead schedule to reach my goal of 150 books.  If I make it to 150 books I will be very surprised.

I had better go read.

Another nutty day.  Fell back asleep, printed out orders, ate a chili cheese and onion omelet and no potatoes, picked up packages and dealt with yet more drama this afternoon.  We'll see how that all plays out but hopefully it will be fine as I don't really have to deal with most of it.

From DR TCB:
Quote
The good thing about all of these reviews and photos (besides stroking my ego) is that people who have never seen me on stage before are suddenly buying tickets for this play.

That's great!

Sorry, I agree with Maria :)

That is because you like beards.  Mr. Barrymore managed to become one of AFI's 100 Top Villains without having a beard.

Here's a painting I picked up in South Africa. It was meant to symbolize the joy of Mandela being released from prison. Great memory.

The latest from the trial today.  It sounds like what happened to Martha is finally coming into evidence.  I'm glad I'll be there tomorrow

Sorry - forgot to log out when my friends arrived to talk about the holiday-themed books we'd read.  A couple of them left shortly after 8 to get home ahead of the bad weather and the rest of us joined Richard in the family room to watch THE SOUND OF MUSIC.  Guests are all home safely now and Richard are enjoying the broadcast.

You have almost 4 weeks to read 7 books.  You could always add some novellas or shorter books if you want to make your goal.

I will say that as a trial lawyer, I know that it makes a difference if there are people there supporting the litigants.  It's almost the reverse.  If no one is there it makes a huge statement - that there is no one who cares enough to be inconvenienced to support you.   There are a lot of people who have been coming and going and watching the trial.  A couple have been there for all of it.  A couple more of us have been there for large chunks of the trial and a lot have come an gone, staying an hour or half hour or whatever they can.  I'm sure the jury notices it and it clearly means a lot to Martha.

And she has a ton of silent supporters.  I've talked to so many people who don't feel like they can go or really speak out about it but will say under their breath "I hope she wins".   She may or may not, but man she is so brave to go through this.   An the newspaper makes me laugh.  The good stuff for her made the front page, the not so good stuff was buried on page 3.  I'm thinking the reporter  may be sympathetic.

Time for bed. I enjoyed the broadcast. I didn't like the Mother Abbess, but i enjoyed a great deal of the production. I've always preferred the stage show to the film and, while this wasn't as good as it should have been, the production, managed to land its important key points correctly and move me.

Well, there's good news and bad news.  The good news is that I did record the show and will be able to make a DVD.  The bad news is that the DVR on my hi-def TV crapped out (not the first time) and I can't watch the broadcast on my hi-def TV.  But, I got the show and that's the important thing.

Back from a quite good preview performance - they didn't really care about having an audience until the last minute so we had about twenty-three people, but they really enjoyed the show from what I could tell.  And the cast was the best they've been and the lighting was finally correct.  Just before half hour I added one tiny little bit to the start of a number in the first half - because the beginning of it happens without music, it's just seemed awkward to me, almost like something's wrong.  So, I added Lloyd playing an "A" on the piano and cast now comes on vocalizing around it - worked like a charm.

Guess I should write some notes.  Wonder if the DVR worked in taping Sound of Music.  You'd think the world was ending on Facebook, which I'll talk about in the notes.
