I am stunned -- STUNNED, I tell you -- at BK's report of BYE BYE BIRDIE.

Stunned, that they could even get away with presenting the music in the way they did.  Can permission actually be obtained for using MOVIE tracks, and including the title song?  I was under the impression that was verboten.  And how did they come up with the tracks?  Could those have been Twilight Time's isolated tracks?  Was this just possibly some grand experiment that came with Tams-Witmark's full knowledge and approval?

But who would dream this sh stuff up in the first place?  And why?  And we're talking Burbank, not some community group in the middle of nowhere.  And who in the heart of the great metropolis that is L.A. would not employ a few live musicians?  Or Ethel Toffelmier on the piano?

And the scene changes.  Oy, Oy, Oy.

Good morning, all! I did not want to get out of bed this morning, so I'm either really really tired ot really really depressed. Either way, it's not good.

Last night I watched 20 Feet From Stardom which was quite wonderful and at times heartbreaking.

I have to make the bed, have some more coffee, and tidy up this place. Then I'll ponder my weekend. I have to get to Toyland and accomplish some  things, so I'm going tomorrow, I guess.

Did you read the novel, "March," which won the Pulitzer a few years ago. It was about the father and what happened to him during the Civil War. Supposedly a wonderful book.

While I like the author of "March" I was not going to read it as I take great objection to authors stealing characters from other books and making them their own.

I had to read "March" for my book group discussion and felt this was truly written to generate interest from the original books.  Had the book not been about Mr. March I am sure I would have thought more of it.  The man in this book was not the man I imagined the father of the wonderful March family.

To be clear on the tracks for Birdie - they used the original cast album for the overture - not sure where the entr'acte came from, maybe the revival cast album.  Then the rest of the tracks seemed to be synth Karaoke tracks, that's my guess.  And whoever prepared those for the Karaoke disc used to movie arrangements clearly.

Got it.

I think I have seen only one show performed to a prerecorded track -- a JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR about 15 years ago.  Memory has it that that seemed to flow pretty well, but who knows.  Oh, and a high school ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and that was pretty blah.

Songs
THOSE WERE THE DAYS (Gee, our old LaSalle ran great!; especially the way Jean Stapleton purposely mangled those notes.  As an "All in the Family" addict, how can I not love this song as it perfectly melds with the show and is so iconic.  When I became aware of who wrote the title song for my favorite show, boy was I impressed that a real Broadway team did that for TV of all things!)
N.Y.C. (I saw "Annie" during its first run on Broadway and this was the kicker for me, as the whole production came alive on stage and the song is so catchy.  There are many others from the score that are excellent.  Unfortunately, "Tomorrow" was used one too many times in school in various guises during concerts, that I became inured to the sentiment of the song.  I can no longer hear the song without thinking of the many bad versions and parodies I've heard.  Maybe I will come around and hear it anew someday soon, maybe tomorrow . . .)
ONCE UPON A TIME (I got to know this song via Sinatra and like his version.)
PUT ON A HAPPY FACE (I remember being very little and sitting on my Dad's shoulders watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in person.  Dick Van Dyke was on a float singing this song.  I didn't know the lyrics then, but I always recognized and hummed the melody.)
KIDS (In elementary school, I was in the school chorus every year.  One year we sang this song and we devised "actions" to go along with the lyrics, instead of just standing still while singing.  We liked that one a lot . . . . cheep, cheep, cheep.)
and
The scores for "There Was A Crooked Man" and "The Night They Raided Minsky's"

Did you read the novel, "March," which won the Pulitzer a few years ago. It was about the father and what happened to him during the Civil War. Supposedly a wonderful book.

While I like the author of "March" I was not going to read it as I take great objection to authors stealing characters from other books and making them their own.

How could you sit through "Wicked?"

Why would anyone want to sit through "Wicked"? It just opened here for a three-week run and everybody's flocking to it. Ugh. (But I agree with the basis of your question.)

we loved Wicked - it works for teenager girls and those that once were teenage girls  :)

You know, I guess I passed my teenage girl years without even realizing it. :)

For me, the only thing that can control and eventually wipe out that post-cold cough (which can go on for WEEKS if you let the hacking get to the stage where it's a habit) is Robitussin DM.  Couple of hits a day, and of course enjoy some lozenges whenever!  :)

I just spent a wonderful two hours revisiting and reacquainting myself with LI'L ABNER, via the film.  A true delight.  Tomorrow I shall get out the score and recordings to solidify this LI'L reunion with one of my earliest favorite shows.

MUCH!  I read the book before the musical came out which is why I didn't buy tickets when I could have gotten them  cheap in previews--- it wasn't until former DR William F Orr gifted the Vixter with the OBC recording  (Christmas?  her birthday?) that we took any interest in the show -- we went to see it the day before the Republican Convention started in NYC - the original principals were  still in the show except for Joel Grey  and we LOVED it

It was a beautiful day out today -  after I got home from the soup kitchen  Vixdad took me to the IHOP for lunch - I had one of their new  crepes, chicken, bacon, onions, white cheddar and I had them substitute mushrooms for the tomatoes

I only had a half order and it was too much ---   it was good but not as good as the chicken crepe with spinach and hollandaise sauce
