Well, you've read the notes, you've pontificated on the notes, the notes have pontificated on you, and now it is time to post until the cows, in all their splendor, come home.

Me first!  Me first!

2 ½ SPLENDIFEROUS VIBES TO MR. GRANT GEISSMAN!

Up early for my weekly shopping before there are lines at the Stop 'n' Shop.  Angel Jim's son will be over this morning to mow our lawn, since our DR gear shift conked out this summer.

Ave atque vale omnis!

Yesterday, Panni said her cheerleading outfit was at the cleaners and asks "What should I do?"

Answer: Find new cleaners.  The ones you have are taking far too long!

Good advice, Noel!

A quick shower and I'm off the help out with the 5 K Walk to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research. They've given us rather unattractive (and potentially HOT - not sexy, but heavy) teal shirts to wear. But it's for a good cause, so off I go. Will report later. (I'm also going to a memorial service at the DGA this morning - so I'm not sure if I'll have time to check in between the two events.)

Where in tarnation is everyone?

We saw LA BOHEME at City Opera last night:

Take a woman born in Chili and a man born in Cuba, let them play impoverished French lovers but sing in Italian, put it all on a stage in New York City and you have Opera.

The singing was excellent, the staging was fine... the only thing I can say negative is that as good as the Mimi was, she was the typical opera singer and in her last act nightgown she looked like Tracy Turnblad, not a woman on the brink of death.

Off to Jersey to see OF THEE I SING.

Well, I'm up at seven-thirty.  I've been up since seven.  So much on my mind.  So much still to do.  Now, where in tarnation IS everyone?  You'd think this was a Sunday morning or something.

Sad about Fred Ebb. He certainly has contributed some wonderful lyrics to the Broadway stage, and his passing will certainly leave a void.

I guess CABARET will be his monument followed by CHICAGO, but I really love THE HAPPY TIME and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN.

Wonder if we'll see some productions of THE VISIT and OVER AND OVER (is that the name of their musical version of Wilder's play?)

Now that I have rehearsals in the evenings, my TV watching will be curtailed for awhile. Tonight I'll have to DVR the season finale of SIX FEET UNDER, for example.

Okay...okay....hmmmmmmmmmm

Great BK Picture, DRMICHAEL SHAYNE.  And all the DR's should visit the Bruce Kimmel site if they haven't done so lately....new DR's and lurkers should especially check it out.

http://www.brucekimmel.com/ (http://www.brucekimmel.com/)

Sunday....Panni is running....MR BK is moving.  DRLAURA is sending me a surprise!  ;D

Our show went well last night, too!  Great audience and great fun to be in a hit show....and doing comedy.

DRMATTH now that you mention it, my first color television was a Panasonic and it lasted for YEARS!!  So I have good feelings about my new Panasonic DVD player.  So far, so good!

Remember the RCA color TV ads?  The little cartoon guy would jump in the air and say:  "Wow! I've seen color tv!  RCA Victor color TV!!"  It was so cute.  So we immediately went out and bought a color tv - from Sears - so we could watch BONANZA!

MR BK - is your new house a "ranch" style or does it have more than one level?   Are you changing house styles, that is going from multi to single level or vice versa?  Do you or any of the DR's have a preference?

We lived in many houses when I was growing up and most of them had two stories.....but now I have lived in a "ranch" style house for nearly 35 years, and I love it!

Mr. Ebb, while not always brilliant in later years, was a class act - his lyrics for Cabaret are perfection.

Now, might I ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  I still haven't been able to score the Alias box set - and now it will probably have to wait until after the move.

I don't know that I've ever seen just ten posts by eight-eighteen.

Now, what are our favorite Ebb lyrics?  I love:

"For the sun will rise, and the moon will set,
And you learn how to settle for what you get,
It will all go on if we're here or not
So, who cares?  So what?"

I love so much of Mr. Ebb's work - and his words play directly to emotions...but a sweet song that works perfectly in its place and is charming as well.....It Couldn't Please Me More from CABARET.

