Well, you've read the notes, the notes were damn notes, and now it is time for you to post until the damn cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ANFRACTUOUS!
-
Morning all.
That is all.

Good morning, all! It is another day of running about. I will get to my accountant this morning and deal with a tax inquiry. Then, City Center, where Joshie has workwatng for me. I believe he and Rob will be off at an "ethnic orchestra" rehearsal with the bazouki and other Greek instruments for ZORBA.
DR George, I am very fond of Tartuffe, but it's really one of Moliere's more serious comedies. There used to be on VHS a production from the Royal shakespeare Cmpany with Anthony Sher that was quite good; it's never shown up on DVD.
This one's also very good:

I've got that version of Tartuffe with Donald Moffett. Haven't had the time to watch it yet. Maybe later this week.

I saw Married To Broadway last night.
Great singers all and one of the best versions of Music of The Night (and I'v heard many, many version of the years) But the who thing is crying out for a reality tv series. What follows is mostly true.
There was husband and wife who met doing Les Miz (Original run), their daughter, the protege, the competitor (and last minute replacement for the originally booked singer) who replaced the husband in Les Miz and then was replaced by the husband. Finally there was the mistress (as it was joked) who was the first American to play Eponine in the original Broadway version and worked with the husband and wife.. The husband and wife also were producers of Tale of Two Cities which the mistress appeared and the original booked singer was also in, but he was currently playing the title role in long running musical and I guess couldn't get out to appear in the show. The protege has been studying voice with the husband and wife since he was nine and (in at least my version) is dating the daughter although he might be gay. They all live together in one big house in New Jersey and when they need to get into NYC they are driven across the river in a tug boat by the protege who also is a tug boat captain. Also at home are two identical twin boys (Think Full House) with a grandma who acts and looks younger than her years. There is also 12 year son who is an right wing arch conservative

I don't know any of them all that well, but I could probably enjoy all the Sirks when in the right mood.
My first, or only, memory of watching one prior to my adult life was seeing IMITATION OF LIFE at a drive-in with my family, which I always remembered being at the Lauderdale Drive-In on Broward Blvd. (I knew you'd want to know that.) As a kid, I probably wasn't following the story all that closely, but I always remembered the scene at Coney Island, and Juanita Moore made a big impression on me. I am looking at IMDb now, and she just died last year, on January 1st, 2014. And you know when she was born? I'll tell you, since I'm looking right at it. October 19th, 1914. One hundred years, folks. Nearly a hundred and one.
I have to admit that what turned my attention to Sirk's films in recent years was seeing Todd Haynes' FAR FROM HEAVEN, after which I watched ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS which I'd probably only seen in childhood on the TV. It's all great stuff. I hope somebody lists some good sudsers other than Sirk's, because I'm blank on any right now. (Coffee!)

DR MIKE that story makes me dizzy.

I trust DR Elmore is fighting off whatever he felt he was coming down with yesterday?
That's both a question and vibes that it is so! :)

I am actually procrastinating, DR ChasSmith. I have too much to accomplish this week before the Encores! orchestra readthrough on Tuesday. Joshie needs my help this week.
-
Greetings from Toyland! Nice to have the internet back up.
-
Work is good DR ELMORE.
-
Just call me Sam Spade.....I have solved the mystery.
My mater, who did alterations for many years, tells me that as the waist size in jeans and trousers increases....the "bottom" is bigger so that the crotch is lower. So if you wore size 32/32 jeans.....if you buy the larger waist....say 38 or 40.....you inseam will be short because your zipper is closer to the ground.
Hence my new jeans that I bought yesterday.....40/30 fit perfectly....even a bit loose, which is nice.
-
Well, I have never met a sudser that I didn't like......so I will just name a few:
Imitation of Life (1959) for reasons that MR BK wrote about in the notes and DR CHAS SMITH mentioned in his post.
Madame X - a Ross Hunter production with Miss Lana Turner is outstanding! She also did Portrait in Black with Hunter which wasn't quite as good, but it did have Anna May Wong....and Sandra Dee and John Saxon.
A Summer Place, Rome Adventure, Susan Slade, Parrish - all Delmer Daves-Warner Bros. Spectaculars that starred Mr Troy Donahue. His leading ladies included Susan Pleshette, Connie Stevens, Sandra Dee, and Diane McBain.
Youngblood Hawke, another Delmer Daves special this one starring Mr. Novak himself, James Franciscus and Pleshette and Genevieve Page, who needed a English dialog coach....I can't understand hardly anything she is saying. She is beautiful though.
Page doesn't talk much in this trailer - but she makes Eva Gabor sound like John Gielgud.

