Well, you've read the notes, the notes were once again the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the once again cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: INCUMBENT!
-
Once again, I am the first poster after BK!
-
Once again, I am the first poster after BK!
And once again, I am the first poster after TCB!
;D

Today, I am not going in to work. I've taken the day off, and the family will be showing the town of Olympia to the visiting aunt and uncle from Germany. We will first meet for lunch at a local Chinese buffet restaurant, then we'll go downtown to Olympia's Farmer's Market and walk around there for a while.
-
After that, I don't know what we'll do or where we'll go, but tonight is the Pay-What-You-Can performance of "The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)." I have to get new programs printed, so I won't be galavanting around town too late into the evening. After the show, I'll go home and sleep.
-
Have a good day, all!
-
Enjoy your German family day.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Around 7:30, I will head out to my podiatrist on 22nd Street and Fifth Avenue. These days, between the damned buses and the ridiculous traffic mess, I have no idea gow long it will take. I coud once do it in 40 minutes, but my trup on Tuesday went over an hour and that was to 50th Street. The situation is outrageous.
-
When I return, I can turn my attention back to Guys & Dolls.
-
I stared at a lot of answering machines last night on Amazon.com and ordered one. I hope I can understand the set up and use.
-
More coffee.
-
Good morning, all.
Coffee!
-
Got nearly eight hours of sleep, but it doesn't feel like it.
One crazy show rehearsal dream in which I couldn't seem to understand what the conductor was beating.
Oy!
-
Sounds like a fun day, George!
-
Traffic vibes of all sort for Larry!

TOD:
With the exception of John Wayne who was a better "Rooster Cogburn" than Jeff Bridges (Wayne played the role with more humor), I think that the Coen Brothers' remake of TRUE GRIT was much better than the original.
Beyond that, I can't think of a remake of a major film that outdid the original.
-
We watched Woody Allen's IRRATIONAL MAN last night.
Not one of Woody's best.
:(
-
I didn't know the Joseph Losey M was an L.A. location film!
Too bad about those subtitles.
BK:. I haven't watched it in a while, but does Night Tide (1961) contain any shots that are particularly revealing for you? I always enjoyed the carousel setting, and there are bits of Venice... well, I need to get back to it myself.

I had a nice experience at my local Best Buy yesterday.
I went in to get the CD for BRIGHT STAR, which they didn't have in stock. They said they could order and have it delivered to me within a week. I said "Okay," but then they said there would be a $4-$5 shipping fee, so I told them to forget it. I'd try Wal-Mart or Target. At that point, the manager said that they would wave the shipping fee and the deal was done.
Competition is a wonderful thing.
:)

I saw the Joseph Losey version of M on TCM a few months ago. Interesting film.
-
TOD:
The 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original is one of my favorite movies, so it doesn't replace it -- it holds its own as a genius rethinking of the story, with cinematography, use of location, score, and resulting mood that for me have grown to rank right up there with the best of 1970s cinema.
-
I would rather be asleep right now. No such luck. Have to wait until Saturday to sleep in.
How exciting is this post?!?!?!?!!! :'(

I loved the way they used Kevin McCarthy in that version.

Once again it is Thursday.
Tonight we run Act One Scenes One & Two. We shall see what we have.
It is very hot today.
-
Some good remakes have already been mentioned:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
True Grit (although I also liked John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn more)
I thought the 1994 remake of Little Women was better than the 1948 and 1933 versions.
-
Except for Winona Ryder......

