Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pickled, and now it is time for you to post until the pickled cows come home.

Well, today is the day for the in-person interviews for the library selector.  We have two candidates.  I'm sure that either one would be very good.  They both have a lot of experience, AND the right kind of experience.  Also, when we did the Skype interviews, they both seemed like very nice people.  We'll see what happens! :D

Good morning, all! I have physical therapy in another hour, then I will return here, proofread all the essays going to New World Records, and then begin sending everything for the booklet to them.

DR Ben, I wasn't back on line last night to congratulate your 34th anniversary in Manhattan. We're lucky DC didn't lure you away.

DR vixmom, I should have added to my post that you're also a fantastic friend, one of the best!

I got much of my wished-for tidying accomplished over the weekend, but, unfortunately, where I had one pile of clutter I now have a lot of organized piles that need to go to their homes. I need to finish this up before I begin adding the clutter from Toyland that I'll be moving home soon.

I need a sherpa.

I need another cup of coffee, and then some ablutions and arse moving.

Got a few things that must be accomplished today -- notably, slaving over a hot keyboard, with breaks taken over a hot lawnmower and a hot weedwhacker.

I don't like pickles much, myself.  However, the DH does.  He likes full garlic dills. Back East, he used to love this brand particularly:

J.K. Rowling's second Cormoran Strike detective novel, The Silkworm, has been published.

Don't know if the first printings will go crazy in price like the first one did, since now the cat is out of the bag as to who "Robert Galbraith" is.
Title: Re: SWEET GHERKIN
Post by: Elan on June 30, 2014, 06:24:44 AM
Morning, all!

Etymological note of the day: the "h" in gherkin is a 19th century addition to the Dutch/German gurken, apparently thrown in to preserve the hard "g" sound (see also "ghost"). Why that's only found in a small handful of common English words ("ghetto" being the only other common word I can think of, and the h in that came through the Italian anyhow), I have no clew.

As for my favorite pickles, I'm with Singdaw's DH as far as mass-produced stuff goes. Back in the day, though, I used to pick up spicy pickles from Gus's on the Lower East Side, along with a large tub of jalapeno-stuffed olives. How my stomach lining doesn't look like Swiss cheese is anybody's guess.

As of the most recent list, it's #2 on the NY Times best seller list.

My Oma's homemade dill pickles will always be the best I've ever eaten, even better than my mother's, which are also wonderful.

I can eat most anything pickled, from brussels sprouts to carrots to green beans, and I usually have about 15 jars of everything from baby eggplants to roasted red peppers in jars in one of my two fridges. They make easy side dishes to get together for lunch work when I''m running late.

As for commercial brands, Gundelsheim seems to be the closest to my grandmother's.

TOD - the bread 'n' butter pickles that my mother used to make using a recipe from her friend Sue.  I have that recipe, in Sue's handwriting, and Richard and I have used it to make pickles several times.  We were just talking about making some after we get Rob and Mary Linda settled in.  Those pickles are great on burgers and meat loaf sandwiches!

TOD:

I really love some pickles and am "eh" about many others.

Sadly, I don't think I've ever had a homemade pickle in my life!  For store brands, I long ago gravitated to the Claussen type refrigerated ones for the most part.

Does "gherkins" refer to the dark sweet pickles?  Those were a childhood staple but I find them uninteresting now.  Same with regular old dill or "kosher dill", though I find dill chips are the proper thing for burgers.

Claussen's garlic slices are a favorite, for eating by themselves or adding to various cold cut sandwiches.

I'll buy any tub of half sours that looks like it'll live up to the kind of deli pickle I'm most crazy about (I do love it when you can tell they actually started life as a cucumber, and usually eat all of those out of the bowl at a deli before anyone else has a chance at them).

Pickle relish is something I tend to ignore, except in combination with other things to make a hot dog taste more like a Chicago dog.

Bread 'n' butter pickles have always been a special treat, going back to childhood, and I will gobble up any pile of those you set in front of me.  I'm not sure I even get around to adding them to anything.

Dill pickles.....most notably what is called locally Hamburger Dill Slices....sometimes they are cut lengthwise which makes them great for sandwiches.....I usually buy the Great Value store brand, but if there is a sale I get a national brand.....

I think Mom's bread and butter pickles are her best. They're a little sweet for me now that I'm diabetic, but I will break down every once in a while and have some. I need to make sure I have that recipe from her.

Simultaneously, I finished my 30-minute basement walk and listening to the audio version of THE BOOK THIEF.  It's one of those books that I'm not sure I'd have gotten through reading with my eyes, but the audio version kept my interest.  Now, I'm looking forward to discussing it and watching the movie with my book group in August.

