Well, you've read the notes, the notes were finished and comped, and now it is time for you to post until the finished cows come home.

And the word of the day is: SYLLEPSIS!

I try to avoid disturbing films/ My goal in watching a movie is to be entertained and hopefully uplifted not to fill my brain with violent and or scary images that can't be erased
So I have never seen Texas Chain Saw Massacre or The Exorcist or Carrie or Damien or a slew of other "classic" movies... I steer clear of anything vaguely smacking of horror or violence ---
"The Changeling" with George C Scott was a bit much for me ... I still have occasional nightmares brought on by the images in that movie

George thank yoou about the heads up about the Here to Eternity - I must see if it is going to be in our local theatre

well I guess I better get started on my day-- the office beckons...

Good morning, all!
I am stting in the middle of chaos. Several months ago, our DR ChasSmith mentioned that he might have access to several 5-drawer fling cabinets from a closed office, if i'd like any for storage, and I accepted. So, this morning, DR ChasSmith is driving into Manhattan with these large cabinets in the back of his automobile. I will replace two 4-drawer cabinets I have with them.
So, last night I emptied the contents of the two cabinets and they are spread all over my living space awaiting transfer to their new home. I'm giving the ld cabinets to my neighbor across the hall, so they are not moving far. DR ChasSmith has warned me these cabinets weigh a ton, s I hope getting them from the car to the apartment can be accomplished without too much stress, hernia, or stroke.
I will spend some of my day reorganizing and putting things away. I need to talk to my adopted son Joshie at some point about the Encores! work, which I believe can finally begin (Thank you, Jesus!), and if I need therapy after all of this exertion today, I've got therapy in the morning.

As with Vixmom I also generally avoid seeing disturbing films.
But I did see Carrie because I was reviewing it.
Somehow I managed to see The Exorcist when I was 13 even though one was supposed to be 18. It did have an emotional impact on me.
Saw The Omen but didn't like it
As for "The Changeling" with George C Scott I liked the film because it was similar to The Haunting (Robert Wise version) and The Legend of Hell House because they were more atmospheric in their scares than with blood and guts.

Find it difficult to sit for long periods of time with my knee in its current condition but if I am medicated enough I might make an attempt to go to Frankenstein or Of Mice and Men.
No interest in seeing a musical of From Here To Eternity and I've seen Gone With The Wind many time in a cinema so I'll pass this time.
So maybe by the time they are shown things will be different

As a youngster I was disturbed by a few horror films, but I nevertheless love them -- they're a thrill ride type of thing for me.
The films that are prone to disturbing me are the type of thriller whose scary elements are within the realm of possibility of actually occurring. Things like Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon. Terrifying possibilities there. And yet I love those, too!
So, certain modern-day serial killer type stuff has that power. But so do certain quiet dramas. A couple of days after Robin Williams had died, I just happened to pick up the Blu-ray of One Hour Photo for a song at Costco. I'd only ever seen it on its original release, and thought it was great but I'd never returned to it. Well, I put that Blu-ray on, more just to have a quick look than to sit through it right at that moment, and there was obviously much I'd forgotten about the events of the story. As I used the chapter skip button to check out various scenes before moving on to something else that evening, I was stunned at the portrayal of his character, and at how every damned scene I looked at was profoundly disturbing, re the illness and the involvement with the family. I do look forward to watching it straight through sometime soon, but I was already squirming just in having a glance at it.
Here's an odd one pulled from memory: Deliverance really got to me in a disturbing way when it was new. I saw it at the Cinerama Dome on a weekend afternoon with friends, and throughout that evening I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach caused by my horror of being trapped in just such a situation in a region of the country and with its people, where one could end up feeling like they're in a foreign land. A scary foreign land.
Re the notes and Texas Chain Saw Massacre -- If I'd been attracted to seeing this back in the day, I imagine you could add it to this list. But I wasn't, back then, maybe not for the exact same reasons as BK, but it somehow remained outside my sphere of interest. I a DVD, which I believe I've never even looked at. Will be happy to check out the Blu-ray at some point, though, because I suspect I, too, will end up appreciating it in historical context.
-
My, that was long-winded. Enough! Must hit the shower and get ready to roll into town. And thank you so much for the heads up re today's events, DR Elmore! Hopefully my limited sphere of activity will not be too badly affected.

Two movies come immediately to mind:
1. I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG - That final scene never fails to affect me.
2. 1984 (1954) - I saw this when it first came out. It was the 2nd feature on a double bill at the Coliseum Theater in Seattle. I was 15 and I'd not read the book. The movie scared the Hell out of me.

Good travels to NYC for Chas Smith!
-
Tuesday morning greetings! I will be E & T a bit today because we're gearing up for next spring's AAUW book sale and need to do some repricing and clean-up at the old site. We don't yet have a new site, but moving is looking like more and more of a certainty. You'd think, with all the vacant real estate in this town, someone would like to donate a space for a good cause.

Vibes for DRs Elmore and ChasSmith! If the kitchenette that I showed off yesterday were in NYC, I'd prepare lunch for the two of you...

