Well, you've read the notes, the notes had gluten and plenty of it, and now it is time for you to post until the gluten free cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ZEITGEBER!
-
First?
FIRST??
Well, good morning, all. Top o' the mornin' to y'all.
-
good morning to all

First?
FIRST??
Well, good morning, all. Top o' the mornin' to y'all.
Being first means you have to take the trash out and walk the dog.
-
Being third means you just go with whatever is happening ahead of you and try not get it in the way.
-
Good morning, all! I had a horrible time settling in to sleep last night, but I then slept very well. After the referral mess on Monday, I return to physical therapy, and I'll leave for that in about 90 minutes.
When I get home, I'll do some work on the ROBERTA libretto, tidy up a bit, and take a nap.
TOD:
I like P.G. Wodehuse's comedy lyrics, so here are some things from his shows with Kern:

For the record, BK:
I have been gluten free for a couple of years, and since I have been, I feel much better than before.
-
Thursday!
Vibes for ROB!!!!
DR VIXMOM I love those pictures! I think GRAVITY is one of those movies that really should be seen on the B I G S C R E E N.....although if you don't llke Sandra or George....it wouldn't help.
-
I have heard some people refer to their approach to food as "flexitarian."

So many.....but I will make a short list:
"Swing Your Bag"
"Pitiful Penniless Bums"
"Sad Was the Day"
"Easy Street"
"Aldolpho"
"Guys & Dolls"
-
I have been reading Stephen King's book on writing (On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft). It is interesting, and a lot of it seems to square with bk's description of his writing process and experience.
-
"Swing Your Bag"
I always do! :)
-
Morning, all!
TOD: "Adelaide's Lament." Full stop. Everything else is a fight for second place, except maybe "You Can't Get a Man With a Gun."
-
DR Ginny, great news re: DS Rob!
-
I have been a nervous wreck all morning waiting for my sister to call. My niece was doing a retelling of a story for a competition at her school (in front of the whole school and the parents of the kids doing it). I just found out that it well very well. They are just waiting for the results.
-
Thursday morning greetings! It's sunny, but cold and blustery here in SW Ohio today. I have several errands and appointments this afternoon, starting with a haircut at 12:30.
-
Thank you for all the vibes and good wishes for Rob. I can hardly wait to tell you all about his new job!
-
I will add my best wishes for Rob's new job, DR Ginny!!
-
TOD:
It is too early in the morning for me to think of any, although I am sure I have many.
-
BK, gluten free is not just a fad. Gluten intolerance is quite a serious problem for many people including a young lady that I work with who was constantly, painfully sick off and on for years until the doctors recently discovered that gluten was the problem.
Since she went gluten free two years back she has had excellent health.
-
I will add my best wishes for Rob's new job, DR Ginny!!
Thanks, DR MBarnum!
-

"Shut Up, Gerald" and "The Grass is Always Greener" - "Woman of the Year"

And, of course,"Gluten it Be Loverly" from "My Fair Larder".
-
DR Ron Pulliam has helped me recall some songs for the TOD: Several songs from LIL ABNER and at least one or two from FLOWER DRUM SONG.
Still not awake enough to remember any titles.
-
Happy to see that finally, the south Indian film industry has tried a (serious) gay themed movie. It looks pretty good. It is a Malayalam language film.

And speaking of Indian films, I have finally another interview up on-line. It is with actor Deep Joshi. He has done some excellent work in the past, and appears to be continuing to do so. His next couple of films look to be quite good!

My boss has just informed me that there are changes in the works that will affect how I create contract numbers for our leases. He's not sure we will be told when the changes take place, only that they'll take place and we'll have to play catch-up.
It's the County way.

I'm just proud to have sparked some recall!

I think I made the point in the notes that some people are gluten free out of necessity - I'm quite sure I made that point in the notes. I'm equally sure that there are many people, including some I know right here in LA, that have gone gluten free for no other reason than it is a current fad. And I can equally guarantee that they will not be gluten free a year from now.