Growing up every deli, that I went to, automatically put a dish of Kosher Dill Pickles on the table.  They were half New & half well done.  I learned early on to ask for all New pickles.  This was the same as we moved around the country, if there was a deli.  In a couple of states we lived in there were specialty markets that had big barrels of Kosher Dills where I could pick out a nice big New pickle-yum.

In recent years I often have to ask for pickles and even worse, they don't have or know what a New pickle is.  Thank you DR Chas for explaining that a Half Sour is the same as a New pickle.  Maybe that will help in the future.  Even in LA it seems I have to go to Nate 'B Al's to find one.

And I am home from therapy. Morgan has given me a new, particularly painful stretching exercise for my ankles. I think I will rake a nap and get to work.

My mother's sister Lois made a very sweet pickle, which was okay, but I prefer dill. My dad's mother in Appalachia pickled eggs, which terrified me, beans and corn, which I loved.

I am now off the take some STEEL MAGNOLIAS publicity photos so that we can meet the deadlines of the weekly print papers.

I will also finish taking the portraits so that I can get the lobby slide show done....and I will probably also do the lobby display case while I'm at it.

Hey, Jack, how are the plans going to revive Walking Happy? Ben and I have started a campaign.

Very pretty.

I found more photos of the Faroe Islands and emailed to Keith saying I want to go there.  I guess he liked the photos too as he researched how to get there.  I doubt it will ever happen but it was interesting reading a little bit about the islands.

So, when you accept a "friend" request on Facebook the default is you're FOLLOWING them???  No wonder I see all this crap on my newsfeed that makes me NEVER want to go to Facebook.  Now I'm going to systematically unfollow everyone but a handful of folks.  One guy who I recently accepted does nothing but post obnoxious stories (you know the kind - "You won't believe what happened next") from The Blaze - I just unfollowed him, but I'll also probably unfriend him, too.

Is this why I keep seeing conversations my friends have with other people or groups?

I thought the "follow" option made it possible to follow people you aren't friends with, it the person permits following.  I don't think I do.  I will have to double check that.

I think this following thing is new.  I don't think you can follow people you are not friends with accept authors or people like that.

A-a-a-and, now we're goint to paint our bedroom.  Richard cleared out his "library" corner today to make room for the bookcases that came from upstairs and decided he wants to paint before putting it back together.  We'll do it one wall at at time, hoping to be able to continue to use the room as we go.  I've ordered new draperies that should come next week and we're off to Home Depot tomorrow for painting supplies and gear.  It's getting more like HGTV here every day...

Well, that was NOT an easy decision to make.  Both candidates gave very good interviews.  They both had their strengths and weaknesses.  It was very balanced.  One would have one experience, but not another.  The other would have the other experience, but not the one.  Afterward, we on the hiring committee talked about how well each would fit in with our "culture" and we all felt that either would fit in very well.    But a decision was made.  I don't doubt that that candidate will accept (it's happened before...more than once...where someone was offered a position and then didn't accept).  Anyway, it's over and I'm glad.  But it was interesting to be involved in the process. :)

Elmore's comment on pickled eggs reminded me of pickled beets, which I love. Eggs, not so much. And I've never tried pickled pig's feet. But I remember a bar in Middletown, Ohio, that had both in jars on the counter. One was pickled eggs in beet juice and the other had pig's feet. I don't remember the name, but it was something like the Baltimore.

At my parents' anniversary get-together at the restaurant, my mom said that she LOVES pickled pig's feet...but only homemade, not store-bought.  I remember her having some when I was growing up (I don't know if she actually made it, but she had some).

I love  me some sweet gherkins   Vlasic and Mt Olive  being my two brands of choice

My Hungarian  Papa made  the best bread and butter pickles ever  I  unfortunately  never thought to get the recipe

The Vixter is a dill pickle fan  and  has been since she was 18 months old and started stealing them off her Papa's lunch plate

I like a dill pickle with a hamburger   NOT ON the burger though... along side,   for a nibble here and there, just like the side of coleslaw

one of the best things about diners   when you order your burgers they bring a big dish  with  a bowl of coleslaw and a bowls of pickles

They've been having server issues for two days - I've asked them to please just get it fixed once and for all.

Pickled beats + cottage cheese = one of my favorite sides

Sliced tomatoes + cottage cheese = one of my favorite snacks

Oh Hell, cottage cheese + cottage cheese is also great

I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of cottage cheese.  I just don't like the texture.  My sister used to make lasagna with cottage cheese and the rest of the recipe was good (I'd made it with ricotta and it was delish), but with cottage cheese, it's just wrong. :P

Topic of the Day:

I don't have any brand loyalty or preference, but I like bread and butter pickles, dill pickles and sweet pickles (those are actually the only kinds that I know the name of).  I also like pickle spears (whatever kind they supply) with burgers or sandwiches, but only a couple of restaurants in this area include those.
