Title: A MOUTHFUL OF ONIONS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a mouthful, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've currently got not only a MOOthful of onions, they've also got bunions.

Here's a question for you, BK...do you have any idea when "Red Gold" might be available again as a Kindle download?

I've asked the question but haven't had an answer - I thought you were reading the actual book?

I am, but it's slow going.  I read on my lunch time, but I have to use one hand to keep the book open and one hand to eat with.  If it's on my Kindle, I can just set the Kindle down on the table and use both my hands to feed my gaping maw. :D

I've been reading a lot more since I got my Kindle and it's just a little more convenient, at least when I read when I'm eating.

If I could read RED GOLD on my Kindle, I'd be finished by now. But much of the time I have to read is at night in bed, and can't disturb the DH by having the light on.

Good morning, all!  I have a trek to City Center around noon, and there's work to be done this morning on this Cincinnati Chorus arrangement. I'm thinking about the three Rob Berman lunchtime concerts in May, and I've got to put in some time on the ROBERTA liner notes as well.  I think i've gone from the famine of October-November 2013 to the other side of the chart, so I'm happy to be busy. Now, if i could only walk without the ordeal of walking!

So, that's my news.

DR JRand63, good news about casting G&D!

DR JohnG, I'm sorry to hear about the news of your friend.

DR Laura, welcome back!

And it brings up the question: BK, If "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were the second song you learned on the piano, what were the first and the third?

I taped an interview yesterday with the Yesterday USA Radio network.  We talked about many things, but primarily Basil Rathbone.

The interview will air on Saturday (12) at about 10:30 pm Eastern Time.

To hear it, go to www.yesterdayusa.com and click on listen live and it will play if you have a live365 player,  if you do not, there is a free down load that take a minute to down load and play.  The interview will be rerun next Wednesday 4-16-14 different times of the day on the Blue fee starting at 4 AM Eastern time.

On the plus side:

Someone on our events committee hatched an idea that we should have a Pizza for Lunch day as a fund raiser.  One slice of pizza is $3.  One slice of pizza with salad and a soda is $7.  A whole 12-slice pizza is $30.

On the negative side:

They are buying the pizzas from CostCo where the 12-slice pizza costs $9.99.  They are anticipating HUGE profits, from what I gather.

On the "me" side:  I ain't buyin' into it!

Yes DR GINNY, they do.  He is THE dentist to see in Cloverdale, and we have done many shows together.  Craig and Sarah and their younger sister Deborah are all now grown up and married...and it's hard to imagine!

Craig played one of my sons in CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and Michael in PETER PAN.

Sarah is married to Dustin who is playing Sky....so I've got a great dedicated group.

Just off the phone with Richard Sherman.  We've been getting such wonderful response to our little song that we're thinking about going into the studio to record it - he on piano, Guy Haines singing.  Sandy is recording it, too, this summer, but we thought it would be fun to have us doing it, too - just plain and simple.

And then dear reader Ron Pulliam had written and suggested we do sheet music and I loved that idea, so that's in the works - we can sell it at Kritzerland, our shows, and other online places - we could even have a special version signed by Richard and I.  What do you think?

I LOVE eating while reading (or is it reading while eating??), and have done so ever since school years, but I'd never attempt it with any kind of book or other material that's collectible or which for any reason shouldn't be exposed to possible abuse.  I used to try, on occasion, to maintain impeccable control of a book with one hand while eating with the other, but long since gave it up.  It's just not worth the aggravation and distraction, and neither the reading nor the eating is properly served.

I actually do it very little at all now, for two easily identifiable (by me) reasons:  (1) With my (ahem) "over-40" eyesight, i.e. needing reading glasses, it's just not as easy to sit at a desk or table or a counter or what have you, and try to see the printed material clearly by tilting my head to find the best angle for focusing on the print -- all the while trying to eat.  And if I'm wearing contacts (distance in left eye, close-up in the right), that presents its own weirdness in that situation.  (2) This has always worked better when reading a magazine or newspaper as opposed to a book, anyway (except when it comes to a book I can totally abuse to get the son-of- it to lay flat), and unfortunately, with newspapers having been reduced to what they are now, I rarely even buy one, and the few magazines I'm ever compelled to buy are, again, items I don't want exposed to stains and spillage and being battered around.

More than you wanted to know, probably, and no one even asked my opinion on the matter...   :)

But wait, there's more!    :)

I also love eating while watching movies or pretty much anything I'm looking at on the TV.  That, unfortunately, becomes a compulsion if you get into the habit of doing it, and I've had to deliberately pull myself back from "needing" it all the time.

Now here's a fairly trivial matter (in relation to life, the universe, and everything) that maybe somebody knows the answer to:

On this board, old-fashioned punctuation emoticons are converted and displayed as actual smileys.  And that's fine.  Where it turns weird is when you deliberately type some punctuation that you mean to be seen as just that, and it converts it into a wholly unexpected graphic.

