Title: BLIMPIE
Post by: bk on March 05, 2014, 12:35:16 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Blimpies, and now it is time for you to post until the Blimpie cows come home.

There used to be a Blimpie's here in Tumwater, but it closed a few years ago.  I really liked them.  I wonder if there still are any in the area.

I just checked and it looks like the closest one is in a Wal-Mart in Yelm.  That's about 20 minutes away...a little to far to go for lunch, but maybe I could go after work sometime.  We'll see. :)

Why is it not socially acceptable to eat a slice of cake for breakfast, but OK to eat, like, three donuts?       :)

Who says it is not socially acceptable?!?!?!

I've had a slice of New Orleans King Cake with my coffee for the past three days.  I'll have one later when I get back from the optometrist.

This was actually my first King Cake.  Never had it before.  I always thought it would be some horrible sugary confection not to my liking.  Well, I was wrong.  The cake itself is very much like a coffee cake, with cinnamon, and I shouldn't have let the multi-colored frosting and sprinkles throw me.  It's a great coffee cake-style frosting, and would be good any time of day, of course, but in the morning it's really fine.

Good morning, all! I guess the news about Rob's job got to my subconscience, since I dreamed that DR Ginny and Richard and I flew to Los Angeles for the Radio City Christmas show. I remember the three of us arriving at Radio City and I remember the box office where i bought a ticket for the 5am show. I would swear that the hotel clerk was Ruth Kobart, and that's all i can remember. I'm happy that Rob is no longer a ward of the state.

This morning I've got physical therapy and a few errands to run.

I like DEAD OF NIGHT but haven't sat down and seriously watched it in years.  Must do that.  The one thing I always noticed about the transfer played on TCM is that the audio seemed very scratchy.

I'm the only person I know who has never seen SOMEWHERE IN TIME.  One thing I've heard is that when it plays at a theater nowadays, much of the audience goes in costume.

I had a partial L.A. dream, too.  A lot of other stuff was involved before and after, but I was at a beach just watching the people and everything, and my dad was with me.  Neither of us, of course, was our current age.  Suddenly I realized it was one of those exceptional crystal clear days, and there was Catalina Island practically right in front of us.  I pointed this out to my dad, and as we talked about it I saw how the people on the island looked just as close to us as the people on the beach in front of us.  All very surreal, of course.  Another moment or two, and I went on to another scene in the dream.

I've had a few such dreams over the years, in which I'm seeing some kind of a vista with surreal clarity.  Usually I think they're from a great height, such as from the edge of a cliff, or perhaps I'm "flying" in that dream sense and I'm over this incredible vista.  Not my most common dream theme, but it pops up now and then.

I don't recall having a "flying" dream in quite a while. I love the idea of surreal clarity.

I did spend an overnight on Catalina Island growing up, as part of Indian Guides.

I have also never had a Blimpie.  Never been in a Blimpie, never eaten anything from a Blimpie.  That seems odd, but the number of times I've eaten from Subway isn't even that great.  And for no good reason.  I love that stuff.  I just don't think about it when out and about and needing some food.

Never did that, but I've been over on the ferry, and via private boats.

And I've flown a Cessna over there -- as passenger, then a couple of times myself when I had my license.  It's quite the thrill, approaching the island and landing at that mountaintop airport.  And then of course eating a buffalo burger in the airport restaurant.  Makes for a fine afternoon.

Good morning, all.

Great news on the Sweeney being broadcast. I was watching the BBC tribute to Sondheim on his 80th birthday and Terfel sings a couple of numbers. He really looks crazy, almost like Frankenstein's monster. It's been my favorite part of what I've seen so far. That and Judi Dench singing "Send in the Clowns."

We finally watched 12 YEARS A SLAVE last night.

It is an excellent picture, but difficult to watch.

As good as it is though, I don't know if it will pass the test of time.