I'm up. STORM WATCH 2014: The sun is out.
-
It did rain a little bit on and off during the evening, but the dire predictions, as always, did not happen.
-
Here is the dire report. Now, I suppose that the second storm, due tomorrow, could happen, but if it's like the first storm, it will be like watering the lawn.
"There's going to be so much rain in just a couple of days that a lot of areas might not be able to handle that much rain," said NBC4 meteorologist Crystal Egger. "It just runs downhill like a concrete driveway."
Two storms will usher moisture into the region, moving down from Northern California Wednesday morning before bringing about a half-inch to an inch of rain to Southern California.
The heaviest rain Wednesday is expected after the evening commute and into the overnight hours. The more powerful of the two storms will arrive Thursday evening and bring up to 2 inches of rain in central and southern valleys, 2 to 4 inches in foothill areas and 6 inches of rain in some mountains.
The National Weather Service described it as the most significant storm in the last three years in Southern California, adding that thunderstorms are possible Friday and Saturday. Showers could continue into early Sunday.
Download: NBCLA Weather App
The city of Glendora issued an Orange Level alert for residents in the burn area, meaning voluntary evacuations are in effect. Residents are directed to remove vehicles, trash bins and other obstructions from streets prior to evacuating.
The city's evacuation center is at the Crowther Teen & Family Center located at 241 W. Dawson Ave.
Residents who do not evacuate will be asked to sign a Refusal to Evacuate form, indicated they understand the risk involved.
"The alert level was raised to orange from yellow due to the Weather Forecasts and the field conditions within the foothills of Glendora," according to a city advisory.
The city could issue a Red Level alert, which includes mandatory evacuations."
All told, there was probably about two hours of what you'd call actual rain. So little, in fact, that there is no wetness on the street outside whatsoever.
-
We had torrential rainfall overnight. It was so hard and loud at one point that it woke me out of a deep sleep.
The next phase will happen later tonight and tomorrow morning. The worst of it is aimed at Southern California, according to local meteorologists who, as it turns out, also say we'll get a fair amount of rain out of it, as well.
-
My small point was, we were all told that last night (yesterday, really, before they just changed it and never acknowledged the yesterday part) there was going to be substantial rain here - there wasn't. And right now, the sun is out. Maybe tomorrow will prove to be correct. I knew it was raining heavily where you were.
-
I was hoping to sleep a bit later than nine, but alas.
-
And i am home from physical therapy! It's been a good morning.
-
Page two? Really?
-
People are out and about - in shorts and t-shirts.
-
Trying to get my arse moving on a couple of little projects here.
-
Thank you for all the vibes and good wishes for Rob. I can hardly wait to tell you all about his new job!
Additional Congratulations to DS Rob!!

Exactly. I work with a woman who has Celiac disease and for people like her who need it, it's definitely a good thing. A couple of years ago, I'd read (skimmed) an article that said that people who go gluten free just to lose weight, won't. That's not what it's for. And people are needlessly spending a lot of extra money because it's the latest "trend."

That's great, Michael!
-
Thanks DR George.
-
That was a very good interview DR MBARNUM with some nice photos and film clips.
-
Page two? Really?
-
Had a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich to tide me over till later this evening.
-
Finally found our musical director - an old acquaintance, Wayne Moore. He will just be getting back from a tour of some I Love Lucy show, the very day we begin, so the timing was kind of perfect.
-
From DR Dan M:
Sorry, forgot all about "Sullivan's Travels"!
:)
I knew I didn't need to name the film.
-
I have been a nervous wreck all morning waiting for my sister to call. My niece was doing a retelling of a story for a competition at her school (in front of the whole school and the parents of the kids doing it). I just found out that it well very well. They are just waiting for the results.

Rob's job was the good news we received this week. Here's the bad news, Richard's last uncle:
Judge George H. Palmer (http://www.vnews.com/home/10886726-95/judge-george-h-palmer)
-
For the record, BK:
I have been gluten free for a couple of years, and since I have been, I feel much better than before.
I second those remarks and will add: against my wishes, my gastroenterologist confirmed my celiac sprue disease back in 2002, so I have had to be gluten-free since then, otherwise I will be one with the water closet all day. If only Marlo Thomas would reprise her children's show and only this time call it "Free To Be Gluten-Free". The pizzarias in NYC taunted me continually when I first learned to live without dear old gluten. However, I have recently learned from a physician out here in the desert that wheat gluten does in fact cause changes in the collagen causing the skin to prematurely age. So, there's that to think about.

