Title: THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
Post by: bk on July 03, 2015, 12:27:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a comedy and had errors, and now it is time for you to post until the comedy cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

What will be in my sister's Blu-ray player later today:  the new Blu-ray disc of 1776!  I'll finally get to see it!  I still haven't gotten a new TV since mine died a quick and painful (to me) death.

Yesterday at work, I listened to about half of the London cast recording of 1776.  I'll finish the rest of it today.  I bought the record in 1995 during the one and only trip that I've taken to NYC.  I got it at Colony Records and it cost me $60!  It's very British.

The family is getting together today at my sister's to celebrate the 4th (even though the 4th is tomorrow).  I don't know why we're not getting together tomorrow, but we're not.

Yesterday afternoon, a friend texted me, asking if I wanted to see The Shining (the original version) with him and some of his friends later tonight at the Capitol Theater, put on by the Olympia Film Festival.  I texted back, "sure."  So, after 1776 at my sister's with the family (and some pizza eating), I'll go see The Shining (the original version).

Have a good day, all!

TOD

I got through NIGHT OF THE GENERALS last night!

This is something I ass-umed for years that I'd seen back in the day, so it was something of a revelation to find that I apparently knew not one whit of it.  And I very much enjoyed it once I got to the parts where Peter O'Toole begins eating the scenery.  I'll let it settle for a bit, then watch it straight through again sometime when wide awake and up for it.

Today, not sure.  A showing of 1776 for a couple of friends is on the agenda, probably tomorrow.  Don't know yet what else is in store.

DR George:  London cast recording?!  I can't find that anywhere!

$60.  Oy.  But that sounds right for Colony.  Great store to browse in, though, may it rest in peace.  I think I only ever bought a couple of vocal scores there.

I paid something like that for the "London" COMPANY at Footlight around that same time.

Yesterday our new adjustable mattress was delivered.  They could only put 3/4 of the bed together as the warehouse sent the wrong size for the last section.

If they don't deliver it today we have a big problem since we expect company to use the guest bed on the 4th.

Speaking of three hour movies, I bought the roadshow edition of "The Happiest Millionaire" on DVD, which clocks in at 172 minutes. WTH? Why would you make a family musical that long? Why would anyone make a Tommy Steele movie that long? His grin, with its 14 rows of teeth, is nowhere to be seen on the box.

I don't know if I'll have the time to watch it this weekend. I also found In Which We Serve and Mamma Mia for $1.99 each, so I have those, too.

Am listening now to Bryn Terfel's Alan Jay Lerner album. He's really good on the Kurt Weill and Charles Strouse songs, more of a mixed bag on the Loewe. But his version of "I Call the Wind Maria" really makes me want to hear the new "Paint Your Wagon." Any release date that you know of, Elmore?

I've spent the morning transferring to my desktop the files from my Toyland computer that I downloaded to Dropbox.  They are now burned onto CD-roms.

I also sent some Dropbox files to friends, and I'm copying orchestra parts for the last Appendix number in JUBILEE, a dreadful ditty called "Sing Jubilee," which may be the worst song Cole Porter ever wrote.

I've never heard Sing Jubilee but I think Mack the Black from The Pirate and I Happen to Like New York also rank as some of the worst stuff Porter ever wrote. And I like Porter. I just happen to LOATHE The Pirate (an unwatchable mess with a score to match IMHO) although I know it has many vocal defenders and I hate that New York song.

Stage Manager could not find the plastic funnel I bought him to pour the colored water into the liquor bottles....no where to be found.....  I asked him where he left it...he said beside the sink....which of course LINDA says is HER sink, not the dishwashing sink....

So during the cast meeting before the show, since she was there to take production photos, I asked everyone if they had seen the funnel....that it was missing, and I hated to have to buy another one.

Linda spoke up and said, "I hid it, it was left on the counter where it shouldn't have been."

And I said: "Well maybe we put it there as a gift for you."

She didn't say anything....but NOW everyone knows.....

Chacun a son gout!  I'm quite fond of "We Sing of Love," which the last revisal of Kiss Me, Kate proved that no one knew what to do with it.  It's especially wonderful in the Tarantella dance arrangement, and I love "I Happen To Like New York."  There are a lot of numbers between "Dubarry Was A Lady" and "Kiss me, Kate" that could compete for the worst Cole Porter song.

Maybe we should list the worst songs by major theatre composers: Sondheim, Irving Berlin, Rodgers, Kern, etc.  they all have them.  When we did the Victor Herbert Collected songs, I cut one titled something like "Indian Lullaby" because it was such a poor attempt to write something Native American.  It was a complete embarrassment.

Mine for Sondheim would be Boom, Crunch, dropped from Into the Woods in favor of Last Midnight, which was not much of an improvement.

Have to think about the others.

I prefer Harold Lang on the recording of "Decline and Fall of the Entire World as Seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter."

Gloria Loring seems to be such a delightful person.  A couple of years back, I had asked her and Alan Thicke if I could do an online parody of one of their theme songs and both of them couldn't have been nicer about it.

We had an office party last night.  The boss called it "Christmas in July" as he'd been unable to throw a real Christmas party last year.

He had a minimum amount that he had to get to for the restaurant tab and was winding p well under the minimum, so he started ordering food and giving it to people we didn't know.  That turned out to be very festive.

Yea...no...that's not a good version.  My favorite is Anne Wood on the London cast recording of the Cole Porter revue, A Swell Party (http://castalbums.org/recordings/A-Swell-Party-1991-Original-London-Cast/1761), featuring the late Martin Smith.

Here it is on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_eMXG4C7CA). :D

I can honestly say that I have never had the "pleasure" to have worked with someone who's as much of a pill as this Linda. :-\

I've heard stories from friends, but never from first-hand experience.

Oh, George, you haven't lived!

There is a board for the Playhouse, DR JRand64?  Can't they slap her down or remind her of her position in the scheme of things?

Stumble-through wasn't a blood bath, so that was good.  A couple of silly meltdown moments from our pianist, just misreading stuff, but it was basically smooth.  I shortened one put-together (this show has a lot of ballads and I've got to keep it moving right along), and may even shorten another tomorrow.  One performer was simply not on the A game I need but they knew it and will fix it by Sunday.

... the last Appendix number in JUBILEE, a dreadful ditty called "Sing Jubilee," which may be the worst song Cole Porter ever wrote.
