Good morning, all! Today would have been John McGlinn's birthday.  I feel a bit melancholy about it since he was once very important to my dubious career; but he had more personal demons than anyone I have ever known and they ate him alive.

It was another night of weird dreams; I think Nate Hackmann who sang "They Call The Wind Maria" at Encores! was in one of them. In the last one, I was in New York with my cousin Judy, whom I've not seen in 50 years. We were looking for CBS, wher she wanted to apply for work.

It just happens that I took out a score the other night that had come from Mr. McGlinn's library, for reading along with a recording I haven't heard in years -- Poulenc's La voix humaine.  It, like others of his I saw at Toyland, contains some highlighting and other markings which are always of interest.  Thank you again, DR Elmore, for your generosity in sharing these.  They are most appreciated.

Bourbon cocktail notes are always welcome.

Take it easy if you're using chocolate bitters.

Sometimes Cynar, an Italian amaro or bitters liqueur made from artichokes, is bourbon's best friend. Sometimes, they're mortal enemies in a glass.

Tobacco bitters can be a good thing.

I don't think I should have to buy a smoking device in order to make a cocktail. But thankfully there are bars out there willing to do that for you.

Interesting...Harvey Fierstein Will Freshen Up Funny Girl Script for London (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/harvey-fierstein-will-freshen-up-funny-girl-script-for-london-362970):
Quote
Isobel Lennart wrote the original script for the 1964 musical that has a score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill. Chocolate Factory artistic director David Babani told the Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3239080/BAZ-BAMIGBOYE-Nicole-Kidman-got-hit-film-DNA.html#ixzz3m2h3NNG8) that Fierstein has been tasked with "revising the show’s book and making it acceptable for an audience today."
Title: Re: CLIFFHANGER

The link within that quote goes to an article at the Daily Mail which says (in part):
Quote
The show, about American comedienne Fanny Brice, made Barbra Streisand a star on Broadway in 1964. But it’s rarely produced, for two reasons.

First, there are few actresses with the acting and vocal powers to portray Brice.

Second, the show’s book has always been problematic.

Streisand had considerable influence over the creative team and, as a result, the second act is more like a Fanny Brice concert than a show with a story.

This problem is about to be solved. Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the script for new hit Kinky Boots, has been contracted to revise Funny Girl for the forthcoming production at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

David Babani, the Chocolate Factory’s artistic chief, confirmed: ‘Harvey Fierstein will be looking at revising the show’s book and making it acceptable for an audience today.’

The second act really isn't that much of a problem. The first act is. Or at least the time spent away from Fanny and with her mother and Eddie. Who Taught Her Everything She Knows, Henry Street and Find Yourself a Man have great Styne melodies but who cares? They're not about Fanny.

Lumberton is the perfect halfway location, like vixmom said.  It's in NC, just before you enter SC.  But I also found on one trip that if you proceed very far into SC before stopping, the motel rates go up...enough that I wished I'd called it a day back in Lumberton.

I have no idea how many people will be attending this evening's performance.  I know we have fifteen for sure, and I am going to be VERY unhappy if that's what it is.  I've had many conversations about how to get people of their complacent ASSES, and I've also suggested many times that Sami's school chums need to come be supportive - her choir, her drama class.  And yet.

Good morning, all.

I survived my trip to nine bars over 8 1/2 hours to taste nine barrel-aged bourbon cocktails. It was tough work.

And how was your workday today?  ;-)

Holy crap! I have been notified by my HMO that my Medicare premiums are going up $73 next year. At this rate in another two years I will be paying what I paid monthly for health insurance before i turned 65. On a relatively fixed income i cannot afford this and it's disturbing.

Have you looked into a Medicare Advantage program? I pay nothing per month over the $104.90. It includes much of what one would normally obtain from a Medicare supplement plan. Some friends have Secure Horizons and are very happy with it. My plan, SCAN, is a tad cheaper, but only available in California and Arizona.

I had stayed with my HMO because i wanted to keep my doctor, but I may have to reconsider options.  I was paying $150/month when I signed up and it's doubled in three years.

The surgery will begin in two weeks. So far it's lots of measuring my eyes in all sorts of ways. Painless. But you know the medical bureaucracy. Lots of "consents," ie, liability forms to sign, lots of instructions, some of which were contradictory. Next week I have to see my regular doctor for a screening exam to approve the surgery. Easy. Just lots of poking and prodding. It's the anticipation of the surgery that disturbs my equilibrium.

Vixmom, did you ever consider staying at "South of the Border"?

(For those who don't know, that's a very deliberately kitschy "tourist trap" attraction that I, for one, find fascinating and entertaining.  But I've never done more than stop and look around.)

20 years ago when the then 2 year old Vixter , my mom and I did a girls road trip we stopped at SOB

The luxury rooms were all booked so we ended up with a truckers room.  It was right off 95  like RIGHT off the highway.  For some odd reason it had 2 doors both leading to the outside world (Motel not hotel)

Every time a tractor trailer sped past (every thirty seconds or so) both doors would rattle like someone was trying to break in

My mom and I each lay quietly but sleepless in terror in our beds not wanting to disturb the other ( the Vixter was blissfully asleep in her Graco portacrib)

Oh, that IS steep. Didn't the doctor you like move to Texas?

I found an insurance agent here who specializes in Medicare. He saved me a lot of time and cost me nothing, as his commission comes from the plan you select. I'd encourage you to look at Medicare Advantage plans. They can be considerably cheaper. The enrollment period begins soon, though, and you can only change plans during that period.

Tomorrow morning I'm getting up off of ye royal arse to do something I haven't done in over a decade:  going to a record fair.

In my record collecting heyday (Hey!) I'd get out to one every couple of months.  I eventually got out of accumulation mode and those activities fell by the wayside, and for the past several years I've only concentrated on getting rid of a lot of excess.  Now I'm enjoying a real vinyl re-appreciation, and while I'm still slimming the collection down to something much more manageable AND meaningful, I will enjoy once again seeing what's out there.

I swear, I do believe Donald Trump and the bigoted fundamentalist Christian idiots following him are the new Nazi party.  I always thought he was a vulgar, crass putz but now he and his thugs are beginning to terrify me.

Welcome to Berlin.

Back from a very good performance for a third of a house - they were not the loudest group, but there were good laughs and hefty mitts throughout and I had lots of really nice comments from the Goldstar strangers.