TOD:
Yes, the remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was very good.
I also rather liked the remake of "Fun With Dick and Jane". I don't know that it was better than the original, but it was fun and cute and Tea Leoni is great in everything. And speaking of her, if you sort of consider "The Family Man" to be a remake of "It's a Wonderful Life" that's a perfectly charming movie also.
I don't know that I've seen very many remakes. The only other one I can think of was "Freaky Friday" and that didn't really hold up. But then again, even the original movie wasn't nearly as good as the book.
-
Thursday morning greetings! The Mom thing I had to deal with yesterday went much more smoothly than anticipated - thanks for the vibes. It's not resolved, but I understand the process a lot better now and can proceed with some confidence.
Thank goodness Chautauqua is this week, because it's giving me something to look forward to each evening. Last night's events were moved into the auditorium at the campus due to severe thunderstorms. The seats were more comfortable than the ones in the tent, but the atmosphere just isn't the same indoors. Tonight's weather forecast is much better. Several members of my book group are going to hear Marie Curie. We've all read different books about her and will discuss them while we carpool to Hamilton and eat dinner from the food trucks.
-
I am back from seeing Dr. Corrado, my podiatrist. I like her enormously. The two buses took me exactly an hour from leaving the apartment to my arrival at 22nd and Fifth Avenue,
-
TOD:
"Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments" remakes in 1959 and 1956, respectively, are the superior films, IMO.
I much prefer the 1962 "Mutiny on the Bounty" to the Gable-Laughton classic.
I much prefer the 1963 "Cleopatra" to any other version made.
I've not seen the James Whale-directed "Show Boat", but I very much love the Keel-Grayson version (which may be considered "Show Boat Lite" by some folks).
-

"Show Boat Mangled," in my book, missing the point of the novel and the original show completely.
-
I have to go to City Center this afternoon and see Rob Berman and Joshie. That should be a lotta fun.
-
I have to agree with DR ELMORE on the James Whale SHOWBOAT.....
-
The apartment building reeks today because of the rain and humidity. The super who was here when I moved in 36 years ago was a lovely Puerto Rican who had a zillion cats. He retired around 1986 or so, and the building stinks of cat piss whenever it eains or gets really humid. Today, it's absolutely unbearable.

Aha....the law firm of Cranky & Crabby....my friend Eleanor as Aunt March and yours truly as Mr. Laurence....closing night of LITTLE WOMEN.

I am wearing my wedding vest!
-
Jackie Joseph posted on her Book Face page this morning about Ann Morgan Guilbert....it seems they were dressing room buddies during the 1958 Billy Barnes Review in LA.....she has fond memories of Ann.
They had remained friends all of these years later...
-
I have to agree with DR ELMORE on the James Whale SHOWBOAT.....
Wait! I think the mangled version is the 1950s MGM over-produced mess. I love the James Whale version. Are we still in agreement?
-
Oh.....we could be.....I don't think much of the Keel/Grayson pairing either.......
-
Not having seen the original, I still love the MGM version for the way the score is presented. I know it's not the complete score in any conceivable way, but what's there is very choice.
-
But heaven forfend that we argue over it.
-
There are so many things to gripe about going on right now in real time.
Of course, I won't discuss any of it here. But if you see me on Facebook, don't be at all surprised what you find.
-
Just for the sake of saying it:
I recorded "Till the Clouds Roll By" off TCM a few weeks ago. It was an HD presentation and it is gorgeous. I have watched it three times since recording it. So stunningly preserved. Absolutely marvelous to watch is the opening musical sequence of the original theatrical presentation of "Show Boat". It's different from what MGM would serve up a few years later, of course, but it's fun and Virginia O'Brien is hysterical.
-
Last night, I watched a non-HD presentation of Young Winston". I really love this film, and the presentation was very good.
-
I don't know how many of you got the Twilight Time Blu-ray of 1959's "The Hound of the Baskervilles." I watched it night-before-last.
Aside from the story, it's Basil Rathbone's version that is the best film approach, thus far...IMO. This one features Peter Cushing and Andre Morrell as Holmes and Watson. Chirstopher Lee is the surviving Baskerville heir. It's quite good overall, but I'd rather watch Rathbone's.

I loved the MGM version of SHOW BOAT, and that's not because Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson later became publicity clients.

To be truthful, Mr. Louis Rosen provided the music. I just played the notes. :)
(They omitted the composer credit in the program, so I asked the director to mention it in her little pre-curtain speech.)

They disregard the book, but a few of the scenes are good, especially with Ava Gardner. But I can't bring myself to like it as a whole.

