Well, you've read the notes, the notes exploded and did the ballet, and now it is time for you to post until the exploding cows come home.

I hope that Matthew's opening night and George's opening night went well.

Thanks!  It did!  For Thursday night's pay-what-you-can preview, we had three, count 'em, three people who donated.  We had two other people in the audience, but they all enjoyed the show.

Last night's opening night for "Chamber Music" went really well.  We had about a dozen people and they really liked the show.  They laughed appropriately and they were also shocked appropriately at what happens (no spoiler from me!).  We had a little party after the show to celebrate the opening of the show, and to celebrate our first show in our new home.  We had fun, chatted, ate, visited and a good time was had by all.  We think that the show will be successful.  It won't the the hit that "Reservoir Dogs" was for us last year, but I'm sure that it'll end up being a good show for us. :)

Today will be a very long day for me.  For Christmas, I bought my sister tickets to see a new musical version of A Room With a View (https://www.5thavenue.org/show/a-room-with-a-view).  The movie is one of my sister's favorite movies.  She, her boyfriend, my mom and I are all going to see today's matinee.  I got the tickets with a discount, so they were practically half priced.

Louis Hobson (who was in Next To Normal) and Patti Cohenour (The Light in the Piazza) are in the cast.  Louis Hobson was also in a production of A Rock & Roll Twelfth Night (http://castalbums.org/recordings/A-Rock-n-Roll-Twelfth-Night-2003-Revival-Cast/18847) that Harlequin Productions here in Olympia wrote (they're actually bringing it back next season!).

Another cast member, Jenny Shotwell, is from Olympia.  We were in Annie together back in 1993 or 1994 when I played seven different roles and she played Annie!  She was a very good performer at that young age and still is!  Last year, when my friends Rick and Scott got married, people could sing after the ceremony and she sang a couple of songs.  She had a wonderful voice.  I can't wait to see her in a grown up show! :D

My sister wants to go out to eat after the show and then go to IKEA, so we'll do that.  I told the stage manager and the director that I more than likely won't be there for the 8:00 pm show, but I should be back in town for our one and only 10:00 pm show.  Since this is my one and only conflict and there aren't even a dozen cues for lights and sound combined, they had no problem with me being off.  I'll certainly be at every other performance.

Long day ahead.

This morning is the Fiesta Pooch Parade with people dressing their dogs up and then forcing them to walk 1.25 miles in the heat.

This evening, a pair of friends from the dance studio I go to are getting married. It'll be my first time back to the studio in about nine months. I pity my partners' feet.

Johnny Mercer on stage. Too many songs on Saratoga sound truncated, would love some of the songs from The Good Companions, plus Foxy, St. Louis Woman, etc.

Hugh Martin: Make a Wish has some great stuff. Love High Spirits, Best Foot Forward, even Love from Judy. Of course, he wrote great stuff for the movies, too. (Doubt anyone would know it.)

Flaherty and Ahrens has built a strong body of work.

There is a series out there that looks at Broadway year by year, but that doesn't work for me as well as a look at various seasons would.

and I'll second the Carolyn Leigh nomination.

Good morning, all! I slept in because I could.

I have some work here today and a day to myself. I've got a couple of DVDs I want to watch and I need to track down Kim Criswell who's been sighted about Manhattan this week.  I think she leaves today for Chattanooga and if we can't get together, we can at least talk.

DR ChasSmith, another triumph!

DR Cillaliz, what a disaster! I can only wish the best for the aftermath. I have a memory that happened once to my parents around 50 years ago, when we kept a large freezer stocked in our basement.

DR George, A Room With A View is by a wonderful writer Marc Acito and Jeff Stock, whose score for The Triumph of Love is quite wonderful.  Jeff's a piece of work and a former friend.

DR TCB, a total of five in the house? Did they like the show?

Back at home -- wiith (free) rental car which I'll use to get to the show tonight.  I drop it off when I pick my car up tomorrow morning at about $2,100-o'clock.

Yes, DRs, the clutch was indeed going, and once it starts slipping, you might be lucky nursing it for a while but you have to expect full failure at any time.  So, $1380 for that, plus a tune-up and alignment and a few other "little" things.

I'd have it back this evening, but since I won't be here I'm also VERY happy that Firestone is open on Sundays.

A very good question, DR vixmom.  I always think about that in relation to period references, but of course you'd have to wonder what kind of awareness they have of the piece and its background at all.  Yes, a most excellent question.  Why, I almost wish I'd asked it myself.

Thanks to all for congratulations re the show.  The kids totally deserve it.  I wish I could pat my own self on the back, but I nearly fumbled a couple of patch changes, and seemed to suddenly be all thumbs during the piano's LI'L one-note (melody only)* solo in the four-bar intro to one of the songs.  Not so's anyone would really notice, but ..... sheesh.

*(which, sadly, can't be played with all thumbs)

Oh, Jane, I asked the guy who set up the children's book section about the Cleaver book.  He said he didn't see anything like that.  Since he saw every book, I'm guessing it's not there, but I'll look. He did say there's a book about a farting dog, and that it was a good book.  I didn't take the time to look for it, lol

I appreciate your asking for me.

I know about the farting dog books (note plural) as we purchased a couple of them along with the farting dog for our grandnephews.  They were a BIG hit with the children and adults. ;D

TOD:

I'm certainly not as well-versed as others on musical theater, but I never hear any George M. Cohan except when I watch YANKEE DOODLE DANDY.  Maybe those songs are not well-travelled over the years, I'm not sure.