We stopped at Best Buy because they finally got in one of these OLED TVs, this one made by LG, a company I know nothing about.
DA Bruce, I highly recommend LG products. They often claim "LG" stands for "Life's Good" but in actuality it stands for "Lucky Goldstar" a South Korean company that was formerly just Goldstar. I believe they have made the electronic "guts" for many other well-known and higher-priced brands aside from releasing products under their own logo. I had LG DVD and CD players and TVs and washers and dryers, and all were very good, durable items. Yes, LG doesn't have the cache of some other brands, but remember that the innards of those other brands may have been made by LG.

Since it hasn't yet been mentioned (and as a fan of vintage Mad Magazine), I would recommend songs from "The Mad Show" as funny Broadway numbers. There were some very good lyricists associated with it, including Mr. Sondheim, as in "The Boy From . . . .":

Interesting about LG. I was very interested in getting the LG's when I purchased my new washer & dryer but they only came in the extra large and the door were more difficult to open than in the medium sized Brovo's I purchased, but the LG's sure were nice.

Hello, everyone.
I was in desperate need of both gas and groceries, so I did an errand run earlier. I don't know if the heavy rain that is forecast for the next few days will materialize, but I wanted to get it done while it's easy to get around town.
-
Ginny, so glad to hear Rob's news!
(And no, DRs, Ginny did not pay me to post the question last night--it was just good timing.)
-

(And no, DRs, Ginny did not pay me to post the question last night--it was just good timing.)
Thanks, DR Jeanne! Yes, you kind of read my mind...
-
I am off to have some supper with Richard and then go to my current events discussion at the library - bye for now!
-
I have to be careful with gluten. I don't have full-blown celiac disease, but if I eat too much gluten my gut gets irritated. I know how to soothe it--both glutamine and DGL are excellent. I buy gluten-free bread and try to keep my gluten consumption to a minimum. I am thankful I can eat a certain amount without problems.
-
I haven't read the book WHEAT BELLY, but the doctor who wrote it claims that the newer, high-yield wheat is the culprit.
-
BTW, gluten isn't just in wheat. It's also in oats, barley, and rye. All favorites of mine. Sigh.
-
Condolences to Richard on his loss.
-
Don't forget almost all of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is quite funny. From "My Fair Lady", "The Rain in Spain".
"The Company Way" from "How to Succeed . . .".
-
Condolences to DR Ginny's DS Richard.

Thirty seven years ago today, Miss Allison Hayes died....a combination of medical mistakes combined to cost her her life.

We had quite a bit of rain overnight here in West LA. It was forecast to start about 2 pm, but didn't begin until late last night. Today is beautiful, as it so often is after a rain.
-
BTW, gluten isn't just in wheat. It's also in oats, barley, and rye. All favorites of mine. Sigh.
I know the feeling. But, there are companies that make "gluten-free" oats. The oats themselves are actually gluten-free, but the manufacturing process "contaminates" them with gluten. I have found gluten-free oats at Trader Joe's. There are also Bob's products, Van's products and Nature's Path products that contain gluten-free oats. One of my favorite company names is "Glutenfreeda", which has good food items and also Glutino. When I began back in 2001/2002, there wasn't all that much out there. I felt like the Mel Brooks 2,000 year-old man trying to find natural foods and having to settle for rocks, trees, etc. Now, it's much better. I also check to make sure the food is non-GMO. You don't want to avoid wheat and then wind up eating genetically modified corn.

With a food allergy, I have often found the reverse of that to create desperation! ;)

My condolences to DR Ginny and her family.

