Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both comedy and errors, and now it is time for you to post until the comedy cows come home.

Amazon and barnesandnoble.com both have the paperback, too.  Neither will be carrying the special super duper limited edition of 50, however - that has sold better than I thought it would.

Good morning, all! Today is a physical therapy day, and then I have sme errands to run. Alex Rybeck sent me an email about possible work, and I will talk to him this afternoon. We haven't spoken in ages, so it will be nice to catch up, if nothing else.

I plan to sta out of midtown; the parade and all the drunlks being "Irish" today will make navigation a complete mess.

I have no other news for now.

DR Mike is right, of course, that the meal and probably just about everything else have absolutely nothing whatever to do with St. Patrick or with being Irish.  I am none of the above, myself.  I just love the food, and will eat a nice corned beef at the drop of a hat.  And at the drop of another hat.

You know that phono cartridge I said probably should be up for replacement by now?  Of course you do.  You've thought of nothing else since I posted of it.

Well, guess what happened yesterday.  It broke!  I put a record on the turntable and found the stylus (the part with the LI'L diamond or whatever the needles are made of) BENT.  The poor little thing was turned at a right angle to the grooves!

I was actually able to nudge it back into alignment (more or less) just enough to check out this record for a minute.  It didn't play well, but I heard what I needed to hear.  And in the end, no harm done.  It had probably gone many hundreds of hours over its expected service life, and I will do some research today on what to replace it with.  It's not that I needed something new to spend money on, but let's face it, getting a new one that will probably sound fabulous will be kind of nice.

That said, I do recall traveling a few hundred miles to go to Chicago for St. Patrick's Day when it was on a weekend. We were driving from Middletown, Ohio, so this must have been in the mid 1980s.

Anyway, we got there, drank at a number of places, managed to get the car stuck in a snowdrift in a really unacceptable part of town, drank some more and when we woke up the next day, it was so late we missed the dying of the river. I remember more drinks that weekend, some green, others not. And some really good food. Love Chicago eats.

TOD:

I rode in the first Hollywood St. Patrick's Day parade with my client, Dan O'Herlihy, who was the Grand Marshal.

Also in the parade was my client, Bridget Hanley, and friend, Charles Durning, who wore a fantastic green crushed top hat that made you smile.  (His wife hated it.)

After the parade, everybody lunched at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

A most memorable day.

Hello, everyone.

Yes, we had a shaker this morning. I don't see how anyone could have slept through it. I woke up at 6 am after a car alarm went off. I fell back to sleep until the earthquake hit at 6:25. They don't normally bother me as I grew up with them, but this one had me rattled. No damage here and no reports of any that I've heard of. But what a way to start the day! Ugh.

Folks in the U.S. just aren't inclined to celebrate the anniversary of the death of a saint, except in religious observances.  To most of us, he was the man who rid Ireland of snakes.

A Gaelic Blessing:

May those who love us,
Love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles,
So we'll know them
By their limping.

DR Jrand53 -

You can turn your wired Internet into wireless by purchasing a router/modem. There are many models that are not too expensive.

I shall investigate this.  Thanks.

Actually, Jack, you would only need a router. I assume you already have a modem since you have wired internet. There are combo modem/router devices but most often nowadays, unless you are getting high end internet/phone/tv, the cable company only gives you a modem. If you want a router you have to supply it yourself, but that may save on the rental of the equipment. But, you should ask your cable company if they have modem/routers and if you can upgrade your equipment. The answer may be no but you've asked. If no, then go to Walmart or Best Buy or your local electronics store (or Radio Shack) and look at routers.

Another option is to replace the modem you have from the cable company with your own modem/router combo device. As I mentioned earlier you may be able to save on rental charges for a modem. Many cable companies, in an effort to squeeze every last penny they can out of customers, have begun to charge rental fees for modems and routers along with the cable box.

You can look at Walmart and the other stores for those devices.

4.4 I'm reading.  Have to surely stay away from Facebook or I will not be able to bite Ye Olde Tongue.

It was quickly downgraded from a 4.7.  I think those outside of the area read 4.7 and of course locals know to wait a few minutes for an accurate report.

