Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both Ritt Large and Writ Large, and now it is time for you to post until the writ large cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: HEREDITAMENT!
-
From yesterday:
Thanks Jennifer, Jane, Fred, Mike and Vixmom. I had a little coughing fit, but I bought some Halls from concessions, which helped.
And ChasSmith, I'll look for the Robitussin DM. I didn't get to the store to get some Ricola.
-
Last night, I ushered for Harmony Sweepstakes, an a cappella contest. The winning group goes onto the nationals in San Rafael, California in May. Most of the groups were pretty good...only a couple were obviously not as experienced as the rest, but they didn't embarrass themselves.
-
I do have to say that I was surprised at the winners. They won the big three: best group, audience favorite AND best original arrangement. I didn't feel that they were the best group, either by performance or energy. Oh, well. That's horseracing.
-
Today, I get to sleep in (and I will). I'll watch some TV. Tonight, I'm working concessions for the Olympia Symphony Orchestra.
I'll bring my Kindle to read in the lobby during the show. ;)
-
And now, to bed. 8)

Happy Birthday to bk's Darling Daughter!

-
Good morning, all.
It is a Sunday, but not a day of rest for the likes of me. No sir. It is a day of getting things done.
But first, some coffee and ketchuping.
-
Very happy birthday wishes to the Darling Daughter!
-
Good morning!
-
Good morning, all.
Happy birthday to the Darling Daughter!
-
I enjoyed the clip of Harold Lang, BK!
-
That Harold Lang video is a wonder.
-
Happy Birthday to your Darling Daughter, BK!
-
Here we go again. We have a winter storm warning for tonight and tomorrow. 3-6 inches of snow expected in the immediate metro area and more outside. Very unusual for March!
-
I'm glad I took a chance and ordered CONRACK, because I didn't even remember knowing about it back in the day and the name meant nothing to me.
-
The amazing thing about this late winter storm, which I assure you NOBODY needs, is that they've cancelled it for us up here.
Yay!!!!!
Sorry, DR KevinH. :)
-
Sunday morning greetings! Today is a Sunday-off-from-Lima for Fr. Richard, so we're going to church with Rob and Mary Linda. We will definitely be home by 3pm to see Michigan and Michigan State in the final basketball game of the Big Ten tournament - Go, Blue!
-
Happiest of birthdays to BK's Darling Daughter!
-
Good morning, all! I'm off to Toyland and running late. I'll check in from there.

It's supposed to stay south of us, but we may have some snow showers this evening. Stay safe and warm, DR KevinH!

we may have some snow showers this evening.
Same here.

yes, a Happy Birthday to BK"S Darling Daughter!!!

Excellent! (54 Below is doing APPLAUSE in April, by the way.)
That "firm as Gibraltar and shaky as Jello" bit is such a perfect coming together of music, lyric, moment, star, direction - and on top of that the costume too, or at least it seems so in that clip.
-
Feel better vibes for DR George!
-
Happy Purim, to those who celebrate the Jewish holidays.
(This is the holiday about Queen Esther.)

Page 2???

Yes, page 2!

And it's not even 10 a.m. yet EST.

If you have CVS there, their store brand is called Tussin DM and is WAY cheaper than the name brand. I'd imagine the other big chains have their own, too.
I'm not a fanatic about store brands of everything, but when it comes to, well, "DRUGS", I always check and compare and it's nearly always totally worth going with them.

It's so funny about a name like Martin Ritt. A few months ago you could have said "Martin Ritt" and I would have said, "oh yeah, of course, Martin Ritt, he's, uh, he did...let me think...okay, I forget, remind me what he did, exactly?"
All the years I've loved THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, I could not have told you who directed it. I'm sure I would have started to name somebody, then hesitated and finally realized I was mystified. If I did name the wrong person, I wonder who that would have been.
Thanks to Twilight Time, it was wonderful getting to know THE SOUND AND THE FURY, then revisiting THE LONG HOT SUMMER, a couple of years back. And I'm sure I paid attention to who the director was, but did the name stick, even that recently? Did I make any connections at all with the other films? When I watched THE FRONT, I again recognized his name and reviewed his filmography, but these movies, as wonderful as they all are, did not form in my mind a single unified impression of directorship. Is directorship a word?
Never saw PETE 'n' TILLIE. Never saw NORMA RAE. Never saw SOUNDER. Saw HUD, but that was at least a thousand years ago. Not doing too well here, am I?
Ah, enlightenment. Bring it on, baby.
-
I have never heard the term "New England boiled dinner" before. But when I googled it there were indeed a lot of pictures.
-
Happiest of Birthdays to the Darling Daughter of MR BK.
I, too, enjoyed the Harold Lang clip. I have read many things about him....but I had never seen him dance.
-
At 11:30am I am going to see my niece's swim meet. It is at my winter pool (only 5 minutes away). So that part (and that i am familiar with the pool) is good.
-
Happy Birthday to BK's daughter!

