Well, you've read the notes, the notes featured Gumboots in the Ukraine, a story of the gay old bohemian days of yore, and now it is time for you to post until the day old bohemian cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: RAILBIRD!
-
First post after BK!
-
good morning to all
-
I will report back how my day went based "on actual true events"

So... THIS is happening a few blocks away from my house. It's called "Crashed Ice." The track starts just under the rose window of the Cathedral, and winds its way to downtown. Four skaters at a time head down the track at 60mph. 120,000 people come out to see it. I am content to watch it on TV and wonder at the insanity. :)

Good morning. I spent yesterday hiking with a future in-law.
-
I took my camera all the way, but realized I had left the memory card in the computer.
-
Good morning, all!
Where the fat hell is winter? I am sleeping under a sheet in an apartment so goddam hot that I have two fans blowing on me. I hate it.
So, I have company today for a late Christmas celebration, and I have an apartment to tidy and vacuum.
-
I've been listening to HONEYMOON IN VEGAS; I like the lyrics better than the score, and the composer's predilection for piano is a little overbearing; it too often sounds artificially raised to a sound level hotter than ears can stand. The score also suffers from the lack of what used to be a Broadway orchestra with a real string section. The constant brass-reeds "Vegas-y" sound gets overbearing.
I don't know who orchestrated what, but the composer who also did the vocal and dance arrangements is now a Tony winning orchestrator and I'd be curious to know which are his, but I suspect my favorites are by my friend Larry Blank. The orchestration of the Entr'Acte is so much better than the Overture, I think they should have switched places.

Better that than senility.

I saw a song from HONEYMOON IN VEGAS on television on Friday.....I think on the Today Show. The lead guy (not Tony Danza) and a lot of Elvis impersonators were singing a song about jumping out of an airplane.
It was okay....but the lead Elvis wasn't so hot.
-
Good morning, all.
Another day begins.
And so does another nor'easter, and I am not at home to receive it. A pity. I don't know their schedule, but I hope it doesn't interfere with the Vixfamily's plans for escape.
Coffee!
-
That's all for now. Happy weekend to all!
-
Morning all.
That is all.

It's Saturday. Enjoy it!

Saturday morning greetings! Sunny and cold here in SW Ohio - my favorite kind of winter day.
-
Watching College Game Day on ESPN because they're broadcasting from Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor - Go, Blue!
-
I saw that Vegas number with the Elvises - I thought it was as bad a number as I've ever seen and just so typical of today's musical theater in its sound and staging.
-
I'm up after a ridiculous night - I knew I wasn't going to get enough sleep - fell asleep around two and then woke up at four-thirty because LA has decided to have a hurricane or something - crazy winds and they kept tripping the side light of my neighbor, which shines brightly into my bedroom window. And the noise. The pool this morning is filled with so much crap it's not even funny and I'll have to attend to that later. It finally quieted down enough to fall asleep around six so maybe I got five hours of sleep - not what I needed and please send excellent vibes and xylophones for no getting sick because three of my cast are sick.
-
No Sick Vibes for MR BK & Cast.
-
I'm feeling a bit under the weather at the moment, but i'm hoping it's just the morning meds. I do not need to be sick, much less infect my guests.
-
No sick vibes for DR ELMORE as well.
-
Cooling off vibes for Larry! Isn't there a way you can just turn off the heat at night?
-
No getting sick for BK, DR Elmore, and everyone else!
-
Wellness vibes for BK from NY as well!

Two amusing things this morning - I made a post on a theater board where I only post infrequently because I cannot stand these PC putzes who go on about how the film of Gigi (and presumably Colette's story, which I've doubt they've read) is "creepy" and that they've always found it "creepy." Well, you know, in 1958 it wasn't creepy to anyone because somehow back in those halcyon days audiences understood context and when a story was taking place. Radical I know. But today, they cannot understand anything without viewing it through their own little PC world view where context has gone completely missing. I said we may as well retire Showboat, ban Lolita, get rid of Carousel and its "spousal abuse" and on and on and on - it's just so noxious. We must revise Annie Get Your Gun into a stupid, humorless show within a show and not offend ANYONE, as if anything in that show is offensive if viewing it in the context of a) when it was written and b) when it takes place.
So, a couple of folks agreed and thanked me for making the post and a couple disagreed, but only one came after me in a, well, shall we be kind and say personal and obnoxious way. Now, sometimes I'm a bit slow on the uptake, so I responded with what I felt was a good post. They then responded and got really personal so of course I think we all know who it was. A quick perusal of that board showed no other posts by this person, and since they refer to a post I made about the film of Nine, which is how many years ago, I think we all know what's what.
-
And for Larry, too, of course!
-
Wellness vibes, that is!