In other news, I just accepted a short gig playing for a couple of singers performing songs from MAN OF LA MANCHA for a fundraiser Sunday afternoon.
The venue, about a 45-minute drive from here, sounds interesting: http://thegarytheolivia.com/ -- and I remember how our musical director for SHE LOVES ME was especially happy to have landed that post for their LA MANCHA in August.

Sounds like fun DR CHAS SMITH!

And farewell to Toyland! I am off to City Center now.

Tuesday morning greetings! Just a quick peek in before I leave for Dayton to have lunch with my grantwriter friends. I haven't seen them since early December.

I can't wait to hear those "ethnic" instruments!

And farewell to Toyland! I am off to City Center now.
Have a good day, DR Elmore! I'd love to be there for ZORBA...

Would JOHNNY BELINDA be considered a "sudser"?
That's the first one I really like that comes to mind..

Well, I just got notified that they really could use my presence at today's ANNIE rehearsal, so I shall grant them that wish. Which means I now need to get off my own butt here and get some things done beforehand.

You could have told them "tomorrow."

Yes, if only I weren't at the dentist getting a filling "tomorrow".

Home from City Center. I have two numbers "The Bend In the Road" and "The Top of the Hill."

From DR Jennifer:
Don't turn your wifi on. I am pretty sure that if you move they still wouldn't delete your account unless 1) they know you moved 2) your card expired.
I thought of that, however, I will want my wifi on my Nook if I don't have a computer.
I am thinking, if there is time, we should buy me a large laptop and transfer all my stuff from my computer to the laptop. I could use a new computer so why put mine into storage.
-
From DR Jennifer:
What would be annoying having to renew your library card every year? How else will they know that people still live in the area? We have to show proof of residence.
Once when I didn't use my card for awhile I received an email asking to verify I still lived here. Using the card on a regular basis no one asks. I can't recall any area I lived that required me to prove my residency every year. Of course if I went into the library on a regular basis it wouldn't be a big deal. For some people it is difficult to go to the library.
-
From DR George:
All the books that I downloaded are still there because it doesn't sync up with Amazon and OverDrive to turn them in and remove them from my Kindle.
Don't you return your library books?
I decided I do not like using my kindle app on my Nook and will only do so if it is the only way to read the book, or Keith already purchased it.
-
DR TCB the library books are automatically returned once they expire, if your wifi is on. You can't extend the renewal.
-
DR MIKE that story makes me dizzy.
Since I have a headache I could not, or chose not to, follow it ;D

Thanks for the info, Larry. Unfortunately, the library where I work doesn't have "Tartuffe" on any VHS or DVD format. I did place a hold on an L.A. Theatre Works sound recording, so I'll listen to that.

Congrats, ChasSmith! MAN OF LA MANCHA is one of only two shows that I performed in two different productions (the other is Cannibal! The Musical!). I played Sancho Panza in the second production. That was the first time that I had ever played one of the leads of a show. :)

Don't you return your library books?
I decided I do not like using my kindle app on my Nook and will only do so if it is the only way to read the book, or Keith already purchased it.
I return my physical (paper) books, of course, but whether my Wi-Fi is turned on or not, the e-books that I check out from the library for my Kindle are automatically "checked in" in OverDrive when my loan period is over and the next patron DOES get to check them out. That happens even when I don't sync up my Kindle through Wi-Fi and the e-books aren't actually deleted from my Kindle. Those are two separate functions.

I always click on the return/delete button when I finish reading. I think only once or twice has the library actually had to take the book back.

It might be that way because you have a Kindle app on a Nook and I have an actual Kindle. The problem with OverDrive is that (maybe it's for Kindle e-books) once an e-book is checked out, it cannot be checked back in or returned. It's no longer available for any other patrons until YOUR checkout loan period has expired, even if you finished the e-book very quickly. It's not an option at all.

DR George, do you have Netflix? They have both the Broadway Archive TARTUFFE and the F.W, Murnau German silent film. which id like to see.

Oh, dear, did I forget to log out when I left for Dayton this morning? Sorry!

