Title: FEELING MY OATS
Post by: bk on November 19, 2014, 11:24:41 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes felt their oats, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently watching that sci-fi classic The Day the Notes Felt Their Oats.

Good morning, all!  In another hour I will head to the bus and make my trip to Radio City and my barber. I'll get to look at the Rockefeller Plaza tree and that I look forward to. Once I'm home, I've got plenty of work here.

DR TCB, I loved the BABES IN ARMS photo.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas: the flower market on the corner has cleaned out their potted plants to make room for all the trees that will arrive next week. From Thanksgiving to Dec, 26 or so, the corner will smell like pine and a trip to the market will be a jaunt through a maze of trees, garlands, and wreathes.

TOD:

I liked THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, as well as the first AIRPORT movie.

There were also a couple of thrillers I thought were pretty good, but I can't recall the titles.  One starred Jodie Foster and the other Rachel McAdams.

The Met was quite an experience.  They have the longest intermissions ever.  Act 2 of AIDA is the most exciting, and the rest was fine.  The story really doesn't end well for anybody.

Mike Nichols was actually on my mind this week -- due to two things I'd been watching which weren't his, but in which there were direct associations.

RIP, sir.

Then a great double bill would be The Crowded Sky and Airport 1975. They both star Dana Andrews and Efram Nimblest Jr. In the former Nimblest flies a small plane that hits a passenger plane piloted by Andrews. In the latter it's the opposite.

Had an oddly not-unpleasant dream shortly before awakening, involving at least two, maybe three, of the usual themes.  There was a performance of something or other about to happen within the next couple of hours, for which I needed to get set up, but it seemed more to involve a setting up of office equipment and papers than anything actually musical.  It also involved a move of offices and a chance to purge stuff.  I can't put my finger on who else was in it or exactly where we were, which I think would unlock the dream more than the stuff remembered more easily.  Damn it.  Damn it to hell.

What had me thinking about Mike Nichols this week was watching the first half of the film version of LUV for literally my first time since the week it was released.  Which, of course, had nothing to do with Nichols -- except that watching it, and seeing Elaine May for the first time in a while, was bringing back a flood of wonderful memories of the wonderful parts of the 1960s, and I vowed to take out my Nichols and May records soon -- which now I will most definitely do, in tribute.

DITTO!

And for my taste, though it's certainly an annoyance, this is NOTHING like dealing with a tooth extraction.  It's just:  work.  And waiting for the permanent crown to be made.  (I still wonder why more dentists aren't going for the same-day crown process.  It certainly has worked beautifully for me.)

DR CHAS SMITH the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates that you think of theatre and music as a serious business, and that you wish everyone you worked with felt the same way.  You know the best way to get a show where it is supposed to be, and some people you work with cause you MORE work because of their incompetence.

It almost sounds like a dream DR ELMORE would have.

KennedyKat wrote:

I am new to anything like this site. And a bit embarrassed to admit I had no idea who Bruce Kimmel was when I was inspired enough by the Moldau post to actually go through the process of signing up. Since then life has been crazy and I haven't had any time to write about my own introduction to one of my favorite pieces of music......except the hour I managed to find Sunday morning when I actually got well into what I wanted to say only to have this !*#@*! machine send it all to another dimension before I had finished writing.
Oh well, at least I have had the time to Google "Bruce Kimmel " before trying again.
Reading that post I was taken back in time about forty five years. To my first year of, yes, Junior High and the required music appreciation class. Unlike you, Bruce, I already had a fairly solid introduction to classical music. My father and both of his younger sisters were all accomplished pianists. Not professional musicians although if any of them had been inclined they could probably have made a living with that talent. My dad probably had the most natural gift, he had an incredible touch on the keys, but his real passion was electricity of all things. Geared mostly towards sound....he was the electrical engineer who put together the local station KDWB back in late fifties and was also one of their first DJ's.....but pretty much anything to do with wires and currents and batteries and waves.....I lost all interest in electricity when my older brother, older by a bit over a year, handed me two wires to hold for him when I was about four and then proceeded to shock the pants off me cranking the small generator the wires were attached to. That and an experience with a metal lunchbox and an electrical fence with a very strong current running through it which took place during one of those week long springtime rainstorms put me off anything to do with electricity for the rest of my life. So far.
So anyway, I grew up listening to classical music. Mostly piano compositions but a bit of everything else too.
The music appreciation class wasn't very popular with most of the student body but I was predisposed to enjoy it not only because of my family background but also because that same older brother had taken the class the year before and raved about the instructor, Mr. Joy.
I am going to post this and come back to it....partly so I don't lose it and partly because I see a few hungry horses outside my window and I swear they are sending me subliminal messages.....gotta go.

