Well, you've read the notes, the notes were on the road to Dogpatch, and now it is time for you to post until the Dogpatch cows come home.

Good morning, all.

Lots to do today away from the house, so I will be a bit E&T.

Seems I could have used some more sleep.  Must have been awake last night later than I thought.

Oh well.  Coffee!

Good morning, all! I have a day of work but it's mostly here at the computer.

First thing, a trip to the pharmacy for some prescriptions. Then, I have breakfast with my friend Rosemary Ashe, who was Sir Andrew's original London Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera, before she flies back to London. I have to finish a synopsis of Jerome Kern's OH. BOY! and send it to Rob Berman this afternoon, and do some work on the ROBERTA liner notes.

Then, maybe, I'll spend the evening with my Britcoms and perhaps one of the Netfllx discs that's been sitting here for two weeks.

I am enjoying the LI'L ABNER notes immensely.

DR ChasSmith, I had a typo in my post on the London recording of IRMA: there are around 10 tracks from French recordings, not 19.

Great LI'L ABNER notes today!

It's so funny about what we first get familiar with, and how it determines our preferences later.  I saw the movie first, too, but would have been just a little younger.  And then it was probably a year or two before I saw it a second time (I remember that time being on TV) which of course only served to renew my interest and love for the piece.  BUT... I didn't have an album until some time after that, and when we got one, it was the Broadway cast, which I then proceeded to play to death.  So, since I hadn't driven the sound of the film into my head, those arrangements were kind of forgotten until years later.  I did get the soundtrack LP back then (still have my first copy), but for some reason only played it a little bit.  Finally, when I did the show while in 9th or 10th grade, that more or less married me to the original score.

Over the years, I grew and learned to open myself up to new arrangements, but I was surprisingly rigid back in my teens and twenties.

Correction noted, DR Elmore!  Sounds like a very interesting album.

Theater friends are usually shocked, shocked, to hear that I grew up preferring the soundtrack albums to West Side Story and The Music Man.  I can assure you that's evolved over the years, but those movies were my initial exposure to the shows, and they got driven into the deepest recesses of my LI'L brain.  I still prefer a few things about the latter (notably "Being in Love"), and though I now embrace the original West Side Story, I'll never shake my passion for the hyped up forces and drive of the film score.  But that movie at that age practically changed my life, so what the hell.

Edit:  This applies to any kind of music, certainly in the classical and opera world.  If you grew up with Toscanini recordings, Ormandy wasn't going to cut it.  And so it goes.  What you get used to, man.  Strong stuff.

I often have preferred whatever version of a score I first encountered. I love listening to the Finian's Rainbow and the Hello, Dolly! soundtracks, even if the movies leave something to be desired. I think it took until the arrival of what I call the Elmore Finian's that I found a recording to surpass the soundtrack.

Barry went to the ER last night.  He's been down with what everyone has been down with - missed two rehearsals, then was with us last night and seemed fine to me.  But he's a huge hypochondriac and it can never just be anything simple.  They told him he doesn't even have the flu or anything else, but he just told me they ordered forty-eight hours of bed rest.  Oy and vey.  He needs these rehearsals as much as anyone and he will have missed four in this key period.  I've told him when he comes in on Monday for our run-through I need performance level and that's that.

Just read through the daily digest of CASTRECL which includes the reviews and some comment on IRMA LA DOUCE.

Good lord.  Where is the love for this piece?  In a matter of days I, personally, caught up with 1960 and went crazy over the thing -- especially the music and the unique orchestration, which I thought is what Encores! is all about, anything in addition to a fantastic rendition of the score being icing on the cake.

A work like this will certainly have its weaknesses seen through today's eyes, but so what?  The reviews seem almost ridiculously harsh, even toward the leads who weren't to everyone's liking.  But very few seemed to have really cared about what I was so blown away by.  Oh well.  Very strange.

As far as I can recall, my introduction to LI'L ABNER was our high school production of it. I was aware of the cartoon strip, although I had never really read it.

It wasn't until shortly after we did the play that I saw the movie. I didn't really care for the film all that much at the time, but I have grown to absolutely love it. I am so bummed that I will not be able to see BK's production of the show, as I know full well he will do it better than anyone could, because he cares so much about it!

I'm pretty sure I knew about the cartoon strip when seeing the movie for the first time, but it was one of those I'd skim over, not one of my favorites.

The memory on that is really vague, though.  I know I've never gone back to the comic in all these years, so I'd think reading some samples of it now would be interesting.

The score is a personal favorite and has been from the moment I listened to the album for the first time. Hearing it reduced to background music for the dreadfully unfunny Billy Wilder movie made me mad.

Oh -- and no one, save DR Elmore, has offered any criticism re Mr. Doyle's handling of the final number!    :)

I doubt anyone on Manhattan's team of critics ever saw IRMA LA DOUCE before now, so how can they complain about something of which they know little?  They pan the libretto, but it's John Doyle's abridgment they are seeing, not the original Broadway libretto, but they know the book is lousy.

What I find amazing, and here I climb onto my soapbox, is that so many assholes claim to love musical theatre, but they are so intolerant: "Music in the Air" is old-fashioned, the libretto for "Babes in Toylad" stinks, "Irma La Douce" is a lousy show; well, all of these shows in 1932, 1903, and 1960 were for their time sophisticated, state of the art musicals. They were crafted and staged by some of the best show people of their time. Peter Brook was a great director, Hammerstein and Kern were major influences, and Julian Mitchell who  had the sense to get the best theatre composer of the time for "Babes In Toyland," was the leading director-choreographer of his time.

Don't these jerks complaining of the Encores! shows they don't much like realize that so much of the current crop of writers and shows as the times change will also become yesterday's news?  Broaden your minds and learn to appreciate the wide variety out there.