I never heard of "New England Boiled Dinner" to mean what I have always known as "Corned Beef and Cabbage." Or did I misread something?
I would have thought you were talking about a clambake or some such.

Last night's dream, for your Sunday morning reading pleasure:
I was vacuuming this very dirty area of something or other (a floor? table? countertop?), and among the debris was this tiny but ugly little spider. I got him. But there he was again. He wouldn't stay vacuumed. As I made repeated attempts to overcome him with the suction, holding the brush attachment over him, each time he reappeared he grew in size a little. After many attempts he suddenly became this large (maybe four inches long?) object, fortunately not exactly a spider now, but still something to get rid of. I sort of secured it in place (it wasn't moving around much) and went to get [something] that would enable me to get rid of it once and for all.

That sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday!

Really enjoy Harold Lang on the original Kiss Me, Kate as well as his Pal Joey and Make a Wish recordings. Notorious stories about him from Arthur Laurents and more.
-
And I am home. This is one of those days where the cons outweigh the pros of living in Manhattan and I am quite livid at the moment. I could not get to Toyland without a subway this morning. Since i care as much for the New York Marathon as I do for a non-anaesthetic hemorrhoidectomy, I have no idea what the fat hell a "half marathon" is or why the City allows it to fuck up public transportation and tell no one. As a consequence, I waited at Columbus Circle for nearly an hour wondering why no buses showed up. Finally, a kind policeman whose second language was an indecipherable broken English informed me that a lot of streets were closed off for this cockamamie marathon and, clearly, no M20 or M7 buses were taking me anywhere. I got into a taxi and came home. Thank you, Manhattan. And fuck you.
-
I hope you are feeling better today, DR George.

Actor Wayne Knight is dead. This is so sad.

-
From DR Cilla:
The book is much darker than the musical
I remember your saying that right after I saw and was glad I never read the book.
-
I also like a lot of Martin Ritt's movies, particularly THE FRONT, NORMA RAE, HOMBRE, HUD and MURPHY'S ROMANCE.
I recall visiting the set of THE MOLLY MAGUIRES. Art Lund was a publicity client.

From DR Singdaw:
This is a most novel way to pull out a child's loose tooth. AND why mothers should always be reticent when leaving the kids alone with dad.

Clever. I love the kids expressions. He even got the tooth back to put under his pillow ;D

I'm not sure I'm getting Lady Gaga's theory of "don't sell out" but use corporate sponsorships to "sell in."
She seems to be saying that it's possible to take corporate money for helping to create art, but if that corporate money allows the artists to express themselves, that's "selling in" not selling out.
if I'm interpreting this correctly:

Wouldn't it be ironic justice if the Westboro Baptist "Church" picketed his funeral? :)

The HAP-HAP-HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS to BK's Dear Daughter! Don't forget the tap-tap-tapioca! And dance the cari-cari-carioca! And have a big mug of mo-mo-mocha!

I've always heard corned beef and cabbage called corned beef and cabbage. Probably depends on where you live.
-
Here when a bus is not running they post a sign on top of the bus stop. It seems only fair.

I think it is regional. In NY, we always called it the day to open the windows. ;)

The picture of the "accident" is from a real accident that happened in 2009 (http://salem-news.com/articles/november012009/crash_mbz.php). :-\
His IMDb bio (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001431/bio) has been changed to say he died.

No, I didn't say my wife died.

Where is everyone?
-
Not that George, John, and Dan aren't everyone.
-
Can Maylasia Flight 370 get any more mysterious?
-
ABC News Aviation expert, and old friend of mine, John Nance said last night that someone in the cockpit could have depressureized the cabin and after twenty minutes the masks run out of oxygen. That way he could have killed everyone else so that he wouldn't have to worry about them storming the cockpit. What a cheerful thought that is.

I know what you mean. The marathon here traps me at home for the day. The road that exits our subdivision is closed so the runners can run on it.

I have had a very busy week. Wae-Ling and I hiked every day. I am tired.
-
Hi TCB,
The wifi here is problematic too. I depend on the kindness of strangers (the main office) to produce a strong enough signal for my computer to pick up. Some days, if it's windy, I can't get a signal that is consistent. I don't have the fast connection I would rather have, but at the current price, I guess I shouldn't complain.

