Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a statement of fact, and now it is time for you to post until the factual cows come home.

Good morning, all!  This will be a long day at Toyland. I really have no idea at what time Fed Ex will show up, soI am taking some work to do while I wait.

DR DanM, good to see you back.  You've had a lot of folk here worried about you. It's good to know you are alive.

The Man from Philadelphia continues to irritate.  A year of silence, and suddenly, now that he's breaking his butt to close down Toyland, the questions start coming: do you have? do you know where? do you know the state of?

He shipped everything last year to the Library of Congress last May or June, and he caused a lot of turmoil for me and my colleagues at the time. There's nothing in the office at this point and I can access nothing.  So, I guess the answer t his inquiries is: No.

There was talk about food yesterday later in the postings.

has anyone ever tried the foods mentioned in Food Glorious Food.

Hot sausage and mustard (Depending on what the sausage is made of)
While we're in the mood cold jelly and custard (If the cold jelly is aspic..forget it)
Pease pudding and saveloys (Pease pudding* sounds interesting and saveloys (more sausage)
Just picture a great big steak --Fried, roasted or stewed. (I don't think I could have a steak fried or stewed)
Piled peaches and cream about six feet high (really sounds decadent)

* contains split yellow or Carlin peas, water, salt, and spices, often cooked with a bacon or ham joint.

Here is a recipe for piled peaches and cream

INGREDIENTS

Crust
2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1/4 cup chilled solid vegetable shortening, cut into pieces
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
6 tablespoons (about) ice water
Filling:
5 pounds medium peaches, peeled, pitted, sliced
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Vanilla ice cream

Prep
For crust:
Combine flour, sugar and salt in large bowl. Add butter and shortening; using fingertips, rub in until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add vinegar. Using fork, mix in enough water to form moist clumps. Gather dough into ball; divide dough into 2 equal portions. Flatten each portion into disk. Wrap each in plastic; chill 45 minutes. (Can be made 2 days ahead. Keep refrigerated. Soften slightly at room temperature before rolling out.)

For filling:
Preheat oven to 400°F. Combine peaches, sugar, flour and spices in large bowl; toss to mix well.

Roll out 1 dough disk on floured surface to 13-inch round. Transfer to 9-inch-diameter glass pie plate. Transfer peaches to crust, mounding in center. Roll out second dough disk to 13-inch round. Roll up dough on rolling pin and unroll atop peaches. Trim edges of both crusts to 3/4-inch overhang. Fold edges over; press to seal. Crimp edges. Cut 6 slits in top crust to allow steam to escape.

Bake pie until crust is golden and juices bubble thickly through slits, covering edges of crust with foil if browning too quickly, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Cool pie 3 hours. Serve with ice cream.

I went to look at the Apple Watches last night. I haven't worn a watch in maybe 8 years. It was strange to have one on my wrist. The samples you can try on don't work. The ones that do work are fixed to the counters.

I think I will pass on them.

BTW

If you are thinking about buying one consider getting the Sports Watch and upgrading the watch band. It still comes out cheaper than the regular watch.

What it has to offer at the moment doesn't impress me and the biggest screen is too small for my fingers

ANTIGONE was good last night.  We had a small, quiet audience.  The opening night reception in the Great Hall!

It's always nice that the kids - er young people - in the cast want to introduce me to their fiances and parents and friends that attend.  They always have nice comments to make, and they are usually dressed up for the theatre which is also very nice.

I think it also surprises some of them that I know so many people who come to see the show and get talked to by so many different kinds of folks.  I think some of them think I just showed up one day and don't really exist outside of rehearsals.

I have to sit down at the plastics today and program the keyboard for ANNIE.  We're back at it Monday for tech week, and I want to walk in with this completely done.  Thankfully, this is a VERY easy task compared to the last few shows in which I've played an actual synth book.  My main challenge is finding a few good vintage sounding "R.M.I." patches.

(I am SO glad I asked DR Elmore about the R.M.I. business last week!  I hadn't had much contact with any of those particular show scores in the past few years that I've been involved with keyboard work, so had never questioned what the actual electronic instruments had been.  It was GREATLY inspiring to observe the work done with the keyboard book in ZORBA the other day.  Since I don't have a Mac (which will be remedied...someday...), I can't use the applications that would lead me to all of those great sounds, but I will do my best with what my keyboard provides.)

I just called and spoke to someone who said they don't expect the repairs to be completed until Tuesday:o

That's some review DR ELMORE......I still don't think I want to see it.  I have never watched the show, so I am not the best one to comment on such an enterprise.

I think the success of a show like this on television or Broadway - though not necessarily Las Vegas - says more about the audience than the project.

Last night at "Laughing Stock," we had a small but LOUD audience!  Several people from TAO's "In a Dark, Dark House" were there and they certainly got all the "in" jokes...jokes that other actors or at least theater people would get that "normal" audiences might not.  And they laughed loudly and longly.  A great way to start our last weekend!

Here's the audition notice for the live, improvised soap opera that I mentioned a couple of days ago:

Quote
AUDITION NOTICE
Theater Artists Olympia & The Kitchen Project present
THE NEW LIVE SOAP

It began 10 years ago. It was inspired by the original work “The Cunning” which allowed the actors to step in and out of the play at any time. It was all about the act of choosing one’s own actions. Which was what the play was all about. After a successful run we, the cast, realized we had developed lots of improv and character building skills, which inspired us to steal the idea of a weekly soap from an LA Theatre group and start our own soap. Thus “Invasion of the Heart” was born, set in the almost, practically, wholly imaginary, town of Polymia. And now, of course, the adventure continues…

Theater Artists Olympia, together with the Kitchen Project, are excited to announce auditions for the New Live Soap!  The Show will be written and performed by an ensemble cast on every other Tuesday in the Midnight Sun.  It will require two Sunday writing session/rehearsals.  Theatre experience is not necessarily a requirement.  The Show will be directed by Reuben Yancey who has created/directed over 75 soap shows (amongst many other things). This is a demanding and challenging process that will improve your performance and writing skills and be incredible fun!

