My Birding Buddy does genealogy. She researched a couple of generations of my family. The census taker would often go door to door and wrote down what he thought he heard. So there are lots of misspellings and mishearing on names.

Good morning, all!  I will be here today, trying to finish up this first edit of Gentlemen,Be Seated! I have two numbers to go, and I would like to get one finished today, the other tomorrow, and send them to Dan by Sunday.

My calendar is empty and that's a bit alarming.  I do hope some work comes in soon.

Here's the blurb for the new CD:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack release – a classic score from the Golden Age and the score’s first standalone release:

WHITE WITCH DOCTOR

Music Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann

White Witch Doctor, based on the 1950 novel by Louise A. Stinetorf, was a Technicolor adventure film filled with action and romance, and two stars, Robert Mitchum and Susan Hayward who were not only wonderful actors, but who exuded sex appeal.   Director Henry Hathaway shot the film both on location and the Fox backlot – the beautiful photography was by ace cameraman Leon Shamroy.  But what really sets the film apart from other African-set films of that era (and there were a lot of them) is the incredible score by Bernard Herrmann.

By 1953, Herrmann was already a Fox regular and both Alfred Newman and Zanuck were huge fans of his.  For White Witch Doctor he delivered one of his greatest scores, yet not one that is known much these days.  The film begins with the kind of main title that just propels you into the movie – pervasive percussion and drums over exciting strings and brass, clanging bells, and winds run amok – no one did this kind of main title better than Herrmann.  Much of the score is breathtakingly beautiful with Herrmann’s amazing orchestral textures and colors.  It also includes several appearances by the weird and ominous-sounding instrument the serpent to underscore suspenseful moments – an instrument he would also make great use of several years later for Journey to the Center of the Earth.  Every cue is infused with Herrmann’s unique and brilliant harmonic character – in fact, much of the score plays like a preview of scores he would do for Hitchcock and the fantasy films that came later.  There was no one who did it like Herrmann and this is one of his all-time great scores.

White Witch Doctor’s first release on CD was part of the big Bernard Herrmann at Fox box on Varese Sarabande.  That set was a quick sellout and many fans missed out on its myriad pleasures, White Witch Doctor being among the best of them.  It’s presented in that wonderful Fox push-pull stereo and the score sounds absolutely splendid.

White Witch Doctor is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.   CDs will ship by the second week of July.  However, never fear – on average we usually ship two to four weeks ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

We watched STILL ALICE last night.

It was a well made film and Julianne Moore certainly deserved the Oscar and all the other awards that she won.

Yesterday I received a package of MOVIES from DR MBARNUM.  It was a nice collection of stuff.  Since there was nothing I wanted to watch on television, I started watching them.

LIZZIE with Eleanor Parker....pretty good movie in the 3 Faces of Eve family.....I like Eleanor Parker....for the most part.

AIR HOSTESSES - a lot of girls decide to go to school to be....you know....the best part is that it featured Barbara Billingsley, Marjorie Lord, and Gloria Henry as three of the girls.  Marjorie was best.

AIR PATROL - a 1962 movie that had LOTS of L.A. location shooting. There was an extended sequence at the Producer's Studio where I think MR BK made TFNM....the buildings looked the same....and the bad guy ended up driving down the Valley River to the Sepulveda dam......

NAKED PARADISE with Beverly Garland stinking up the screen, but also Jonathan Haze and Dick Miller and Richard Denning....and some nice Hawaii locations.

And THE BIG OPERATOR, an Albert Zugsmith spectacular featuring Mamie Van Doren as a suburban housewife, EL VAMPIRO, and HIGH SCHOOL HELLCATS....which according to the ages of the girls should actually have been GRAD SCHOOL HELLCATS....but....

I pretty much enjoy them all.....but two particular favorites:

Chef of the Future - when Ralph and Ed go on television to sell a kitchen gadget.

The $99,000 Question - Ralph goes on a quiz show and Ed helps him cram on the subject of music....

Thanks DR FJL I will check out that link.

As far as I know the Kasha-Hirschorn songs are there.  I don't have a libretto or score here since I'm not in the show.  I know they are doing the awful "A Woman Ought to Know Her Place" which is one of theirs, I think.

The script has been revised since I did it last time back in the 90's and it's much better.

I have the enhanced soundtrack from the movie.....so I am using the music only tracks from it, and I took the vocals out of a couple of the other songs, so I think I have about 23 minutes of stuff which should be enough.