"Everybody loves a winner
So nobody loved me.
'Lady Peaceful' 'Lady Happy'
That's what I longed to be.
All the odds are in my favor.
Something's bound to begin.
It's gotta happen, happen sometime.
Maybe this time, I'll win!"

Any lyricist who can be hopeful AND defeatist in the same song - oh heck in the SAME line - knows how to write for a character!  And Liza Minnelli sang this song for all it was worth, wrapped it up and put it to bed!

Wonder if we'll see some productions of THE VISIT and OVER AND OVER (is that the name of their musical version of Wilder's play?)

Indeed it is was.

NYPL (http://www.nypl.org/press/kanderebb.cfm) reports:

Quote
Recently Kander and Ebb contributed to a new musical, Curtains, and have worked on regional tryouts of Over & Over (an adaptation of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth) and The Visit (Terrence McNally's adaptation of the play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt).

 Playbill (http://web.playbill.com/news/article/77719.html) comments:

Kander and Ebb's Skin of Our Teeth Musical Looking for Regional Production
By Robert Simonson
February 6, 2003
Skin of Our Teeth, the John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joseph Stein musical based on Thornton Wilder's play about the indomitability of mankind, is casting about for a staging somewhere outside New York."We just finished a revision and demo on it," Kander told Playbill On-Line Feb. 5. "We need to have a regional production."

The musical, once titled Over & Over, got off to a rocky start with a 1999 Signature Theatre staging in Arlington, VA. (Among other things, star Bebe Neuwirth abruptly quit the show and was replaced by Sherie René Scott.) The writers went back to the drawing board and in spring 2002 presented a Barre-directed reading at Manhattan Theatre Club. "We were all very happy with the reading," Stein previously told Playbill On-Line.
"We changed the name to something very original," Stein quipped. "We call it Skin of Our Teeth, the Musical, without the original 'the.' People say that's what [the show] is anyway, so I said, 'The hell with it!'

"The Virginia version was — I hate to use the word 'fiasco' — but I think it was badly mishandled," Stein said. "Characters were added which I felt were unnecessary. It just didn't work properly, but we saw what was wrong, and I think we fixed it."
A character, Lulu Shriner, was added to the story in Virginia, where Dorothy Loudon played her. She does not figure into the rewrite.

Over & Over had a reading in spring 1998 in New York City under Schaeffer's direction, with Michele Pawk as Sabina. Bernadette Peters played Sabina in an earlier reading, not associated with Signature.

I'll always love "Sometimes a Day Goes By" from Woman of the Year, and the medley version on "The World Goes 'Round."

Cabaret is wonderful, but I personally believe it can only be truly appreciated in the original Hebrew  ;D (There are few things more surreal than the last lyric of "If you could see her through my eyes" in Hebrew, unless it's looking at the CD of the Israeli cast and realizing that you're in possession of a Japanese import of an Israeli recording of an American musical set in Germany... how's that for intercontinental culture?)

JRand-a hit show, how exciting.

I have always been fond of two story houses, now I like one level with open spaces. I have never been a big fan of ranch style houses.  Our second home in Michigan was one, very Californian with a pool in the back yard.  Eastern like it had a beautifully finished full basement.  I liked that home very much.

I shall be on my way to the theater soon, but I don't see anyone to keep the home fries burning.  However, it would be most unseemly, in my opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo), to let the home fries go out.  There is a chance I'll be staying after the show to begin rehearsing the new number - if so, I won't be here for the beginning of chat, but don't let that stop you from beginning a lively and sparkling chat without me.

Congratulations on the success, JRand!!

I've lived in a few multi-story apartments, but as far as houses, I've only lived in two single-story houses (my parents' and the one I'm living in now, which I'm renting from my sister).  I don't know if I really have a preference.  Just as long as I can fit in all my stuff (and I have a lot...and have a hard time letting go), I'm fine.

I went to the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum last night, Dear Readers, to see Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine.

Attending theatre at the WGTB is always a pleasure and a bit of an adventure.  It is located in Topanga, high up in the hills, with the western San Fernando Valley about six miles to the north, and Malibu and the Pacific Ocean about six miles to the south.  It is as rural an area as one might find in Los Angeles County.  Hilly, heavily wooded and sparsely developed, the character of the Topanga area has always been one of independence, with hints of funkiness and counter-culture evident.