And it included contact information.  Anyone interested?

I have both versions of this opera (one on DVD and the other on Blu-ray).  Right now, I'm listening to the one-act opera, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat," by Michael Nyman.  It was on the shelf right next to "Nixon in China," which I'll listen to next.

After that, I'll listen to Alan Menken & Tim Rice's King David (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001M3W) that I just got today from eBay...from Australia!  It was another stolen CD that I'm replacing.  And even though this cost probably twice what I had originally paid for it new, I wanted it, so I got it.  I've seen it for a lot more, but it's been a LONG time since I've seen it for much less.  And it's in absolutely perfect pristine condition!  I love that. ;D

I certainly hope so, DR Jane, because I found in Mom's refrigerator the green (Jello) eggs and ham that I'd taken her last Saturday - untouched.  And most of the time I was there she seemed to think I was my sister...

I shall soon be on my way to the Friday evening performance of ANTIGONE.

Not many students are expected to attend, because tonight is also a free concert by somebody or someone named MTKO to start the Little 500 bicycle race event that will happen on Saturday afternoon.

Yes, but they see that she eats the food they provide.  Her little refrigerator is optional and just for "extras."

OK, they are off the hook for that ;)

Might there be someone special who works there that will remind your mother of treats?  On the other hand, maybe you don't want to leave food that will spoil.  Just take a meal when you are going to eat with her, or at least sit with her while she eats.

Jane, do you know the person who did the inspection? Some inspectors are poorly qualified--so much so that I've wondered if they're on the take. The inspection for my last home in Alexandria was so far off as to be laughable. For instance,

The report said there was a puddle under the kitchen sink. It was actually dry as a bone, and, as my handyman, Marvelous Matt, pointed out, if there HAD been water at any time there'd be water marks.

The report said that the furnace filter needed to be replaced. The house did not have a furnace. It had a boiler and radiators, neither of which take filters. I think the inspector was referring to the AC unit, but don't you think he'd know the difference between a furnace and an AC?

The whole report was full of stuff like that. Not only was it unfair to me, the seller, but it was unfair to the buyers, as well, as it undermined their confidence in a meticulously restored historic home.

I never learned why the inspector's problem was--totally unqualified, on the take, whatever. The sale went through and I tried to put the ugliness of the this and the obnoxious buyers behind me. But I learned not to necessarily believe an inspection report.

DR Jeanne, Keith picked up on a few things the inspector missed, however, the inspector caught a number of things that are just wrong.  A small example.....there is a gas cooktop and the shut off valve for the gas has been dry-walled over.  It is more an accumulation of problems which indicate the property has not been cared for.  We have since learned the owner never lived there and used it as a rental.

It is a bit mind boggling that the owner did not have everything checked and fixed before putting it on the market.  We were aware of a few obvious problems and after the inspection we are wondering what can't be seen.

I have downloaded a few things, but I would prefer physical CDs, whenever possible (or affordable).  I know that there are some things that I'll never be able to replace...mainly the things that I don't remember. ::)

But there are a few things that are now so expensive that I wouldn't want to pay that much just to have the CD.  It's been about five years and I just replaced "King David."  It was about $45.  I figure that it probably won't be any cheaper anytime soon, so I decided to go ahead and get it...just because.

I saw this today and wondering what are you favorite James Bond theme songs. I think the last good song with music, lyrics and performance was All Time High from Octopussy until Skyfall. All the others despite some great singers are not among my favorites to listen to.

Surprisingly some of the best songs in my opinion were overlooked for Oscar nominations. (Goldfinger, Thunderball and Diamonds Are Forever)

From Russia With Love is sung over the end titles.

We Have All The Time In the World sung by Louis Armstrong is sung during On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I was watching a Carol Burnett Show. If you remember she and the cast would parody commercials that were popular at the time. They parodied the Colt 45 ad. The ones that starred Billy Van and had that enigmatic song while something extraordinary happened but he would not look up until the waiter brought over his order of Colt 45. Does anyone know the name of the song and if it is available? I can't get it out of my humming zone.

Just back from Orchestra Hall. On the docket tonight was Ann Hampton Callaway's Streisand program. She brought her pianist and drummer, but she also performed with the entire Minnesota Orchestra. It was a great show.

Great because of her performance, of course, but also because the show also was a tribute to Jule Styne, the Bergmans, and Marvin Hamlisch. And she did her standard party trick, writing a song on the spot with phrases and suggestions from the audience. It turned out to be a love song about Ole and Sven (two male names that had been shouted out). She didn't understand that at first, but she soon got it.     :)

Jane have you withdrawn your offer?

We are thinking about it.  We need answers and that can take awhile.  We have until Tuesday.

An example:

One blog post says that the song used was "Solfeggio". I can hear that, but the Colt 45 version is different. The Ernie Kovacs Nairobi Trio used the Robert Maxwell version. If only the Colt 45 version were available. That arrangement makes the song sound wistful (?) Not sure if it the melody is played on a piccolo or ocarina.

Anyone ever see the scrolling scores on you tube? This one is of Steve Reich's "Clapping Music" and it's fun to follow:

Finished with The Missing about which more in the notes.  Now I'll relax for an hour, then write some notes, then get to bed.