I didn't notice it earlier today. I first read about the possibility of a hoax at the very bottom of the link DR elmore shared instead of near the top where it belongs.

Busy but fun :)
I bet her sister wishes she had gone hiking with you instead of riding her bike. Did you ever find out how she had such a bad crash?
-
I know this is a dumb question.
If you have an Android tablet, do you also have to have a WiFi internet connection to use it, or is it built in to the browser?
-
I would like to hear Kaye Ballard's story about Harold Lang.
-
On Saturday, I forgot to mention the songs from THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINSKY'S - which I was very happy to receive on its Kritzerland release - along with GAILY, GAILY.
-
She swerved to miss another bike rider coming out of a tunnel.
-
Feel better vibes for DR George!
I hope you are feeling better today, DR George.
Thanks, Kevin and Larry!! I am!
Good to read that.

That's one I missed out on. My pre-Kritzerland era, conincidentally enough that it is abbreviated B.K. Maybe not a coinkydink.

I can understand that. I'm sure Wae-Ling appreciates it, too.

Yes, continued good health vibes to you DR George.
I was going to recommend a cough syrup called Buckley's that I used to find all over NYC, but apparently is now hard to find in the US for a reasonable price. It did taste awful (pine needle oil, I think) but it sure did work better than anything else except for Delsym.

We enjoyed visiting Rob and Mary Linda's church and then taking them out for lunch. Made a quick stop at Mom's to drop off a prescription and a St. Patrick's Day cupcake and got home in plenty of time for the basketball game. MSU trounced Michigan, but there's always March Madness - Go, Blue!
-
And now, I'm off. I was just going to stay home before I had to work concessions later this afternoon, but my sister called, asking if I would help move a curio cabinet. So, I have to help move a curio cabinet. But first, I'll take a shower, then get dressed, then leave to help her.
Be back later!

Had a great time listening to the original cast album of LI'L ABNER today. I put it on the Big Speakers and cranked it up. Beautiful. Still a favorite album. Played the CD with the extras on it like the "Sadie Hawkins Day Ballet", the inclusion of which is nothing short of a miracle. Why, oh why (oh why oh) couldn't so much more Broadway orchestral work have been preserved over the years? The stuff would never have fit on LPs, but how wonderful it would be if they'd at least taped these things for posterity and they could be issued now.
-
Anyhoo, I'm sufficiently reconnected with the show to appreciate whatever BK posts about the LACC production in the coming weeks.
Now, to reconnect with MOST HAPPY FELLA -- and get my arse back to learning HAIRSPRAY and AVENUE Q.

church, coffee hour
-
stopped by the house to pick up my laptop before heading over to see Tally at the nursing home
-
pulled into my driveway just as two Jehovah witnesses were walking up my path
-
they said they were there to discuss the Bible with my daughter, and they called her by name, much to my suprsie
-
also to my surprise
-
told them she was at work and I was only my way to a nursing home visit and gently goodbyed them --
-
had a lovely visit with Tally-- for once I had a good idea - the laptop was a huge help
-
DR Vixter might have talked to them on a previous visit.
-
When I arrived I found her she was lying in bed(fully clothed) with her nieces by her side vainly trying to persuade her to get up and go to the library
-
happy birthday to bk darling daughter
-
caught on on some of my favorite flix today
the thomas crownr affair (original)
buckaroo bonzai
-
I came in and said oh I am so disappointed I wanted to show you pictures on my computer but I need a big table -to set up but maybe another time...
she was out of bed and in her chair ready to do to the library right away

just discovered a new cable channel called El Rey (The King)
It was started by director Robert Rodriguez. They do an original series of Dusk To Dawn based on the movies
"The network distributes reality, scripted, and animated series, movies, documentaries, news, music, comedy and sports programming.[4] Comcast has stated that the network "...prominently feature Hispanic producers, celebrities and public figures..."[6] The network targets second and third-generation Latinos who are often bilingual but speak English as their primary language.[7] The network hopes to succeed at a higher level than prior attempts to service the same demographic because of the commitment from Comcast"

We had errands to do today so we went into town for brunch. Once of the errands was returning the "personal" (as in second bag/purse/briefcase) carry-on bag Keith recently purchased. It turns out with United's new regulations the bag is too big. With the newer stricter regulations the roll on bag I have been using for years may be deemed a couple of inches too big.
Since our last trip and learning many countries weigh the carry-on bags we expected to eventually need something new but now isn't the time to get it.
I also also learned that luggage companies list the dimensions of the bag excluding the wheels to the handle which the airlines include.
-
her nieces were delighted and we all visited for an hour an a half while I showed her pictures of church events from the past year

