Well, you've read the notes, the notes were on the path to pith, and now it is time for you to post until the pithy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MANDUCATE!
-
Topic of the Day:
1776
The Manchurian Candidate
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Today is a work day....oh well.
TOD:
The Manchurian Candidate - original
State of the Union
-
Does the Kevin Costner-Sean young version of NO WAY OUT actually count as political (mainly because of the epilogue, which turns the whole movie on its ear) if so, that's a real favorite film.
-
I've always liked that very light film KISSES FOR MY PRESIDENT with Polly bergen and Fred MacMurray.
And yes to the ones mentioned by others so far
-
Good morning, all! I was up early, and I will shortly head to Toyland. I'm working on a few projects and it's a good day to do just that. Yesterday, amid the Postal Office megillah, and various errands, I made a lot of vegetable soup, most of which is now frozen. It turned out very well.
I also got the edits of ROBERTA Act One with the spoken dialogue and vocals we recorded two weeks ago. I think the material sounds very good.
More coffee!
-
Good morning, all.
Woke up all back-ache-y, which instantly made me realize I hadn't had any of that in the past month or so. Go figure. Anyhoo...
Coffee!

TOD
MOVIES:
The Manchurian Candidate (original)
Seven Days in May
All the President's Men
um, what else? There's probably quite a few of them. But are they all really political movies, or "government thrillers"? I do love a good well made government thriller -- for lack of a better term.
TV SHOWS:
Ooff the top of my head I've never watched or stuck with a political series. That's not to say I wouldn't like one. I would probably have liked The West Wing, but never got into the habit of watching it.
-
What BK observes about TV series actors directing episodes of the show might be in evidence all the way back to X-FILES and SOPRANOS. I don't know if that's when the "fad" started, but those are where I was noticing it. But in those cases, whenever I thought an episode was weak, I probably blamed it on the writers. (Rightly or wrongly.)
-
Oh boy-- it's Saturday!!!
-
Yes, it's Saturday, and tonight we SPRING FORWARD!
And today I gots me a busy day of doing stuff around the house that needs doing, and running around elsewhere, so I'll probably be scarce till tonight. Have a good and productive day, everybody.
-
Good morning!
-
Just saw the Hollywood wives episode of I Love Lucy, which featured Sheila MacRae, who died yesterday.
-
Saturday morning greetings! Day 3 of the book sale and I'm scheduled to work 3-6pm. We feel we're somewhat behind last year, money-wise, but hopes are still high.
-
"The Path to Pith"... I love it! :)

