Title: THE ZAGAT RATING AND THE FRIED EGG

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Zagat rated the best on all the Internet, and now it is time for you to post until the Zagat rated cows come home.

Good morning, all!  I am happy to hear about the upcoming change. It tpok me over 30 minutes to log on this morning.

It is supposed to be a very hot day, so I am going to run down to Toyland, pick up a few things and be home and into the A/C as quickly as possible.

Bruce-- give Five Guys Burgers a shot sometime.  Their burgers are simple and good, and their fries are aces.  I'm not saying they're the absolute best burgers anywhere, but they're darned good.

I'm not a fan of Zagat (Although I like Tim and Nina Zagat) or Yelp or any of the online reviews because I don't know who these people are or what their tastes are like. So I don't know what they're basing their writing on.

I thought Zagat's was based on customer ratings. You still have the same problem - you don't know the reviewer's biases - but I don't think the ratings are written by the Zagats themselves.

No. And they sold it years ago. But I know restaurants who campaign heavily for their scores.

And I am home. I do wish the MTA would enforce the ruling that walkers must be collapsible so that they do not block the aisle of the bus.  I was hoping to see one old broad who had completely blocked the front aisle thrown off.

The only egg-on-hamburger I've ever had was the Mighty Brunchburger (am I remembering that name correctly?) at the Hamburger Hamlet, and I probably only had a few of them even then, in the '70s.

It's a messy affair, unless you cook the egg enough that it runneth not over everything as soon as you lift the burger to your face and take the first bite.  And if you cook it that much, you're kind of defeating the purpose, because it's the egg white AND soft yolk combining with a good quality ground beef that result in an incredible burst of flavor.  So ... yes, I liked it, but it was such a pain in the ass to eat that I only had it again a couple of times.

I just realized that I'd get some of that flavor enjoyment in later years by occasionally ordering a hamburger patty, instead of bacon or sausage, with my eggs at L.A. coffee shops.  Actually, I probably had it at the Hamlet in those early days.  That's a combination I mostly remember from California.  You could probably get the eggs "with patty" at a typical northeastern diner, or maybe even a Denny's, but I don't think I've seen it on any menus.  But that way, you're eating it on a plate, with a fork, without the bun and other burger toppings that help to explode the damned thing.

Re ALL THAT JAZZ -- I do recall having a similar feeling as BK about the sort of endless finale.  And I don't think anyone ever agreed with me on this, but the Merman "tag" always seemed like one thing too many.  Though now that I think about it, maybe it was the editing or timing that I thought was just the slightest bit off, and would have played fine with some extra breathing room.  Or something.  Well, we'll see what I think upon savoring the Criterion.  I'm sure all will be fine.  A great, great, GREAT film.

Saw All That Jazz back in high school. May have been the first R- rated movie I snuck into (or was it Bergman's Face to Face). I didn't see it again until a year or two ago and found it as vivid as if I had just seen it. Foldi is exceptional, Scheider never better and Lange appropriately creepy. Looking forward to the Criterion version.

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  I was up and out early (for me) to have coffee with Suzy, the AAUW member who publishes our program book/directory and our monthly newsletter.  She is all set to proceed on both while I'm away - just hope I can find Wi-Fi when I need it to proof the PDFs she'll send.

Then I went shopping for some trip this 'n' that and finally came home for lunch and to cool off - it was 88o and very muggy  :P

I thought the finale of All That Jazz was just a take off on the Finale of Pippin which also goes on pretty long..... haven't seen All That Jazz in a long time so I don't remember if it seems like it was too long to me or not

I've been to the new(ish) local Five Guys Burgers only once.  I'll try them again, but they're on the west side of Olympia, and to go there just for lunch would take too long.  I'll try for a dinner again, sometime...soon, I'm sure.  Since it's been a topic today, I'm kind of in the mood.

Keith worked at Cassell’s.  Alvin Cassell didn't have any children.  It is difficult to imagine the quality continuing after Cassell sold the business.  Everything about Cassell's was unique, even the bread was specially made for him.  He made his own mayo.

I know Cassell's was famous for having the best hamburgers but, by far, he baked the best ham I have ever eaten.

In those days of little money leftovers from Cassell's went far.  Even after Keith changed jobs we got ham & potato salad from our friend Ricky who had gotten Keith the job there.  Until we moved here I still had a few of the large containers the potato salad came in.

Am looking forward to tomorrow.  Bob is out of town due to a family emergency and I don't have anything scheduled.  I'm going to hide in my office, let my calls go to voicemail and get work done. I have a lot piled up and if I sit down and just work, I think I can get through a lot of it.  This doing the work of two full time people by myself is really getting old.  I thought about going back down tonight, but am thinking I'd rather relax tonight and just dig in tomorrow.  There is a baseball game but it's pretty wet outside, don't know if it's on or if it's going to be rained out

I don't care for them either.  My friend Marlene also puts up silly stuff that do make me laugh.  The stuff she remembers I never think about.  You did make your first comment with a smiley face so he shouldn't have gotten upset.

People are just trying to keep up a conversation so I don't bother about it.  There are only so many times, or not, we can talk about the Helm's Truck :)

I've notice I can tell by their memories if the person is much younger than I am.

Here's a local arts story that broke this morning.  It may be of interest to DRs Elmore, ChasSmith, Charles Pogue, John G, and anyone else interested in the Cincinnati arts scene:

Corbett Foundation to Close Its Doors (http://www.cincinnati.com/story/entertainment/arts/2014/08/26/corbett-foundation-cincinnati-symphony-music-hall-cincnnati-ballet-cincinnati-opera-nku/14639473/)

Thank you for the heads up on that, DR Ginny.

A HUGE name around the Cincinnati area.  Incredible.

I forgot I twisted my leg hiking this morning.  I was reminded as soon as I bent down to pick up the acorns.  I didn't stay out there long-lol  Fortunately there weren't many to pick up.  I could have picked up leaves forever.

The squirrels can't bury that many acorns, thank goodness.  Keith has to pull hundred of little acorn trees in the spring.

To me a burger should have cheese, Swiss, cheddar or muenster ,preferably.  It should be served on a toasted bun.  Sautéed mushrooms and onions and a liberal swipe of mayo is a nice finish
Title: Re: THE ZAGAT RATING AND THE FRIED EGG
Post by: vixmom on August 27, 2014, 10:04:47 PM
Or you can hold the onion and substitute brown gravy for the mayo
Title: Re: THE ZAGAT RATING AND THE FRIED EGG
Post by: vixmom on August 27, 2014, 10:06:16 PM
Or you can hold the mushrooms, add raw red onion or a nice slice of a valdalia onion and a little ketchup...preferably Heinz

Mustard should never never ever never under any circumstances be allowed to touch a burger

Hotdogs, on the other hand, must wear mustard. Preferably a spicy brown mustard, and a liberal amount of hot sauerkraut  as an extra bit of deliciousness you should sauté the sauerkraut with caraway seed with some bacon before putting it on your frank

Had a good little session for the birthday thing.  The host wanted to introduce one song, so I told him to do so so I could hear it.  He then told a ten-minute story of little point.  I have hopefully dissuaded him from doing it.

I'm watching a new show on BBC America (recorded on my DVR from Saturday) called "Intruders (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3552166/reference)."  It stars John Simm and it's quite mysterious.  According to the IMDb plot:  "A TV series centered around a secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others."

Right now, it's a little too mysterious for me.  What will it all be about?  Where's it going?  How long can they keep up the premise?