Thank you, bk. Because of the reviews, I was not going to go out of my way to see "The Book Thief." I had loved the book too much. I would have eventually seen it, I'm sure, but now I'm actively going to seek it out.

I am hoping Keith reads the book before we see the movie.  I am expecting the feel of the movie  to be different, and not nearly as good as the book, but the previews still look good.

Of course, DR Jennifer and DR Michael Shayne are our resident experts on the weather in Canada, but I've been to both Ottawa and Montreal in summer (July) and experienced 70s and low 80s. It was starting to cool in September, whereas in DC September is still hot, so  a shorter summer than DC, but still quite ample, to my mind. But I don't like hot weather. And I'm told that British Columbia is quite temperate.

Wow, I also have a plumbing story for today.  Relating to things being green, the pool at my apartment complex is on the fritz again, and so, as a result, we have been without water for at least 2 hours now.  I'm so glad I started cooking my dinner earlier.  I'm not Irish, but I like corned beef.  I do not like putting it all in the same boiling water.  I bake everything separately in the oven, and make braised cabbage on the stove top.  Not that I'm a big cabbage person.  (That last sentence is hanging out there like a perfect pitch to hit out of the ballpark for DR singdaw!)

Was taken to lunch by a co-worker today (a group of us, actually).  We went to Wood Tavern in Oakland.  Delightful little place.  Special of the Day was "St. Patricks' Day Corned Beef with freshly made sauerkraut and french fries".  The sauerkraut was delicious, mostly because it wasn't too sour...and the fires were skinny and crisp and delicious.  The corned beef was nicely done with a wonderful smokey flavor.

He'll have your cabbages so small they'll look like Brussels sprouts.

Happy St. Paddy's Day, all!

I've gone missing for a couple of days, partly because my lovely Irish mother was in the hospital, and there was a real fear of losing her yesterday. Happily, she made it through an emergency surgery and is in ICU for recovery. So far, so good.

Re BK's notes on THE BOOK THIEF

I'm really very unimpressed by most of what passes for media entertainment as it does seem to be fashioned for people with hummingbird attention spans and very superficial intelligence.  I'm not saying that we all must be MENSA members, but the mean intelligence out there is from a very shallow pool, a kiddie pool of brain cells as it were.

I've always been skeptical if something becomes extremely popular.  Thinking of the lemmings and the followers of cults, no matter of what stripe.  I just don't get THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and the histrionics that pass for acting.  It's like thinking that if you yell loudly enough it emphasizes importance.  Subtlety is sorely missed because the "oblivipods"TM would never look up from their iPads long enough to pay attention.  I don't think they could get through a silent movie one-reeler because that would require too much concentration.  There's no crane shot or quick cut to make up for what is lacking in the story, the acting or the directing.

To me, those editing tricks, make me feel the filmmaker's manipulation in an obvious way.  It's as if the thinking all along was: we'll fix it in the editing room, instead of making something special happen elsewhere in the process.  I'm just talking as a layperson, not anyone who has any technical skill, so maybe I'm out on a limb.

In early 1999, our building’s super Albin, who was from the Caribbean, moved back to open a guest house with his wife, who worked as a chef. He didn’t like the landlord’s choice of a replacement since he had been trying to get one of his cronies the job. Our new super was a strong, short (5 ft, 6 inches or so) elderly Serbian, around 60 years old named Steve Trifun, and his wife was a very large lady whose grasp of English was very limited. Steve’s English was hardly better and I believe he had a hard time fitting in with the tenants because we had a major problem communicating with him. They kept the building clean, much cleaner than the previous, who had pretty much given up on the job for over a year before returning to the Caribbean, and covered building problems well.

I personally had no grasp on what they thought of the demanding tenants who smiled, occasionally barked, and tried to explain to them what they needed or what apartment problems they had. I was suffering that summer from a major health crisis: I was losing my mobility, I was having trouble standing and maintaining balance, I could hardly walk, I couldn’t use my hands, and my doctor, who I believe was put out to retirement in 2009 or so after his third misdiagnosis of my health problems cost the HMO a bit of money, was dragging his heels in locating the problems. In early October 1999, he finally sent me for an MRI and the diagnosis was that I was crippled by two crushed discs in my neck. I needed a referral to see a neurosurgeon.