TOD:
ALL THE KING'S MEN (original)
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
DAVE
SEVEN DAYS IN MAY
THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT
MY FELLOW AMERICANS
and, of course:
HAIL ON THE CHIEF!
:)
-
TOD:
Call me a sappy sentimentalist, but I like films that don't take politics too seriously, like DAVE and THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT. They're not "art," but I find them enjoyable.
I've enjoyed the few episodes of THE WEST WING that I've seen. And that newer cable show with Sigourney Weaver, POLITICAL ANIMALS.
1776, of course. And I guess EVITA could be considered a political show, in a way.
-
Does THE LION IN WINTER count? :) Court politics.
-
Greetings from Toyland!
-
Does the UK version of HOUSE OF CARDS follow the same story or just the same main character?
-
Re: The TOD
There was a tv show on last year that I really enjoyed called Political Animals with Sigourney Weaver.
-
Good morning, all.
Off to a lunch at one of the wineries in the Hill Country today, then the symphony tonight. All in the rain, from the looks of things.
-
lunch at one of the wineries
Do they have food, too? :)
-
TOD:
The Lives of Others
1984
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
The original Manchurian Candidate
Duck Soup
-
lunch at one of the wineries
Do they have food, too? :)
It's not just a liquid lunch, no. And since I have to drive in the rain, I can't enjoy too much.
-
TOD:
Advise and Consent
The American President
Hyde Park on Hudson
John Adams (HBO series)
-
More TOD:
Cradle Will Rock
Quiz Show
-
I'm up, barely, and awaiting the arrival of she of the Evil Eye.
-
Good Morning all:
TOD;
BOOK;
LES MIS, (ALSO THE PLAY) (However I do think that the SPIRITUAL SIDE OVERSHADOWS THE POLITICAL)
TV SHOWS:
Many of Rod Serling's TWILIGHT ZONE episodes were very political. Such as the following:
THE SHELTER
THE OBSOLETE MAN
NUMBER 12 LOOKS JUST LIKE YOU
FILMS:
BRAVE NEW WORLD (ALSO BOOK)
LORD OF THE FLYS (ALSO BOOK)
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (LOVE MY JIMMY STEWART)
-
Just a reminder to all our DR"S that MARTY is on TONIGHT TCM 8:00PM EST.
-
Goodbye for now!!!
-
From DR Cilla:
Of course it could be true, too. That's always a possibility
LOL, it is hard to believe there are two packages with the same tracking number.
-
DR George we also watch ALMOST HUMAN. Is anyone else watching this show?
-
She of the Evil Eye is here (earlier and earlier it seems) and I may delay the barbecue adventure until tomorrow - we shall see.
-
From DR Vixmom:
:-*
And back to you. Bruce does offer an excellent suggestion for Holloween and then he can really see DR Vixter in the goth look ;)
-
DR Jeanne:
Sorry to read about all the delivery mishaps. We had terrible mail service when I lived in Virginia. I would get my neighbors' mail all the time--same number, different street. One year there was a big inspection at the regional postal center. THREE bills failed to arrive at all--and that's just from the mail I was expecting. God knows whatever else was missing. I think someone "cleaned up" the postal center. I tried phoning the post office, but received no satisfaction whatsoever. I was just told repeatedly that it wasn't the mail carrier's fault, which of course I'd never claimed. I was just trying to report the problems. A few months later I learned that our area was given a commendation for the best postal service in Virginia!!!
Remind me not to move to Virginia if that is the best post office ;)
We always check our mail to be sure it is ours, as I'm pretty sure our neighbors do. Our nice mailman was terrible about putting the wrong mail in the boxes for his first couple of years. He has greatly improved with time. But at least he is nice.
Several months ago we received our neighbors AARP magazine and dropped it into her box. Later she called laughing that she had given me hers instead of mine. I told her to keep them both.
-
Yes, it's Saturday, and tonight we SPRING FORWARD!
Before getting out of bed this morning I set the travel clock I keep next to my bed. I have already set the quest room clock as well. We really don't look at those during the day.
-
Just saw the Hollywood wives episode of I Love Lucy, which featured Sheila MacRae, who died yesterday.
I did not know that. I hope her last years were good.
-
Keith saw Gordon & Sheila MacRae perform in Vegas. He said she was very pretty.
-
Saturday morning greetings! Day 3 of the book sale and I'm scheduled to work 3-6pm. We feel we're somewhat behind last year, money-wise, but hopes are still high.
Vibes you match the money raised last year!
-
Thanks, DR Jane, but we set our expectations a little lower this year because of our move back downtown.
-
DR TCB - I do not know where the Drescher photo came from originally. I just swiped it from Facebook.
-
Happy Saturday, all!
Manducate, huh? Sounds like the act of teaching men things that women already know. :D
BK, do you own a pithy helmet?
Oh my political themed things - sooo many good ones.
First that come to mind are the series THE NEWSROOM and THE WEST WING, and the film ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN.
No doubt I'll think of tons more as I wake up more. :P
-
I just had a loverly visit from DR Ben and Anthony, who dropped off a CD and visited for a bit. It was nice to see them, gossip a bit, and catch up.
I will pack up Toyland and head for home.
-
TOD (in no particular order)
The American President
All the President's Men
Dave
Primary Colors
The Manchurian Candidate (original)
Frost/Nixon
The Candidate
Wag the Dog