Will Geer established the WGTB as an outlet for him and his fellow black-listed members of the theatre/film community to practice their art.  They do four plays each summer season, usually one or two Shakespeare plays and two or three classic plays, be they antique or of more modern vintage.  Various musical events (including an annual Woody Guthrie hootenany) and children's activities are held there, too.

The theatre at the WGTB is outdoors, in a sylvan setting.  A semi-circular amphitheatre with wooden bench seats rises from the stage.  The box office, snack stand, dressing rooms and other outbuildings are all in wooden shacks that remind me of the outbuildings typical at the summer camps I went to in my younger days.  The people who run the place are all very laid back and pleasant.  If one chooses to park in the small parking lot at the WGTB (most people park alongside the road), there's a three dollar charge collected on the honor system in a basket hanging on the gate by the path to the theatre.  It's easy to forget that you are only fifty miles from downtown Los Angeles at the WGTB.

Watch on the Rhine was written in 1940 to encourage the United States' entry into the war then raging in Europe, and some have pigeon-holed the play as a pro-war polemic.  The excellent performance last night led me, instead, to the conclusion that what the play is really about is our--by "our" I mean individually, and collectively, as a nation--utmost need to steer clear of complacency about social issues of great import.  The family depicted in the play is initially shown as rather ignorant and self-centered.  By its conclusion, after the family has had its eyes opened to the lengths to which people will fight against--and for--the fascist movement in Europe, the usually scatter-brained matriarch of the family, warmly played by Ellen Geer, wisely says, "We are shaken out of the magnolias, eh?"

I'm still hacking away with my chest cold, which has been going on long enough that my lungs feel bruised.  So does my head, on the inside.  Bleh.

Der Brucer is off to the hardware store, checking on fencing materials.  With any luck, we'll get a new doggy door installed in the kitchen door, with an enclosure running down along the side of the house and connecting with the downstairs yard we've already had set up for the pack.  Now, instead of wiping off their muddy feet on the basement floor before charging up, the dogs will be able to come directly into the kitchen and leave paw prints in my cooking area!  Isn't that going to be special!

Wow, not many posts today.

Still waiting on good ol'Ivan to make up his mind where he wants to go.  I don't know if I'm to go to work or not.

I went out for a little while and bought a couple DVD's The Mark Of Zorro with Tyrone Power and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir one of my all time favorites.

Good new house vibes to Bruce.  Are you going to have a house warming party?  And what about "Singing Bird"?  Are you going to leave a trail for him/her to follow you to the new abode?

Yesterday, der Brucer and I were listening to Dawn Upshaw's Vernon Duke album.  Some of it is quite good, and some...well, she has a great voice, but not a varied one.

I came to the decision that Dawn Upshaw's singing is best discribed as languorous.  It reminds me of those photographs of women from the late 1940's, who would be supine on chiase lounges, dressed in chiffon nightgowns with matching chapeaus.

Where is Danny Kaye's Anatoile when you need him?

Oh...thanks for the congrats, everyone!  And we get to do the show four more times!

I THINK a ranch house is a one story house - and it usually has a certain type of window....casement sliding...rather than the colonial raise and lower....but I have been wrong before.

You know, the more I watch HERE'S LUCY, the more I see Lucie Arnaz in what Debra Messing is doing on W/G - stopped watching some time ago, but am subjected to her in endless reruns while clicking around the dial or waiting for a GOOD show to come on.

Lucie herself (at least in HERE'S LUCY - I like her on the PLAYING OUR SONG album & I saw her with Tommy Tune in SEESAW and she was good) displays the hubris and high school type of performing that suggests she thinks she is on the show because of her ability and NOT her mother....but she was wrong!  Her song and dance sequences (she sings with Wayne Newton at one point and dances with Ginger Rogers!) suggest more confidence than actual talent, she pretends to be in on the jokes....but the joke is on her.  My...I guess I just dissed her....but then, I have seen the shows.

Anyway - heading into Sunday evening and hope to be at the chat!