I obviously didn't mean to never turn on your wifi. Obviously you will need it since your Nook is a tablet. I just meant if you were in the middle of a book and wanted to be sure that you could finish it.

If you didn't have to prove your residency then did you just stop using your card? I guess this is the first library where you are getting e-books (obviously you can't take out real books if you've moved). Here you have to show them your driver's license every year. it makes sense since residents don't have to pay to use the library but others do (if you don't live in the suburb).

DR George is very odd. He never turns on his wifi which I still don't understand. He puts his e-books on his kindle through his computer. This is impractical for people who need to use their wifi or who have tons of e-books. My favorite part about e-books is that i just turn on the wifi and the books appear. I absolutely hate having to plug in my kindle to my computer to put e-books on that way.

I don't borrow e-books from the library. But i do borrow a lot of lendable kindle e-books from friends through amazon. I always return the e-book as soon as i finish reading it. But i find it easier to do it on my computer/through my amazon account. I just delete it and it gets returned immediately.

That does not seem right. You should be able to return your e-book when you are done so the next person can have it.

I will soon be headed to the "goof" rehearsal for ANTIGONE....whatever that is.

The Overdrive thing only applies to Kindle books. I use Overdrive and I take e-pub files. They have a return option. If you take the file as a Kindle, you're correct, you can't return the book but you can return an e-pub file anytime. Anthony ran into that problem because one of the libraries he uses has a limit of 5 e-books. He reached that limit and because all the books were Kindle files he couldn't return the books and he couldn't take any more out from that library until the lending period was over.

DR Ben I use my Overdrive app to access my library. It works for both e-pub & kindle.

Is there something I'm missing on this Kindle stuff? When you "borrow" a book an electronic copy is sent to your Kindle/computer. Clearly, no one needs to "return" an electronic copy so another person can "borrow" it. That's just a little conceit set up by the system designers. But why, is my question. Do they not want too many copies out there? There may indeed be a good reason for this, but it just seems unnecessarily complicated to me.
Does anyone know the rationale?

On the subject of food (a favorite HHW topic), I just tried some Milton's crackers. They're really good! I've always liked Milton's whole-grain bread, but didn't know they made crackers, too. Not gluten-free, unfortunately, but tasty.

Thank you. I am having a lazy day and reading. I hate not walking and hope it makes a difference.

I will have to try the Milton's bread after we move. I could not eat an entire loaf before then.

My guess is the publishers control this and libraries. I understand the reasoning. Libraries would never need to purchase more than one book if everyone could download it at the same time.

Jennifer, you are correct in that it is impractical for people who need (or even just want) to use their Wi-Fi, but I don't. My Kindle is only a book reader, so I don't need the Wi-Fi for anything else. I also don't ever search for titles on my Kindle. I prefer to search my library's OverDrive site (or Amazon, if I'm actually going to purchase a title) and I am always on a computer when I do that. I also need to plug in my Kindle to charge the battery. Since that happens at the same time, I don't have to charge my Kindle separately. I realize that you want the convenience of not having to tether your device to a computer, but I don't find it an inconvenience...for me, it's a preference. :)

Our library has a limit of eight downloads at any one time. I really like Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files" series. There are two different 6-book downloads...6 complete books in one download which count as one title in regards to our eight title limit. I absolutely cannot read all six books in the longest check-out period, which for us is 21 days. Since I never sync up with Wi-Fi, I have both of these 6-book downloads on my Kindle and can take however long I need to take to read them. Since they aren't removed from my Kindle because I don't turn on my Wi-Fi, I set my check-out period to one week so that I'm not officially keeping the title from other patrons for any longer than I have to. I've read nine books in "The Dresden Files" so far, and have three left, but I've had them on my Kindle since last year.
-
I hope I'm not beating a dead horse with this. ;)

I've finished my Joshie assignment, and I have to think about dinner.
I'm going in late to City Center tomorrow. Joshie has asked me to see ON THE TOWN with him tomorrow night. Our friend John Bell is conducting. I look forward to seeing it again,

DR Jeanne, at the moment I do not feel great: too much vitamin C and Tylenol with codeine but this will do till I see someone next week at the NYU dental clinic.
I'm a bit sleepy at the moment, but I've been on the go for 12 hours now and it's time to chill for a but.