Good morning, all.
Texas Chsunsaw Massacre was filmed at Cele Store, a barbecue joint east of Austin. Secondhand Lions and A Perfect World were also filmed there. Magnificent building. Got a great photo of it at evening with ominous clouds behind it that's used in the BBQ book.
I watched the original Chainsaw for the BBQ book as research. My reaction was very similar to BK's recent viewing. It's a good example of a film from a genre I don't care about.

Looking forward to Sandy's album.

I was also a teenager when I saw The Exorcist -- Mom and I were on the sofa watching with our crochet lap blankets. When ever there was a scary part -- we would pull the afghan over our head and watch the TV between the holes of the blanket. The first and only time I saw the movie -- it had an emotional impact on me as well. I was like -- wanting to grab my rosary beads when ever the theme song was played. It comes from 12 years of catholic school. LOL
I can laugh about it now, but then -- holey moley!

I know I'm going to sound like a crazy person when I say this, but I really hated "Raiders of the Lost Arc" when I saw it in the theater. I was just so uncomfortable throughout the whole thing. I probably wouldn't hate it now, but I absolutely couldn't understand the appeal of it at the time.
-
TOD:
I saw LITTLE BIG MAN on tv when I was a child. Some scene in it disturbed me greatly, but I don't remember what it was (although I think it might have been a murder of a native American woman). I have not watched the movie since.
FEAR IS THE KEY. My brother Allen and his girlfriend took me and my little brother to see this at the theatre. Why? I don't know. We were just little kids. The film, as I recall, starts out with someone using a flame thrower to kill a man and woman. That is all I remember about the film, but it upset me a lot at the time.

TOD:
It's hard to say because my take on the question -- What is the most disturbing film or films you've seen? -- seems to be different from the others here.
"Salo: 120 Days of Sodom" by Pier Paolo Pasolini is possibly the most "disturbing" film I've seen. One of the worst, too. It's a film you could not pay me to watch again, as well.
I've seen some fright films with imagery that was "scary disturbing" but nothing I felt strongly about after watching them.
Of course, there is "Silence of the Lambs" -- the scenes with Jaime Gumm, who kidnapped and starved plump girls so that their loose skin could be more easily peeled off of them so he could make "skin clothing" from it was probably the most disturbing thing I've seen in a film of quality.
-
I started to watch "Salo: 120 Days of Sodom" (I got it from Netflix), and just couldn't get into it. It was too weird for me.
Another Topic of the Day film: Pink Flamingos. Just toooo weird for me when I saw it.

DR ChasSmith just headed back to Connecticut. The first hour from 11:00-noon dealt with unloading and getting the two filing cabinets into my building. When we turned one on its side for easier hauling, a mechanism holding one side of one of the drawers fell apart. We spent about an hour then trying to reassemble the piece. It wasn't easy and we finally found a workable solution, and went to lunch. It was a lovely visit, and DR ChasSmith is great company, and I am extremely grateful for his generosity in time and friendship.
I will now put my apartment back in order and then soak in a hot bath.

DR George I get the impression you will be watching Scorpion again but can't tell if you really liked it.

And I am back -- having successfully avoided, by the way, any bad traffic whatsoever in either direction. The Upper West Side, at least as far south as 79th Street, was affected imperceptibly, if at all, by the goings on in Midtown. I have no doubt it would have turned into a total hell if I'd tried going anywhere in that direction, but getting in and out of town as far as DR Elmore's place was effortless.
This morning there was something on the highway betwixt here and there that caused a ten-minute delay. But that's all.
As for now, ladies and gentlemen ..... it's Miller time.

Back from some lunch - cup of chili and a ham and Swiss on rye. Finally had the telephonic conversation and have been immersed in the Sandy booklet and packaging - liner notes and thank yous, band, and credits are now complete.

Good news about DR CHAS SMITH and DR ELMORE and the Saga of the Filing Cabinets.
The extra drawers will make a big difference, I am sure.

DR George I get the impression you will be watching Scorpion again but can't tell if you really liked it.
I enjoyed it enough that I'll watch it again. I certainly had to check my brain at the door...I mean, if a plane has enough room to fly over an air strip with no other plane in the way, why can't it just land and be able to hook up the computer safely?? I think that I'll enjoy the overall concept.

Funny to check ones brain regarding a show about a genius ;)
Thanks for the reports. I had read mixed reviews about wavered on recording it. Then I figured I could always delete it. We will give it a try.

From DR Jeanne-a long time ago:
There's a prequel, too--THE COFFEE TRADER. Also interesting, but I prefer the first.
I'm currently reading this and agree, but then I didn't expect it to be as good. I'm glad to see you call this a prequel. I was surprised to read it is not considered a prequel, not sure why. I'm guessing Liss wanted it kept separate.
I keep telling Keith he is the one who should be reading books about the stock exchange and coffee, neither of which I'm overly interested in. Sometimes I even gag at the smell of coffee-lol Reading this makes me wish I liked the stuff.

