Well, you've read the notes, you read the notes in a trice, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be home in a trice, natch.

TOD: I like the movie "Scrooge" -- the musical one. I have it here somewhere. I'm not sure I have any other Christmas movies around.

The last couple of years we saw "White Christmas" on stage: one was a Broadway tour and one was a local production.

Good morning, all!  The damned dog barked way too late last night and I get to bed late.  I slept late this morning, and I think I will be more E&T than I would like for the next week. This Macbook is fine for out of town travel but I really hate using it; the screen is too small and my eyes are too shot.  It's a bitch to read anything and since I can afford no new glasses at this tine, I'm stuck with what I have. So, I think I'll be off this computer more than usual.

I'm in the minority since I loathe and detest the musical film SCROOGE; give me Alistair Sim or Michael Hordern as Scrooge, and I also like Patrick Stewart.

Movies
The Ref
Prancer
Elf
The Bishop's Wife
Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol

Plays/Musicals
She Loves Me
The Man Who Came To Dinner
White Christmas

DR ELMORE - I'm not sure how a MAC works.....but if you hold down the control key and use the SCROLL function sometimes you can make your words larger on the screen.

Have fun at the party DR CILLA LIZ.

Surviving the extension vibes for DR SINGDAW.....

"Carry On Nurse" is just coming on TCM.....it seems they are showing the Carry On films on Saturday mornings since they ran through all of the Dr. Kildare films.

All of the versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL.....I especially like the Albert Finney SCROOGE.....the story is most excellent as well!

I like to see it onstage, too.....in all its different forms.

I like White Christmas....the movie.  I have never seen the stage version, but I don't think I would be interested in it....OR the stage version of A CHRISTMAS STORY.....

Did I report that I decided to get AppleCare for my lone Apple product, the iPad?  I went over to the Apple store the other day and made the purchase ($99 for two years).  I generally don't go for spending additional money on a lot of extended warranties and such, but following BK's stories of redemption, and DR Elmore's Mac Man, plus the fact that you can actually destroy the thing and have it replaced with a brand new one twice in the two years, the decision didn't seem to be one that required the use of my brain.
Title: Re: WRITING NOTES IN A TRICE
Post by: Ginny on December 20, 2014, 08:11:06 AM
DR ChasSmith, we're AppleCare fans, too.  Richard bought it for the iPad Mini he gave me for Christmas 2 years ago, right before we went to England.  When I dropped it in Norwich Cathedral, the floor won.  It still worked, but the glass was shattered.  We took it to the Kenwood Apple Store when we returned and I got a whole new one for just a $50 "deductible."

For A Christmas Carol, it's Alistair Sim for me all the way, baby.  I have actually not even seen most other film and TV adaptations.  I only remember, as a kid, being less interested in the Reginald Owen film version.

However, the other night TCM was running a bunch of them and I caught just a few minutes of the 1964 TV movie A Carol for Another Christmas which I'd never seen, and it looked wonderful.  Written by Rod Serling, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, starring the likes of Sterling Hayden, Eva Marie Saint, Ben Gazzara and others, with a score by Henry Mancini -- what's not to like?  I am truly sorry I didn't get to watch or DVR it.

(I don't suppose DR George or anyone DVR'ed it?  hmm?  hmm?)

DR Ginny, I think the "deductible" on my iPad Air is $79.  Still, enormously worth it.

It is pouring this morning.  I hope that means it is snowing on Mt. Ashland.  Last year they were not able to open the ski slopes and are only open this year due to generous donations, otherwise they would have gone bankrupt.  They need a very good year.  I just want the snow in the mountains and not down here.

How could I forget "A Christmas Story," which is so evocative of my memories of Middletown, OH in the early 1950s?  Any movie that makes a Trip To Santa a Trip To Hell is great art, in my book.  I believe the same director did the spooky "Black Christmas" (?) that terrified me about 40 years ago.

Look under FREE MOVIES and then NETWORK it should be there.  I don't think it says TCM ON DEMAND on my menu.
Title: Re: WRITING NOTES IN A TRICE
Post by: ChasSmith on December 20, 2014, 11:24:30 AM
DR Jrand64, you are so right.  I thought I had drilled down into the menus every which way, but I never went down that exact path.  Also, I probably would have missed it anyhoo because they're not listing it by its full title ("A Carol for...").

Unfortunately, for some reason, the TCM movies in that section of On Demand are stretched to fill the 16x9 screen, so the picture is absolutely abominable.  I can resize it to 4x3, but it becomes a zoomed-in picture of horrible quality.  This has never happened anywhere else in On Demand.  Until I can resolve that issue, I'll have to watch it via the web site, which comes with its own liabilities -- low-res and jerky motion, but it's much more watchable.

EDIT:  It displays correctly on the other set in the other room!  (Oy!)   :)

There's something going on in our living room that I've wanted to happen for 26 years, but never had the energy - a Christmas tree is going up.  We always put ours (artificial) in the family room, because that's where we spend most of our time.  I've thought about a second tree and this year it's happening, courtesy of Rob and Mary Linda.  They like to cut a fresh tree, which they did this afternoon.  They're trimming while I wrap presents downstairs and Richard's picking up pizza for our dinner.

Thank you DR Ginny.  I wish Portland had enticed him from Chicago, but alas it waited too long to offer more interviews.  I really don't think there was much there to begin with.

Chicago is a nice city and I have family & friends there.  Of course I only want to go during the nice weather times.

We watched the Reginald Owen version of Christmas Carol today. Mom's reaction was interesting: the movie was so Hollywood that she didn't buy it that the Cratchitts were poor. Their clothes were too nice.

Tonight I drove Paul by this house across the river in Nebraska.  They put on a 30 minute light show and you tune your radio in to hear their broadcast.  It ends with the Nebraska fight song and Santa passing  touch down passes on a football field on the roof.  It's totally over the top.

Yesterday, I wrote that I had ordered the 2-CD soundtrack to "Into the Woods" and that I got notification that it was supposed to be delivered on Sunday and that "that ain't gonna happen."  And then TCB asked why not because he's had things delivered on Sundays.  The reason is because I have all my shipments sent to my work and it's ALWAYS closed on Sunday, so it will always have to be the next working day.  So, Monday it is.

A Christmas Story
It's a Wonderful Life
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Scrooge
She Loves Me
The Shop Around the Corner
White Christmas

I like the cast recording of the musical "Elf", but I haven't yet seen the TV version.

(I don't suppose DR George or anyone DVR'ed it?  hmm?  hmm?)

I didn't even know about it...but if it's on again, I can.

I watched tonight's episode of "The McCarthys" and the episode right before it was "Two and a Half Men."  At the end of every Chuck Lorre show, he has a card that's displayed for only a second or so and you have to freeze-frame it be able to read it.  Tonight, he wrote "Random Advice to Young Comedy Writers," and one thing he wrote was this:

"People who write poisonous things about your work are using up precious moments of their life dwelling on yours.  These are moments they will never get back.  Let that be a comfort to you."

I thought that that was pretty funny!
