Well, you've read the notes, the notes mentioned Studio Ghibli, and now it is time for you to post until the anime cows come home.

And the word of the day is: FROWARD!

My dyslexic fingers often type the word this way when I mean the opposite of backward. Happens all the time.

I have never seen a Studio Ghibli film -- or any anime at all.

I have also never seen House of Cards.  But since Kevin Spacey is one of those who(m) I could listen to reading the proverbial phone book, and more and more people are talking about it, now including BK, I believe attention must be paid.

Oy.  I need more hours in the day.  Better yet, I think, a second life.  One isn't nearly enough.  Yes, that would be the ticket.  There needs to be two of me.

Good morning, all! I'm on my usual pattern of one night of lousy sleeping, a groggy day and then a good night's sleep, etc. God alone knows how this will be affected by the time change this weekend.  I hate it.    I will shortly run to the pharmacy to pick up my meds, then head to the market.  At some point I will be getting a phone call from the Man from Philadelphia, which could go on for too long since he loves to talk.

I know too much about Mr Spacey and his behavior to want to see him in anything. Still, The Ref is my favorite Christmas movie and he's quite good in it.

I am loving the reports on Li'l Abner and looking forward to more.

TOD - no time for viewing/listening this weekend, but I do have a media-related question.  How do I dispose of videotapes that we've recorded off-the-air?  When Rob was a kid he taped a lot of Star Trek episodes and has now given me the green light to dispose of them.  Commercial videotapes can be donated to the book sale (but we're finding that they don't sell well...), but these home-recorded ones can't be sold.  I hate to just put them in the trash, but I've read that recycling is expensive.  Thoughts?

I'm responsible for at least a few very large trash bags worth of VHS tapes sitting in the landfills today.

The stuff might be recyclable in some way, but even though I participate in normal recycling at home and consider myself a halfway decent citizen as regards such things, as soon as it becomes a challenge or a hassle or an expense....sorry, the sh stuff goes into the trash.

With regard to Animation:

I have yet to see FROZEN, but the truth is that I have tired of animated movies altogether.  There are just too many or them now.

And, I used to love animated features.

Back in the day, if we got 1 or 2 animated features a year, that was a lot.  And, more often than not, these movies were "special".

Now, it seems that we get, at least, one animated movie every month.  They are no longer "special".

I watched it later as well. I was surprised by a few things. I never think of Annie as a purely kids' musical. This is definitely just for kids, and a little too precious and self-consciously cute for my tastes. But I was also surprised at how good the star's singing voice was.

For anyone who's interested in trying anime, start with Kiki's Delivery Service - it's wonderful and has a brilliant score - BUT it must be watched in Japanese with English subtitles.  The dub completely subverts everything about the film, has additional music (heaven forbid there should be silence) and is appalling.

HOUSE OF CARDS does sound like a good show...and people at work have been trying to get me to watch DOWNTOWN ABBEY...and I have still not seen a single episode of MAD MEN.

There really are a lot of good quality shows airing, but, as DR ChasSmith mentioned, it is so hard to find the time to devote to all of them.

Of course, since SEAN SAVES THE WORLD...which was finally getting good, HAPPILY DIVORCED, and SOUTHLAND have all been cancelled, and I stopped watching CHICAGO FIRE, I do have room to add a few new series...on the other hand, the extra time not watching TV shows has helped me move further on getting some work done on my Bollywood book projects.

If I would get rid of television completely, I might also get some work done on interviews that have been sitting around for years now, waiting to be transcribed.

I agree what has been said about dubbed movies, although sometimes it's fun to hear at what lengths the producers go through to "match" the original actors' voices.  Has anyone seen Schwarzenegger's 1969 movie, "Hercules in New York"?  His part is hilariously dubbed and nothing like the sound of his actual voice.  If you've seen many foreign pictures from the 1960s and 1970s, you know that some of the same voice actors come up again and again.  I saw many a Japanese movie dubbed into English, in which it seemed like it was Paul Frees talking to Paul Frees talking to another Paul Frees.  I believe he was Toshiro Mifune's "official" English/American voice for a couple of films.

I always try to see the movie in its original form if possible and have learned to tolerate subtitles.  Even the TOHO Godzilla films play differently in the original Japanese.  On a related note, I also only listen to opera in the language it was originally written in.  Somehow it sounds better to me.