Back from Dr. Chew - oy and vey.  The Novocain shot was excruciating.  Then there was a LOT of noisy drilling, none of which I felt, thankfully.  It went on and on and on.  In the end, he removed the gold crown that's been on that tooth for over thirty years, cleaned out the little decay that had begun, took impressions, and then put a temporary.  The good news is that the new crown will be porcelain not gold, and that will leave only one gold crown and since that one is over thirty years old, I'm going to suggest we replace it, too.

BK and I seem to be in parallel dental universes. I believe I mentioned that I have a new dentist and will be undergoing a new dental procedure next week. A couple weeks ago, said new dentist informed me that I have two old crowns that need to be replaced soon. Sigh. This, of course, is in addition to the work I already knew about ($$$$!!!).

He told me, "We'll work with you." Does that mean give me a nice discount? Not require payment all at once? I just signed up for an additional credit card. Think of all the rebate points!  Bruce, I hope you're getting rebate points for your dental work.

I am waiting for someone from the gas company to show up and repair my heater. I can use a day at home. Stuff piles up soooo quickly! Toward the end of each year I'm always in the mood to give everything a good cleaning and toss what I don't need. I'm working on some of the tossing today. There's too much to do all at once. It gets tedious. But I hope to make a sizable dent in it.

TCB, I enjoyed seeing your old photos, as well as the one George took at your lunch together.

I'm sorry you're having continued pain problems. Have you talked to your doctor about a complementary pain management strategy? It means using more than one pain medication, but at different times. I do this daily. The December issue of Life Extension magazine has an article on their 5-Lox Inhibitor, and it's written so that you don't need to be a biochemist to understand it. If I can find an online copy I'll post a link.

I hope you're feeling better today.

Thursday morning greetings!  Thank you to everybody who has posted travel vibes for us for today.  I really don't want to leave, but I am looking forward to my own shower and having a bedside reading lamp again.  We'll be out of the apartment by about 11 for our flight from LGA at 2.

I am not looking forward to my own shower.  I love the outdoor shower here.  Fortunately I used it before the hard, extremely loud rain began.

I should mention, too, that there's a link between pain and hydration. I find that if I don't stay fully hydrated I experience more pain. I'm trying alkaline water to see if that helps. Too soon to say, but the concept is valid.

The Novocain was supposed to wear off in two hours.  I would say at this point in time it has worn off not one iota.  I'm hungry but alas cannot eat until it's completely worn off.  It feels like that may in fact be ANOTHER two hours.

Novocain finally wore down enough where I could eat - creamy tomato penne pasta - went down easy.  No bread, no nothing else.  I bought some tap tap tapioca pudding for dessert, which I'll eat later tonight.  By the end of lunch the Novocain was pretty much gone, leaving only pain.

I spoke to DR Kate.  She and her husband were almost evacuated from their home.  They were afraid the roof would collapse. Luckily some guys were removing the snow from the house across the street and DR Kate and DH Jerry hired them to work on their house.  It took 5 guys two hours to do it. The streets have been plowed but there's a driving ban. She said they didn't get too much snow today.  Another problem is that it's going to warm up over the weekend and rain is predicted so they're worried about flooding.   Vibes needed!

KDWB over the Years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDWB-FM)

When I listened to it the jingle was

KDWB Channel 63.