I tried some American folk music, but nothing really seemed to fit.  And I don't want the audience to be confused....so I thought I would stick with music from the film.

I've seen THE HONEYMOONERS classic 39 many times each.

I agree that "Chef of the Future" is way up on top of the favorites list.
"The $99,000 Question" is up there too. I especially like that the Italian neighbor is named Mrs. Manicotti. This reminds me of the character on The Abbott & Costello Show, Mr. Bacciagalupe, played by Lou Costello's brother-in-law, Joe Kirk.

I would add that I'm a sucker for Christmas episodes and I have always liked The Honeymooners "classic 39" Christmas episode, the one with the box with the secret compartment "owned by the Emperor of China". I enjoyed the later Christmas episodes from the 1960s and 1970s even though these are not the same as the 1950s canon. What is interesting in the so named "Color Honeymooners" that these would develop into musicales with Broadway/Vaudeville-style numbers.

More HONEYMOONERS:

1. Ralph and Alice hire a maid.
2. Alice, your mother's a "blabbermouth".
3. When Norton teaches Ralph how to play golf.
4. Ralph is about to inherit a "Fortune".
5. Ralph is in a play and cannot say the phrase "polo ponies".

Leonard Stern was one of the many great writers on the show. Later worked on "Sgt. Bilko" with Phil Silvers, and I believe he went on to "Get Smart" among many other shows. I know that Mel Brooks has said that Mr. Stern created the opening credits sequence for "Get Smart". The word game "Mad Libs" was something Mr. Stern helped develop.

Eventually we found them packed in a suitcase in the car.  Why on earth I did that is beyond me.  What a relief.  It would have not been fun trying to get more meds, and probably at full price vs the insurance price.

Thanks for The Honeymooners info DR DAN M.

Audrey Meadows has said that because Gleason hated to rehearse and often refused to, she became a traffic director - she would put her hand on her hip and let her elbow point in the direction he was supposed to go next - and other subtle blocking hints to keep him where he should be during the filming.

Here is another classic......

I think Jackie Gleason had a very interesting career.

One of his first major roles was in an Edward G. Robinson comedy, Larceny, Inc. The plot has been recycled many times: a mobster gang buys a store adjoining a bank. The store's basement aligns poifectly with the bank vault. Trouble and hilarity ensue.

Admittedly his was a very different Chester A. Riley than the version played by William Bendix. While I like both, as far as Life of Riley, I have to prefer Bendix because he was more believable as a dopey guy.

He did try his talents at dramatic roles. Gleason was excellent in Requiem for a Heavyweight and in The Hustler.

He did like to go toward pathos, such as his "Poor Soul" character and the title role in Gigot. As many times as I've seen these characters, I still have mixed feelings about them.

And Jackie Gleason's "music for lover's only". How much of it was him and how much of it really was just in-name-only I don't know. I like it, but maybe that makes me unsophisticated. But then again I have always liked how arrangers can take a song and totally change it, for better and for worse.

I know that people may not tell tales out of school, but as much acclaim as Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams have had, deservedly so, how much of their popularity is due to their orchestrators and arrangers? Just as a quick example. Goldsmith's theme for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., in my layperson/appreciator of music opinion, didn't get the pizazz that I like in spy themes until there was a later season arrangement by Gerald Fried and another by Morton Stevens. I'm just saying.

I struggled with this week's poetry assignment. This is what came about when brain, hand and pencil met paper:

Miracle of Wireless

Turning tuning intently
radio finding frequencies
invisible euphonic myriad;
Acoustic auspices arrays
segue to fantasia;
A siege of sounds
seizing my faculties now;
No longer following Euterpe;
Now act in amnesia, seemingly
by thoughts from she
who compels me.
A bootleg Blue Angel, or
phantasm from Pinocchio, no;
Calliope directing me
to the consonance in these
consonants and vowels
manifesting the melody
from within.

I have no idea where that came from.

There were 8 slices, 2 for each of us.

Umm...Jane?  If there were 8 slices, shouldn't that be 4 for each of you?

Right now, I need to leave work to go to Olympia Little Theatre's production of "Mama Won't Fly" because the performance is a benefit for Olympia's chapter of PFLAG.  My sister, niece and sister's boyfriend are all on the PFLAG board, so I have to support them!  My niece is going to pick me up soon, so I have to be ready when she gets here.  My sister will drive me home, so I won't be able to report until then.

Be back later!

Love LARCENY, INC.