So, in early November 1999,  waiting on that referral and hardly able to move, I flew to London for rehearsals and performance of my Cole Porter show JUBILEE, which would be broadcast by the BBC. I flew back to New York on a Monday, two weeks before Thanksgiving. The taxi driver let me out in front of my building and, carrying a suitcase and a large bag, I lurched - I really couldn’t walk by that point - to the door of my building, got inside the lobby, and because my feet weren’t working well, I fell up the four steps and sprawled there, tangled in bags and unable to rise. Out of nowhere, Steve showed up, untangled me, lifted me up and carried my two bags to the elevator as I lurched/crawled after him. Since that day, our little old super - he’s about seven years older than I - has been my hero. We’ve become great friends, and he and his wife are people I laugh and joke with, and look forward to see daily. He’s been looking out for me since this current round of bad health from last August.

Today he broke my heart: on Saturday, Mr & Mrs Trifun will move back to Serbia, and i will most likely never see or hear from them again.  He told me this when he came up to see about the bathroom leak, and, I guess, to officially tell me goodbye.  I haven't stopped weeping since. I am going to miss them.  Enormously.

The earthquake this morning was intense - short, though.  I just did what I always do - sat in bed and kept saying, "Stop, stop, stop" until the thing listened to me.  It probably wasn't the ten seconds I thought, more like six.

I read 5 but people talked as if it was much longer.

When the earth is shaking five seconds seems long.

My library just got Gravity and Catching Fire. So it will be a big movie week for me as I'm going to see Divergent on Wednesday.

I don't actually love going to the movie theatre, as I have a hard time sitting for that long. For some reason my knees don't like being scrunched up like that.

My entire body feels that way ;)   Is your theater stadium seating?  Those tend to be more comfortable.

I have trouble sitting for long periods, also. I find that making small adjustments helps a lot. Being in the dental chair is a good example. I tend to tense up a bit when at the dentist, even for simple things like a cleaning. It's just uncomfortable for me. So when the dentist/hygienist turns away, I turn my head just a bit or make some other adjustment. I have a new dentist and last time I explained this to her. I find that they don't really care--they have to turn away periodically anyway, so I just make use of that second or two.

It was indeed intense--lots of shaking rather than the rolling kind. Yes, five or six seconds, rather than ten. I normally just sit still and wait to see if something more is happening. Today, though, perhaps because I was sleeping, it scared me and I was thinking, "This could be a big one," and jumped out of bed.

When you jumped out of bed where did you go?

There's a small hallway just off the bathroom, where the closets are. It's perfect--no windows and I could close both doors if glass were flying. We've had earthquakes before, of course, but I've never taken refuge there before.

I can see it now.  Jolt happens and the immediate reaction of everyone is to grab whatever device is handy and post to Facebook. I mean withi five second.

I think that many younger people cannot fathom being alone, and thus feel they must share EVERYTHING.

Age had nothing to do with sharing the news on FB-lol.  Being alone might have.  It is nice to have people to talk to when you are wide awake and can't sleep anymore.   I hope you were able to go back to sleep.

I don't use Facebook, but I do notice many twenty-somethings who can't seem to sit still anywhere for even a moment. They immediately pick up their phones. They talk or play games, but they seldom pick up a magazine or sit quietly. I never saw this ten years ago.

I can understand the attraction of 24/7 social media sites such as HHW when you want to connect with others at odd hours. Well, I can understand the attraction at other times, too. But most of us don't call our friends at 2 am.

I knew I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep, so I checked my email, read the news, then started my laundry. Mondays are busy days for me and I wanted to get started on the day.

DR Dan, I agree with your posts about the short attention span and being leery of the very popular entertainments. I suspect quite a few DRs share that.

If you like quiet films, may I suggest a French film that BK and I both love, THE HEDGEHOG. It's very French and I don't really know your taste, but it's not at all like the vastly popular Hollywood stuff. I haven't yet seen THE BOOK THIEF, but as BK reviewed it, I kept thinking of THE HEDGEHOG.