Not to duplicate what others have said, and to perhaps reveal my lack of education in this subject, I would start with the lyricists, because I personally have no trouble getting the tune on first listen, it's the lyrics that don't always make intuitive sense to me.  But, the two brothers whose lyrics for me always became as memorable as the tune, are Hal and Mack David.  They co-wrote with many great composers.

Following from Mack David, how about one of his his frequent collaborators, Jerry Livingston?  These I think would be fun to hear on stage.  F'rinstance, there could be a medley of the many TV themes which would undoubtedly be a rich source of in-between patter.  Who wouldn't love to hear the theme from "Mister Ed" done in an ironic way like a serious classical song?  Plus, the other fun songs like "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo" and "Mairzy Doats", and "The Bugs Bunny Theme", too.

These are my two cents, and maybe they're not even worth that, but it's a post, and I chimed in, and it's my story, and I'm sticking with it, and that's the truth [cue Lily Tomlin and her Bronx cheer].

Busy afternoon. I think I got my friend Ben Davis, who had to turn down ROBERTA twice! because of a City Opera commitment, a London Proms concert in August with the John Wilson Orchestra, I've done some IRMA LA DOUCE work, and I've inventoried the contents of my backup hard drives. The last was tedious but really necessary.

Sorry DR Cillaliz. That is a big fear of mine that my freezer will lose power/get unplugged.  I have a lot of stuff in there.

I was lucky that it wasn't very full and it needed to be cleaned out.  AND that I figured it out before it was a moldy mess

Today, I'm happy to learn that there are two additional over-the-air TV channels that broadcast over the sub-channels on digital signal in my area, which, for someone like me who does not have cable/satellite, is a potential bonanza for alternative choices to the humdrum standard broadcast fare.  The first is called "getTV" and right now, from the listings anyway, this channel is showing the Lex Baxter movies in which he plays Old Shatterhand in the German-French-(Yugoslavian?) co-production of the Winnetou series by Karl May.  These movies predated the Spaghetti Westerns.  The other channel that I should be able to receive is ION TV, which I am familiar with from NY (at one time it seemed to play "Mama's Family" ad infinitum), but I am less excited about it save for the fact that it adds to my limited over-the-air choices.

Unfortunately, I cannot program my stupid TV right now and will have to wait until a friend does it for me.  The stupid TV I have is not the one I had in my other apartment (that was lifted by the robbers).  That one I could program.  This one is a poor substitute and since there is an after-market remote with it, I find it to be next to impossible to do anything without erasing current channels or muting the sound.

Speaking of reading, I should get back to my library books.  The sooner I'm caught up, the sooner I can read Red Gold though a part of me is cherishing that I have this to look forward to.

There's one review on Barnes and Noble and it's a goodie.  I don't think many people do reviews on that site like they do on amazon.  Goodreads - I have done those giveaways on the last three books and everyone applies for them, you send out ten books and no one reviews them, or, if they do, you're being reviewed by some opinionated teen who trashes it because it doesn't conform to the kinds of books they like or characters they like.  One such young lady of eighteen informed her "reading public" of three people that no sixteen-year-old would ever call their mother "mommy".  Really?  Note to young lady: Just because you live in such a rather silly world, does not mean that the majority of young girls inhabit it with you.  I happen to know at least ten sixteen-year-old girls who call their mothers mommy because, oh, I don't know, call me crazy, that's what girls of that age have been calling their mothers for decades - oh, I do realize there is a subset of entitled kids who have been parented by parents trying to be their "friends" rather than actual parents and yes, they probably call their mothers by their first names.  Phooey on that.

Yes, I remember that.  I wouldn't suggest you do the giveaway again but those who have put reviews on Amazon might just as easily post the review on the other sites.  I rarely use Amazon, mostly because they they tag me with ads for anything I look up.

Although I am not now nor never was a 16 year-old girl, I never, never called my Mom by her first name.  She would have been greatly insulted by that and she would have hit me for being "too forward".  In fact, in public or at a function, my Mom would also be insulted if she was referred to as "she".  "She" was not her first name.  My Mom was and will always be "Ma" which is how I always addressed her.

I hope so.

Continued good health vibes to you.  The one and only time I ever had laryngitis, I rolled with it and pretended that I was doing an impression of Lucy in her latter days when her voice was two octaves lower.

Started the evening by watching MUSIC SCENE  a short-lived ABC series from 1969-1970 which starred David Steinberg, Lily Tomlin and The Committee.  The credited writers also included Tony Hendra.  Patrick Williams was the musical director.  He wrote the theme song and conducted the orchestra in a performance of it.  I would seek out more Patrick Williams; I am familiar with his TV theme songs, but not as much with his movie scoring.

Some of the guests were great, like the Everly Brothers performing a medley of then-current songs.  Some choices were odd, like Della Reese and Steve Lawrence alongside Merle Haggard and Three Dog Night.  Apparently "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies was the big song that season and so was featured on many of the programs included on the DVD.  Several groups covered the song, with the animated Archies "performing" the song on the very last show.  There never seemed to be a settled format for the show and unlike The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour this was not the proper vehicle for Steinberg's talents.  Overall, a failure of a TV show, with some maybe weirdly brilliant moments, but not surprisingly cancelled as it did not fit on regular late 60s TV.  I still liked it though.

Am in the middle of THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX and am liking it.  Even George Clooney can't ruin this one for me.  Wes Anderson is very clever and even though this is a stop-motion animated movie, his style is all over it.  Highly recommended.
