Last night, my wife and I watched THE WIZ.
I'd seen it on the stage and, also the movie when it was first released, but she'd seen neither.
I gotta tell you:
Although I like many of the original songs from the show, THE WIZ has got to be one of the most ill-conceived movies I've ever seen.
I love almost all of Sidney Lumet's films, but God did not mean for him to direct a musical. He had absolutely no idea where to place his camera.
And, Diana Ross as Dorothy....
I could go on, but I won't.

What am I doing here? I'm in the wrong story!

No groaning, perhaps. But what about Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons?
And some of the sets from THE WIZ were used in XANADU.
That almost got an illegal groan out of me, DR Jrand64.
Almost.
I caught myself just in time.
Maraczek's has been evicted.
But I feel like I should
Thank younElmore for the education
Which Mahagonny, DR Elmore?
I love that piece more than I can say.
I'll treat myself to some doughnuts or something nice on the way back. Yeah, that's the ticket.
I think it was TCB who asked if I'd be getting a recording of the show. I did indeed, but I've just determined that the DVD is copy-protected and I have never taken the trouble to learn how to, um, deal with that. Fortunately, I have a friend who can take care of such annoying little matters, so next time we get together (he's in another town) I'll have him work a little magic on it.

I listened to both the original 30-minute Mahagonny Songspiel and then the complete opera on Cappriccio with Anja Silja as Jenny. I prefer Lenya, but Silja does it in the correct keys. I wish that the Met broadcast with Stratas was on CD.
I see that the delightful, abridged BBC broadcast of SHE LOVES ME is on youtube:

Not on CD, but the Stratas Mahagonny telecast was FINALLY released on DVD a few years ago in the Levine 40th anniversary set...which I am totally remiss in not having acquired yet, either the CD or DVD set. Here it is, individually: http://goo.gl/UAsV25
It's also possible that my own off-the-air cassette tape of the afternoon broadcast might still play (it did as of several years ago...), in which case I must find the means of copying these things to CD. And of course I will provide a copy.

ChasSmith, if it's possible, I'd love to have a chance to study that disc...for instructional purposes only, of course. ;)
I have made pumpkin pies from scratch, from pumpkin. But I've done more apple. Not today though
Hello, everyone.
Saw that Stratas version back in high school when it was broadcast live. One of the life-changing moments of my youth.
As you can see, I have firmly instilled the motto "Safety first" into the Vixter's psyche
I spoke to the brisket chili cook this morning He says he cooks the brisket at 250 for about 8 hours in a pan sealed with foil then shreds it and puts it in the sauce: tomatoes, onion, peppers, cumin, chili powder ,garlic, salt, red pepper . season to taste

I was in standing room at the Met for the first performance of Mahagonny in 1979, one of the great nights in a theatre. the production was dazzling. I have never seen so many rich people get offended and walk out of a performance before or since; that opera really is meant to épater le bourgeois, and I would swear the house was half empty by the final great funeral march.
I just took the cassette tapes off the shelf to check out tomorrow and will let DR Ben know my findings.
Although I did not win for best decorated booth or a prize for my chili; it appears that it was only the judges who were unimpressed -
Many people (including the person who won best booth) said they thought mine was better - and I was the first one to run out of chili because of the number of people who came back for seconds (and thirds) and the number who came over and said they were told they had to try mine because it was so good.
DR Vixmom I am shocked you did not win for best booth, it really was great. It is ok for you to say you expected to win. What about the chili? Last we left you, you weren't too sure. After tasting the others did you like yours the best?
Never mind, I see you would have awarded someone else for the chili prize. I'm still curious how you felt about yours in the end.
DR Vixmom, next year you should have DR John judge the contest.
If the judges are different next year will you make your recipe again? It sounds like a hit.
Yes, DR Jeanne, and we still had some good selections - along with a lot of Danielle Steel :P

Sounds good to me! Wanna come to the Island of Long, John?

I have not made the same recipe twice so I am not sure-I would rather be a hit with the masses than the judges anyway
'
Funny thing at church today a number of people came up to me and said softly "you was robbed" or variations thereof
and many also asked for my recipe which was a little difficult to do because I made it up as I went along
Congrats to DR JANE on the organized socks.

I thought since this one was soooo popular you might make an exception and repeat it. Of course, if you didn't write down what you did it will come out slightly different anyway ;)
Does she have room in her freezer for extra?
I seem to have DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE playing on TCM right now.
It's been raining pretty much all night and day since last night. I wonder how much longer it'll last.
I have a dear friend I've known for nearly 45 years, and I think the world of him. I will mention no names but DR Ginny knows him. He's on him second marriage, and I liked his first wife very much. However, I cannot stand his current wife. I do not like her, and I never want to be around her. I'm due to see him soon to catch up, and I always worry that she will either tag along or I will get a lot of pressure about coming to New Jersey to visit for a weekend.
Sorry to hear about Cillaliz's bronchitis. Bronchitis can be quite nasty and difficult to get rid of.
FEEL-BETTER-PRONTO VIBES TO CILLA!
From DR Cilla:Oh, I know. Actually, I've found store bought pumpkin is usually better than my homemade lolQuoteI have made pumpkin pies from scratch, from pumpkin. But I've done more apple. Not today though
Any other day I would have figured the pie was from scratch, but not yesterday or maybe today. I hope I find you feeling better as I read the posts.

Robert Durst was arrested in New Orleans today and will extradited to Los Angeles where he will face murder charges.
I was having some nasty back and neck problems last week and was not fit to be around man or beast--or DRs. I'm hoping they're now under control.

I have the Stratas DVD,but I would want to watch it, not listen to it, as I worked. I also have the Salzburg Festival DVD and the lousy Lupone-McDonald production from the Los Angeles Opera. I want the Spanish production from Madrid, which is sung in English.