Later in the morning I went to the most wonderful memorial service.  I'll post about it later.

I'll start a topic. What emerged as the main theme of the Memorial Service celebrating the life of Dan Petrie, Sr. was that here was a man who mattered in the world. He mattered in his work, he mattered to his family, he mattered to everyone he met. He truly touched the lives of the people with whom he came in contact. So my question is... In what way (so far) do you think you have "changed" the world? And by changed, I don't mean discovering the cure for cancer. It can be as simple (not that it's simple) as making your partner happy or as complicated as... Whatever. How about some posts on the topic?

Gee, JRand, I don't remember what was on when it was connected.  Just the reason why we got it so it must have been around Christmas.

I'm having fun with B&B right now.  Bear won't move from next to me.  I'm trying to give some goodies to Brandi (Bear get's more then his fair share, trust me) so I put the goodies on Bears side and Brandi is using him as a "table".  Lot's of crumbs.   :D

Kiefer Sutherland made an extremely heartfelt speech at the memorial about something that Dan Petrie had said to him when he was 16 -- and how that changed his life. He said - and he started to cry - that he was truly sorry he didn't have the chance to tell Petrie that while he was still alive.
I wonder how many of us have impacted lives we are unaware of? Or have had our lives changed by someone who doesn't know the difference he or she has made?

Sidney Poitier said the same kind of thing - except that went back 40 years - and I think he had a chance to tell Dan Petrie. I spoke with Sutherland and Mr. Poitier briefly after the Memorial and both men were very humble and nice (I can't think of a better word - sorry.)

Great topic/question DR Panni.
As with a few other DRs - Teaching has meant a great deal in terms of satisfaction in that is a hope that you really have made a difference- often the feedback is many years later with that chance meeting with an ex-student.

I hope that if I have made a difference it is because of a lesson from my mother - listening often gives far more to a friend than talking. Loyal friendship really makes a difference in this world.  At times I have "reached out" to people I have met on this site - this has made a difference in how I have coped with other situations in my life.

I knew Dan Petrie fairly well, and thank you for reporting on the memorial.

I never met Fred Ebb, but this year I had the chance to play my favorite Kander & Ebb song in a cabaret, Why Should I Wake Up?  The highlight of the year was working with John Kander and a wonderful young singer on their song, Colored Lights.

Just off the top of my head, Kander & Ebb songs I'm especially fond of include
Walking Among My Yesterdays
I Don't Remember You
A Quiet Thing
My Own Space
The Only Game In Town
everything in Cabaret and Chicago
My Coloring Book
Sara Lee
and, for some reason, for days now, I've been humming one of their death songs, Happy Birthday To Me

LOL... thanks Danise and Jane for giving good wishes to my aunt in Mobile.

It's strange to think though that the storm is just a little more than 5 days from actually reaching land and yet we are hearing so much about it!

The newscasts make it seem much closer than it actually is...

I'm sure my aunt will be fine - what sucks is that the science museum she's the exec. director for in Mobile is supposed to be holding a major fundraiser this coming weekend...

OOPS ;)

I have a not-so-serious answer to Panni's query.

A year ago, I took a job teaching at a college in New Jersey, a state I've long avoided.  I didn't know what I would find, or, really, what I would teach.  I encouraged these Jerseyans to be themselves, to follow their dreams, to not be afraid of being who they are, to not be crippled by potential embarrassment.

The next thing I knew, the Governor of New Jersey came out of the closet.

Mr Ebb's  lyrics would quite possibly the most played in this house - surprisingly perhaps more than Mr Sondheim's.
"A Quiet Thing" is my favourite. There will be less "Colored Lights" in the theatre now.

Several years ago, I used to be part of a singing workshop.  We all picked songs and our instructor, Mark Anton, would critique us and help us perform the song...coach us, not so much "singing lessons."  Anyway, I had the "And the World Goes 'Round" songbook, and loved the duet "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By."  The songbook does not have the duet arrangement that is in the show, but I transcribed the melody lines from the recording and our pianist Eric and Claudia, another person in the group figured out the piano chords for one spot that I coulnd't figure out and it all fit together.  This other woman Judy sang "Sometimes a Day Goes By" and I did "I Don't Remember You" for a performance and we had a great time.  A lot of people came up to us afterwards asking about the songs and who wrote them.  That was one of the best performances I ever gave.  I love those songs and that duet arrangement.

