Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a one-two punch, and now it is time for you to post until the one-two cows come home.

Today is another Tams-Witmark day.  I will hopefully arrive there by 9:30, and work until 1:00 or so.  On Wednesday, I worked until 2:30, and the bus ride home was like being on an overpacked schoolbus with too many screaming kids riding for free while the paying passengers stood, and it was hell.  I ry to plan my life t avoid such situations.

So, I'll work on the Golden Apple Exit Music today, and finish it up on Tuesday since Monday's a holiday. Tomorrow, I'm meeting the Miami University Theatre Dept. scene designer for breakfast at his hotel on 46th Street, and on Sunday, I'll make my trek to Toyland to print out the last number from Gentlemen, Be Seated!

I am still amazed that DR vixmom did not actually crack or fracture anything in the fall.  Or even in the spring.  (No groaning.)  But it obviously did a number with sprains and whatnot, and those things heal when they heal and there ain't no rushing it.

Looking forward to TCB's report today.  I would imagine that after a full recovery from the dilation and following a night's sleep, things should be looking pretty nice today.  Will the other eye be done as well, later on?
Title: Re: THE ONE-TWO PUNCH
Post by: ChasSmith on May 22, 2015, 05:27:59 AM
I didn't say anything earlier, but I spent the past four days ketchuping on the entire seventh season of MAD MEN.  For some reason I'd only watched the first episode of it last year, even though I was always devoted to the series.  But distractions happened, and I just put it off.  I'd had the Blu-rays sitting around all this time, so I watched the first seven episodes on disc, then the rest of them via On Demand.

That transition, btw, easily proved the superiority of physical media and full HD.  Even though HD TV is a night-and-day improvement over standard definition, the broadcasts or streams, etc., leave much to be desired in comparison with full 1080p on one's own system.  Not to mention the horrible network and advertising crap one must tolerate and fast-forward through.

ANYHOO.....while definitely not the same vibe as earlier seasons of MAD MEN, I still loved the show, and the parts that were really good were stunning and excruciatingly excruciating when they needed to be.  And because I've long since accepted that none of these contemporary TV series' final episodes are going to be satisfying for any two people, I just let that last one roll with no particular expectations, and I found it to be pretty okay.  Or even pretty damned good.  Hey, it's fine, and the last bits are...fun.  I even replayed the last few moments a couple more times before calling it a day.  And for those yet to partake, none of this drops any spoilers.
Title: Re: THE ONE-TWO PUNCH
Post by: ChasSmith on May 22, 2015, 05:49:34 AM
And so, the TOD:

All week up through yesterday afternoon, MAD MEN.

Then, for a complete change of pace, last night I watched U TURN, a little-known Oliver Stone film that can be described as a comedic but intense "Desert Noir".  I love that kind of thing, so it was bound to float my boat just fine.  It's kind of NATURAL BORN KILLERS-ish in style.  I found it highly entertaining, the casting is amazing, and so is the score by Ennio Morricone.  Naturally, there's violence, so if that isn't for you, then it isn't for you.  For the likes of me, it was a perfect "blind buy" from Twilight Time.

Today and over the long weekend, more ketchup.  Off the top of my head, the To Watch stack includes two musicals, THE LAST FIVE YEARS and INTO THE WOODS (yes, children, there are still a couple of us who haven't seen it yet).  Other films are MISSISSIPPI BURNING (which somehow I never saw, don't ask me why because I haven't the slightest idea), A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, PIT STOP, and THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MISS OSBOURNE which shall be my first foray into a Walerian Borowczyk film.  (Whew.)  (I had to copy and paste the spelling.)  So let's be serious -- I'm not going to get through all of that in a couple of days.  And there are a couple more things that I'm forgetting at the moment.  So it's a good stack.  A mighty good stack.

Music-wise, I'll be going through some lovely vinyl records, and while so doing, mixing a new batch of cleaning fluid and replacing a brush on the record cleaning machine, bringing everything up to snuff.

Last night, we watched TAKEN 3.

Terrible movie.  I liked the first two TAKEN films, but this one totally defies logic.

I'm not talking about the action sequences, which are good, but the motivation factor.

Virtually nothing that Liam Neeson does in the movie makes sense.

I was going through a box of stuff I hadn't seen since before I became a cancer patient. Things I thought were gone, and things I forgot all about. Nothing necessarily significant, but nice to be reacquainted with.

I found a vintage Christmas decoration I had bought at a thrift store. It's a cardboard Santa face, circa 1960ish, that sits upon a flat paper bell which when fanned out becomes a fully dimensional red bell. When I bought it, I was amazed that it was entirely intact, particularly since the paper bell is honeycombed, and you know what the little kids could have done with that.