And then there's this kind of pathetic little B'way page on Facebook, started late last year by what appear to be people barely out of their teens. I noticed yesterday that they now do a - wait for it - topic of the day, which they amusingly call Today's Topic. Hmmm. And yesterday they used the expression "our very own" to call out a poster. Hmmmm. And today is something called "Free Pass" day, the day in which they get to post about any old topic they choose. Do we think this board has influenced them? I know what I think. Just waiting for the words "dear readers" to appear.

It would seem they're not even trying to hide their being an homage. It's none too subtle where their ideas came from.
-
Or at least so it seems.
-
Hmm, to Talkin Broadway's users' credit, and to you credit too, it feels like you inspired some thoughtful comments over there

Good morning. The state of current musical theatre has finally taken it's toll on this older person. I say older as the people I do shows with are much younger than me now. It's quite sad on all accounts. I recently turned down a gig at my "home" theatre because they chose Nice Work if You Can Get It = a show I have NO interest in at all. Not only do I have no interest in it, but I didn't want to spend months reducing the 20+ piece orchestration down to 10 for our tiny pit. You just don't take the time if you don't love the material. Well, that has been solved as we are opening our season with Chicago now, which I'm totally fine with. But my point, I agree with everything bk posted earlier about older shows and today's younger theatre crowd. It has to be LOUD, it has to NOT OFFEND, and it has to TOUCH people. No more having mindless fun at the theatre anymore. NO MORE FUN ANYMORE. Really???

On that note - I'm seeing Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit this evening. I'm excited to see a legend.

I threw my back out this morning.
I was fine when I got up this morning, but while having coffee, something slipped and I was down for the count. Too early in the day for pain pills, so I will just suffer for now.

Today is supposed to be the first of our warm winter days, but, so far, it is overcast ann not exactly warm.
-
The "weather people" have even started talking about the Northwest not ever having a real winter this year. Now that they have started saying that, I expect we will get snow within the next couple of weeks!
-
I guess I don't have to ask if we are having a SAG Awards viewing party tomorrow. I am guessing we won't have one until The Oscars next month.
-
The SAG Awards are live on the Left Coast so no spoilers are needed.
-
I was just watching my SCROOGE one last time before I put it to bed for the season. I just now realized that Bob Crachett has a nicer overcoat than Scrooge does. LOL!

I'll probably record them (I didn't even know that they were on) because I'll be at a celebration celebrating the fact that the HR manager at my work is no longer the HR manager at my work! :D

Good evening. Thanks Ginny for your comment about liking the story of my case
-
DR Jeanne, when I was in college, my summer job was a bank teller. There were a lot of people who came in and wanted to chat. They wanted to talk about their day what they had planned etc. Sometimes they drove me crazy and sometimes I enjoyed it. So, that may be part of what happened. That being said, I do go a bit crazy with some of the tellers around here who are just overly friendly.
-
I don't get why people are protesting about American Sniper. Good grief. It's one person's story. It doesn't glorify war, just tells his experience and his family's experience. I've heard as a war related movie it's a lot less violent than most of them and less violent than the shoot 'em up films. I want to see it, but I'm not spending the money to go see many movies at the theater, so I'll wait until I can get it on TV
-
This is the first year I've decided not to see all the films nominated for Oscars before the show. I'm on a mission to pay off all my credit cards and save money this year. Since one trip to the movie with popcorn and pop is the same as a month of HBO, I'm opting for the HBO.
-
I was considering going to the movie tonight. Yesterday just for fun I stopped into the casino and played the penny slots. In 20 minutes I won $50!!! I cashed out and left immediately. I was in shock. I've never won on the slots before, of course I haven't played them too often. I didn't like the gambling boat when it was here. Now we have the Hard Rock as a land based casino. Lots easier to just stop in there
-
Which I do not want to do very often

Congrats, Cillaliz! I think the most that I've ever won is $20...and that only happened once.
-
Well, I must be off. My niece called and left a message earlier this morning, asking if I wanted some left-over chocolate cake. Of course, I would! She just called again, asking if I could stop at a local restaurant and get her and her mom (my sister) some food. Okay, I can, so I am.
Have a good rest of the evening, all. Be back later. :)

A future daughter-in-law's aunt, who just happens to enjoy hiking.

