I remember on one of the times my Paypal debit card was compromised that I railed about them letting the charges go through when they could have stopped them.  That company said they have to do it in order to be able to actually chase the crooks.  But the problem is, they don't chase the crooks - neither them nor the company's that were defrauded - it's not worth their time and that's why this continues.  With me, they knew the store and they had the perpetrator on camera and they still didn't care and a police report couldn't even be filed in that city - I had to file it here.  It was insanity and these jerk cretin crooks know it.

It's infuriating.  I found out several years ago, when I simply THOUGHT I'd lost my wallet, that debit cards are not protected the same way credit cards are.  I, too, sat in front of a bank person (and this was after the crisis had passed) and was amazed at what they're not equipped to do, and -- by law -- are not even required to do in the way of consumer protection coming first and speedily.  Credit cards, you just give them a call (and they're very good at catching fraud themselves these days) and they take care of it.  Not so with debit cards which, though used in the same way, are treated completely differently.  We can probably thank our Lawgivers for this.

This is why I refuse to have a debit crd.

Years ago I thought debit cards were a great idea.  Because who could ever guess a well chosen PIN, right?  I had no idea of the lack of protection.

Thank you, DR JRand63! It cannot happen fast enough!

My adopted son Joshie just called me to offer me financial assistance, and I thanked him and turned him down. This huge problem will be resolved without my going into debt while I cope.

Do they not ask for the PIN sometimes?

Not if you're using it for a credit instead of a debit transaction.  Providing it's a debit/credit card.  When someone gets the info on your card (which I think is what happened to BK, at a restaurant?), they can start charging it up.