50 years from now, will viewers still want to see it, like today we still want to see other Best Pictures (e.g. GRAND HOTEL, GONE WITH THE WIND, CASABLANCA, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, ALL ABOUT EVE, ON THE WATERFRONT, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, etc.)?

The same goes for SCHINDLER'S LIST.

King Cakes are, apparently, different from bakery to bakery.  I had a piece yesterday.  It was like the Italian Christmas panettone with raisins, and no taste except for a very sweet (too much so) icing with sprinkles.

I wish I had tasted the cake ChasSmith tasted.

All the talk last week of "gluten free" foods made me curious to try "gluten free" bread, so I picked some up while grocery shopping over the weekend....I kind of like it. The taste, that is, not the price, however. $6.99 a loaf at Fred Meyer stores!!!

I did find some at Trader Joe's that was only $3.99 a loaf...still spendy, though.

Back, with basically NO change in prescription, though we're going to try a different contact lens in one eye.

I'm definitely on the road to eventually needing the cataract surgery, but I've known that, and it should be a few years hence.  Everyone I know who's had it has reported it to be effortless and loves the results, including my dad at nearly 80 years of age.  But like a bottle of $2.99 Paul Masson, I won't do it before it's/its time.
Title: Re: BLIMPIE
Post by: ChasSmith on March 05, 2014, 08:27:00 AM
And I found the Blimpie.  This one isn't a standalone store; it's one of the featured foodstuffs in one of those more modern convenience stores at a large gas station.  But I'll try it sometime.

I don't think I knew it in L.A.  When I moved here, they seemed to be a NYC thing, but I never tried one because -- and maybe this was my experience with Subway -- the sub/hoagie/grinder type of sandwich at the large chains never seemed totally satisfactory to me.  Like DR Ron said, the bread was often the weak point.  I do think Subway has greatly improved in the last few years, and their breads are part of that improvement.

King Cakes are, apparently, different from bakery to bakery.

Since they're new to me, I wondered about that -- whether there's one way of making them or if it varies.  I don't know who baked this one, whether it was the local store bakery where it was bought, or if it was brought in from somewhere.  But it was definitely to my liking.

Re: BLIMPIE

In my gluten-filled days, I very much preferred Blimpie's to Subway.  Often, you could find Blimpie's in Manhattan, but when Riese Restaurants took over many of the usual suspects franchises in NYC (Roy Rogers, Pizza Hut, Baskin-Robbins and Subway), Blimpie's became harder to find.  Up until I had to switch to gluten-free, around 2002, I still liked Blimpie's.

This sounds...interesting.  Costco sells some coconut oil that I wanted to try, but never had a good reason.  I won't buy a gigantic-sized container just to try it out, though.  I'll look at Fred Meyer.  They have a fairly decent health food and organic section.

At my last eye exam (in recent weeks), not only did my prescription change (requiring expensive new progressive lenses), but I also learned that I will have to have cataract surgery, most likely sooner rather than later. The conventional wisdom had been that you should put it off as long as possible, but apparently that may be changing.

At least it is now a conventional, outpatient procedure.

To BK re: your first paragraph of today's notes-- "RADAR instead of Reader"

Dear Bruce:  (1) Are you familiar with, or have you read, Georges Perec's 1969* novel known in English as "A Void" in which the letter E is not used?  I recall that it took many years for this novel to appear in an English translation, due to many things, but I understand that it was difficult to not only maintain the lack of the letter E but also to retain the word play and multiple meanings that were inherent in the original French; and, (2) As a writer yourself, would you be able to (or even want to) create a literary work avoiding a letter or containing some word games, etc?

*Ironic that the novel's original publication date coincides with your remembrance of Blimpie's

Re: DEAD OF NIGHT

I love portmanteau movies and "Dead of Night" was always a lot of fun.  It's a solid entertainment and remains so even after seeing it so many times and having revealed its secrets to me long ago.