Also in the box was a book that I thought was lost. I misremembered that I had lent it to someone and it was not returned, but it must have been while I was in hospital. Since I liked the book, I replaced it as soon as I could after being released from the nursing home. But now I have two copies of the book. It's a fun book, published by the Whole Earth Catalogue and it is titled "The Fringes of Reason" all about pseudoscience and cryptozoology from a late 1970s perspective. Must have been due to all the hubbub that the Leonard Nimoy/Alan Landsburg "In Search Of" series was getting, a contemporaneous book makes sense.

One of the other unexpected rediscoveries was my AM only transistor radio, which was made by LJN a 1970s manufacturer of toys. The radio takes a 9V battery and as a radio it's no Sony, but what it is, and I have the original box, an original Krofft Superstars Saturday Show commemorative radio with Kaptain Kool and the Kongs on the cover. I was a huge Krofft fan. It would be nice to see some of those shows again.

Another part of revisiting items, it jogs my memory and I remembered that back in the late 1990s/early 2000 I started to follow a group out of Washington State called The Bran Flakes. They used to have an internet radio show, which I think used a distorted (in a funny way) version of Pat Boone's "Friendly Persuasion". For those who don't know, they take snippets of vintage, obscure recordings and make sound collages or songs. Extremely odd humor. I remember that I used to have their early CDs. What they did to an LP of Smith-Corona teaches you how to touch-type!

Bruce, if you can, have someone bring over chamomile tea. It's a natural way to restore your digestive system whether ravaged by flu, food poisoning or food allergy, or stomach bug. It kills off whatever is in there.

In the article, they quote Cecilia Bartoli:

Quote
She wrote in a program note that she looks forward to staging Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” which she described as a 20th-century masterpiece.

“The wish that Bernstein obviously expressed, that in the midst of the Broadway ensemble, the lovers’ roles, Maria and Tony, could be sung by operatic voices, opens up a wonderful new repertoire to me,’’ she wrote, “including hits like ‘Tonight,’ ‘One Hand, One Heart,’ ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘Somewhere.’ ”

That's fine, but within the context of the show, Maria doesn't sing "Somewhere."

I am told that my hard drive is dying. Since it is, OF COURSE, the start of a holiday weekend, I won't be able to take my Macbook into the shop until Tuesday. I'm hoping it lasts until then and will try not to tax it. I was promised a one-day turnaround, which is MUCH better than what I would have gotten at the other computer repair shop. For the last repair I tried a come-to-your-house repair guy, but I wasn't happy with him. So far I like this new place.

Can we add my Macbook to the vibe list for those ailing?   :)

I am still amazed that DR vixmom did not actually crack or fracture anything in the fall.  Or even in the spring.  (No groaning.)  But it obviously did a number with sprains and whatnot, and those things heal when they heal and there ain't no rushing it.

Torn ligaments (AKA "whatnot") can take a very long time to heal.

Vibes that Vixmom's whatever heal quickly!

Gathering items to add to my gluten-free carrot cake. At least those were delivered. I already have the mix and the organic carrots which I will clean and shred myself. May be good, may not, but it's an experiment. In any event, I will learn.

TCB, I'm glad to hear you're recovering nicely. I will need the same surgery at some point in the not-too-distant future and it helps me to learn what needs to be done.

Aside from eliminating the clouding caused by the cataracts has your vision been improved, ie, did the doctor implant a lens to give you better vision?

I don't usually remember my dreams but last night  i worked very hard.  My 10th grade social studies teacher called me to the high school because he needed my assistance  they had failed to develop a 10th grade history curriculum.  They were thinking about teaching about medieval England but I gave an impassioned speech about why they should instead teach about American history for the years 1900 through the present time.  I sat down with him and drew up a detailed curriculum for each month of the year including assignemtn s where the students would have to draw up a family tree going back at least 4 generations and detailing the changes those ancestors had seen in their lifetime.

I was excited about the finished product .

Very good news.

Between Astaire and Kelly, I always sided with Astaire. Whenever I had the chance, I would walk down a large staircase Astaire-style. One of the best places to do that was at the General Post Office in NYC. That was a long staircase!

How he knows that, I have no idea.

Did you explain you had a cat  and that means it could be anywhere

Nick was pretty tired this morning.

My fingers are working  better  but I still have no strength in my right arm and the bone aches terribly from shoulder to elbow.  Any I turn my wrist  it hurts like the dickens

the weird thing is I never came out in a single bruise  which is odd as when I  simply bump up against something I normally bruise very easily

In the end I went to the show.  I'd been in bed for almost forty hours straight and I'd about had it.  I got through the show fine - after, I said I thought having food poisoning may have been preferable to seeing the show.  After, I went out with a few folks and I was weak that I decided to chance food, so I had a cup of soup and a sandwich.  So far it's okay, but do pray for Rosemary's Baby.  Notes to write.

On the way to dinner we were rear ended.  Sigh.

Are you both okay?

I think so thank you.  We were stopped at a light and the other car wasn't going too fast.  We didn't see it coming of course.

Yikes!!  Hopefully, you won't start to hurt in the days to come.