Greetings from Florida
-
We missed the snow avoided any serious traffic tie ups stopped for a nice dinner at a Cracker Barrel in Virginia and we checked into our hotel in North Carolina before 10 pm
-
Today we set off in the rain after a nice and free hot breakfast but still the traffic moved well
-
We left the rain behind once we got to Georgia although it remained over cast
-
As soon as we crossed the border into Florida the sun came out and it was nice ride to Kissimmee
-
We,ve unpacked and set up everything I did a bit of grocery shopping and now I am sitting in the living room with my feet up sipping my coffee (with butter pecan creamer) while vixdad naps
-
He did all the driving which unusual
-
I wonder wher chas and co are now
-
Hi, DRs Cillaliz and Vixmom!
-
Glad to hear the Vixfam's trip went smoothly - enjoy the sunshine!
-
I'm flipping between NBC's coverage of the figure skating nationals and the Michigan/Wisconsin basketball game.
-
Yes, we had a wonderful visit with Larry this afternoon. Much fun. Carrot cake, banana bread, juice and lots of talk about this and that. The snow is mostly gone here so our trek back home from uptown was easy.
We have been watching Brideshead Revisited on Acorn TV through Roku and Anthony is now watching the last episode of Mr. and Mrs. Murder, an Australian mystery program (also on Acorn TV through Roku). I Claudius is on Acorn and, believe it or not, I've never seen it. Perhaps we will began that after BR (4 more episodes).
-
Deb, glad to hear you're safe in Florida. Enjoy your time off!
-
oops, I left the computer on and was still signed in as I did some things around the house.
-
It was in the 50s here today. It's raining a little tonight. It may get down to freezing but it may not. This does not feel like winter in Iowa
-
Continued vacation fun vibes to the FAMILY VIX.
Congrats DR CILLA LIZ - isn't winning fun? I'm like you, I win a bit - I walk away! But we don't have a casino nearby.....all of my winnings have been on scratch off cards....I won $1000 in the last 18 months or so.

Wow! That's great. The casino is right downtown, about 4-5 blocks from my office. This is really the second time I've ever played the penny slots. Other 3 or 4 times I put in about 5 dollars and lost it in 5 minutes on a 25 cent machine and went home. I really just like to eat there
-
Congrats to Cilla on your penny slots win!
-
Good news about how vixmom's trip is going!
-
The biggest one-time slot haul for me was at a little place across from the Riviera in Las Vegas, on the nickel slots. About $35.
-
if I recall correctly.
-
And it was all in nickels falling out of the old-style machine. Endless nickels.
-
Gracie Gold is skating to "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Phantom of the Opera.
-
I am doing this from my iPhone as my internet is down.
DR Jane in case my answer to your question didn't go through. The answer is yes, but you don't need the #3105 anymore.
-
BK
The commentary you're doing for The Fantastiks will they have both versions of the film? I think I may have missed your answer.
-
And it was all in nickels falling out of the old-style machine. Endless nickels.
It's all electronic now. Would be more fun to hear the coins clinking out
-
Although I can't imagine how I would have picked up that many pennies
-
People from the establishment came by to help, and of course counted the nickels and cheerfully exchanged it all for paper money.
-
My mom liked that place across from the Riviera.
And it was the only one-dollar black jack place we could find in the main Strip area.
-
Yes, both cuts of The Fantasticks - we'll probably do the commentary on the theatrical release.
-
When I came home I wrote the rest of the commentary save for the final thing, which I'll do before the night is over. Then Sami and mom came by. We went for our celebration dinner first to Casa Vega, very good as always.
-
Then we came back and did some work here. I played her the new song, which she absolutely loved (it's about a compulsive snacker).
-
Then we read through all the monologues - I'd adjusted some from last time and all of it played really well. She's starting to get used to the rhythm in which I write, which is key. Mom and I laughed out loud several times. When it came time for a song, she sang it. This is turning into much more than I originally envisioned, and that's a good thing.
-
Then before she left I let her have a tiny little preview of something I started writing today - a song about a frazzled girl going to prom.
-
Now I think I'll go watch a little something. I so wish I could just sleep in tomorrow, but must be up by nine-thirty to go judge the singing contest.
-
People from the establishment came by to help, and of course counted the nickels and cheerfully exchanged it all for paper money.
Now you just put whatever denomination dollar bills you want to into the slot machine and play and then it prints a card when you cash out. You put that card in another machine and get your money. But it works.
-
Is anyone watching Grantchester? It's on after Downton. It's a Masterpiece Mystery. I recorded it and just watched the first episode. I like it!
-
If you were only going to go see one of the Oscar nominated films, what would you go to?
-
I enjoyed several this year - if I had to choose one I'd say The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything.
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone? You'd think it was a Saturday night or something.
-
Where are the errant and truant of this site???
-
Bitch-slapping from here to eternity and hell and back will soon be the order of the day.
-
Yes, both cuts of The Fantasticks - we'll probably do the commentary on the theatrical release.
That makes it sound like it's going to be a required purchase!
-
I enjoyed several this year - if I had to choose one I'd say The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything.
I still want to see both of these.
-
Guess I should write some notes while someone gives us a much-needed frenzy or nine.
-
I just watched "The Perils of Pauline" with Betty Hutton and John Lund. I'd never watched this all the way through. It was fun!

The real Pearl White died in 1938, and the movie came out in 1947.
