Title: THE UNDERSTUDIES
Post by: bk on March 15, 2015, 01:04:02 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were understudies, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their understudies are on today.

Today, I have no plans to go anywhere except to visit my sister for a little while.  Otherwise, I will stay home and learn my lines!  We have to be off-book by tomorrow!  I'm not quite there yet, but I'm getting there...slowly but Shirley. ;)

I have just time to savor one cup and then I must be off to the playhouse to bring everything home.

Not really looking forward to the schlepping (it's time for that familiar refrain, "why oh why oh why oh, didn't I take up the piccolo in Ohio?"), but I look forward to having everything back home and set up.

With all the talk of pie yesterday I thought of Don McLean's Bye Bye American Pie.

Here is the poster from the show that never was. Five days after the music died.

It's another overcast and gloomy day in Manhattan.  I have no plans to go anywhere, so I will do some tidying, maybe write a few notes, and perhaps catch up on some DVDs.

Last night, my wife and I watched THE WIZ.

I'd seen it on the stage and, also the movie when it was first released, but she'd seen neither.

I gotta tell you:

Although I like many of the original songs from the show, THE WIZ has got to be one of the most ill-conceived movies I've ever seen.

I love almost all of Sidney Lumet's films, but God did not mean for him to direct a musical.  He had absolutely no idea where to place his camera.

And, Diana Ross as Dorothy....

I could go on, but I won't.

DR CHAS SMITH I use this program.

It's pretty good for copying all discs......and it's free and doesn't contain viruses or extra programs you don't want.

When you open it up the first time, you are asked if you want to BUY the full version, but you can just click NO, DON'T ASK AGAIN....

When it opens, put your disk in the drive to let it copy....after it's done, change it for a blank disc.

It says it makes Region Specific DVD's to Non Region, but I have never used that feature.

Not on CD, but the Stratas Mahagonny telecast was FINALLY released on DVD a few years ago in the Levine 40th anniversary set...which I am totally remiss in not having acquired yet, either the CD or DVD set.  Here it is, individually:   http://goo.gl/UAsV25

It's also possible that my own off-the-air cassette tape of the afternoon broadcast might still play (it did as of several years ago...), in which case I must find the means of copying these things to CD.  And of course I will provide a copy.

Of course, he's in New York and you're in Connecticut, but you and I both know a person (his initials are AM, not morning) who does that kind of copying and it's not Elmore, although he could be used as a reference in case you're wondering about quality of transfer.

The Iolanthe was really lovely.  I always forget how close to tragedy it gets at the end of act two, but I still laugh when the much-desired shepherdess Phyllis tells her lover Strephon, after learning that he is half fairy and his mother and aunts, who are fairies - though centuries old - look like pretty young ladies, says "Whenever I see you kissing a very young lady I shall know it's an elderly relative."

Although I did not win for best decorated booth or a prize for my chili; it appears that it was only the judges who were unimpressed -

Many  people (including the person who won best booth) said they  thought mine was better - and I was the first one to run out of chili because of the number of people who came back for seconds (and thirds) and the number who came over and said they were told they had to try mine because it was so good.

DR Vixmom I am shocked you did not win for best booth, it really was great.  It is ok for you to say you expected to win.  What about the chili?  Last we left you, you weren't too sure.  After tasting the others did you like yours the best?

Never mind, I see you would have awarded someone else for the chili prize.  I'm still curious how you felt about yours in the end.

Saw that Stratas version back in high school when it was broadcast live. One of the life-changing moments of my youth.

I was in standing room at the Met for the first performance of Mahagonny in 1979, one of the great nights in a theatre.  the production was dazzling.  I have never seen so many rich people get offended and walk out of a performance before or since; that opera really is meant to épater le bourgeois, and I would swear the house was half empty by the final great funeral march.

IT snowed last night.  I really don't want to see anymore snow!

I had to get up at 6am to go to a swim meet. Luckily the place was only under 5 minutes away.  I was very tired when I got home.

I spoke to the brisket chili cook this morning   He says he cooks the brisket at 250 for  about 8 hours in a pan sealed with foil then shreds it and puts it in the sauce: tomatoes, onion, peppers, cumin, chili powder ,garlic, salt, red pepper .  season to taste

That sounds interesting.

Oh my god.

I had no idea there had been any such audience reactions.

I clearly remember the things I was involved in around that time, and while I wish I had pulled my head out of my ass and found the means to go from LA to NYC to see it, I am so grateful that I had the presence of mind to sit that ass in front of the radio and TV to take it all in as best I could.

Most of my cassette tapes went to the book sale and most were still there when I left at 2:30.  Videotapes don't sell well, either.

Today we finished organizing the areas of our bathroom I was saving for last.  Now I need to do the same for 3 large drawers in our closest, and then we are done.  My goal is to complete these by tomorrow.  Two of those drawers are holding paperwork I've been dropping into them as I've sorted the rest of the house-groan.

I like mine very much actually - I left it simmering for  24 hours in  the slow cooker and by the end although it was sweet it was not overwhelmingly so , just a slight sweet foretaste, a hint of the brown sugar and then the  chili peppers kicked in for slow heat but not so tremendously so that you were left with tears in your eyes like some of the chili  recipes last night.   I would make this again.

But the brisket based one had a deep, rich. beefy flavor it was also a medium chili, a nice bit of heat towards the end but not a burning hot. I think I might try this sometime, just for us.

I have not made the same recipe twice so I am not sure-I would rather be a hit with the masses than the judges anyway

Funny thing at church today a number of people came up to me and said softly  "you was robbed" or variations thereof
and many also asked for my recipe which was a little difficult  to do because I   made it up as I went  along

I thought since this one was soooo popular you might make an exception and repeat it.  Of course, if you didn't write down what you did it will come out slightly different anyway ;)

I might - perhaps instead of using ground beef for the basis I will use brisket and then add the brown sugar - sort of a mish mash between the two I should experiment through out the year

I do  know I have to make it at  least once more for my mother- she loved it  and was really disapointed that there were no leftovers for her to take home

I have a dear friend I've known for nearly 45 years, and I think the world of him.  I will mention no names but DR Ginny knows him.  He's on him second marriage, and I liked his first wife very much.  However, I cannot stand his current wife.  I do not like her, and I never want to be around her.  I'm due to see him soon to catch up, and I always worry that she will either tag along or I will get a lot of pressure about coming to New Jersey to visit for a weekend.

Back from our two-show day and exhausted.  The matinee was fantastic and that understudy did brilliantly - getting every laugh and rocking the house with her solo.

The second understudy, who only went on in the evening, just needed more rehearsal and time.  I'd given her some notes yesterday, but she wasn't in the place where she could really make them work as well as they needed to work.  She got through it (she was playing Sandy's role), and she was fine, but the character needed more fire - I must say, though, the other cast members notched it up so that nothing seemed amiss, which it really wasn't anyway.

I just finished watching "The Three Caballeros" on TCM.  I've never seen this and didn't realize that it's basically a musical travelogue of South America.  There's a lot of music and it's VERY colorful.  I'd never thought about this, but I noticed that it's an RKO picture.  When did Walt Disney Pictures or Buena Vista come into being?

I have the Stratas DVD,but I would want to watch it, not listen to it, as I worked.  I also have the Salzburg Festival DVD and the lousy Lupone-McDonald production from the Los Angeles Opera.  I want the Spanish production from Madrid, which is sung in English.

I got this 10-CD set of The Complete Recordings of Bert Brecht & Kurt Weill (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F2V02H8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) back in December.  It includes the 1956 complete(?) recording with Lotte Lenya on 2 CDs.

Just had to share. :)