For instance, I just sent someone a private message (oh yes, a very private message indeed) in which I ended a question with four question marks.  The software converted that to one single question mark running right up against a "huh" face, changing the tone and making it look like I'm an idiot at a keyboard.  Well, actually, I probably am an idiot at a keyboard.  But I digress...

I can't find a way to tell it not to do that.  Anyone know?

And then dear reader Ron Pulliam had written and suggested we do sheet music and I loved that idea, so that's in the works - we can sell it at Kritzerland, our shows, and other online places - we could even have a special version signed by Richard and I.  What do you think?

Heck yeah!!

A 300% mark-up for a Costco pizza??  I'd buy a slice for a good cause, but absolutely NOT a whole Costco pizza at that price. :-\

But that's just me.

Apparently the Kindle version won't be up for another two to four weeks, so just read the real book - more fun that way anyway.

I'm definitely reading the real book.  I wouldn't wait that long just for the convenience.

Anybody have the recordings yet of "Bridges of Madison County" and "Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder"? Thoughts?

The latter I have listened to bits of on Spotify and enjoyed it. It reminds me of Drood for some reason.

What a coinkydink!  That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of when I was listening to it just yesterday!

Right now, I'm listening to the 4-track demo of "Bridges" that's available to (legitimately) stream HERE (https://soundcloud.com/bridgesbroadway/falling-into-you/s-MWaKD?in=bridgesbroadway/sets/the-bridges-of-madison-county).  I really like the songs.  I will definitely get the whole CD.

Back from a very good and fun lunch.  Had the short stack (two pancakes) - great, and tried the mac-and-cheese, which was really good.

So, here's the next question open for discussion: From the early 1970s, we had a critic in LA named Rob Stevens.  Really nice guy, and always very good to me.  In the 80s, he began doing the Robby Awards, which were always great fun - it was a little yearly event, with performances and awards, and it's where I discovered Michelle Nicastro.  Robby got burned out on all of it and moved to San Diego a decade ago.  Recently he moved back to LA and he's been reviewing for some tiny site called Stage Happenings - he reviewed the March Kritzerland show and has a rave for last Sunday's show that frustratingly hasn't been posted yet.  That's a recurring problem at these "review" sites - they're not run professionally.

So, here's my idea: We bring Robby and his reviews and maybe even resurrect the Robby Awards, right here to haineshisway.com - under the "Now Playing" section we already have built.  He would review shows - and wouldn't be like 90% of the other LA reviewers in that he would not automatically give raves - he would review fairly to his taste.  He's already on a bunch of press lists and I'm sure we can get him on all the others.  Like Donald's radio show, this would be his own corner of the site and given how much traffic we get here, which is HUGE compared to any of the home grown tiny theatre sites, which mostly were started by actors so free tickets could be had, he'd actually have a built-in audience.

What do you think?

He really wants to do it - and it should be relatively easy - he'd have his own log-in information to that one specific page - from there all he has to do is click edit, enter his review, click publish and it's done.  The unknown that would probably have to be set up is an archive of past reviews - so I have a call in about that.  If we decide to do it it will probably happen next week.

DR ChasSmith - try the "preview" option. And a tastefully inserted space, here and there.

Good idea.  I do preview posts if they get long or elaborate, but haven't thought of doing so when jotting off a note.

You can also click the "Attachments and other options" link when previewing and check the "Don't use smileys" option.  Of course then, no emoticons will show, but then there's the tastefully inserted space option. :)

HOWEVER, if someone quotes your message without the smileys option, they would have to uncheck the box, also, or your message will then contain the said smiley.

Yes.  Three ?s equal that face you talked about.  Put a space between the question marks to give your question emphasis without the face:

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

instead of

?????????

Rob Stevens will definitely be joining the haineshisway.com family as the site's theatre reviewer, where he is free to call it as he sees it, even if he's reviewing something I'm involved in.  I think this will be a lot of fun.  When he debuts, we'll all spread the word all over the place.

Very strange things happening in town. I mentioned that my friend Steve had died yesterday. Steve had been the beneficiary of an event called Chefs 4 Chefs, in which a number of local chefs held a brunch to raise money for Steve's medical bills. Last year, when the event started, it was to benefit a young girl named Emma who was suffering from a brain tumor. Got the news today that Emma died this morning. So incredibly sad.

Thanks, George. I listened to those songs from Bridges. Really do enjoy them for their passion. Still not sold on Kelli O'Hara. She sounds a little too mannered, as if she's spending too much time on the accent.

And every time I hear "Francesca," I have to think of the parody, "Ditches of Madison County" with its porcine heroine, Pancetta Jackson.