While they may not be in the same tier as DoN, I have an affection for the Amicus Productions movies that were made in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly "Dr. Terror's House of Horrors" with Peter Cushing and a very young looking Donald Sutherland, and "Torture Garden" with Burgess Meredith, Peter Cushing and Jack Palance as a collector of Poe (!).  If you haven't seen these movies, they are well worth a look-see.  The other Amicus movies that are "worthy" portmanteaux are the ones that were based on "Tales From The Crypt" (1972) and "Vault of Horror" (1973) stories and are so-titled.  True popcorn flicks!

Re: DEAD OF NIGHT

I love the Amicus anthologies!

I bought A Void years ago, after reading Perec's "Life: A User's Manual." But I've never had time to read it. I want to, but no time.

Greetings, all,

I'm still in half-coma mode today, because I can be. I realized this morning that I've only been home from arctic Maine for two weeks and a day. And in that time, I have had 4 auditions, 3 rehearsals, 2 flights (Burbank to Phoenix and back), 1 corporate show and 1 Kritzerland show. And all of that while racing to get my car passable for smog check. No wonder I'm a singing zombie.  :D

Today, I got plenty of nuttin', and nuttin's plenty for me. Hump day is being-a-lump day, and happily so.

Hope yours is wonder-ific!

They're loads of fun!  Another one that is fun is non-Amicus but very much in their vein, and which you may have seen, is "Tales That Witness Madness" with Jack Hawkins.

Even though it doesn't get good reviews, I have always enjoyed the Rod Steiger anthology "The Illustrated Man" based on Ray Bradbury's stories.  For those who don't know, Rod Steiger's body is covered in tattoos that have been bewitched.  The person who looks at any one of them gets caught up in a story relating to the tattoo.

Another anthology movie I enjoy as a guilty pleasure is "Amazon Women on the Moon" from 1987, while it has lots of problems as it doesn't really hang together, some of its bits are worth seeing.  There are many now-known stars and some great cameos, among them Forrest J. Ackerman and Russ Meyer.

Keith's was progressing so fast it would have been a pain, and expensive, to keep changing his glasses so he did the surgery earlier than later.

I'm wondering if there are schools of thought on portmanteaux in that there are some, like "Dead of Night", in which each story has its own director, and others, like "Black Sabbath", where there is only one director for the whole kit and kaboodle.  Is the multi-story, multi-director portmanteau a "truer" portmanteau than one that has only one director?

Picked up the framed art, which looks faboo (oobaf, spelled backwards), had a great lunch with friend Marshall Harvey and Henry Stanny, picked up a package (a Blu-ray of season one of House of Cards) and am now home and relaxing.  I think right now I'll watch Frozen, which I had no idea was The Snow Queen - almost FIVE years ago they were auditioning down the hall from me for a workshop of The Snow Queen, as if it was going to be a stage show.  Now we know why they had it and that it was for Frozen.  I've read a few things about this film, which I know was a huge hit with the same market as Wicked - tween girls - and it gives me some cause to feel I'm not going to love it.  They make the person who should be the villain, not a villain, but a misunderstood, unhappy girl - rather like - Elphaba in Wicked.  I remember a time when Disney movies had real villains - scary villains.

Bruce, you may have seen my earlier post whether the portmanteau movie crafted by multiple directors is a "truer" portmanteau as opposed to the single director version.  I'm thinking of "Dead of Night" or "Spirits of the Dead" vs. "Black Sabbath", etc.  Or, is my question moot or even (perish the thought) silly?

Yes, they do not want to scare the kiddies too much ("they can't handle it") and replace villains with moral equivalence, and in turn, schmaltzify and mushify the whole meaning of what was once a beautiful story that, once upon a time, had a real point to it.