Good morning
-
TOD - I must say, the only political show I've ever been interested in is House of Cards. I'm almost done with Season 2. Sometimes when I watch this, I wish I had paid more attention to my government classes in school. I still find it riveting and exciting, though.
-
In addition to the movies and TV shows mentioned earlier, I would add:
NOTORIOUS (Hitchcock and Narzis, as Churchill pronounced the word according to Mel Brooks)
"BACK THERE" (Twilight Zone episode where Russell Johnson goes back in time to try to stop the assassination of Lincoln)
EXECUTIVE ACTION (Way before Oliver Stone's "JFK")
JFK (Love to see Joe Pesci as David Ferrie!)
NIXON (Love to see the scenery chewing)
SECRET HONOR (Great acting by Philip Baker Hall as Nixon, later Lt. Bookman on "Seinfeld")
THE IPCRESS FILE (More conspiracy with a British version of MK-ULTRA and Michael Caine)
FUNERAL IN BERLIN (More Michael Caine)
MARATHON MAN (Olivier as a Nazi dentist, "Is it safe?" and no novocaine for Dustin Hoffman)
THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL (Olivier as a Simon Wiesenthal Nazi hunter)
NETWORK (Faye Dunaway as a TV news producer trying to get inside a Patty Hearst-style terror group)
THE PARALLAX VIEW (Warren Beatty peels away the political conspiracy onion and doesn't like what he finds)
REDS (Warren Beatty! Nicholson is extremely good as Eugene O'Neill)
ANIMAL FARM (Animated, yes, but still scary)
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (The Old West filtered through the politics of 1960s Italy)
OUR MAN IN HAVANA (Both the book by Greene and the movie with Alec Guinness, satirical thriller)
JULIUS CAESAR (The Mankiewicz version with Marlo Brandon [that's the way my mom said it, so I'm sticking with it])
WR: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM (Wilhelm Reich!)
THE PRIVATE FILES OF J. EDGAR HOOVER (Fun Larry Cohen TV movie with Broderick Crawford as Hoover bulldozing!)
-
Cat Lady Barbie:

My oh my, just look at all those great political thrillers I didn't think of!
And hey, someone besides me who knows about and remembers EXECUTIVE ACTION? It opened at the Chinese, and being quite the JFK assassination nerd back then, I went to it a few times. I was recently surprised and delighted to find, among my roadshow movie programs, that I had a newspaper-style program from that, which I'd completely forgotten about: eight pages (on newsprint) of facts and photographs about the event and the theories and the film.

Yes, exactly! Good ol' Burt Lancaster!

TOD continued
TV Shows
House of Cards - both the British and the American Versions
The West Wing
Yes, Minister
Yes, Prime Minister
-
Back from satisfying my barbecue craving - had a brisket sandwich - great. No fries, just a little thing of the baked beans.
-
No packages today.
-
And I am home!
I will put a few things away and chill. I have already moved my clocks forward an hour. Except for the VCR and I will do that now.
-
Who seriously does not like a good Cole Porter score??

LOVE!!!
-
I am so sick of politics that I don't even want to think about political shows. Thinking about politics makes me want to vomit on the ground.
-
But if I have to, today I'll say DAVE.
-
The cat lady is 23 cats over our local ordinance. We have a stupid ordinance that says you can only have 2 pets of the same species without a special permit. So you can have 2 cats and 2 dogs and 2 rabbits and 2 snakes and 2 gerbils and 2 birds....and so on, but you can't legally have 3 cats or 3 dogs.
-
You can have more than 2 fish. You don't have to license them
-
We have a big book sale like the one Ginny is talking about. You can also donate records, tapes, vcrs and dvds and they sell them at the book sale. All proceeds go to friends of the library
-
http://www.booksalefinder.com/
The "big" ones I usually get to around here are Newtown (Booth Library), Redding (Mark Twain Library), Westport Library, Southport (Pequot Library), and then there's my local Danbury one which is smaller. I might try to branch out this summer, take in some others around the region.

oh no I should never have clicked that link
-
oh... and The Newsroom
-
I would kill for that barbecue brisket right about now.
There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- like the Texas version of that -- even the ones I've had in the Dallas area, which probably don't hold a candle to the stuff DR John G. knows.

Cat Lady Barbie:
This is truly an insult to cat ladies.
-
In addition to the movies and TV shows mentioned earlier, I would add:
THE IPCRESS FILE (More conspiracy with a British version of MK-ULTRA and Michael Caine)
I have always loved THE IPCRESS FILE though I think of it more as a spy film vs political. I find it interesting how you categorized it.

DR TCB, re: that picture of Fran Drescher. Did you mean where is she playing in Cinderella? If so I think that she is currently playing the Stepmother on Broadway.
-
DR Jane, I started the Lisa Gardner book today. Some of my goodreads friends who have already read it say it is one of her best.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Only 3 dogs are permitted in Ashland. I can't find anything about multiple types of pets but apparently a total of 4 dogs and/or cats is considered a kennel which needs a special licence. I think people are fine as long as their neighbors don't report them, which did happen to a women with 4 dogs.
-

Oh good :) I am getting close. My library has 5 copies and I'm 5th in the queue.

