Thursday morning greetings! The Mom thing I had to deal with yesterday went much more smoothly than anticipated - thanks for the vibes. It's not resolved, but I understand the process a lot better now and can proceed with some confidence.

Thank goodness Chautauqua is this week, because it's giving me something to look forward to each evening. Last night's events were moved into the auditorium at the campus due to severe thunderstorms. The seats were more comfortable than the ones in the tent, but the atmosphere just isn't the same indoors. Tonight's weather forecast is much better. Several members of my book group are going to hear Marie Curie. We've all read different books about her and will discuss them while we carpool to Hamilton and eat dinner from the food trucks.

TOD:

"Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments" remakes in 1959 and 1956, respectively, are the superior films, IMO.

I much prefer the 1962 "Mutiny on the Bounty" to the Gable-Laughton classic.

I much prefer the 1963 "Cleopatra" to any other version made.

I've not seen the James Whale-directed "Show Boat", but I very much love the Keel-Grayson version (which may be considered "Show Boat Lite" by some folks).

The apartment building reeks today because of the rain and humidity. The super who was here when I moved in 36 years ago was a lovely Puerto Rican who had a zillion cats. He retired around 1986 or so, and the building stinks of cat piss whenever it eains or gets really humid. Today, it's absolutely unbearable.

Jackie Joseph posted on her Book Face page this morning about Ann Morgan Guilbert....it seems they were dressing room buddies during the 1958 Billy Barnes Review in LA.....she has fond memories of Ann.

They had remained friends all of these years later...

Not having seen the original, I still love the MGM version for the way the score is presented. I know it's not the complete score in any conceivable way, but what's there is very choice.

Just for the sake of saying it:

I recorded "Till the Clouds Roll By" off TCM a few weeks ago. It was an HD presentation and it is gorgeous. I have watched it three times since recording it. So stunningly preserved. Absolutely marvelous to watch is the opening musical sequence of the original theatrical presentation of "Show Boat". It's different from what MGM would serve up a few years later, of course, but it's fun and Virginia O'Brien is hysterical.

I don't know how many of you got the Twilight Time Blu-ray of 1959's "The Hound of the Baskervilles." I watched it night-before-last.

Aside from the story, it's Basil Rathbone's version that is the best film approach, thus far...IMO. This one features Peter Cushing and Andre Morrell as Holmes and Watson. Chirstopher Lee is the surviving Baskerville heir. It's quite good overall, but I'd rather watch Rathbone's.

(They omitted the composer credit in the program, so I asked the director to mention it in her little pre-curtain speech.)

This might surprise you, but I'm not really a fan of the Rathbone version. I watched it again a couple of months ago in preparation to do an on-camera interview for the Blu-ray release in the UK, and I don't think it's a well directed film. No atmosphere or suspense. Rathbone and Bruce are great, but I like their later outings, particularly THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and THE SCARLET CLAW better.

I haven't watched it in several years, but I do recall liking the Peter Cushing version of BASKERVILLES much more than the Rathbone version.

The Lady Vanishes is one that comes to mind. I could have lived my life without driving Cybill Shepherd's impersonation of Adolph Hitler.