Houses: This is the country where house ownership is supposedly the norm. It is not a land of apartment blocks etc. The great Australian Dream is "home ownership".

I may return with some "house songs".

Another experience with a Kander/Ebb song:  I was working with a wonderful jazz pianist Joe Baque (I think he was 79 at the time; he's now 82 and still going strong) and I wanted to put two songs together.  I knew he knew "When I Fall In Love" so I didn't have to get that music.  But I wanted to pair it with "A Quiet Thing" (they have similar starting lines...both start at low notes, similar styles, etc.).  Anyway, I got Joe the music for "A Quiet Thing" and wanted the two songs to start on the same note, even though they have totally different key relationships, but Joe was able to improvise a bridge between the two songs to have the first notes of each song be the same starting note (in different keys).  He did it fabulously!  He loved "A Quiet Thing," which he had never heard, and thought the idea of pairing the two songs was a great idea...which it was, if I do say so myself. ;D

Noel - The turnout for the memorial was huge. The DGA theater was filled almost to capacity. The film clips were masterfully edited and presented. And the speakers - including Jane Alexander, Michael Apted, Fay Kanin, Gil Cates, Donald and Dan Petrie, Jr., Sutherland and Poitier -  were all excellent. There was even a member of the Canadian Senate from Nova Scotia. Before Poitier came on, the scene from RAISIN in which he decides to move into the house was shown. Boy, is that powerful!
Dan Jr. told a great story about coming to his father after getting his first directing gig.
"What's the most important bit of advice, dad?"
The answer: "Get a flu shot."
Someone else told the story of a nervous Petrie Sr. wondering how he could ever tell Laurence Olivier how to act. He solved the problem by walking up to Olivier on the first day of production and saying, "I want to get one thing straight before we get started. There's only one person in charge here. ...And that's you."
Olivier roared with laughter and there wasn't a moment's problem after that.

As much as I liked Fred Ebb's work and his second class work was better than most of the contemporary work being shown in the theater today.

I lost respect for Mr. Ebb as a lyricist, a man of the theater and as a gay person when he voiced his opnion about Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman kissing on the Tony Award awards after winning for best score for Hairspray. Instead of criticizing he should have celebrated that Shaiman and Whitman were able to do when Ebb could never have done it even in 1992 when he wrote a gay themed musical Kiss of the Spiderwoman and won a Tony Award for it.

He said

"I thought they made spectacle of themselves, frankly. I thought it was dumb. "

Fred Ebb -- one half of the famed Broadway musical team Kander and Ebb -- is grousing about the big smooch that songwriting team (and lifelong partners) Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman planted on each other on national television after they won a Tony for Hairspray.

I thought they made spectacle of themselves, frankly. I thought it was dumb. " Ebb complained to interviewer Randy Shulman. "Your bedroom is not the screen, " he says. "And it is also not the stage. Say ‘Thank you’ to the people who helped you get where you are, ‘thank you’ to the source material, ‘thank you’ to the players and sit down. " Nobody has any right to intrude his private life on a mass audience, " he grumbles. "It is intrusive. "

Instead, Ebb asserts, any statement that he and Kander wish to make about homosexuality has been made through their songs. But then Ebb takes a sudden turn and brings up his Kiss of the Spider Woman, a musical that dealt very directly with a love between men.

"That’s how you make a statement, " he says. "That’s how you raise a flag. Through your art. I don’t have to do it through my mouth in front of millions of people and make myself look like an idiot.

Ebb should have complained when hetrosexual couples kissed on screen.

PS John Kander also refuses to talk his sexuality.

I agree with you, DR George, about that marvelous duet in AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND of "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By." I got to sing the latter song when I performed the show, and I never actually realized how beautifully those songs were fit together by the arranger until I watched and listened to a videotape made of our last performance. Quite marvelous arrangement. Of course, the "Cabaret" arrangement was also especially unique and also a tremendous amount of fun to sing during `the show.