I don't borrow e-books from the library. But i do borrow a lot of lendable kindle e-books from friends through amazon. I always return the e-book as soon as i finish reading it. But i find it easier to do it on my computer/through my amazon account. I just delete it and it gets returned immediately.
I put the first 6 books on my wish list. I don't have any holds left.
So they don't actually need to take your book back to give it to the next person. I'm relieved to know this. I automatically check everything out for 21 days but I usually return books sooner than that.
-
I hope I'm not beating a dead horse with this. ;)
No, and I just learned two new bits of info including a new book to read.
-
Too much dental work going on at HHW these days.
Well, my visit "tomorrow" is just for a small filling replacement -- a filling that, though it's on one of my upper front and center teeth, I seem to be totally unaware that I even had. I trust I shall be enlightened on this matter "tomorrow".
-
DR George is very odd.
Sing it! :D
-
Hello!
-
DR George is very odd.
Sing it! :D
"Madam, I am not an Odd Fellow!"
That was an actual line that I had in Gypsy when I played George, Uncle Jocko's assistant.
;D

Oh, no...Comedy genius, father of funny commercials Stan Freberg dies (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/entertainment/20150407/US--Obit-Stan.Freberg/). :(
-
Just heard about that on the radio coming home tonight.
-
Home from 3 1/2 hours of dancing. Tired.
-
TOD 3:
The movies based on the works of Marcel Pagnol, including the Fanny trilogy and Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources.
-
Starting to watch "Life Itself," the documentary about Roger Ebert.
-
That's definitely on my "list" of things to watch.
-
Gratuitous Post #100!
-
And on that note (G#), I'm leaving work. I have some TV watching to do, and maybe even some laundry...if I decide to do that. But either way, I'm outa here.
Until later!
-
Had a quick meal (need to eat again - I only had small scoops of chicken salad and egg salad - I'd ordered fries, but only had about four of them, as Sami decimated that plate quickly), then we had a long and really fruitful work session.
-
Made egg salad for lunch today.
-
Ate chicken salad today, and was thinking about egg salad for tomorrow.
-
I like both of these better than tuna salad...except for the one I had just this past weekend which is probably first tuna salad that has EVER satisfied in my ever so humble opinion. It had been made with "just enough" mayonnaise, keeping it from being a runny milky bland mess, and just a couple of extra ingredients from the norm made it absolutely delicious. I need to get the recipe. No, actually, strike that. I shouldn't have to. It just ain't that hard to do.
-
Ate chicken salad today, and was thinking about egg salad for tomorrow.
Which came first, the chicken salad or the .... Oh never mind.
-
Well, I have never met a sudser that I didn't like......so I will just name a few:

Perhaps I am wrong, but when Mr. Franciscus pushes that man down the stairs, isn't that the PSYCHO house staircase?

I am sorry, but I haven't the slightest idea what any of you are talking about. This whole conversation left me feeling more stupid than usual. I go to the library to borrow books. I go to Amazon to buy books. The rest is just chaos.