Page three? Really?
-
Rehearsal begins in about fifteen minutes.
-
Then off to a light supper/meeting.
-
Hi All, Sorry to be E and T. I had a bunch of deadlines all at the same time, so the only thing I could do was work about 12-16 hour days ( a typical Vixmom day). It's been exhausting, but I've basically met all my deadlines. I can easily finish up the rest of it tomorrow. My brain died about 3:00 so I went home.
-
I haven't caught up so congrats to those who had good things, and vibes to those who didn't

I knew an offer was made, but you didn't tell us he accepted it! I'm sorry to hear about Richard's uncle.
-
Have to run as I'm meeting Paul for dinner and then going to see The Monuments Men

I hadn't heard about gluten-free oats. I basically gave up oatmeal. It was just too irritating.
Yes, there's a lot more to choose from now. I'm a big fan of Food for Life breads and, more recently, Udi's. Trader Joe's now has two gluten-free breads, both of which are quite good--and reasonably priced.
-
I don't recall exactly when I cut back on wheat, but it was probably about the same time you did, Dan. I used to read a lot of Dr Sherry Rogers' books. NO MORE HEARTBURN was my bible for digestive issues. It contains a wealth of information, and I then followed up with a phone consultation with her. There is far more awareness of these issues now.
-
BTW, gluten isn't just in wheat. It's also in oats, barley, and rye. All favorites of mine. Sigh.
Some time ago, I remember seeing a bottle of vanilla extract with "Gluten-free" featured prominently on the label. I didn't know vanilla could even have gluten. :-\

Topic of the Day:
Beauty That Drives a Man Mad [Some Like It Hot]
The Boy From... (not officially "Broadway," but lyrics by Sondheim...good enough for me ;))
Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad [Song & Dance and/or Tell Me On a Sunday]
The Grass is Always Greener [Applause]
Shy [Once Upon a Mattress]
That'll Show Him [Forum]
There's Always a Woman (cut from Anyone Can Whistle)
And many more.
-
Most vanilla's have alcohol, and I suppose what grain the alcohol is made with might cause it to have gluten.
-
Yes, there's a lot more to choose from now. I'm a big fan of Food for Life breads and, more recently, Udi's. Trader Joe's now has two gluten-free breads, both of which are quite good--and reasonably priced.
Udi's is good, I like it. Try Rudi's, it's sometimes at Costco. Three Bakers is another good brand.
Whole Foods has some other brands, including their store brand that also makes cakes, cookies and pies.
Against The Grain is another brand to try. They use as their primary flour, tapioca, which gives a really nice texture, particularly for the pizzas they make and that Whole Foods carries.
-
Well, I must be off. Today is the rededication of The Washington Center for the Performing Arts. They remodeled and updated the outside, so it's much more protective of the building underneath it all. I was just going to go as a patron, but they needed more volunteers, so I signed up to work for it.
Be back later!
-
Most vanilla's have alcohol, and I suppose what grain the alcohol is made with might cause it to have gluten.
That makes sense...I never thought of that.
-
Something is wrong with my left wrist. I don't even know how to describe the problem but it is very disconcerting & occasionally somewhat painful.
-
For about two years I was strictly off wheat. The conventional wisdom said that if you're allergic to wheat you substitute spelt. I did so, only to learn that I don't tolerate spelt much better than wheat. I was eating wheat-free cereals, one of which was high in corn. Ditto corn. I had to give up a lot of foods, but I no longer have the allergic reactions.
-
Bye, all!
-
BTW, gluten isn't just in wheat. It's also in oats, barley, and rye. All favorites of mine. Sigh.
Some time ago, I remember seeing a bottle of vanilla extract with "Gluten-free" featured prominently on the label. I didn't know vanilla could even have gluten. :-\
Lots of products say that now. I suspect a lot of people don't understand what gluten is, but they think it's good to be gluten-free. I think that's the reasoning behind the labeling.
-
Most vanilla's have alcohol, and I suppose what grain the alcohol is made with might cause it to have gluten.
Yes, be careful. But, most "clear" spirits are okay due to distillation. Recently, I have read that there are new "gluten-free" bleu cheeses (and bleu cheese type cheeses). These kinds of cheese are started on bread molds. The molds mimic the gluten protein and if you have any sensitivity to gluten, these cheeses will cause problems. I have to avoid all bleu cheeses unfortunately even after trying the so-called new bleu.
-

There are obviously people who have celiac disease and who need to be gluten-free. But I think there are also people who have had stomach issues and such who are just trying to see if going gluten-free will make them feel better.

That was a very good interview DR MBARNUM with some nice photos and film clips.
Thank you JRand. It was a fun one to do, also. I think he has a good career ahead.