Why is it not socially acceptable to eat a slice of cake for breakfast, but OK to eat, like, three donuts?       :)

Since when was it not socially acceptable to eat a slice of cake for breakfast?

it's social acceptable in my social circle, in fact, it is highly encouraged, particularly if you share

Andersen "The Snow Queen" is one of the most glorious and heartbreaking things ever written, and like "The Little Mermaid," Disney screwsit up.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother gave me "The Worlds Best Loved Fairy Tales" and one of them was the Snow Queen.  I haven't read it in years, but I remember I both loved it and it scared me.   Think I'll look for that book. I know I have it here somewhere, because I saw it not long ago

But I also forgot something occupied a lot of my time last year.....the Jodi Arias trial.

and I have officially given up coffee for Lent---

I generally drink 6 -10 cups a day  between the time I get up and the end of the work day..

I may have been too ambitious in my choice....

Is it possible to just cut that in half or forth?  I don't believe Lent is about causing physical problems.  You shouldn't ignore caffeine withdrawal.  IMHO it should be done slowly.

well I haven't given up  tea or coke or chocolate  :)

LOL, Drink a lot of tea, that will keep the caffine flowing

Yes, I am sure Frozen appeals to  Tweens  - it was also loved by  21  year old Vixter and  *ahem *  somewhat older moi... it appeals for the same reason Wicked does:  it has strong women central characters and while men are there as friends and helpmates, they are not there to rescue the helpless damsel in distress

I participated in two long Ash Wednesday services today. Perhaps I scored extra "brownie points."     :)

I wasn't sure what to do about the ashes. I hemmed and hawed, and finally decided to wash my forehead and start over for the evening service. I was please to note that the other people also participating in the evening service had made the same decision.

Now, here's the kind of review I like - even though the other one was a great review it wasn't well written and was what I call a list review and written by someone who is not really a reviewer or writer.  Here's one by someone who has actually been reviewing for a long time for various publications - the fact that it's a rave is icing, but the fact that it actually has some thought behind it is even better.

Title: Re: BLIMPIE
Post by: Dan M on March 05, 2014, 07:48:11 PM
The stronger the villain the better the tale.  If villains were all made to be "complicated" and "misunderstood" then we'd all be watching Dr. Phil or Oprah.  Those stories are all too much real life.  Kids, and adults, want to visit storylands whether in books or in movies, where it is clear who is good and who is bad.  Anything else is just documentary.  I'm not sure if I've explained accurately what I have rolling around in my mind.  Think of the "Star Wars" series, once you learn the connection between Annakin, Luke and Darth Vader, it changes the whole tenor of the tale.  It would be as if Ian Fleming gave a Freudian explanation for Blofeld's need to have a cat.

I didn't mention the other day that I finally fired my doctor.  I called about my holter monitor results and the nurse was very short with me indicating that they had sent me an email. When I told her that the email didn't explain the results, she said "Well it's normal"  I told her that isn't what the email says and I had lots of questions and no way to ask them.   I finally told her that if I need to go to Web MD to figure out what they send me means then why even have a doctor.   I finally told her that I just want my records.  That I really don't trust the office anymore and I want to go somewhere else.  She was actually pretty pleasant about it after that

So then I called a place that's really more of a teaching clinic.  It's all residents under the supervision of some docs.  I understand that but have heard good things about it.  I made it very clear that my problem with the last place I went to was communication and that they may have been very good, but I wouldn't know because they didn't communicate with me.   I scheduled a physical and plan to be very clear that I want things explained and not via email

It was so nice to finally get the guts to tell the old clinic what I thought.  I also told the nurse that her explanation of why I went in last time wasn't right and wasn't what I told her.  She got really quiet about that.   Anyway, it's done.  I have no problem complaining about things for other people, but I'm really not that good at doing it for myself

Not necessarily to make a pun, but here goes: I didn't gravitate to either movie.  I get a certain "spider-sense" about some movies and that usually only happened with Kubrick, or when I first saw all of Hitchcock's major films, or Welles.  Like it was appointment theater (or video store) going.  Now, I get that sense with Wes Anderson.  I'm looking forward to seeing "The Grand Budapest Hotel".