This might surprise you, but I'm not really a fan of the Rathbone version. I watched it again a couple of months ago in preparation to do an on-camera interview for the Blu-ray release in the UK, and I don't think it's a well directed film. No atmosphere or suspense. Rathbone and Bruce are great, but I like their later outings, particularly THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and THE SCARLET CLAW better.
I haven't watched it in several years, but I do recall liking the Peter Cushing version of BASKERVILLES much more than the Rathbone version.

TOD:
The ManWho Knew Too Much
It's a Wonderful Life/It Happened One Christmas (only because I saw the remake first)
The Philadelphia Story is practically perfect, but I love a lot of High Society.
The Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven
One I hate:
The Manchurian Candidate
-
Vibes for Nicky and all of our animal family members.
-
Too many films are remade for "today's audiences."
Any completely unnecessary remakes you can think of, good or not?
The Lady Vanishes is one that comes to mind. I could have lived my life without driving Cybill Shepherd's impersonation of Adolph Hitler.
-
One more.

Three!

Night Tide is more Venice than Ocean Park, but there are a few shots that tickle the fancy. The subtitles on M are a shame but after five minutes I just forget they're there.
-
I'm up, I'm up - a little more than eight hours.
-
Congrats to DR CHAS SMITH & Co on his fine review.
-
Word on the street about the street is that the ROAD to the theatre was opened this morning......no more detour that took an extra ten minutes and an extra gallon of gasoline a week!
-
Off to rehearsal.....
-
How about off of page three?
-
Page three? Really?
-
Page 3. M-o-o-n...that spells page 3.

If the Golden State Warriors win tonight's basketball game, they will be repeat NBA Champions.
If that happens, there will likely be a parade in Oakland on Monday.
If that happens, I will not be coming to work on Monday, 'cause the parade goes right in front of my building, turns down the street at the intersection and comes to a halt not far enough down the street for the crowds to disperse from around my building. All the roads around my building will also be blocked off Monday morning meaning that I'd have to "talk my way through police stops and proving I work in the building on the corner which is also where I park."
I have given due notice to my boss.
-
I could stand a three-day weekend, I suppose.
-
Go Warriors.
-
Sorry 'bout that, all you Ohioans.
-
I'm getting a little impatient in my wait for the annual Barnes & Noble sale.
There are more than a few Criterion Blu ray discs I want.
-
I am home from my City Center jaunt. As I got to the bus stop my blood sugasr crashed, and I really was frightened since i had nothing with me, A nice elderly black woman waiting for the same bus gave me a cinnamon candy which was very good and did the trick. The bus ride home was very strange with one unpleasant pushy woman who made life miserable for several others.
-
Having a visit with Nick Redman shortly, and then on to sup with Lanny.
-
As it turns out, I have one extra signed musical quote from Richard Sherman. First person to pipe up gets it but act quickly. Same deal as on Indiegogo - $250.
-
Good evening !

Severe thunderstorm warnings in the DC area.

Hello!
-
Well, I've been to Chicago and back and have lived to tell the tale
-
Whilst I was there I saw SpongeBob. The Musical and i must say that it was 100% fantastic. I wish it well on it's journey to the Broadway.
-
I also saw the National Tour of The Sound of Music which was fantastic. A cousin of mine from Pennsylvania played Friedrich and he was great. The show show was very well done, directed by Jack O'Brian - and what I loved about it was it didn't try and be the movie at all. Except for the inclusion of "Something Good" in Act Two - with alternate lyrics. It was a great show.
-
I have two weeks or so before I begin my summer job, so I'm trying to stay low and keep the finances down.

Yes indeed!!!

I've been going non-stop all morning, in a good way.
Dishes still need washing though we stopped for dinner on our way home from shopping at the Woodburn Discount stores in Oregon. The place is huge. Forty-five minutes to get there, two hours to shop in two stores, an hour and a half to get home. I really hadn't eaten much in the morning. It was easy to stop at Beaches, a favorite of ours, located on the river and conveniently located between our freeway exit and home.