I had lunch with my friend, Sharry, today. While I was being sick on the high seas, she and her husband were in NYC seeing some shows. They saw either five or six shows, all of them in preview.
-
They saw THE VISIT for the second time. They saw it last year when they were in Virginia. Sharry loved it, but she doubts it will be a success on Broadway.
-
They went to New York specifically to see their friend Brad Oscar in SOMETHING ROTTEN. They said the show is hysterical and that Brad should get a Tony nomination for his performance.
-
This is very sad. I am posting about my friends' trip to NYC.
-
Have I know life of my own??
-
Ahhhhh, apparently not.
-
Pretty sad.
-
Oh, now about my own life...........
-
DR Ben I use my Overdrive app to access my library. It works for both e-pub & kindle.
That wasn't what I meant by my comment. I know that Overdrive works with Kindle. I'm saying that Overdrive lets you return e-pub ebook files which are different from Kindle book files. You cannot return a Kindle ebook once it's checked out but you can return an e-pub book when you've finished it. It's why I will not take a Kindle ebook if I have a choice between Kindle and e-pub.
-
When I got home from lunch, I decided to take a short nap.
-
I ended up sleeping for four hours.
-
I want to see The Visit. Even if John Doyle's name is attached.
-
Five!
-
Life Itself is so gooooood I can't get any work done.
-
Is there something I'm missing on this Kindle stuff? When you "borrow" a book an electronic copy is sent to your Kindle/computer. Clearly, no one needs to "return" an electronic copy so another person can "borrow" it. That's just a little conceit set up by the system designers. But why, is my question. Do they not want too many copies out there? There may indeed be a good reason for this, but it just seems unnecessarily complicated to me.
Does anyone know the rationale?
My guess is the publishers control this and libraries. I understand the reasoning. Libraries would never need to purchase more than one book if everyone could download it at the same time.
Exactly.
The libraries have absolutely no control over this. It's all in the hands of the publishers. Libraries are at the mercy of the publishers when it comes to e-book distribution.
-
Now THAT is a nap!
-
Life Itself is so gooooood I can't get any work done.
Is there something you want to tell us, John?
-
Ben, how nice to see you here tonight!
-
I want to see The Visit. Even if John Doyle's name is attached.
Believe me, it's not worth it. And John Doyle has little to do with that opinion. And I agree with Sharry that it will not be a success on Broadway.
-
And I second Sharry's opinion of Something Rotten.
-
I would still love to see THE KING AND I.
-
I love Kellie O'Hara.
-
Ben, did you see SOMETHING ROTTEN?
-
If so, will there be a radio review in the near future?
-
My radio reviews are at the mercy of the people in Wales but I hope that it will play sometime in the near future.
-
Yes, it's hysterical (Something Rotten) and I hope that it's a hit. Just because we love it (Sharry and I and the preview audiences) doesn't mean it will be financially successful and have a healthy run but I hope that it will be successful, both critically and financially.
-
I hope it is a hit, for Brad's sake.
-
People come, people go; it's HHW.
-
Life Itself is so gooooood I can't get any work done.

Today was a terrible day at work
-
Vixdad had to work late but I was home by 8
-
Vixter kindly treated me to dinner at the Texas Roadhouse
-
Jealous of dinner. But not of your day at work, DR vixmom.
-
Then I took a hot shower and put on my comfy fleece jimjams
-
Jealous of dinner. But not of your day at work, DR vixmom.
It was truly bad I turned on my computer at 7:45 and at 7:47 I received an email that guaranteed the day was shot
-
Chas the Vixter had a combo platter, filet and a 1/2 rack of ribs with mashed and broccoli
-
I had the Texas rib eye with loaded baked potato mushrooms and a house salad with ranch dressing
-
We both had freshly baked hot rolls ( we watched them pulled from the oven and popped into a basket ) with slatherings of honey butter
-
Once snugly in my jimjams and cozy in my recliner with my velour blanket I enjoyed a Keurig brewed coffee liberally laced with Godiva caramel liqueur
-
You always have Costco, Vixmom.
-
So the day ended well but I know that tomorrow I am walking into Problems (yes with a capital P and that rhymes with T and that stands for Trouble)
-
One of the more interesting images in the deleted scenes of Life Itself is a photo of Roger Ebert sitting at a grand piano in his home with a copy of the The Complete Lyrics of Ira Gershwin next to the music.
The movie never said he played the piano, but I recall he was a fan of musicals. He even gave At Long Last Love a three-star review.

There were moments today when I was seriously considering that option

I can remember that happening to me a few times, via a phone call or an email. There was never anything worse.
-
Well I must get some sleep
-
Good night all
-
Finally I got back in - at least for the moment.
-
Did I miss Vixmom again?
-
Was it something that I said?
-
Hello, George. I cleared the room again.
-
DR Ben I use my Overdrive app to access my library. It works for both e-pub & kindle.

It must be the way my library has set up their OverDrive account, because once a title is checked out no matter what format (Kindle, pdf, epub, etc.), it can't be returned. You can return a title after you hold is placed and you've been notified that it's available, but not once you've actually checked it out.
-
Okay, I guess I am not needed here anymore.
-
I just finished watching "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Their plot doth thicken.
-
Okay, I guess I am not needed here anymore.
Tom, you're never not needed!
-
~~~Vibes of All Kinds for Vixmom!!~~~
-
Watched the little puff piece about Imitation of Life - nice for the Juanita Moore interview alone.
-
Then I cleaned up some stuff in the working script of the Sami show and finished all but two lines of the new song I've been playing with - it's really cute, I think - called Note to Boys. So, I know there will be one more song - a ballad. So out of fourteen songs there will be three ballads, although a couple of others, while not ballads, have lilting kind of music.
