T.O.D.

Growing up I think we mostly watched Huntley and Brinkley, although in my grandmother's room it was always Walter Cronkite.

As an adult, I think my favorite was Peter Jennings.  Sticking with ABC, I really liked Diane Sawyer, and now David Muir.

I also enjoy Anderson Cooper, but I think I like him just as much on New Year's Eve with Kathy Griffin as I do a serious newsman.

TOD

Growing up before I we had cable we only had CBS and NBC from over the air. Walter Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley were always favorites. In Canada I can't remember who did the early evening news but there were quite a few good good ones late evening news host whose names escape me at the moment.

TOD Part 2

NOW
I absolutely hate local news and don't watch it.

Also don't watch TV that early in the evening when the network news is on.

I currently enjoy MSNBC news programs

Hate Fox news

Also like Anderson Cooper

Otherwise, I like Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow and David Muir.

Well, after the movie that I saw last night (it was VERY graphic, sexually) with friends of mine, we went to a local diner and ate and chatted and just enjoyed each other's company.  I didn't get home until about 1:30 a.m.

I got in yesterday's post the 14th season of Midsomer Murders and I watched the first episde last night, along with a rather syrupy movie The Christmas Candle.  It's one of those films that make me think, one more rewrite might have fixed its problems. It had a good cast, but the costumes were 1880s yet the year was around 1900, and I never could tell the time span of the actual plot.

I grew up on Huntley-Brinkley, Cronkite, and "Meet The Press," thanks to my dad.

I can remember coming home from grade school to my mother watching the HUAC activities on the television, although I honestly do not know to this day what my parents' feelings about McCarthy were.  I suspect if Ugly Joe McCarthy were alive today, he'd be running in the GOP race and a hero on the fear-mongering Faux News, breeding ground of opinions I oppose and mostly detet.

Today, I watch the PBS News Hour when I remember it and the CBS News at 6:30 after I watch the local news.

I worked for the Society of Professional Journalists for two years as the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director.  It was very interesting, I traveled a lot, and I met a LOT of people.

This was in the early 1990's when the changeover to the electronic media was just beginning.

As MR BK said, there is very little REAL journalism anymore.  Anyone with a computer can write a blog and become an EXPERT....no need for fact checking or taking responsibility for what you write.  No thinking needed.
Title: Re: FEELING THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

When I was growing up - the evening news was only 15 minutes long.  We usually watched Huntley-Brinkley because that was the program that came on after Frances Farmer Presents on Channel 6.

Walter Cronkite was the second choice until junior high, then I liked him better.  Earlier in grade school, I hated to come home and find a special report from Pauline Frederick who had the United Nations beat on NBC....she was old, but she knew what she was talking about.

Nowadays, I get most of my news from the computer.  I don't read a newspaper regularly.  I don't get people who go crazy about what some news network is reporting.  If you don't like it, watch another channel!  News is as specialized as everything else is now.  You can find what you want to hear if you look long enough.

TOD: I didn't really watch TV news when I was growing up. It was something my parents did. They watched John Chancellor.

When I got to college, I fell for anything Linda Ellerbee did. Her writing was always intelligent and informed and iconoclastic.

Worst was Connie Chung. I remember when she interviewed k.d. lang early in her career and she couldn't figure out how to ask the singer if she were a lesbian, so she came up with some ridiculous question about buying cherries jubilee for a woman. To which lang answered, something to the effect of I don't know what cherries jubilee is, Connie. (Chung was worse on the news than she was was on her own news magazine.)

There's a news story that songwriter Luigi Creatore ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Can't Help Falling in Love") has died. I thought he died a couple of years ago.

I guess it was George David Weiss who died a few years ago.

I have the TV on for company.  I wish the soaps had real composers.  All I'm hearing are public domain Christmas carols as continuous muzak: minor keys for over-emoted or pathetically sad scenes and major keys for happier moments.

Got some good news and bad news from my sister Annaliese today. She has had her position reduced from full-time to part-time. She thinks that the university will continue to offer her free tuition while she finishes her doctorate, which is good for her. A lightening of the work load while she studies will be welcome. It's also good that her son, who starts college next fall, is receiving a raft-load of fully paid four-year scholarships. And her husband's insurance will likely cover her.

She has been severely stressed of late, but losing money is never good.

With less to do, she may be able to pay more attention to her health.

That's great, Larry!  Very good news!

Thursday morning greetings!  My day started with a nosebleed and Fr. Richard's with a call that a parishioner died overnight.

Hopefully, the nose stopped bleeding quickly.  And my condolences to the family of the parishioner. :(

Thanks for the suggestions George, however, if I purchase anyting it will be for my Nook and not for the oversized iPad :)
My Nook is smaller.

But Jane, the headphone jack isn't.  That's a standard size.

😁

I don't want to wear earplugs.
