Well, you've read the notes, the notes had substance and abuse, and now it is time for you to post until the abused cows come home.

Good morning, all! Even though the company that deducted the  $480+ on my debit card yesterday told me they were issuing credit, it did not land in my bank account today.  As a consequence, I will go over to my bank this morning, and file a complaint.

This affects my day and my intended schedule, I regret to say, and it really really really burns my ass. I'm wasting my time chasing my tail, thanks to these scumbags, and I am unable to see beyond it at this point.

Long day ahead. Volunteer training for the new theater in town, which will take a few hours. Then I'm taking friends out for their 61st anniversary tonight. We'd had lunch earlier this week, as part of the local Restaurant Week and they want to head out to a different place for dinner. It should be fun.

And the claim has been filed. I think what irritates me the most is the bank's decision yesterday to go ahead and allow the pending charges to go through. Rather than protect me and the limited funds in the account, the bank, after all of my communication between 8:00 amd 11:00am yesterday and canceling my debit card, still allowed two large fraudulent charges to be posted to my account this morning. Also, why did the damned bank, after seeing I was $200 overdrawn on one charge permit a second to go through without contacting me to verify this was a charge I'd authorized?

It seems to me they should have denied the charges and let the vendor, who clearly will ship these orders to some other address than mine, fight the addressee for the money owed them. It's all too fucked up when it should be simpler. I hate that I am the one caught trying to defend myself with little help from the bank. I have to rethink my banking options after this mess.lso, why did the damned bank, after seeing I was $200 overdrawn on one charge permit a second to go through without contacting me or verifying this was a real charge from me?

It's infuriating.  I found out several years ago, when I simply THOUGHT I'd lost my wallet, that debit cards are not protected the same way credit cards are.  I, too, sat in front of a bank person (and this was after the crisis had passed) and was amazed at what they're not equipped to do, and -- by law -- are not even required to do in the way of consumer protection coming first and speedily.  Credit cards, you just give them a call (and they're very good at catching fraud themselves these days) and they take care of it.  Not so with debit cards which, though used in the same way, are treated completely differently.  We can probably thank our Lawgivers for this.

Actors Federal Credit Union (http://actorsfcu.com/)

might be something to look into. You don't have to be an actor, you just have to be in the performing arts, including music.

Unfortunately, they are not at all convienent, location-wise. The home branch is in the Actors Equity Building

Main Office — New York City

165 West 46th Street, 14th floor
New York, NY  10036
Monday – Friday
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
New Accounts:    9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

and they have another branch at the Musicians Union

Musicians Local 802 Branch Office
New York City

322 West 48th Street, 4th floor
New York, NY 10036
Monday – Friday
9:30 AM – 5:00 PM
New Accounts:    10:30 AM – 4:30 PM

We have had accounts with AFCU for years and they are friendly, helpful and small enough to care about their customers. If AFCU doesn't work, perhaps some other credit union in your neighborhood might be a good choice.

I hope you get this all sorted out. But it makes no sense that they would allow charges to go through after you already alerted them that there was a problem.  They definitely should have protected you.

I remember on one of the times my Paypal debit card was compromised that I railed about them letting the charges go through when they could have stopped them.  That company said they have to do it in order to be able to actually chase the crooks.  But the problem is, they don't chase the crooks - neither them nor the company's that were defrauded - it's not worth their time and that's why this continues.  With me, they knew the store and they had the perpetrator on camera and they still didn't care and a police report couldn't even be filed in that city - I had to file it here.  It was insanity and these jerk cretin crooks know it.

Not if you're using it for a credit instead of a debit transaction.  Providing it's a debit/credit card.  When someone gets the info on your card (which I think is what happened to BK, at a restaurant?), they can start charging it up.

Good morning, all.

I am here to announce that while at Costco yesterday, I saw a "deal" on a package of two pillows of the memory foam variety for ten bucks, and I bought them.  My head and neck LOVED them, and while it may be purely coincidental, even my back felt better this morning.  So, we'll see.  We shall see.

Congrats on finding a pillow that you love, ChasSmith!  Years ago, my sister bought a memory foam pillow and didn't like it.  I tried it and didn't like it either because when I lay my head on it, the pillow completely flattened!  There was absolutely NO support...it was just like lying on a bed with no pillow.  She then bought another kind of foam pillow, much firmer and not "memory" foam, and it was too firm for her.  I tried it and I loved it!  I've have it for years and the support for me is perfect.  I really should get a new one because it's so old, but the problem is that my sister doesn't remember where she got it, and I really haven't been able to find anything else like it on-line, so I don't know if I'll be able to get another one even remotely like it. :P

I suppose I could try the Costco memory foam pillow.  A lot has changed over the years and maybe these now have enough support for my head.  $10 is certainly not expensive at all.

Post by: George on August 23, 2014, 01:04:12 PM
Well, I must be off.  I have to take a shower, get dressed, then go to my sister's to help her with some stuff.  But before I go over there, she wants me to go to Fred Meyer for some cat food.  It's right next to Costco, so I may also see if they have the memory pillows.  I might (mind you, I said "might") try them out...but I probably will.  After I'm finished at my sister's, I have to feed my friend's cats and go to the theater.  I'm going to drive my friend's van to the theater because right after the show, I have to leave to pick up her and her two daughters from the airport.  They all went down to California to bring her middle daughter to USC.  It's going to be a long day.

Be back much later!  Have a good day, all!