DR Jennifer, re the US vs UK HOUSE OF CARDS:
the story is BASICALLY the same, ie, ruthless and ambitious politician is climbing the ladder, "assisted" by a young female reporter and also his "understanding" wife. But the two are very different. The US vs UK venues dictate many changes, plus the characters are quite different. Kevin Spacey and Ian Richardson play the leads with subtle but significant slants. I would not say that if you've seen one there's no point to seeing the other. Quite the contrary, I find the two takes very interesting.
Vixmom may wish to chime in here, as I know she's seen them both.
-
But Cilla has two female cats and one male cat. So where's the problem? ;)
-
DR TCB, re: that picture of Fran Drescher. Did you mean where is she playing in Cinderella? If so I think that she is currently playing the Stepmother on Broadway.
I think she would be good as the stepmother.
-
TOD:
The UK HOUSE OF CARDS was long my favorite political drama, but last year I saw the BBC's THE HOUR, which I loved. It's now a contender for first place.
-
Re Daylight Savings Time, I don't mind putting my clocks back in the fall and gaining an hour, but I really hate having to "spring forward." I always think, "I NEED THAT HOUR!!"

I think I need to rustle me up some lunch. One thing I'm sure: it won't be brisket.
-
TTFN.
-
I just finished reading "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity". Talk about government corruption :(

Infinitely better than two cats and a hoarder.

No one pays much attention. Many people have more than the ordinance allows. Most likely it would be a fine, but I've never really heard of it enforced - well maybe they used it for a local animal hoarder, but I think there were literally over 100 cats there. The most important thing is to have your pets vaccinated as required, and I can prove I've done that

Good afternoon. Wae-Ling and I hiked for hours today. When we got back we discovered that Mae-Ling had a bike accident and was at the ER.

I hope the man in Thailand called his mother to tell her his passport was stolen and he was not on the missing plane called before she received official news.
I remember well the day Keith called to tell me he wasn't on the plane that had crashed. I fortunately was oblivious to the fact the plane crashed or the possibility that Keith might have been on it. It wasn't long after that I began to keep an itinerary of his travels on the refrigerator.
-
I've been listening to the cast recording of Michael Valenti's glorious revue "Lovesong." I wish all 26 numbers had been recorded. I want to hear all of it!. Anthony converted the LP to mp3 files and I've filled it in with two additional tracks from the curious CD release.
PBS is on a fund raiser (Yes, Virginia, another goddam one!) which I swear they have at every whim, so I'm missing tonight's Britcoms. Maybe I'll watch some Midsomer Murders.
-

Hello, it is quiet here this evening.

The temperature was 61 when I was watching the news earlier. Quite a change from the teens of the other morning!

Poor Mae-Ling.... Hope she heals quickly, and without too much discomfort.

Back from a nice Thai restaurant.

Sounds good DR Singdaw

On the final episode of season one of House of Cards - but I'll finish it after my dinner meeting. I've already had poached eggs on an English muffin and bacon, and the brisket sandwich. I shouldn't really be eating anything else, but I suppose I might have a BLT-A or something light like that - or just a dinner salad.

This is DD Zach's photo from his vet visit yesterday. He is getting to be quite a senior citizen - almost 14!! Still acts like a puppy, though. He has a few problems, but they said his blood work was perfect - like a dog half his age.

Great Photo of DD Zach.

Today I did the laundry, including the blankets and the mattress pad. And I flipped the mattress over. I'm hoping it will be firmer on this side.

Re Daylight Savings Time, I don't mind putting my clocks back in the fall and gaining an hour, but I really hate having to "spring forward." I always think, "I NEED THAT HOUR!!"
Tell me about it! :P A friend in high school (when Daylight Saving Time took less of the year and "real" time was more of the year) said that he wouldn't change his clocks for the "real time" portion of the year. He stayed on Daylight Saving Time for his going to bed and waking up times and never had to deal with the change-over. Since "real time" is now only about 4 1/2 months out of the year, I keep thinking that that would be a very good idea and should be pretty easy to do. We'll see if I even remember this in November.
;)

Finished with season one of House of Cards - for some reason I thought it was twelve episodes, but it was, in fact, thirteen.