I hope the nieces can put together something for future visits now that they know the secret to getting her up. I fortunately have always had a dog with me when I went to nursing homes.

then I came home and Vixdad and I went out to have a late lunch/early dinner at the Texas Roadhouse
-
Vixdad had the fish and chips with chili and I had the 6 oz sirloin with broiled mushrooms, with baked potato and salad. I must say we have never had a bad meal there and it is very reasonable

auugh I hope this doesn't meant the rolling carry-ons that the Vixfamily has been using are no longer compatible
since we always have two connections, sometimes rather tight ones, we have been avoiding checking bags when we go to Canada by only using carryons

One niece did pull me aside and say that he doesn't understand why she is always cooperative with me .. I told her I have an advantage - I'm not family - I don't have to visit her - so she doesn't argue with me because I might stop visiting :)

I don't think they allow animals (other than service animals) at the rehab, not that I have one to bring with me even if they did allow it
-
You know, it's amazing how wonderful and inviting a name like "Texas Roadhouse" sounds when you're sitting here hungry and wishing there was something in the house you really wanted to eat.
-
pulled into my driveway just as two Jehovah witnesses were walking up my path
No offense intended, but I heard a very funny joke involving JWs:
What do you get when you cross a Jehovah's Witness with a Unitarian?
A person who will knock at your door for no apparent reason.
-
To celebrate St Patrick's Day tomorrow, i listened to my recording of Victor Herbert's EILEEN, and then I watched Darby O'Gill and the Little People, which has some really frightening moments. I don't think I'd seen it in 20 years. I probably watched in last around 1988 or so, when I got my first VCR. I probably saw it 2 or 3 times in the theatre in 1959; it was one of my favorite movies, and I think it holds up. Albert Sharpe was the original Finian of FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and there's a lot of that character in Darby O'Gill, from the blarney and swagger to the grief when his daughter nearly dies; in FINIAN, it's burning Sharon at the stake, and in DARBY, it's death by pooka.
I will probably have banshee nightmare tonight.
-
Some great viewing and listening ideas there, DR Elmore.
I haven't seen Darby O'Gill since I was a kid. That might just be the ticket.
One of the tickets.

auugh I hope this doesn't meant the rolling carry-ons that the Vixfamily has been using are no longer compatible
since we always have two connections, sometimes rather tight ones, we have been avoiding checking bags when we go to Canada by only using carryons
All I can say is before you travel again check out what is happening with your airline.
Delta says 45 linear inches approximately 22" x 14" x 9" while United says it has to be those measurements. They both say including wheels and handles which I never knew were included.
Without the wheels the height of mine is fine but it is a couple of inches wide. It fits just fine in the overhead facing out instead of sideways so I don't know what the issue is.

I came in and said oh I am so disappointed I wanted to show you pictures on my computer but I need a big table -to set up but maybe another time...
she was out of bed and in her chair ready to do to the library right away
:)
I hope the nieces can put together something for future visits now that they know the secret to getting her up. I fortunately have always had a dog with me when I went to nursing homes.
One niece did pull me aside and say that he doesn't understand why she is always cooperative with me .. I told her I have an advantage - I'm not family - I don't have to visit her - so she doesn't argue with me because I might stop visiting :)
There is that too, however, family doesn't have to visit either. You might mention that to her on your next visit ;)

I don't think they allow animals (other than service animals) at the rehab, not that I have one to bring with me even if they did allow it
Echo was a therapy dog.
I would think the dogs of patients would be permitted to visit if they behaved.

Hello All:
Happiest of birthday to BK'S darling daughter and May God Bless her always!!!
-
I watched THE GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARNING last night.
I had seen it before and really enjoyed it the second time!
-
Goodbye for now!!!
-
pulled into my driveway just as two Jehovah witnesses were walking up my path
No offense intended, but I heard a very funny joke involving JWs:
What do you get when you cross a Jehovah's Witness with a Unitarian?
A person who will knock at your door for no apparent reason.
Was remembering that one yesterday for no apparent reason.
-
I am typing this post for no apparent reason.

Evening all.
That is all.

Jack, wifi has nothing to do with a browser. Yes, you need wifi to connect to the Internet using a tablet (most tablets are either Android or Apple OS but there are some Windows tables - the Surface being an example).
The wifi signal is produced by your router. You may have to turn on the wifi connection on a tablet but it may also be "on" by default. If you're trying to connect on a tablet you should see a list of wifi signals in the area. Hopefully, you know the name of your wifi connection so that you can choose it to connect. Once you're connected, you can use any browser that's on the tablet.