DR George, these are shaped like traditional pillows, not those weird-looking little flat things.  In case you go looking for them, they're called "Pure Comfort Gel-Memory Foam Classic Pillows", and they were in a sale bin near the front of the store.  Let's see how the next couple of nights go, but I'm very tempted to pick up another pair.

Larry, I think you have every right to feel outraged at your bank. Once you contacted them they should have acted accordingly. I suggest you change banks.

I had a credit card theft not long after I obtained a Discover card and they were prompt and courteous about taking care of it. My impression is that they really are trying to be consumer-friendly. Plus, they give rebate points!

You might also want to check with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and file a complaint. No one expects such lax behavior from a bank.

Bruce, I'm really glad to hear about your upcoming musical theatre workshops. I was hoping you'd be doing more with kids, but didn't know that the existing shows were being handled so poorly. Kids today need to learn how to be part of a team, whether they plan to pursue performing arts or not, and there's no reason to wait until college. Best of luck with it!

I'm back!  My friends got me a new computer monitor.  It's not "new" but it's new to me and is working A-OK!  That's the main reason I have been out of commission this go-round.

Humm..5-HTP. I've taken it to help me sleep, but I don't usually have problems with depression, so never tried it for that. In any case, I'm very glad that you're being helped.

Dear Singdaw-

It must be a banner day!  I have finally a monitor to open my "window" out onto HHW-land, today is TCB's Happy Birthday, and, what a great surprise, I have received your CDs!  I am so happy to find such a nice present in today's mail!  Your card and your note-- and well, everything --gave (and will continue to give) me joy and cheer.

For awhile I had been telling myself that I really didn't belong here with everyone.  Then I realized that we are all here because of the most basic reason, love of music.  In my own way, I try to celebrate music, and am looking to brush-up on what I was taught and perhaps learn music theory.

There is after all, some Tony Mottola music genes floating around inside me! ;)

Thanks so much!

Won't post it in the notes yet, but the show is a classic - one that involves gamblers and unmarried showgirls and the Salvation Army.  I thought it would be very cute with young people - like Bugsy Malone.

And here I thought I was personally particularly picky about pillows! When it comes to pillows I'm like the Princess and the Pea. MUST provide good cervical support. When my oh-so-comfortable eggcrate pillow fell apart I shopped for another. The first one wasn't quite right, although it looked like it would be, but now I have one I like. I haven't tried the new gel variety, but understand that they are supposed to keep your head cool at night.

George, memory foam packs down rather quickly, in my experience. There are lots of types of memory foam, though, and I'm sure some are better quality than others. The pillow I'm using currently is foam, but not memory foam, and it's holding up very well indeed. I think I bought it at Kohl's for $25 or $30. The Sleep Number stores have an interesting assortment of quality pillows--not Costco prices, but nice pillows.

Happy slumber!

Most people I know have little preference. Of course, there was a time when there weren't many choices--that nasty old foam rubber, down, or polyester. Now there are sooo many choices!

Of course it's a crap shoot how long these pillows will last, DR Jeanne, but other kinds of pillows don't last all that long for me anyway and we're talking five bucks per gel-foam-whatever pillow, which is unheard of.  And since Costco is on the way to my rehearsal, I believe I just might stop in tomorrow morning for another set.

Oh, I think it's a real bargain. It's much harder to shop for pillows than for shoes. At least you can usually try on shoes for a 30-second test in the store, but how do you test-drive a pillow short of sleeping on it? It's a crap shoot. That said, I've been able to find uses for the pillows I've purchased that turned out to be disappointing. Your kitties may enjoy your new pillows even if you don't. When I sold my house several years ago the real estate agent asked me if I'd donate an eggcrate pad I no longer needed to the animal shelter for the arthritic dogs. (I did so.) Lots of uses.

I've been watching The Golden Ring about the events in August 1964 and John Culshaw's epic recording. I'd never seen it before, and i really loved it. Fischer-Dieskau is so damned young, already a bit pretentious, and I hear he got worse as he aged. Birgit Nillsn is fantastic, and I loved it when they brought the horse into the studio. Culshawwrte a book about the recording and I'd like to read it.  The orchestra is amazing, and there's Willy Boskovsky, who conducted so many operetta recordings and Strauss waltzes, as concert master!  I think there's a bok about the recording as well by Culshaw and I'd like to read it.

Well, I'm not one to talk.  I've had the Culshaw book for years, and haven't read it.

Since it's been several years since I watched the documentary, I'll do that soon, then dig the book out and get going.  These are incredible documents of mid-century recording splendor.

As soon as it started up, I realized it had been more years than I'd thought since seeing it last.  But I liked it, for the most part.

The scoring seemed very faithful to what I remembered of the Broadway score, but I'll have to take a look at it in the cold light of day.

The presence of Gwen Verdon is a gift.  Even if she was, of course, more a stage actress than a film one.  I found myself "translating" it from film to stage as it proceeded.  And I've always enjoyed Ray Walston.  I guess I like him in this because I've known no one else in the role.  (I didn't see Jerry Lewis do it, and the only other stage productions I'd ever seen were amateur ones.)  He's a bit weak in the "Good Old Days" number, but the rest seemed okay.

I decided to do another jog so a total of three-and-a-half miles today - pretty good.  I watched a motion picture, and then began watching a six-episode BBC series on Netflix called Happy Valley.  Two episodes in and I'd say if they keep it up I will end up recommending it highly.