You've been very busy, bk, because the closing date for THE BOY FROM OZ was announced quite a few months ago. It's been a beautiful weekend (80+ degrees (F)), and I just returned from a weekend away (Lake Huron area, a bit west of Stratford, Ont.).

I watched an unusual double bill. Tiger Cruise, and George White's Scandals. I was extremely taken with the former - a strong story that holds one's interest and moves at a good pace; interesting characters of different generations, who interact well; believable dialogue; and some nice touches of humor. It covers several important issues in an honest way, and I think it's a great movie for a family to watch together.

After my parents and company left, my sister, niece, sister's boyfriend and I went to a pizza place for dinner.  I had a small pizza with a garlic crust, alfredo sauce, pepperoni and pineapple.  Pretty darn good!  I ate six of the eight slices and will probably have the last two for dinner tomorrow (lunch time will be at Taco Del Mar...double punch Monday, you know!)  Then I helped move some boxes of unassembled shelves from my niece's truck into my sister's garage, then came home.  Now I'm here trying to make up for not being at chat...I always feel like I'm missing out on something.  Oh, well! ::)

George I found a definition of a ranch house-typically having one story, a spread-out floor plan, and a roof that is not steeply pitched.

Thanks for the info!  Based on that description, I think that my parent's house might be considered a ranch style...or not.  The house I'm living in (renting from my sister) is definitely not a ranch house.  It's a rectangle and not spread out at all.  Everything's all bunched up together, and it only has one bathroom.  I hate that part.  But at least there are only two people living here now.  When I lived with my sister and niece in this house (before she built her new house) we had THREE people sharing one bathroom.  Not convienient. ::)

I can't believe it! I was more tired than I realized. A long day - starting at 4 AM. I fell asleep in the middle of the season's finale of SIX FEET UNDER. I woke up in the middle of the solution of the season't mystery - but too late to hear most of it. Oh well.

The Chabad telethon is on! Nothing like seeing Jon Voight dancing with the guys whenever the Tote Board is revealed with a new sum.

The second episode of Series 4 of Six Feet is on here tonight. Not sure if I shall stay awake to watch it thought. I certainly won't be watching it tomorrow.

Feel free to discuss the series at length for the next five weeks - I don't think I'll be catching up on ALL the posts when I return.

I think I am finally finished packing. But then I've thought that before! Four novels to read - that should get me to Hong Kong.
"What do we do?  We fly". Love those lyrics from DIHAW. 26 hours in the air! Really looking forward to that. (I hope of course we do stay in the air).

I wonder if I will have major withdrawal problems for the next few mornings with no HHW.
For most of the time I shall be staying in villages that have few inhabitants and certainly no internet cafes.

Good Evening!

Sorry to have been errant and truant for the past 36 hours or so...  During last night's show (Saturday, that is), I started feeling "not so good".  I could just feel my sinuses starting to fill up, my muscles were getting a little achy, etc.  So, when I got home after the show, I basically went right to bed.  When I got up today (Sunday), I was still feeling a bit "not so good".  Thankfully, on the way to the show, I could literally feel my head starting to open up sinus-ly speaking, and by the end of the show, I was actually feeling pretty much back to normal.  And right now, I'm feeling pretty good.  I'm guessing it was just "stuff" - plus all the changing barometric readings the past couple of days.  I tend to always have some sort of sinus-stuff going on (unfortunately), and whenever the air pressure starts changing, it usually does some sort of number on my head and body.  So... That's my personal health report for the day.

If they have no internet then it surely must be the Villages of the Damned.

On my Metro ride home today, I noticed an elderly man talking with a group of women - apparently a grandmother, a mother and a daughter (grand-daughter).  I was waiting on the platform at the Hollywood and Vine stop, and they had just gotten off the train that was heading to North Hollywood.  After watching them for a few minutes, it appeared that the elderly man was a bit lost, and was trying to figure out how to get home.  The women kept trying to help him, but there also seemed to be a language barrier - or so I thought.  The elderly man eventually pulled out his I.D. card, and showed the women his address.  They instructed him to get on the train going back to Union Station, and get off at the Vermont-Santa Monica stop.  Well...