I couldn't tolerate spelt either. I think it's too closely related to wheat. Sorghum is a good substitute.
Pamela's brands from Ukiah, CA has some excellent almond based flours (provided you do not have a tree nut allergy). I think their pancake mix is wonderful (you can even make chocolate chip cookies from it).
-

Thanks for the suggestions. Whole Foods' prices are pretty high for these breads. There's a health food store near me that used to put them on sale on a rotation basis and I'd stock up. Then I discovered TJ's, which are equal to the sale price every day. They freeze well, so that helps.

I have been a nervous wreck all morning waiting for my sister to call. My niece was doing a retelling of a story for a competition at her school (in front of the whole school and the parents of the kids doing it). I just found out that it well very well. They are just waiting for the results.
I am sorry you couldn't be there.
I wouldn't have wanted to be there. I was nervous enough just thinking about her speaking in front of 500 people.
They ended up judging the french and english speeches together. And they only gave the prizes to grade 4s (she is in grade 3). And they gave two of the prizes to the English speeches (hers was in french). It's much harder for an English kid to give a speech in french.
It was just an honor for her to be chosen to speak. Only two kids from each class got to do it (one french and one english, but the same kid cannot do both).

The Boy From... (not officially "Broadway," but lyrics by Sondheim...good enough for me ;))
Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad [Song & Dance and/or Tell Me On a Sunday]

Shy [Once Upon a Mattress]
That'll Show Him [Forum]
There's Always a Woman (cut from Anyone Can Whistle)
And many more.
No, "The Boy From . . . ." is a song I mentioned earlier and it is from a Broadway show from 1966, so it counts. :)

Dan, you're probably right about the spelt being too close to wheat. They're biological cousins, I believe.
-
Jane, do you think you sprained your wrist somehow? It's very easy to get a sprain. (At least for me, as I'm a klutz.)

I think that was mainly suggested as an option for people who are gluten-free by choice. I learned that the hard way unfortunately.
-
DR Ginny, the obituary for DH Richard's uncle was quite nice.

It was the conventional wisdom for many years for people who are allergic to wheat.

See how many posts Bruce's gluten-free tirade generated?

DR Dan M, "The Mad Show" was never on Broadway; it was an Off-Broadway show, which means it did not play in a large mid-town theatre in the theatre district.

Oops! I guess I root for the underdogs. I tend to like Off-Broadway shows better.

Vibes for the wrist of DR JANE.

Condolences to DR Ginny and Richard.

I've had no problem with my LG TV.

Hey, page 5!

The next storm system seems to be converging.

What a great experience for her to participate in this.

Jane, do you think you sprained your wrist somehow? It's very easy to get a sprain. (At least for me, as I'm a klutz.)
I don't think so, though certain motions like turning my wrist make it hurt it doesn't feel like a sprain. I'm wondering now if it is connected to the tingling I have had in my thumb & fingers for so long it has become almost normal. :(
I washed dishes and it wasn't bad but now it feels worse. I have a large pan to be washed which I will leave for Keith to do.
Fortunately it isn't terribly painful but if it doesn't improve soon I will need to get it checked.
-
Thank you DR Jrand.

I think the gluten free fad has been helpful to people who really need to be gluten free with increased labeling on packages and in restaurants.
-
I hope the vegan fad increases and never goes away.

Thursday!

Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre is presenting another Broadway-bound musical, A ROOM WITH A VIEW, in April. My question is, do you really want to open a new muscial on the same day that the Titanic sank?
-
I am so sorry to hear this Ginny - please give my condolences to Richard
-
Hope your wrist feels better DR Jane!

Oh btw, DR Jane I am picking up Fear Nothing from the library tomorrow. But i have at least 2 books I want to read before it (up to maybe 4).

