I grew up on Huntley-Brinkley, Cronkite, and "Meet The Press," thanks to my dad.

I can remember coming home from grade school to my mother watching the HUAC activities on the television, although I honestly do not know to this day what my parents' feelings about McCarthy were.  I suspect if Ugly Joe McCarthy were alive today, he'd be running in the GOP race and a hero on the fear-mongering Faux News, breeding ground of opinions I oppose and mostly detet.

Today, I watch the PBS News Hour when I remember it and the CBS News at 6:30 after I watch the local news.

I worked for the Society of Professional Journalists for two years as the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director.  It was very interesting, I traveled a lot, and I met a LOT of people.

This was in the early 1990's when the changeover to the electronic media was just beginning.

As MR BK said, there is very little REAL journalism anymore.  Anyone with a computer can write a blog and become an EXPERT....no need for fact checking or taking responsibility for what you write.  No thinking needed.

When I was growing up - the evening news was only 15 minutes long.  We usually watched Huntley-Brinkley because that was the program that came on after Frances Farmer Presents on Channel 6.

Walter Cronkite was the second choice until junior high, then I liked him better.  Earlier in grade school, I hated to come home and find a special report from Pauline Frederick who had the United Nations beat on NBC....she was old, but she knew what she was talking about.

Nowadays, I get most of my news from the computer.  I don't read a newspaper regularly.  I don't get people who go crazy about what some news network is reporting.  If you don't like it, watch another channel!  News is as specialized as everything else is now.  You can find what you want to hear if you look long enough.

TOD: I didn't really watch TV news when I was growing up. It was something my parents did. They watched John Chancellor.

When I got to college, I fell for anything Linda Ellerbee did. Her writing was always intelligent and informed and iconoclastic.

Worst was Connie Chung. I remember when she interviewed k.d. lang early in her career and she couldn't figure out how to ask the singer if she were a lesbian, so she came up with some ridiculous question about buying cherries jubilee for a woman. To which lang answered, something to the effect of I don't know what cherries jubilee is, Connie. (Chung was worse on the news than she was was on her own news magazine.)

I just heard from my friend who is not reacting well to the treatment. My dad crashed and burned with chemotherapy, so this news only worries me.

On happier news, I've had a request about possible vocal arranging/orchestrating for an Irish trio.

I also didn't watch the news on purpose growing up.

Here is my opinion on women broadcasters: I hate baby voices. I don't trust you if you talk in a little girl voice. You don't sound professional.

Continued vibes for the friend of DR ELMORE.

I've been to Holy Trinity to pray this morning, I've discussed my fears with a mutual friend, and broke down and sobbed. Color me scared.

On a positive note, my apartment smells of garlic, onion and chicken.  The broth is cooling and I have a boiled chicken to dissect.  Therapy.

There's a news story that songwriter Luigi Creatore ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Can't Help Falling in Love") has died. I thought he died a couple of years ago.

I guess it was George David Weiss who died a few years ago.

Thanks, DR Elmore - so far, so good.  Fr. Richard is busy now planning the service which will take place Saturday morning in Lima (we'll go up Friday evening).  And I've been setting up the dining room for tonight's gathering of my book group.  We're going to color together.