Lovely picture mr rand!

Page four? Really?
-
REALLY?
-
Back from a nice and fun dinner with Lanny at the Eclectic Cafe - had that same risotto dish and some mac-and-cheese for extra starch.
-
Enjoy your German family day.
Thanks, Jane! I did!
-
Sounds like a fun day, George!
It was, Fred! We went down to the local (closed) brewery and walked around the park and the Deschutes River. We then went to the Olympia's farmers market, then we walked around the capitol building. Finally, we went to my sister's house and I crashed.
-
I left my sister's house, got the programs printed, got some food, and now I'm at the theater.

Ditto!!

The show is about to start and we have 11 people. Nice!

Good first laugh! :D
-
Great photo, JRand.
-
The laughing continues! A VERY good sign!
-
Went to an interesting new show this evening called 14. The director created it for his 14-year-old daughter. It was a dance piece about growing up in a post-9/11 world.
-
There were some haunting images, some good music.
-
The piece was surprising because it was so unlike the rest of the stuff that I've seen this theater troupe produce. Last year, they did Carnage, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, True West and The Irish Curse.
This season, they presented an Italian puppet theater troupe doing Pinnochio, a one-woman show about the slaughter of the Amish girls in Pennsylvania, a show about soccer moms, and now this.
I like the variety but I wonder what ticket holders must think.
-
Happy Bloomsday, y'all.
-
On this day, June 16, the entire novel of Ulysses takes place.
-
I didn't have time to re-read any of it, but I am listening to "Himself and Nora," a not-very-good musical version of Joyce's life with his wife.
-
Watched the rest of a rather dull "ladies' movie" from 1941 called "When Ladies Meet" with Joan Crawford, Greer Garson, Robert Taylor and Herbert Marshall. Yawn.
-
I need to get to bed.
-
Hello, 0 guests.
-
I guess we'll finish this page first.
-
It's only a post ...
-
Or two.
-
Five!
-
Good night, all.
-
Good night, John.
-
We're almost at intermission. This is a great audience.
-
It's time for act two!
-

Yes - he was on. He was great - played the Captain with a lot of heart
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
Good evening!
-
Hello, BK.
-
Where is everybody?
-
Did someone spread the word that I was on my way?
-
Wow, elmore, Ben Davis is a hottie.
-
Great photo, Jrand.
-
Congratulations, Chas, on the great review.
-
Sorry, Ron, but I am afraid you will have to work on Monday.
-
Well, you don't have to work, but there is no parade on Monday.
-
I signed up for Broadway HD today on my Roku.
-
I will try it for a month.
-
It doesn't look like there is enough content to keep my attention for too long.
-
Take away all of the Shakespeare productions and there isn't a lot left.
-
I imagine I will still have to buy the PPV of SHE LOVES ME, but it will be worth it to see one of my favorite musicals.
-
I was thinking of ordering SHE LOVES ME, too. I might, but I would have to watch it after the live broadcast.
-
Standing O! They loved it,
-
Well, I need to leave.
Be back later.
-
If you don't have a Roku, I wonder where on your TV you watch SHE LOVES ME?
-
Broadway HD does have Brent Barrett's KISS ME KATE, but I already own the DVD.
-
It also has Imelda Staunton's GYPSY which I will probably watch this week.
-
I think I have a lunch date tomorrow with my friend, Sharry.
-
The last time we talked we said let's do lunch on Friday, but I don't think we clarified which Friday.
-
One more post.
-
Six (6)
-
That was rather bold.
-
Congratulations, Chas, on the great review.
DITTO!
-
Page six? Really?
-
Just sitting here getting ready to write some notes and announce the LA show cast album CD.
-
If you don't have a Roku, I wonder where on your TV you watch SHE LOVES ME?
I'd assume that one can watch it on-line.

I'm sure you can, but they are advertising it as a "pay per view" so I would think you could watch it on your television. I can't see the whole family gathering around the iPad or the iPhone to watch a two-hour musical.
-
George, could you record a show if it was just showing on your computer?
