Title: THE TWO RANTS
Post by: bk on December 15, 2013, 12:49:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had not one but two rants, and now it is time for you to post until the ranting cows come home.

Sunday morning greetings!  First post after BK means one of 2 things - either I'm in Europe or I have insomnia.  Since I'm posting from my recliner, it must be the latter.  Right before bed, I took a Claritin-D for the sneezing and sniffles, which are much better, but now I'm wide awake.  Must remember to take that med in the middle of the day!

Good morning, all! 2014 can only be better! I awakened with what I hope is not a stomach virus, but I am clearly under the weather at the moment. Between my gimp leg, a longterm project folding, my latest wound, and my state of mind, 2014 can only be an improvement over the past five months! So much for self pity.

I did sleep really well last night, after the poor sleep of the night before. I am hoping this "thing" I'm currently affected by departs soon. I really want to go to a Christmas party tonight. We'll see how the day goes.

I have the Encores! wrk to attend to. I am about whereI should be on the project, so that's good.

DR George, if there were a Mensch Award yearly given, I suspect you'd have a mantel of trophies.

DR cillaliz, I'm sorry about the piano tuning. An out of tune piano always makes every other player sound good because no group of instruments can beat that ugliness except, maybe, a consort of tubas.

BK, sorry the audience was a dud. This means they can only go up from here. Debbie Gravitte recently posted on FB that she began her first number somewhere,  looked out and a lady in the front row had her fingers up her nose!

There needs to be a book of regulations for audience behavior and a quiz. Any audience member entering a theatre who fails the exam part should be executed for crimes against humanity.

Frankly, I don't recall having that much homework...until I started college.

I didn't give a damn about algebra or geometry either, but I think that the value in taking courses like that (They were required in my high school.) is not so much learning those particular subjects, but to exercise your young mental process to think in a more abstract fashion.  That, I believe, has a useful purpose.

I definitely remember there being homework, but not which grade it started in or how much there was of it.  But I was bad at keeping up with it, including certain times when it involved something I really liked and was interested in.  I think I learned how to procrastinate on stuff like that at a very early age.  My dedication to doing homework and keeping my grades up was alarmingly similar to BK's.   :)

I had no problem with homework and it is a fruitless, futile task to rant about audiences...as was said, they are all different and some are lousy, so there it is.  Brett was the best Holmes because he was not afraid to make Holmes thoroughly dislikeable at times...as at times he could be.

Today is a first FULL read thru for Achilles/Achilles Son.....which takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  The director said that we will stop at 4 p.m. even if we don't get through the entire script!

AND we have a new script that is only available electronically, so we have been asked to bring our laptops with the script on it.  I don't have a laptop.....sad, I know.   So I just printed out the parts of the script that have ME in them....   Perhaps I will be sitting beside someone who will share a laptop in case I forgot a part....but I think I got it all.

I remember having a lot of homework when I was a kid.

My niece who is in grade 3 actually doesn't have too much. Her English/Math teacher gives her homework on Thursday that is due the next Thursday i think. But is only studying for spelling, reading, and math problems.  Her French teacher gives her homework on Tuesday which is due that Friday. It is French spelling test. French reading for a test, writing 4 sentences a week.

She actually had a lot more homework in grade two. But that was mainly because her teacher (French) really believed strongly in reading. She had each kid reading a lot of books a week at their own level. So my niece would have like 4 chapter books a week to read in French.

This year they have 50-50 french and English. And their French teacher has them all reading the same book (to study).  In English they are each reading at their own levels.

Apparently no one knows any youn people in the US because the amount of homework they are given is insane and probably quadruple what we used to get. It is hours upon hours and involves every class. As to algebra and geometry leading to abstract thinking, I think pretty abstractly and I took neither class

You are so right about the homework thing, BK!  If a kid can't have a life outside of homework, there's no balance there. Being a slave to books is only going to make them hate books. Not a good learning tool at all.

I actually find the work load to be different from when I was in school. We had to read at least 40 books in freshman English class, everything from Plato's Dialogues and a novel of Dickens to both Romeo and Juliet with West Side Story. Nowadays, it seems as if the same age group, even in the advanced classes, are not required to read more than a book a month. But students today do seem to have much more science and math work than I ever remember having.

