In about 15 minutes I will begin the laundry, then make the bed. Holy Trinity was closed yesterday afternoon so I could not go over to pray for my family and friends. I would like to accomplish that this morning.

I'll need a nap later in the day.

We'll have a nice breakfast of eggs, ham, and homemade coffee cake and open our presents from each other. We'll visit Mom on our way to Cincinnati, where there's a party at Richard's brother's house for parents of absent adult kids. Ours will be home when we get back because Rob has to go to work at midnight.

Last night I discovered that our inside building door has a jammed lock and one cannot get into the building since the key will not turn. I rang every apartment in the building until someone let me in. I phoned the super, left a message about the problem and stuck a wad of paper in the lock so no one would be stuck outside. Someone's removed the paper and I was locked out this morning. I don't know how many neighbors I woke, but I rang every apartment bell to be let in.

Post by: elmore3003 on December 25, 2015, 06:18:40 AM: The place is vacuumed, the rugs are in the dryers, the clothes are waiting on the dryers, and I've been to church to pray. I guess it's timer to open my Christmas cards and package. I got a check, two gift certificates for Amazon.com and one for Barnes & Noble, so I did pretty well. Sadly, one card informed me that a mutual friend of the sender and mine lost his wife after a long battle with cancer.

I'm bummed that I am giving no gifts at the moment, but there will be rainchecks, hopefully.

Well, I took my daughter to Disneyland in November when we were in the LA area for my final conference. And I am buying a water heater for my son and DIL. So I spent lots of money. Just nothing wrapped.

On Tuesday it is supposed to be -11C(not sure what that is in F but it is freezing cold) and 15-25cm of snow. What the heck?!?!? I am not happy about that. We have had no snow. And now Sunday night is supposed to be 5-10cm and Tuesday could be ridiculous. Couldn't we have a few flurries first?

Mark and I left Thousand Oaks a few minutes after 5:00 pm and headed for the House of Pies to get the annual peanut butter pie. Traffic wasn't too bad and we got to Bruce's around 6:30 pm and he's right that the party got a bit of a slow start this year. I think there were only about four people there when we arrived, but that changed quickly. After that, Bruce's memory of the events completely departs from my memory, which I don't think has ever happened before. Yes, the family room was smoky from the log, but after about half an hour of discussing what to do about it, a very tall gentlemen grabbed some kind of tool and closed and opened the flue again (Bruce wasn't in the room at that moment). That seemed to do the trick and the smoke was mostly going up the chimney and very little coming in the room and people were commenting that now there was more smoke in the area between the kitchen and the family room and the family room was fairly clear. And so we all stayed there for another good hour or so. I don't recall ever seeing the log put out, not that I doubt that it was, but it must have been some time later. Eventually, so many people arrived that the party split up into half being in the family room and half being in the kitchen, but that happens every year because not everyone can fit in the family room. And, yes, we all eventually moved into the living room with the piano, but again, that happens every year. We were not chased out of the family room by smoke, to my recollection. Mark will probably tell a story that's half way in between Bruce's memory and mine.

The running joke of the evening (because Bruce kept asking Sami to re-tell the story) was that Sami hears heavy breathing from Sarah's room in the middle of the night because Sarah is always in her room doing sit-ups. (Sarah has lost about 20 pounds this past year and really looks terrific.) But naturally Bruce was convinced that Sarah is bringing male suitors into her bedroom through a window in the middle of the night. Sami kept exclaiming, "Her door is open! I can see her doing sit-ups!" but Bruce kept teasing her - it was pretty funny.

Of course the crowning glory of the party was the second half in the living room around the piano. Barry Pearl, Mark and I and a couple other people moved there first and we knew if we just waited there on the couch long enough, the show would begin. Meanwhile, Barry (sitting on my left) lamented that he has something great coming down the pike, but he absolutely can't talk about it because he had to sign some kind of confidentiality agreement. So, the gentleman sitting on my right kept guessing, it-has-to-be-this or it-has-to-be-that, like he thought he could coerce Barry into revealing his big secret, but Barry held firm and couldn't confirm or deny any guesses. So, it will be interesting to see next year what that turns out to be.

The "show" proceeded just as Bruce described. His epic song got many big laughs. It's really wonderful and it's not too long and goes by pretty quickly because it's so entertaining. "The Impossible Dream" was sort of an odd song choice from James Mulligan, but his voice really is incredible. Sami wanted to sing "Suddenly It Happens" but she didn't have the lyrics. She kept searching for them on her phone and couldn't find them, but I think she found a video of Jenna Lea Rosen singing it. So, she went off to do something with that and came back minutes later and was ready to do the song. Now, I don't know what she did in those few minutes because she certainly didn't have time to transcribe all those lyrics, but somehow how the song was sung and it was lovely.

A little after 9:30 pm, just when people were murmuring that it didn't look like Richard Sherman would be appearing, he and his wife did appear. He told the story of the song "Christmas in New Orleans" and how the song is a big hit in New Orleans, but no one else has ever heard of it. And the second song Bruce did from the LA revue was also wonderful. I think Richard Sherman has become a very big Bruce Kimmel fan because he stood behind the piano, reading the music, listening to Bruce sing, tapping his toe with a smile on his face, and enjoying the song very much. Bruce wrote today: "I can’t imagine how that must feel to a fifteen-year-old, to be accompanied by a legend." I doubt Sami sees Richard that way - she's too young and has known him too long. But Bruce, I can't imagine how that must feel for YOU to be admired by a legend. It must be a dream come true.

Tonight I'll cook some fresh broccoli and have a bit more stew and potatoes. I would haver cooked the broccoli for lunch but i have no more space in my kitchen to do anything.

I LOVE Miss Fisher. I bought S3 sight-unseen, unusual for me. I do feel they've maintained the quality of the writing and they've kept the same, wonderful characters. How/where are you watching it? Netflix?

Yesterday afternoon, I started to feel a tingling numbness on the left side of my face, neck, shoulder and left arm. Of course, Sandy and I are thinking "possible stroke," since both my father and maternal grandmother died from strokes. Thus, about 2 o'clock, she rushed me to the emergency room, where I was subjected to a bunch of tests and admitted to the hospital.

I didn't get a wink of sleep last night because somebody at the hospital screwed up and did not put my medications onto the computer, so I was not given my sleeping pill.

Today, I had an MRI and a couple of other tests and, thankfully, they all came back negative. I was released me around 4 o'clock.

The likely culprit is the stenosis and arthritis in my neck, which my regular doctor is going to give me an injection to "cure" in about a week.

Fingers crossed that it will solve the problem.

I bought Season 3 as soon as it was announced with a bit of my lecture money.

My corner bodega is open every day. I'm not sure of the supermarkets like Gristedes or the Red Apple, but the bodega is a fast easy place to shop.

I was really with them the whole time whether at their house or at my brother's. I wish I was a little closer. When I lived near them, I helped them out everyday. Now they need it and I just can't do it

As always, I had fun catching up with David and seeing his ever-lovin' Barbara and the kids, plus I know practically everyone there from all the years David and I have been friends. The food was incredible - I never think I'm eating too much (a slice of ham, a slice of turkey, no stuffing, one little bit of sweet potato, and kugel - which is made just for me) but then after the second helping I'm ready to burst. Oh, and some small desserts. And Cissy gave me a huge amount of kugel to take home so I'll have some tomorrow and probably Sunday, too.