Amen.

When I was growing up (from the age of about 9 or 10) I read the "Li'l Abner" comic strip faithfully, especially the Sunday strip.  I can't for the life of me remember any of the stories (although someone was always strying to swindle them out of their lands), but I was devoted to it.

Ditto "Dick Tracy".  I do remember "Junior" Tracy and "Moon Maid" and how "Moon Maid" was discovered (trip to the Moon) and Junior falling in love with her when he first met her on earth.

The comments about the LI'L ABNER comic strip remind me of when DR Elmore directed YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN and I was in the cast as Lucy.  He came to an early rehearsal with an armload of paperback books of PEANUTS cartoons and encouraged us to read them as we prepped for our roles.  Are there compendia of LI'L ABNER strips?

I'm sincerely confused (and perhaps this is colored by my own differences with them, the way City Center personnel act like they're any cold, bottom-line oriented business and not like a charity benefiting from tax breaks).  Encores charges $115 for all orchestra tickets and all the way back to the 12th row upstairs.  I'm not sure what standards anyone's asking should be applied to its shows other than what's applied to all NY theater.  If critics did that, who could believe the rapturous reviews like the ones Encores has already gotten earlier this season?  They as a series are not doing anything altruistic for the good of society other than what any non-profits like Roundabout or MTC or LCT or the Public do - and they are presenting entertainment just as any non-profit theater company that charges Broadway prices does.

Speaking of which, I went and celebrated with some sublime sashimi tonight. I was one happy boy.

And I ran into friends I hadn't seen in a few months, which proved to be great, because they were celebrating the birth of their first grandchild and honoring the memory of Sandy's mother, who passed away this week. I knew about the birth, not the death.

Weren't we all!

The critics re Irma are disgusting blaming the show.  It never occurs to these idiots than when a director like John Doyle is involved and maybe the casting is not spot on and maybe the choreography isn't up to snuff that THEY should be blamed.  It's like I've said forever - when people do Li'l Abner and the production is a big fail, everyone, rather than blame their ineptitude blames the show.  That's why I've wanted to do it so bad for so long.  There is NOTHING wrong with Abner just as there is nothing wrong with Irma in the right hands.

So, for the past 3 weeks or so, my mom and dad and I have been planning where we were going on Mother's day.  I asked my brother to see if they wanted to be included.  He said it sounded good until today when he basically took over the plans and said that they wanted to take mom and dad out to another place- that mom doesn't even like.  They do this to me every time we have plans for a holiday. And the changes are always last minute. I told him it was fine, but it really bugged me.

The more I thought about it the madder it made me. So I mowed the yard and vacuumed the house to burn up the energy.  Then I realize the easiest answer is for me to go tomorrow instead of Sunday.   The weather is better for travel tomorrow and it will give me Sunday to get my chores done before work on Monday. I really am fine with this.  I can have a nice day with mom and dad and my brother and his family can have a nice day with them and mom gets a two day mother's day.  Win. Win.

I stopped at the store today, an when I got out of the car I saw these huge black clouds coming in from the west.  I said to this woman also going into the store, that the rain would arrive about the time we finished shopping.  Sure enough, I finished shopping and almost got to the door when the whole sky ripped open.  I looked at it for a couple of minutes, turned around, and went to Starbuck's for a large coffee.

No.  I think she's written some stories, but she's never shared them with me.  My brother says she's really a pretty good writer.  She's studied the civil war for years.  She was an English teacher briefly and despite the fact she wishes I had never been born and used to remind me of that on a regular basis (apparently she won't now that she's 60, lol) I really think she may have a knack for writing and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I know, but since it's usually his wife or daughter that doesn't want to do what I want to do - not to be mean, they just have other ideas- it won't ever change.  It's just one of those things.

I'm glad I thought of a way around it. He has a lot on his plate.  His father in law is in a nursing home there and doesn't remember anything or anyone at this point.  He lives in the same town as my parents who call him three or four times a day either asking the same things or obsessing about things.  He's also a sole practitioner now that my dad has retired and he's a magistrate who the police wake up at all hours of the night to do search warrants etc.

I used to be so creative when I was younger.  Now I wish l could write a book or a play, but the well seems to be dry.

Just did my first serious attempt at creative writing to go with my thesis. I need more work at it. Much more work at it.

I think you also found a great way to deal with the situation :)

Perhaps not as creative as your solution.

Oh, and he's had several heart attacks, a quadruple by-pass and is just recovering from surgery on his right wrist and elbow to repair nerve issues he's had since the bypass.  He's got to do the other wrist and elbow next fall.   So, as mad as I get, I'd rather vent that another way and find a different solution.   So, I now have a yard mowed- and rain predicted the next two days, a house that has been vacuumed and the dishes are done.  I'm not mad anymore, lol

That's it!  I'll either exercise or clean every time my family irritates me.  I'll be skinny and have a clean house all the time!!!

I suppose, but he ends up cheating himself out of a day with you.

I'd say your acting is creative....it's still there

If I tell you some nasty things your family said, will you clean my house?

Ah,...We speak to each other several times a week and I see him fairly often.  We're really quite close.  He asked me to stop over at their house to see Dash (my grand nephew)  who will be at their house tomorrow.  I'll probably do that

That is true, but I used to have so many great ideas for plays and books, but now nothing.  I guess you are right though.

So why not write down some of the old ideas for plays and books and let them bounce around in your head....you never know what may happen

Watched the latest Mad Men.  Had to go buy some more Airborne.  I have been fighting majorly some guck for three damn weeks already - it's so annoying.  Just when I think I'm all done with it, back it comes - I think some of it is allergies, maybe all of it.