During the 70s, NY independent TV station WPIX would play "The Honeymooners" late on weeknights and on weekends. It would act as a short subject before I turned the channel to WABC's late movie on Saturday, which would usually be a cultish B movie (the former 4:30 Movie type movie):

Yes, and interesting. He's 70 and was in the grocery industry just before he retired. He hasn't given out too many details, but he's got at least two nice cars to pick me up with. One is a restored classic Benz sport model, and the other is a new Expedition, which is a bit of a climb for me. I have to sit first then swing in. He's restoring a classic pick-up. That's his hobby. All I know is how to fill the tank and turn the key. I'm a blank on cars.

I don't always either LOL. But I do love the sound of words and of the combinations. I do hear the music in spoken words. Some people don't realize that cadence and pitch underscores the content and can emphasize what is being conveyed. What interested me was that many great announcers and narrators were from NYC and trained themselves to speak. So, I tried to do that on my own.

While working at the University of Arizona, I was very active in the Toastmasters club I was a charter member of. I miss giving speeches.

I love words! That sounds great. It does help to hear what the word should sound like. Recently I heard some local radio host trying to parody Poe's "The Raven" but he kept mispronouncing "quoth". That ruined it for me and I was a split=-second from excoriating him on air, but I didn't call in. Instead of saying the word with the long O, he said it with the short O, and any of the Englsih actors I've heard recite that poem, it was always with the long O. Maybe it's a minor point, but it was grating to me. Just like hitting the wrong note.

I can hear my inner voice, which usually sounds like Orson Welles or John Facenda, or Alexander Scourby, depending on my mood. It would be disturbing if Rod Serling should show up.

Finished with my viewing - more Honeymooners, and then I decided to re-watch the first two episodes of Mad Men.  What a difference eight years makes.  Sally is seven years old here.  Pete hasn't settled into his character - at ALL.  I love Sal (Bryan Batt).  And Peggy, of all the characters, for me, has had the most interesting trek through the eight years.  She's great, but you can see they weren't sure which way they were going to take her in the first two episodes.  As I recall, after that it's all smooth sailing, Peggy-wise.  Roger has been the most consistent character in terms of not really changing much at all.

My next little musical project is for Sunday morning: the choir director has programmed a pretty elaborate gospel-style choral number, and has asked me to belt out one of the solo verses in an authentic, improvised style. Well, as close as a white boy like me can get, which isn't all that close. Still, it's a challenge, and not something that is in my comfort zone. So it's good to step out of it once in a while, I suppose.

It would be disturbing if Rod Serling should show up.

Was it DR Dan M who posted the Elaine Paige clips yesterday?  That Piaf one, especially, was pretty amazing.

Well, I am running out of steam. I'd better hit the hay.

Although what the hay did to deserve being hit, I don't know.

That is really great that this service is available to you, DR Dan M.

Yes, I am relieved. I now have the same volunteer driver for my pre-surgery evaluation next Wednesday. He will also drive me the morning of my surgery in June, and has agreed to be on call when I am about to be sent home. I may be in the hospital for a day or so.

Good :)

Thank you. It really is a godsend not to worry about having a different driver each time. The volunteer that was randomly assigned to me has I guess made me one of his regulars and is willing to take me shopping "off the record". That is above and beyond what is required of a volunteer driver. I am very grateful.

Well I'll be darned.

All these years, I had thought that the word chimera was pronounced SHIH-mur-ah.

But it's not.

It's ky-MEER-uh.

What's up with that?, as DR Cillaliz would say.      :)

I thought it was chi mare a...   what's up with that ;)

Would you be able to pay him to drive you the long distance trip you are planning?

This has been  a long  week.  Lots of people with strange problems4  at work, my neighbors funeral and then dreaming I had 8 dogs and 4 cats and was rescuing another dog.... I did an animal head count when I woke up and was relieved to only have 3 cats.  Maybe it's the rain

Well, the show was kind of cute.  The lead actress playing the adult daughter and the woman playing her brother's fiancee were both pretty good (I'd seen both of them in other things), but the rest of the cast was just okay...no one was horrible, but it really was just a community theater production.

It was a cute show, otherwise...and there were over 60 people there!  PFLAG of Olympia made a nice little chunk 'o change!

Well, I think I should try to get some sleep.  My neck has been hurting a bit (hopefully, I just slept wrong) and I hope that it won't prevent me from sleeping, so the earlier I get to bed, the longer I have to get to sleep. ;)

Good night, all.