The train comes by and the man gets on the train.  So do I since I had to head to Union Station too.  Well... The man starts asking some people on the train how to get "home".  I eventually made my way to him and asked if he needed any help.  "I need to get to Romaine... Santa Monica... Hollywood... Vermont... Wilshire..."  I started pointing to the Metro map to see if any of the stop names sounded familiar.  He wasn't sure - just kept looking at me with a very questioning face.  He then pulled out his I.D. card to show me his address.  Unfortunately, I had no idea where Romaine Dr. was/is, but he did say he was off of Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.  Well, he was going the wrong way then.  Almost.  I told him to get off at the Vermont-Santa Monica station - as the ladies had instructed him before - and to take the number 4 bus back to Hollywood.

After some more chatting and questioning, he eventually started pointing to his head.  "My memory is not so good... Sorry."  No problem.  I asked him a few more questions just to make sure he would be getting off at the correct stop.  "I'm in the building... By the artists... The Artists..."  I still was not sure what he was talking about.  There was another young man listening in on all of this, and he kept giving me a blank look too.

"Thank you... My memory... And I have been drinking... Makes me forget... I should not do that..."

My heart sank.

Well, the train gets to the Vermont-Santa Monica station, and I motion to man to get off the train, and to head upstairs.  Thankfully, the train stayed a bit longer in the station than usual, and I was able to see the man get on the escalator up to the street level.

Of course, as the train pulled away, I wished I had gotten off the train with him...

Once I got back to Pasadena, I decided to have dinner at the Mexican place I've been frequenting.  And since it was Sunday, I had menudo.  Pretty good.  And I picked a piece of budin - a kind of walnut and raisin coffee cake - on my way out to eat while I was walking up to the main drag in Old Pasadena.

Once in Old Pasadena, I decided to see a movie.

 :-\

'Nuff said.  UGH!

After the movie, I stopped by the gelato place across from the theatre, and got a small cup with half limoncello and half blueberry/cabernet sauvignon.  Yummy!  And very refreshing.  -And, trust me, after the movie I saw, I needed something refreshing.

Then it was a short bus ride back to the homestead...  And I think I witnessed one of the laziest people ever.  This woman got on the bus, and then got off two stops later.  A total of four blocks!?!?!?  -And as she was getting on the bus, she remarked to bus driver how he was running ten minues late?!?!?!?  Four blocks... ten minutes...

So... Now I'm back here, on-line, checking e-mail... and now it's time for me to catch up on the posts from yesterday and today that I have yet to read.... ;)

Laters... -I'll probably be back "tomorrow".

I'm pleased to know that "kindness to strangers" is still a working philosophy in today's hurried world.

Oh, and it may have been mentioned previously in today's posts, but so sad to hear about the passing of Fred Ebb.

He will be missed.  Thankfully, his lyrics will continue to live on.

Things could be much worse DR Jose. You could have been at the opera. But then again you have at least some of the necessary genes.

Well, if you happen to come across some exquisite and special chocolates, you know where to send them! ;)

And if you happen to come across Johnny Depp, you know where to send him!  :D

Funny that you should mention that...  One thing I have noticed out here - at least in the land of the Metro and bus system - is that people do seem to help more often that I thought they would/could.  I guess that since the Metro system out here is still relatively new - less than 15 years (and the Gold Line is only about two years old, if even that) - the people riding the system on a day to day basis know the system.  And they also know that there are no attendants or help desks at the stations - which is the big deficiency with the system, imho.  *Sometimes you do hear the "voice of Metro" telling someone to "Please, back away from the platform", but you never see that "voice".  So, I think the lack of Metro employees has more or less prompted the daily riders to come to the aid of "new riders" - since the "old riders" most likely had to fend for themselves when they started riding.

And I think I mentioned it before, but I've also come across some "regulars" who really do know the bus routes - schedules, routes and all.  Sometimes someone will board a bus, and ask the driver if the bus stops at a particular place.  Most of the time, one of the passengers ends up speaking up and giving the questioning rider the proper directions.