The missing Netflix discs and the failed shipment did ot show up today, so the asshole manager of the Planetarium Station will get a bad critique from me to the US Postal site.  I suspect the followup will be that i never receive another piece of mail in decent condition, but this situation is ridiculous.

So, I just sent this to USPS.com:
Our regular carrier is off with an injury, I believe, and the mail’s been a mess all week: I should have received two Netflix items on Wednesday and they have never shown up, yesterday there were tw items in my postbox, a catalogue for someone else and a delivery attempt notice.  Now, the wrong item makes me suspect my two Netflix items are sitting in another postbox or in another building, but I am most concerned about the delivery attempt of tracking number 95001214402140------79, according to the USPS.com site, 4:34pm. I was home, since i am currently crippled, and the postman never rang my apartment to notify me of a delivery!  When I discovered this around 5:30, since the post’s been arriving very late in the afternoon, I called the Planetarium Station and spoke to an unfriendly gentleman who said he was the manager. He was neither helpful nor interested in the situation, so i then went to USPS.com and requested a delivery of the package today.  Well, it never showed up. What the hell?

This is a review that might (mind you, I said "might") entice me to see this movie...well, maybe not, but it's a pretty funny review:

The 300 sequel is Zack Snyder's greatest intellectual masterpiece (http://io9.com/300-rise-of-an-empire-is-like-shakespeare-for-the-inte-1538992740).

I'm irritated because I do not like situations where the inmates are running the asylum. It's bad the post office manager is a fool, but some of the workers are worse. My carrier is a good guy, but while he's away, I'm suffering from fools.

I did sent a flat rate priority mail  package which was delivered today.  Those come with tracking numbers which I like.

The Postal Service lost a package that I was expecting last summer from Astoria, NY.  The tracking number would only show that it was delivered, but I never got it.  It wound up in Jersey City, NJ.  When I tracked down the manager in New Jersey, I was told that the USPS would place a tracer on the package.  The Post Office then blamed the shipper, but I already had credible information that it was the Post Office's fault.  Needless to say, the package was lost somewhere in New Jersey and the tracer did nothing.

The year before that, I had been expecting a package of vintage NY Metropolitan TV Guides to add to my collection.  There was several hundred dollars worth of TV Guides.  However, all the precautions taken by the shipper came to naught.  The package was delivered but was empty with USPS tape all over the box.  There was a Postal Inspector notice on the box stating something to the effect that while the USPS is very sorry that the package was damaged during shipment, it was pleased to complete the delivery!

I am sorry to say, but the only reliable tracking numbers are (always) FedEx and (98% of the time) UPS.  I've had items delivered to me successfully before the Postal Service even updated the tracking number information.  From my experience, I've learned that if it's late in the day, the package may be marked as delivered even though it may not show up until the next day.

About UPS having accurate tracking numbers, how the heck did two people get the same one!  Of course the number is only tracking the one that was actually delivered.  While they sent me, at the request of the business I ordered from, an updated email it does not tell me where my package is or exactly when I might expect it.

The business will re-send the items if they don't arrive.

When I was in high school we had a reading class where we leaned a speed reading technique.  Your eyes hit two spots on a line and you went down the page.   I could read very fast with really good comprehension, but it wasn't enjoyable.  You don't really read you sort of just absorb.

I finished the Fosse bio in the traffic this afternoon. Excellent detail of his movies and shows, both hits and misses.

I was especially interested in the author's discussion of "Star 80," a movie I've seen twice and respect, but it's so intense I had a hard time watching it. I find it even more fascinating after learning Fosse's thought process behind it, but the analysis also made me never want to see it again.

Sorry to read about all the delivery mishaps. We had terrible mail service when I lived in Virginia. I would get my neighbors' mail all the time--same number, different street. One year there was a big inspection at the regional postal center. THREE bills failed to arrive at all--and that's just from the mail I was expecting. God knows whatever else was missing. I think someone "cleaned up" the postal center. I tried phoning the post office, but received no satisfaction whatsoever. I was just told repeatedly that it wasn't the mail carrier's fault, which of course I'd never claimed. I was just trying to report the problems. A few months later I learned that our area was given a commendation for the best postal service in Virginia!!!