BK I agree completely  about the homework -  what always infuriated me was the major projects that  Vixter's teachers would assign over the school holidays Christmas break, winter break and spring break -

one year when we were going away I went to the teacher and  told her that we were going on vacation to Disney World  and the entire family was not going to be held hostage to a school assignment - to my surprise she actually changed the due date of the assignment to two weeks later

I don't think that students should be required to take algebra, geometry or even a foreign language (as we had to do in WA), but there are certain subjects that should be required (e.g. English & literature, math, a basic science, such as Biology, American history and current events).  Beyond that, there can be electives.

High school is there to prepare kids for "the world," and as teenagers we are not always the best ones to decide what we need to know.  The more we learn, the better choices we can make for ourselves later.

Re audiences:
I do not woo-hoo. I am a quiet person who prefers the old-fashioned approach of applause and the occasional well-deserved standing ovation.  I feel that woo-hooing is better suited to football games than to the theatre. Unfortunately, boisterous behavior has become so common that anything less may be construed as a lack of appreciation. For me, it is not. I simply show my appreciation a little more quietly.

Bruce, you knew from an early age exactly what you wanted to do in life--and you did it. Most high school kids don't really know yet and, as Druxy pointed out, may not be good judges. You didn't need academics to follow your dream, but for many careers they are essential. Going to lots of movies and plays, as you did, was an education of sorts for your career, which is quite different from hanging out at the mall or being idle. I'm a big believer in education, but I do feel it needs to be geared to the student. I'm very grateful for my own education.

In my high school we had the option of taking High School Math - and that's what I took.  I hated all that stuff - science, math - just not for me and why should I be forced to take something that's not for me - make it an elective.

I had no idea.  I took algebra and waited to take geometry at SMCC.

The last class I wanted in high school was calculus and I had no use for trigonometry, so I stopped math after Algebra 2. Because I did, I had to take one semester of math in college.

I also took four years of science in high school (biology, chemistry, anatomy and physics), thinking I could forego it in college. But no, you had to have four semesters of science for a bachelor of arts degree. Then midway through, they changed the rules and you had to take two classes in sequence (a 101 and a 102) and you had to have a lab class, so I ended up with five semesters of science.

I remember very little of it and squeaked through geology lab only because all the lab aides were movie freaks and I was writing movie reviews for the student paper back then.

Boy, do I need sleep.  And this time I'd better get it.  Got to rise but not shine at (ready for it?) 5:15 AM, then leave at 6:00 AM to get to the high school that hires me to play in the orchestra for their Christmas concerts and spring musicals.  Rehearsal would normally have been today, but was cancelled due to the storm.  Concerts are the next three nights.  Oy, vey, and gevalt.

I'm sure dear reader Jeanne knows well that I'm not talking about an audience that woo-hoos, that doesn't interest me at all and I don't care for it.  But that's not what this was about - this was about a completely dead audience, the worst I've ever seen and I hope to never see one like it again.  Today we had a sold out house, mostly elderly, and while they weren't the most vocal, they had great energy, applause was real and sustained and they were great.

I did sleep really well last night....

I liked doing homework.  I enjoyed math, until we got to imaginary numbers in calculus, now that made no sense to me so I lost interest.  Now if you really want to talk homework, in law school we had to read 100+ page chapters for the next day's class in each of two  or three classes.  Sometimes you got a couple days to read it. And be grilled on it in class.  That's the second year, when they work you to death

I don't remember a lot of homework in the grades.  Maybe a couple work sheets or something.   I had a fair amount in high school.  I took all the college prep classes....well I didn't take calculus or physics in high school, but all the rest. So there was always math home work, reading for lit classes etc.  I was also in choir, swing choir, band, jazz band, and a multitude of small groups, did theater, debate and I'm sure I'm leaving out some things. We rehearsed jazz band at 7:30 am and we finished with swing choir about 7:30 at night, 9:00 if we were rehearsing a play.  So I was at school most of the time.  It seems like there was still time to mess around with friends and get homework done

I will say one really nice thing about being in a smaller school is you can be in everything if you want to.  I just wanted to be in music and drama.  In my free time at school I was in the band room practicing

There was a lot of snow here today. And tonight the roads weren't as clear as they should have been.

And someone did a very dangerous move that could have been very bad. Luckily nothing happened. But we were driving slowly in the right hand lane and just about to get to a green light. And someone came out of a gas station and did not look. They cut right in front of us.

Luckily there were no cars in the middle lane. We sort of swerved there. But it could have been very bad.

It's crazy enough that people drive at crazy speeds on the highway when the roads are not clear. But not looking when you are turning onto a road that has snow on it. Just stupid.
