Good morning, all.

Great news on the Sweeney being broadcast. I was watching the BBC tribute to Sondheim on his 80th birthday and Terfel sings a couple of numbers. He really looks crazy, almost like Frankenstein's monster. It's been my favorite part of what I've seen so far. That and Judi Dench singing "Send in the Clowns."

We finally watched 12 YEARS A SLAVE last night.

It is an excellent picture, but difficult to watch.

As good as it is though, I don't know if it will pass the test of time.

50 years from now, will viewers still want to see it, like today we still want to see other Best Pictures (e.g. GRAND HOTEL, GONE WITH THE WIND, CASABLANCA, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, ALL ABOUT EVE, ON THE WATERFRONT, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, etc.)?

The same goes for SCHINDLER'S LIST.

King Cakes are, apparently, different from bakery to bakery. I had a piece yesterday. It was like the Italian Christmas panettone with raisins, and no taste except for a very sweet (too much so) icing with sprinkles.

All the talk last week of "gluten free" foods made me curious to try "gluten free" bread, so I picked some up while grocery shopping over the weekend....I kind of like it. The taste, that is, not the price, however. $6.99 a loaf at Fred Meyer stores!!!

I did find some at Trader Joe's that was only $3.99 a loaf...still spendy, though.

I was intriuged by one of the other actors on that page, Damu King. Looked him up and he has been in a ton of stuff, so how did I ever not notice that name?

I presume his name is pronouced 'da'moo' and not 'dam u'

Back, with basically NO change in prescription, though we're going to try a different contact lens in one eye.

I'm definitely on the road to eventually needing the cataract surgery, but I've known that, and it should be a few years hence. Everyone I know who's had it has reported it to be effortless and loves the results, including my dad at nearly 80 years of age. But like a bottle of $2.99 Paul Masson, I won't do it before it's/its time.

And I found the Blimpie. This one isn't a standalone store; it's one of the featured foodstuffs in one of those more modern convenience stores at a large gas station. But I'll try it sometime.

I don't think I knew it in L.A. When I moved here, they seemed to be a NYC thing, but I never tried one because -- and maybe this was my experience with Subway -- the sub/hoagie/grinder type of sandwich at the large chains never seemed totally satisfactory to me. Like DR Ron said, the bread was often the weak point. I do think Subway has greatly improved in the last few years, and their breads are part of that improvement.

Since they're new to me, I wondered about that -- whether there's one way of making them or if it varies. I don't know who baked this one, whether it was the local store bakery where it was bought, or if it was brought in from somewhere. But it was definitely to my liking.

There are movies "of the moment" and movies that will live "forever".

Unfortunately, we don't get movies that will live forever every year.

I did not like the book Bid Time Return or the film Somewhere In Time; the time travel concept seemed to me too close t the concept of the wonderful Jack Finney novel Time and Again, which was published six years earlier.

The scratchy sound on Dead of Night has always been there on every video release and the 16mm print I owned - it's weird and it's very present on the Blu-ray a lot of the time.