Jingle (http://www.radiotapes.com/kdwb.htm)

The jingle is at about the :40 second mark on #1

Yes, I know it was a radio station but that was the tag line. This was in the early and mid-60s. We also listened to WDGY (mentioned in the KDWB history and called WeeGee)

WDGY (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WDGY)

This all relates to KennedyKat's post because she said her father worked at KDWB

The gas company guy didn't arrive until 5 o'clock. The appointment window was noon to 5 pm, so I was getting a little worried. But he was able to repair the heater through a series of minor adjustments and I now have heat. On cold nights the temperature here can drop down into the 30s, so one does need heat. I have never heard of alkaline water.  Drinking water is required when you take Vicodin.

Most water is somewhat acid and acidity is associated with pain syndromes. The pharmacist who has been so helpful to me over the years recommends drinking the juice of half a lemon in a glass of water three times a day. Lemon juice goes in acid, but leaves an alkaline ash, which alkalinizes your system. The body heals best in a slightly alkaline environment. Alkaline water has been all the rage in certain circles for a few years now and alkaline water can be purchased in health food stores and some Trader Joe's and other places. I quite like the taste of it and it's easier to grab a bottle of it than "lemonize" your drinking water, though I do like the taste of lemon water also.

Said pharmacist also advocates drinking half an ounce of water per day per pound of body weight. Sixty-four ounces per day (8 8-oz glasses) simply isn't enough for many of us. When I get a bad muscle spasm I'll sometimes fast it out, ie, do a water fast, eating nothing and  drinking as much water as I can, until the spasm is gone. There have been times when that was the only way I could find to get rid of the spasm, and thus the pain.

I had to go to the dentist yesterday and am scheduled for  crown in February.   DR Jeanne do they have Care Credit out there?  It's 12 months no interest.  I used it for my last crown and it worked quite well.  I'm planning to use it again.

I'm a little irritated.  One of the local tv stations called me to do an interview about the Obama immigration stuff.  I made time for them today, the reporter was a half hour late then did about a 1/2 hour interview.  He told me it would be on the 6 o clock news, so I told my family and some friends to watch. Nothing. They did the whole story with footage from the local non-profit that helps immigrants.   Nothing on the 10 oclock either.  They said they wanted to do a follow up tomorrow, but I don't think I'm going to do it.  I've got too much to do and if they aren't going to use it why bother.   It was a bit embarrassing to not have it on after telling people.  Oh well

The local paper did call me after Obama made his announcement.   The interesting thing is he talked about two changes, not the other 19 the White House briefed the immigration lawyers on.  Oh well.

I do have a client that is sort of high profile locally.  I think it's just the bizarre tattoo on her face that attracts the media.  Anyway, we moved her plea and sentencing from December to today at the last minute.  The media has been reporting everything we do.  I figured with the immigration stuff, the snow in Buffalo and the possible whatever may happen in Ferguson Mo it was a good day to do it and keep her out of the media.   it worked.

I'm an alternate on the commission for this one and so far so good, but I could get a call at 7:00 am that I need to be 90 miles away in dress clothes by 9:00am.  Hopefully no one  will do that to me.  They say they put new members on as alternates so they can learn.  The truth is no one wants to do it because you don't know if you're needed until the last minute.

I'm really hoping that I don't have to go. I have a ton to catch up on.  It may just be a lock the door and let the phone go to messages day.  I do that every once in a while and get a ton of work done.

NBC is showing the "winter finales" of all the shows on their Thursday night line-up.  "Grey's Anatomy" was pretty good and I don't watch "Scandal" anymore.  I'm now watching "How to Get Away with Murder."  We (the audience) now know who killed the murder victim.

I had to go to the dentist yesterday and am scheduled for  crown in February.   DR Jeanne do they have Care Credit out there?  It's 12 months no interest.  I used it for my last crown and it worked quite well.  I'm planning to use it again.

I have Care Credit...I've used it for my cat.  My vet is the one who told me about it.
