TOD:

I went to summer camp regularly from age 5 until I was 13.  (I started to work during the summers as soon as it was OK to do so, when i was 14.)   I tended to really like the summer camp experience when I went for three weeks at a time, not as reliably when I went for the whole eight weeks, which I did a couple of times.

We watched DANNY COLLINS yesterday.

It's a very likable movie; Al Pacino's best performance in years.

The 3rd act slowed down a bit, but the overall writing was excellent.

I never saw Miracle Mile.  This will be rectified posthaste.

So, let's see.  1988.

It was to be my last full year in L.A.  I was living in West Hollywood, I was in that part of town (Wilshire/Fairfax) as much or more than I'd ever been, and I don't even remember hearing about the movie Miracle Mile then.  Amazing.

In 1988 the Orbach's building contained an indoor flea market of sorts on the ground floor, which I think was all new stuff (typical flea market goods) except for a used record dealer from whom I bought a few things.

I also remember my last time in the May Company around then, buying a pair of sneakers.

The Pan Pacific Auditorium closed as I was moving to L.A. so I was never in there.  I only went to a couple of second run movies in that little theater there, which could have been as late as 1988.

BTW, based on a memory of who I was with on a particular occasion, I can state that I ate in Johnnie's Coffee Shop as late as 1975.  Maybe even 1976.

So, my company's move to Danbury took place over Memorial Day weekend in 1989, and since most of us had vacated wherever we'd been living, they put us up in hotels for the last week of May.  I chose the Holiday Inn in Hollywood, and it was great staying there.  I had a nice high view looking out over L.A.  One afternoon that week there was some shocking news on all the radio and TV stations, and I stood at the window in my room, watching the smoke rising from the remains of the Pan Pacific Auditorium.

I loved camp!! I couldn't wait to get there and hated to leave. The only Summer camp I went to was for two weeks as a family, which was very fun. It was called Echo Lake Camp. But mostly I went to Jewish camp by myself. And it wasn't in the Summer. There were one-week Winter camps that I went to a few times, and several weekend-long "convention" camps. Summer camp was for two weeks, was more expensive, and only my oldest sister got to go. I had to save up my allowance (which was liked $1.00 a week) to pay for camp myself. My Dad has since expressed regret at being so stingy throughout our childhoods. I mean he always wanted me to be more Jewish, so why he  discouraged me from going to these camps, I'll never know. Other kids said their parents "made" them go to camp. I wished I had those parent.

TOD:

A couple of week-long church-sponsored camps in the early 1960s.  We lived in Fort Lauderdale and the camp was just outside of Ocala near Silver Springs.  I remember experiencing my first ever bout of homesickness the first time, which fortunately only lasted half the week.  The second time, I was totally up for it.  I think these were 1961 and 1963.  I guess I liked it well enough then, but I've never really been any kind of a camper, either in the "summer camp" sense or any other sense.

My internet has been spotty today.

Yesterday my sister decided that Dad had too much furniture in his room, so she wanted to get rid of the entertainment center and put his bookcase that had been in his closet out there.

I didn't want to throw the entertainment center out because it is a nice piece of furniture, so I put it in my room.  There really wasn't a space for it, so it is kind of in the way.....but after the play has ended, I will empty the old computer desk I have....and put the new furniture there.....but until then....it's like when the Ricardos moved in with the Mertzes.

Hey, everyone! Hope you had great weekends.

TOD: I went to the same summer day camp (Eagle Country Day Camp, in Rockland County) for six years straight, and have extremely fond memories. Swimming, ballplaying, horrible ice cream sandwich cookies, and the cheesiest productions of "Mary Poppins," "My Fair Lady," "Peter Pan," and "Sound of Music" ever imagined. I actually ran into the wonderful woman who directed those shows some 25 years after the fact, and we had a lovely conversation about days gone by.

Back from Columbia.  My favorite library assistant is no longer there.  He has graduated and moved on.  Luckily, I like the other assistants and librarians very much.

Today, I answered a couple of questions for Howard Pollack and looked at a lot of Playbills and other programs, press releases, and the early librettos.

I must finish my commission today.

Hmmm.....tenting is not required for selling/buying a house in California....but I could find no other reason for it than to fumigate for termites and/or bedbugs.  Maybe the house isn't going to be demolished after all.

Monday afternoon greetings!  I had an appointment with my cardiologist to get the results of my echocardiogram, which showed no major valve problems in my heart.  But he thinks there may be valve problems in the veins in my left leg, so Friday I'm going back for a scan of that.

Went from there directly to a meeting that turned into lunch with the incoming AAUW president and our pinch-hitting treasurers and from there to Kroger.

