Title: JUDGMENT DAY AT THE FEDERAL

Well, you've read the notes (well, you will at midnight), the notes were judgmental, and now it is time for you to post until the judgmental cows come home.

We have a new over the air channel called Decades. It's another retro television station that airs on sub-channels of CBS affiliates. They are "binging" during the "soft launch". They are playing every episode of every series they will be airing in the running order. So far we have had The Millionaire, The Mothers-in-Law, Family Affair, F-Troop, Get Smart (it's in the middle of Get Smart right now). The Phil Silvers Show begins on January 28th and then The Doris Day Show. This goes on through May with lots of other shows then the network has their full launch and begins running a normal schedule

Here's the blurb for the new CD:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition world premiere soundtrack release, two scores on two CDs for a one-CD price:

ETHAN
GEORGE GROSZ’S INTERREGNUM

Music Composed and Conducted by Paul Glass

Ethan is a mystery.  It’s not only a lost film, it’s a film that most people have never heard of, let alone seen.  The 1964 low-budget film, shot in Techniscope and color, stars Robert Sampson as a priest working in a little village in the Philippines.  His faith is tested by a Muslim woman, he has a fall from grace, finds himself and his faith again, only to have a tragic end.   It had a very brief release and disappeared completely, having only one release in the early days of VHS.  It’s certainly not a great film, but it’s an interesting one that deals with interesting subjects and was especially bold for a 1964 film.

The one area in which Ethan soars is its score by composer Paul Glass.  Glass composed his first film score in 1957.  But his first mainstream film score for a major studio was in 1964 with the Paramount film Lady In a Cage, the same year as his score for Ethan.  He had two distinct styles for his film scores – avant-garde (Lady In a Cage) and a more accessible harmonic style (Ethan, and subsequently, Bunny Lake is Missing in 1965).  Ethan almost seems like a dry run for the Bunny Lake is Missing score, with which it definitely has things in common.   Ethan is a beautiful score, with haunting themes that are developed with wonderful variety throughout its playing time.

As a companion piece, we also include Paul Glass’s score for the short film George Grosz’s Interregnum.  Made in 1960, Interregnum was narrated by the legendary Lotte Lenya.   The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.   A portrait of Nazi brutality as told through the images of artist George Grosz, the film is powerful and memorable.  Glass’s score for Interregnum falls firmly into his avant-garde style and fits perfectly with the imagery of the film.

Both scores are presented complete and in stereo from Mr. Glass’s personal tapes.  We are thrilled to have two more Paul Glass scores on CD.  Lady In a Cage and Overlord and Hustle are also available on Kritzerland.

Paul Glass had a completely unique musical voice in film music back then and hearing his work today, his musical voice remains completely unique.

Ethan/Interregnum is limited to 1000 copies only and the two-CD set is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.   CDs will ship by the last week of February.  However, on average we usually ship two to four weeks ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Fun in FLORIDA for DR CHAS SMITH and DR VIXMOM & VIXDAD.

We did the Cape Canaveral history tour many years ago, and it was great!!!  We would stop a various places and get out to see things.  The bus driver would always say: "This is a brief stop NOT a camping spot."   So once we he stayed outside talking to another bus driver, and we were all seated and waiting, when he got back in his seat, I said: "This is not a camping spot."

He was not amused.

We were also the first ones to get in after a museum opened....there was a replica of the moon suit just inside the door.  As we stopped to look at it, it started to move.....and scared us.  There was a man inside who walked around.....pretty funny though.

I was also astounded at how SMALL the Mercury capsules were......not much bigger than a bathtub.

I was used to the spaceships in SCI FI movies that had hallways and lounge chairs and kitchens, etc.  I can't imagine flying around the earth in one of them....scary.

Oh....I especially wanted to get out and walk around on the runway that the space shuttles used when they came back to earth.....it was amazing to contemplate.

They go hundreds of thousands of miles in space and can guide the ship right back to a single spot in Florida.

I can't even find a spot in the WalMart parking lot.

I got home from therapy, had some breakfast, and then needed a nap.

I would never in my wildest imagination consider The Phantom of the Opera, a novel I've loved since a kid, a supernatural book.  Lot of gothic horror trappings, but, like Paul Gallico's Too Many Ghosts and the Bob Hope film The Ghost Breakers, there's not a real ghost in sight.

