And the word of the day is: HOYDEN!

Do you know a lot of hoydens?  Did William Holden like hoydens?
Kim Novak wasn't a hoyden, and Jimmy Stewart couldn't have been.
Favorite Film of theirs is, of course....Vertigo  :) :D

I don't have a favorite Kim Novack film but she did have some great dialogue in The Mirror Crack'd.

I could eat a can of Kodak and puke a better movie.

To Liz Taylor's character: Chin up, darling... both of them.

As for Mr. Stewart

I would have to say: Harvey, The Philadelphia Story, Rope (But film really belongs to Farley Granger and John Dall) and Rear Window

Good morning, all! I had a lot of really strange dreams last night. In one, I went to a party on Fifth Avenue in this really swank apartment, and the only people I knew there were Joshie and Rob Berman. I mostly remember wandering from room to room where there were all these wealthy socialites in evening gowns and suits. I seemed to be losing my clothes. I left the party and returned looking for my cap. Couldn't find it. Then, I got a taxi and we headed up Central Park West, and then I was in a subway wearing only my underwear, as I recall, and it was a complete ordeal trying to get to my apartment. I think Bertolt Brecht was talking to me on the subway platform.

So, I have physical therapy this morning. I will return, finish up this young man's orchestra score, and get back to Paint Your Wagon work.

Great photos, DR vixmom! I'm happy you and the vixter had a good day. Did you get a chance to visit with our DR ChasSmith at all?

I really enjoyed all of the stories from yesterday.  And I'm ready for a nap.

More coffee!

That snow is starting early! Last year it waited until after Thanksgiving. In 2013 we arrived in Minnesota the day after Thanksgiving and the day before a 6-inch blizzard hit the city and it went down (temps and snow) from there!
Title: Re: THE DOUBLE NOTHING
Post by: Druxy on November 10, 2014, 05:23:01 AM
Regarding VERTIGO:

I think that Hitchcock did the "big reveal" 30 minutes or so before the end of the movie because he knew that audiences were going to suspect the ending anyway, so by giving them the solution early, he avoided criticism like, "Oh, I knew that thirty minutes before the end of the movie."

I saw VERTIGO when it first came out, and I thought he'd made a big mistake by doing that, but since then I agree that it was a brilliant move.  It changed the who focus of the film's final half hour.

Nevertheless, of Hitchcock's films, I much prefer NORTH BY NORTHWEST, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (2) and REAR WINDOW.  I would rank VERTIGO as #4 on my list of Hitchcock favorites.

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates you think that some of your hard work is unappreciated by people who should know better.  You also consider yourself more at home with younger people than your peer group.  You also worry every time you go someplace that you have left something behind and that it will not be recovered.

Really?  The last part is right on; I've left my cane twice now in taxis, but I may have to take your word for some of that.  On my way hme from therapy, i realized i had forgotten a dream i had last night about Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus and Erich Korngold. Brecht and Johann Strauss. Whoda thunk?

So, i'm home for a bit. Tonight I am going to a free concert of Michael Valenti's Lovesong at the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center.

TCB, Seth Rudetsky has been in San Antonio a few times lately raising money and awareness for a theater that largely stages musicals. He was with Ana Gasteyer this past weekend and I had to miss it. But I'm hoping to catch him when he comes back in a month or two with Christine Ebersole. I know she's not Elmore's favorite person, but I loved her in "Gray Gardens" and "Saturday Night Live," and I think he's a hoot.

Ms Ebersole is quite talented and charming, when it's all about her.  In my experience working with her she was quite unpleasant once she realized early in rehearsal that another star, who was very charming, was going to get the big applause. Ut went downhill from there.

We were very hesitant to go up there but things needed doing.  The roofer that cleaned the moss off said it was in good condition, but then our roof is not nearly as old as yours.
They are supposed to last 100 years, but I don't know if mine will really last that long.  I've been told it's in good shape.  I won't replace it with slate if it needs to be replaced.  There are lots of good looking asphalt shingles these days, so I could get something nice for a lot less money than replacing slate.   Hopefully I won't have to do that any time soon

Glad you had a good first day.  From the weather channel and local news I thought you may have had more than that. I must have gone just north of the city

Saint Paul has the largest collection of preserved Victorian-era homes remaining in the country - more than 4 miles worth, in an area extending several blocks wide.  There are heavy restrictions on building work and restoration in the historic district, which can get quite expensive. But they've tried to give homeowners a break by authorizing cheaper alternatives which still look authentic. Apparently there is a faux-slate material that looks just like the real thing, but is a lot cheaper. Something to consider, anyway.

If anyone wants to check out Kristin Chenoweth's new cd she posted that it is up today on NY Times site.

I'm listening to this right now.  I'm enjoying it.

It doesn't work for me.

Thanks for the tip. Hoping I don't have to think about that yet.  I do need to call a roofer for advice.  Just not really wanting to deal with it.  I think my caulking will do for now

One of my staff left at about 4:10 and he called me at 4:40.  He got on I-5 right away but in that half hour, he hadn't even travelled the half mile to the very next exit!  I don't know what happened, but it evidently just happened and everything is backed up. :P

And I am home from the NYPL. I had a great time at LOVESONG, which was my first chance to hear the complete score. The original cast recording has about 2/3 of the score, and there were some funny, bawdy snippets of sng, as well as several songs, that I'd never heard. The 4-persons of the cast were good, and they'd be even better if they had a chance to play the show for a bit and get it really under their belts. The orchestra is about six pieces, as I recall, and i missed them. Bill Cox the MD and Bill Ellison on bass filled the space very nicely.

Ron Spivak did a wonderful series of projections and they added a nice layer to the mix. Now I want a complete recording of this score. I have got to win the lottery.

Any Ian McEwan fans out there? I loved "Atonement" and "Saturday." Right now I'm halfway through his latest, "The Children Act." Wonderful story of a judge who kicks her husband out the house and watches her personal life crumble while facings some heavy ethical and philosophical questions as a children's judge. The main case involves whether the child of Jehovah's Witnesses should be forced to undergo potentially life-saving blood transfusions, though they are against the family's religion. It's a slender novel, but it has really gripped me.

That sounds like me and cleaning out the refrigerator. I'm forever saying that I must do it--and I do get rid of the worst of it--but I never get around to doing the job properly. Laundry is so much easier!

I have literally spent the last two hours sending reminders to people.  I think for whatever reason, all these NY people I gave so much work to, some of them even career boosts, just dig in their heels and don't want to come.  It seems willful to me, and I never ever forget these things.

Last Friday I was notified that someone had used my Amazon credit card. I'm still not completely convinced that it was fraud as opposed to typing in an incorrect number, but of course the credit card companies aren't about to share their verification procedures and it's not something where you want to take a chance. So we cancelled my card. I have other cards to use, but that particular card was embedded in a number of places and I'm wracking my brain to recall which they were. I was told the new card would be delivered today via UPS. I rather doubted that it'd get here, but it did. It was 7:30 pm, but it got here. These things used to take about ten days. I plan to put all the dental work on this card and pick up lots of rebate points.

Just finished watching a taping of a production of George M. Cohan's "Little Johnny Jones" at Goodspeed from way back in the day (imbd says it was 1980). The cast included Lenny Wolpe and Ernie Sabella. In one of the audience shots, it looks like our very own Elmore enjoying a laugh or two.