The first time I went to camp I went for a week with my older siblings.  I think I was around 6.  I loved it & was not homesick at all.  I often went to overnight camps, the longest was for the entire summer and a friend went with me.  My sister was in the oldest camp group and my brother was a junior counselor.  This was the last summer my siblings went to camp and my parents decided I would go to day camp from then on.  I preferred overnight camp but day camp was fun too.  The last year I went I was a junior counselor.

Overnight camps had more sports and horseback riding, except for the one I went to at a school.  I didn't enjoy that one as much and they didn't have any swimming.  One camp included kayaking down a river with a stop to meet Fury.  I even got his autograph which I eventually lost.

My first headstand was at the best overnight, all summer camp.  I wish I remembered the name.  I should ask my brother.

Most of the camps had a day for races and team competitions.  Somehow I always jumped higher & farther, swam faster & dove better during these competitions and won a few ribbons.  I needed to do a headstand and had never done one.  My sister told me what to do, I went out there & had the best headstand :)

John Yap is one of the biggest idiots ever.  He thinks he knows everything there is to know about making recordings when, in fact he knows very, very little.  Now, let's see how long it takes for our stalker to send Mr. Yap that.  My guess is, if they're on now, within five minutes.  Good job.

What did you correct him on, elmore, and what did he accuse you of?

Further Annette house report.  They seem to have stripped away all the stucco on the front of the house, exposing the wood frame and the insulation - maybe they are just redoing that stuff - wouldn't that be a nice change of pace, but I remain skeptical.

What did you correct him on, elmore, and what did he accuse you of?

He has a complete recording of SHOW BOAT that he claimed was the 1946 revised version.  Well, it sort of is and sort of isn't because it's missing the big dance numbers in Acts One and Two for Helen Tamiris' choreography and it cuts the character of Kim, the daughter, who sang in 1946 "Nobody Else But Me."

What he recorded was the Rodgers & Hammerstein rental package based on the 1946 revival.  That's fine, and i actually think it's a pretty good recording, but it is not what he claims it is.  I posted that if he'd included "Nobody else But Me" where it belonged, and not as an appendix, he'd have a good facsimile of the 1946 version.

Well, then he went ballistic and started raving that he was sick of me knocking his recordings! I didn't knock it, but then I went ballistic and pointed out that it was one more example of his lousy research and, thanks to his poor pre-recording research, his complete GREASE and KISS ME KATE recordings had the cleaned up high school lyrics and not the original Broadway ones.

Then I told him that Rodgers & Hammerstein had spoken to me about editing a complete SHOW BOAT edition last year.  I am sorry that job fell through.

I cannot get to sleep.

I understand your not being able to make friends easily, TCB. I didn't really have any myself when I was a kid. That seemed to come when I got to college.

Watching a movie called Mao's Last Dancer. Based on a true story. Enjoying the dancing. The rest seems a little too black and white.

It's from Bruce Beresford, who made Driving Miss Daisy and some other good movies. But this one is just a little too pat. Still it works as a feel-good film.

You don't need slow motion or fancy film techniques to capture ballet on film. Too bad that was done here.

Most of my friends are theater friends.

Most of mine are, too.  My friend Margo is my best friend, although I am only one of her best friends.  She and her friends Marsha and Laurie have known each other for more than 30 years, and I've only known Margo for probably around 20 years (we met working in the same building at the library).

As for the Topic of the Day:

I've only once gone to a summer camp, and I did NOT have a good experience.  I don't remember exactly when it was (or very much about the experience, itself), but it was when we lived in Ft. Carson, Colorado, so I was between the ages of seven and ten.

It was a weekend camp in a nearby town and we had to get from the kid-drop-off point to where we were staying on horseback.  Neither my sister nor I had ever ridden a horse.  I have no idea if any of the other kids had any horse-riding experience.  I was kind of scared.  I was able to get on the horse, but on the way to the camp site, we went under some trees with low branches and I fell off.  I don't remember the adults who were in control being very sympathetic to my plight.

Anyway, the only other events that I can remember are:

1) When we got to where we were staying, my horse went directly into a little pond to get some water (like all the other horses) and I couldn't get it out of the pond so that I could get off the horse without getting wet.  I eventually just jumped off.  I fell into the water, got wet, and the horse stepped on my wrist! :o I don't remember the adults being too sympathetic about this, either, telling me to "quit your bawlin'." :P

Post by: George on August 10, 2015, 11:27:53 PM
2) Another memory is that we all slept in one big room on a wooden floor in our sleeping bags.  I have no memory of individual rooms, at all.

3) When it was time to leave, my sister and I got to ride the jeep back.  I think a couple of kids had to ride the jeep out there because there might not have been enough horses for all us kids, but I could've just made that part up.  But I do remember riding the jeep back.

And that's pretty much it.  I have no idea what we did the entire weekend other than these snippets of my memory.

Weird, huh?