Started watching Finian's Rainbow. I love the soundtrack more than the movie, because the way Coppola cuts the musical numbers is irritating. Still, the first half hour of this has been beautiful. Then when night falls for the first time and the natural setting moves to the weird studio look, the magic doesn't linger. Also, Tommy Steele isn't in the first half hour.

I called my internet company and asked how I could get wifi.  They had me create a scrrenname and a password, and a few minutes later they said you now have wifi.  I asked how much it was going to cost me, and they said, "Nothing."  They said if you have internet, you can have wifi.

Just this morning I said to Vixdad over breakfast, "I wonder if Chas  has replaced his  phonograph cartridge yet"

To which he replied, "Why, you must remember to ask the old chap next time you see him"

Then the maid cleared away the dishes and the chauffeur brought around the Rolls

Sure if he was born on January 1, his name would have been Hangover.

Happy St. Paddy's Day, all!

I've gone missing for a couple of days, partly because my lovely Irish mother was in the hospital, and there was a real fear of losing her yesterday. Happily, she made it through an emergency surgery and is in ICU for recovery. So far, so good.

BK, loved your review of THE BOOK THIEF. I will definitely see it now, thank you.

Wishing everyone a joyous and very lucky day!

Best wishes to your mother for a quick and complete recovery.

DR Vixmom I didn't realize your in-laws were on my side of the world.  The summers there are much like the summers in Alaska.  Do they also have spectacular midnight sunsets?

Why do they live there?

Vixdad's sister married in the 1970's when England was having a high unemployment  problem   Her husband was a electrician.  Vixgranny had been corresponding with a lady in Canada since the two of them were girls during WWII and the Canadian lady invited  the newly weds to visit and to look for opportunity in Canada which  was in need of skilled tradesmen.  Just around then the small farming community of Grande Prairie  discovered oil and suddenly there was building going on  like crazy and they were in need of electricians  so the newlyweds moved to Canada and became Canadian citizens and had babies (2)

The Vixdad came to  the USA and met  yours truly and decided to stay here.

Vixgranny and Vixgrandad realized that neither of their children was going to take over their restaurant  so they sold up and moved to where the grandchildren were.. (the Vixter didn't show up until  a few years later)

Are you sorry you asked?  :)

That is one hell of a story, DR Elmore.

You will always miss these people, but VIBES you get a really good new super.

The new super is Steve's son-in-law. He's a good guy and he was just here.

DR elmore I felt so very bad for you that I couldn't respond right away.  I was terribly worried who your new super would be and am greatly relieved it will be someone who will continue to look out for you.  You will also have news of how your friends are doing.

That is sad about your super leaving. And crazy that nobody told the people upstairs about the plumbing problem. Hope it all gets resolved. !!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well it is still very cold here now. But often in April it is nice. And May. June, July and August are usually fairly hot. I would say  it is 80s in July and August. And September is usually nice as well.

whereabouts are you?  The Canadian Clan live fairly northerly -  this is a sign we pass on the way to the local mall

So . . . no one told the tenants above me about the leak and she just took a shower. My bathroom is a total shambles. I went up and spoke to her husband about the situation,we agree the plumbers are assholes, and he said that would be the end of the tub unril the plumber shows up. There's a good half-inch of water on the floor and it was pouring from the ceiling in about 10-12 places.

so shortly your downstairs neighbor should be getting an indoor rainstorm?

Back from a lovelier than lovely corned beef and cabbage meal with Barry and Cindy.  I thought it was going to be a small dinner party with other friends, but it turned out I was the only guest - and that was great, actually.  We had a good deal of fun.  Even better, when I picked up my mail, the softcover version of Red Gold had arrived - always a thrilling moment to hold the actual book, although that moment is always best with the hardcover.

If the plumbers are truly incompetent a higher priority might not help. I suspect that Larry's apartment would be deemed uninhabitable and alternative housing should be provided, but that's hardly convenient. Fix leak, let dry, replaster ceiling, prime, paint--it could take weeks.

Sorry to hear about the travails of elmore's bathroom environment.  I would not be able to stay there - I have a thing about bathrooms and any disorder I cannot deal with and have to be far away from.  I remember the horror of when we were subletting Debbie Gravitte's upper West Side apartment and they had to rip up the bathroom floor - my worst nightmare and I finally went to a hotel.