Oh btw, DR Jane I am picking up Fear Nothing from the library tomorrow. But i have at least 2 books I want to read before it (up to maybe 4).
I wish I had it to read right now. I just finished Jo Nesbo's book "The Cockroaches" and don't want to begin the other book I have checked out, BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVERS: LIFE, DEATH, AND HOPE IN THE MUMBA UNDERCITY by Katherine Boo. I expect to enjoy the book but since it is for my book discussion group which isn't until the 11th I want to wait to begin it.
I'm currently browsing my eBook library for available books. I think I shall read AUNT JANE'S NIECES because of the title.
-
Thank you to DRs JRand, Jeanne, Dan M, Elmore, Jennifer, MBarnum, KevinH, ChasSmith, and Vixmom. Uncle George did, indeed, live a full life. It was quite tragic between 1988 and 1992, when he lost both his first wife and then their daughter, who was only 44 when she died. After his remarriage they moved to New England and we only saw him once, in 2006 when he came to Ohio for Richard's mother's 90th birthday party.
-
DR Jane, might you have carpal tunnel syndrome?
-
It sounds like it but how, in my left wrist, I'm not sure. Years ago I was convinced I had it in my write wrist and not believing the first doctor I went to another specialist for a 2nd opinion. They both said no but the pain has never gone away. This pain is different so I suppose I should check into it again. I'm not sure if I should see my regular doctor first, the orthopedists, or someone else. I will probably begin with my regular doctor just because of the the tingling symptoms.
-
I stopped browsing the library after checking out two books and putting one on the wish list. I also removed two different books from my wish list, that became available, deciding I don't really want to read them.

I have a feeling in my left wrist bone as if it were bruised it has been bothering me for months - its a mild pain nothing deabilitating - my doctor said it is most likely arthritis
:(

Condolences to Ginny and Richard~~~~

We have 100 percent chance of snow on Saturday. I'm happy
-
Although Saturday is the Siouxland Film Festival. It's all shorts. I'm not on the committee anymore, but had planned to go. It's not that big a deal I may just sleep
-
Your cats are WILD.
-
I am planning to be here for the Oscars on Sunday. Are they live or memorex? Can we comment or do we have to not post spoilers. Inquiring minds want to know

LOL. no, my cats are spoiled rotten

Glad to hear rehearsal was fun. I would have ordered the same at the Cafe, only gluten-free. :D
-
Better go. I"m REALLY tired, it's been about 12 days in a row of overusing my brain. The movie helped, but I need sleep.
-
Sleep is a very good thing to do on snow days, IMHO. Unless, of course, you must shovel. In LA, we have no snow days. I miss them.
-
Jane, I had tingling in my feet and legs many years ago due to peripheral neuropathy. Most inconvenient on stairs. Is there a chance you're diabetic? Mine wasn't a blood sugar issue and went away.
-
I've found that hyaluronic acid is wonderful for arthritis. Life Extension (lef.org) has it in their Fast-Acting Joint Formula. I had relief in two days.

Thank you I will look into that I need to be sure it does not interact with my thyroid meds ( I had a thyroidectomy 26 years ago)
-
Cilla, I am sorry for the crazy days I know its tiring but i am glad your "scary slow" period is over - ours is not and I am getting increasingly concerned
Please ask all your friends and relations to immediately buy real estate in NY --- and give them my number :)

I just watched the first two episodes of season two of the US version of House of Cards - enjoying it!!

Yes, you need to check on that. One of the things I like about Life Extension is that anyone--member or not--can call and speak to a medical advisor free! I always prefer to talk to my own doc, but I've taken advantage of this service several times and found it quite helpful.

I would be happy to buy some NY real estate, but I know better to ask if there's anything affordable. Besides, I plan to stay here a bit longer.

I wonder how DR Ryacko is holding up. I think he's trying to stay as busy as BK.
-
Awaiting details from DR Ginny of Rob's new job.

Judge George H. Palmer (http://www.vnews.com/home/10886726-95/judge-george-h-palmer)
My condolences to the entire Palmer family.

My sister loves the movie, so for Christmas I bought her, her boyfriend and myself tickets to see the show. I'm looking forward to it. :)
We're not going until a couple of weeks into the run, so we won't be there that night.

Well, I must go to bed early. Tomorrow, I will be the only supervisor at work in the Collection Services department, so I need to get to work early. Normally, my supervisor, the Collection Services Manager is here, but she's taking the day off, so someone needs to be there. And since I'm the only other supervisor that regularly works on Friday, it's me.
So, good night, all! 8)