I had a small incident on my bike today in the library parking lot.
I have been having small problems with my left knee and left wrist. My knee does not hurt when i ride. But only when I have to push off it to start (when i'm stopped).
So i have been trying not to stop unnecessarily. And when I do stop I'm trying to push off the curb (less pressure on my knee).
So I was going to the library (driving very slowly in the parking lot). A lady that had a wheelchair sign in her car was coming out of the wheel chair parking. This is right where the bike racks are. I didn't want to stop because of my knee. I should have gone around because she was quite close to the curb.
Anyhow my right pedal hit the curb. So my left knee jammed. I managed to stay on the bike but the lady never even looked over. I will take 50% of the blame because i should have stopped or gone all the way around when I saw that she was close the curb. But geez if you are so out of that you don't even notice if someone practically hits your car then ...
I will ice my knee (which i have been doing anyways every day).

We have been on a roller coaster all day because we can't tell at this point if our Dear Dog is going to improve or decline and have to be put down.
-
But thanks, all, for your warm wishes!

I'm sorry, DR singsong! What a horrible situation.
After all that dealing with filing cabinets and then helping my 74 year-old neighbor with the two that i gave him, every muscle aches. It's time for the hot bath.
-
Vibes for Jennifer.

And for Vixmom and Mike. And anyone else in need.

I'm so sorry. I hate that roller coaster. Is DD Zach eating? Does the vet know what is wrong? There are internal specialist and you might have one in your area you can see tomorrow. Often you need a reference from your vet, or your vet to make the appointment.

Wrote some more of the commentary.

Get me off this damn page.

Must go sit on my couch like so much fish. I hope I can find some mindless thing on Netflix that I can snooze to if I choose to.

Okay....so it is The American Negro Theater Presents Fred Graham & Lili Vanessi in "The Swinging of the Shrew."

More vibes for DD Zach.

It's official: Barbra Streisand has her 10th Number 1 album and is the only artist to have number one albums in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's!!!!
-
Well, I must be going. Tonight, we're having a reading of what should (hopefully) be the final version of "The Head That Wouldn't Die," a stage adaptation of the sci-fi b-movie, "The Brain That Wouldn't Die." I think that only one song needs to be written and then the score will be done...yes, it's going to be a musical! :D Tonight, we're just going to read through it and see if this last batch of changes all makes sense. I'm sure that they will.
Anyway, be back later!

I see that Carol Burnett is doing Love Letters in NYC with Brian Dennehy for a few weeks (as is Mia Farrow and others). I wish Carol was going to be there in November around the time BK's shows will be performed.

I think my computer virus is spreading from my laptop to my main computer.
Is that even possible?
I keep getting kicked out of the Daily Discussions.

Yeah, that's kind of what they were going for, but it doesn't work.

I keep getting kicked out of the Daily Discussions.
It had been fine for the past few weeks, but this whole day has been wonky here. At times, it's like HHW had fallen off the internet. (Kritzerland, too.) Other times, I'd get those kickoffs or resets, or just plain excruciatingly slow page loading and posting. Then sometimes, like now, it's normal. Up and down all day.
-
Vibes for DD Zach. What a difficult time. Hugs to you DR Singdaw
-
Really? I haven't had any issues but I'll certainly report this. Let me know if it keeps happening.
-
Fine on the above post, but this is my second attempt at this one. (Sorry to say!)
-
Best of vibes for DD Zach. I know too well how painful these times are.

Yesterday's TOD - I hated Seussical the musical . And although I love cats....I hates CATS

Wonky is an excellent word for it. Odd delays, especially when I try to quote. This one, for example took more than a minute to load.

I need to talk to my adopted son Joshie at some point about the Encores! work, which I believe can finally begin (Thank you, Jesus!), and if I need therapy after all of this exertion today, I've got therapy in the morning.
that Chas Smith is a fine fellow!!
He is a truly wonderful friend! But, so are you, DR vixmom.
But let's be honest: there are a plethora of fantastic, generous, kind, loyal and fantastic friends on this site! God bless the internet for this alone.
and porn.
:-* :-* :-* and ;D

Is this a school night?

I buckled down, Winsocki and wrote almost all of the commentary - we have eighteen songs in this show so I had to keep some of it very short.
-
Then again, I haven't decided on one thing - I am waffling between doing a repeat performance of the trio Three Friends - if we did that, then the song count would drop to seventeen. But I may not do it, in which case Jenna and Sami each get a solo - I'm leaning that way now because I really like the songs I chose for them - Sami, Lion Tamer and Jenna the title song from Carrie.

The read-through went quite well. There are actually still a couple of songs that aren't finished (musically...otherwise all the lyrics are written), and the narration needs to be cut down a bit, but overall, it's going to be fun.

I'm recording "Gentleman's Agreement" to my DVD burner for my dad.
-
I think I recorded it for myself in a previous broadcast, but I don't know where the DVD could be...if I actually made a DVD.

The real Baby/Dainty June is in it...but she's all growed up.