I would add to my list of books:
  A Christmas Carol
  Ghost Story
  The Woman In Black
  Something Wicked This Way Comes

And films:
The Woman In Black (BBC version, not the Radcliffe film)
  The Blair Witch Project
  The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
  The Canterville Ghost

So, Oscar fans, the same three people -- Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette and J.K. Simmons -- seem to be winning every single award going, and everyone says they're deserving of the Oscars. Does that take out any of the fun for you?

Love Moore and am glad Simmons is finally getting recognition, so I'm not questioning the performances here.

Really.  What are the dates?  We will put them on the calendar.  I wish we could say plan extra time and come up to us only we don't know if we will still be here.  The house will likely go on the market on April 1st.  Thing is, the chances of actually selling the house are slim.  This house is great but one does need people to be out there shopping.  Fortunately we don't have to move.

If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan this article is very interesting, especially about the pipe and robe.  Be sure to watch the short clip of the silent film and the obviously talented actor playing Holmes.  At the end of the story you can hear a recording of the actor.

DR Jane, ALA is June 26-30 and I will be ready to come home when it's over because I will have been in California since June 18.  The AAUW national convention is in San Diego, June 18-21.  We haven't brought the trip completely into focus yet, but I'll be working on it after Chicago.

I have put both of these dates on our calendar.  We have discussed a trip to San Diego.  If you want any suggestions for your travel plans between San Diego & San Francisco just ask.

Had a good rehearsal - put in the gal who was gone last week, blocked her solo number, which came out really well, and then continued.  Finished act one.  I skipped the opening of act two because two people had to leave early, but we got through two huge scenes and only have about twenty pages to go.  I'll go back to the act two opener on Thursday and get that done.

Topic of the Day:

A Christmas Carol (and Scrooge :) )
The Ghost Whisperer (guilty pleasure)
The Medium
The Others
The Shining
The Sixth Sense
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The Turn of the Screw (I saw the Britten opera when I was in college and it was riveting!)

And anything that I've read by Stephen King, which hasn't been anything in quite a few years.

I am feeling quite guilty about enjoying the sunny warm weather while the Vixter is snowed in and shoveling the drive way over and over.  When we spoke to her at 4 she said she had already shoveled three times and it looked as if she had never been out at all.  They also cancelled work they closed the Roadhouse because of the blizzard warnings

And on that note (A#), I'm going home.  I have a bit of laundry to do and some TV-show-recording-juggling to do. :-\

My dad wants me to record a show for him tonight and my niece called today and wanted me to record a show for her tonight, too and they both want DVDs, which I can do, but I ALSO have a show that I want to watch, and all three are on at the same time!  I think I can record my show up in my bedroom because I don't need to make a DVD of it (my DVD burner drawer won't open and now I can't record or even watch anything on that one :( ), but I need to make sure that it all works out.  If not, I'll have to check which are available on OnDemand.

Be back later!

DRS Ben and Jane:  No, it doesn't look like we'll get much snow.  It's snowing now but we're expecting 1 to 3 inches at most.  I imagine the schools will be closed or at least open late.  The government sometimes allows employees to arrive up to two hours late.  I'll check to see if that's the case in the morning.

Yes, no blizzards yet - not even a real snow.  It's like these HUGE rainstorms we were definitely getting late last year - five to six inches of rain, BEWARE.  We had maybe an half-inch over the course of about eight hours.

Saw Megan Hilty

I have noticed that many performers (including Ms Hilty) in their patter have too many ahs and ums in their speach.

But have no problem when they sing.

They really need someone during rehearsals with a clicker to use every time they use an ah, uhm, you know (Crutch words) it will cure them of doing it.

I am a member of Toastmasters International and that is used during our meetings. It has helped me and many others of my group to improve their public speaking.

Back from the final dress rehearsal for tomorrow night's program at the University of MN celebrating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. I am narrating pieces by Aaron Copland and the harrowing Arnold Schoenberg "A Survivor from Warsaw" with a 45 piece orchestra and a large men's choir. Other stunning items on the program include a gorgeous new commission, a festive piece by English composer William Walton, and Steve Reich's "Different Trains" with accompanying video.