Just watched the Harold Lang video - "I Could Write a Book" is one of my favorite Rodgers & Hart songs.

Do you post in your sleep, TCB?

You know, it's amazing how wonderful and inviting a name like "Texas Roadhouse" sounds when you're sitting here hungry and wishing there was something in the house you really wanted to eat.
Is there one in your neighborhood?

Hi TCB,
The wifi here is problematic too. I depend on the kindness of strangers (the main office) to produce a strong enough signal for my computer to pick up. Some days, if it's windy, I can't get a signal that is consistent. I don't have the fast connection I would rather have, but at the current price, I guess I shouldn't complain.
Dan, even those of us paying top dollar for broadband have problems with it. I dislike Time Warner, but I do usually have good broadband. I will cheer when technology has obsoleted the cable companies.

What a nutty day. I got up at about ten-fifteen and at ten-forty Grant called and asked where I was - he was at the paperback show and I was supposed to be there signing at eleven. Same thing happened last year, only I missed it altogether. So, I got ready as quickly as I could, then thankfully thought to just jot down the address in Mission Hills before I left - that was smart because for the first time ever, the show wasn't being held there but in Glendale. So, I put the address in my phone and headed out - much shorter trip - unfortunately, I put Blvd. instead of Rd. and I went about five miles out of my way to a residential street. But I still got there by eleven-twenty and sat for forty minutes - I sold one book and gave out several autographs to boot. Sat next to a fantasy writer named James Blaylock who seems to have written a huge number of books. On the other side, was some guy who wrote a bio of Bob and Ray. I had fun, Grant sat by me, and then I looked around the show, before leaving for the theater.

Has anyone watched ELEVENTH HOUR? It's a British series with Patrick Stewart, which apparently ended after one season. I find it quite good.

Yup. Unfortunately Bryan can only get one confirmed day off of work. At least they didn't put him on the all night shift before his day off. That has happened. At the end of his shift he still works an additional 1-3 hours.

I love Bob and Ray! I would read that book voraciously. From Approximately Coast to Coast, It's Bob and Ray has been read and loved by me for many years. A recent issue of "Nostalgia Digest" had a cover story on Bob and Ray, which of course I also had to read.

We have gone to visit my inlaws in July and the days are wonderfully long - sun up at 4:30 and sunset after midnight -- but it never gets warmer than 70, or 75 F which would be lovely if it was a three month summer like here, but it is a short short summer -- they often have snow into late May and as early as late August

Re Mitch Leigh - I'm going to say one word - I will not elaborate on the one word, so don't ask. The word is - karma.
Is it because of "Nobody Doesn't Like Sara Lee" and the resultant curse put upon him by Jenny Craig?

Interesting section of the NY Times obituary for Mr. Leigh:
"In his later years he ventured into real estate in a memorable way, creating Jackson 21, a village-like development in Jackson Township, N.J., on land he had begun buying in the 1960s as a tax shelter. The development was intended for artists of all kinds, Mr. Leigh said, though others were accepted as well.
But he had one stipulation, as he made clear in his television commercials — in which he starred, looking a bit like Quixote — and other promotions: “If you’re not a nice person, don’t call.” "

Went back to watching another Edie Adams show. Allan Sherman is the special guest. Very strange. He got to do "Hello, Muddah" and a funny sketch as a switchblade-toting beat poet (also featuring George Furth in a small bit). But Sherman's now joining Adams in singing "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" with lots of children around them. Not good.

I doubt anyone ever thought that LP's were going to become obsolete. If they had, nobody would have bought them.

What is a tunnel bath?
"TUNNEL BATH
Phototherapy, usually employing infrared light, may be applied from a radiant heat source over part of the patient to be treated in the physiotherapy department, or an array of lamps may be used in a special frame forming a tunnel over the patient or part to be treated. The main effect is superficial heating causing increased blood supply, relief of pain, muscle relaxation and perhaps biochemical effects. Similar types exist employing ultraviolet fluorescent tubes providing UVA (280-400 nm), sometimes called the Theraktin tunnel."
What this has to do with bicycling is beyond me

Selling one book at this particular paperback show is a MAJOR achievement. None of the authors there are actually selling - they are there to sign what people bring to them.
Happy to say Red Gold has just shown up on amazon and barnesandnoble.com - amazon, being the slower of the two, doesn't have a cover image yet, which there is on the other site. And I've found one site that seems to have the eBook.

I have my copy of EILEEN and will listen to it at work tomorrow. :)
