For a majority of the past twenty years, July 4 meant a party / barbecue at my friend, Patsy's house.  This is first Fourth of July since she passed away.

Louis de Funes never able cross over to any kind of popularity in North America although I was able to see several of his films when I lived in Montreal.

However one of is films was able to get some play in the U.S. called The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob in whih he played a A bigoted businessman who disguises himself as rabbi while fleeing with an Arab. Side note: In French his adventures weren't "Mad". They were just "Les aventures de Rabbi Jacob" (The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob)

Back when we had 4th of July parties we very often threw them on the 3rd and sometime on the 2nd  depending  on what day of the week the 4th fell upon
Title: Re: F@CKING, QU@CKING, AND SXX
Post by: vixmom on July 04, 2016, 04:22:53 AM
4th of July parties tend to start  early (about midday) because people  grill ,  and to run late because people have fireworks after dark
Title: Re: F@CKING, QU@CKING, AND SXX
Post by: vixmom on July 04, 2016, 04:24:59 AM
Since we had to go to work early on the 5th it was easier to have the party the day before if it was a weekend (like this year) so we could set up, throw a 10 - 12 hour party and have the next day to recuperate and clean up

I slept too long, and I had lots of strange dreams.  I remember these bits:
  1. moving out of an apartment in the theatre district to the one i am in now, I had a piano but no bench.
  2. I was at something and my friend Lara Teeter, whom I've not seen since the mid-1980s, was there.

I have my friend's annual partay to go to this evening.  Their family, who live in the south, bring up a carload of the real thing every year.  They're all very careful and experienced at this, and they have a several-acre piece of property in which to let 'em go with plenty of room to safely spread out.  This partay has been a tradition for at least the past twenty years.

Everyone have a happy and safe holiday.

I, too, have no specific memory of a special JULY 4 holiday.  I like the fireworks - although not the noise.

TOD:

1.  The year I took friends up in a plane on the evening of the 4th and flew all around the Valley and the L.A. Basin looking way down at these teeny tiny fireworks displays all over town.  There were many more of them, everywhere, than you would imagine, and from several thousand feet up, the fireworks look like they're barely getting off the ground.  But on a clear night, every one of them was like a tiny jewel.  Really unique and magical.

2.  The Fourths of 1985 and 1986 when I lived in Schaumburg, Illinois.  After living in L.A. there was something about the people and communities and town parks in the suburban Chicago Midwest that made those two Fourths a sort of Americana perfection.  I've always been glad I could experience them.

I look forward to watching/listening to the Concerto in F video.  It's been a favorite piece since I was ten, and fortunately it's been blessed with any number of good recordings.  And yes, that's right up Slatkin's alley.  Didn't he and the St. Louis release an excellent Gershwin box set on Vox?

Yes, just checked.  Still have it.  It was all the works for piano and orchestra, with Jeffrey Siegel on piano.

In 1980, I spent July 4th with college friend Peter Oberlink, who was then living in Hartford, CT.  Peter and his wife, who was a dancer in some ballet company, had split up, and I was visiting him on weekends and taking advantage of her ticket for things, like the Goodspeed production of The Happy Time or the Long Wharf production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.  We spent the morning exploring some natiobal park with a castle before we went to New Haven for a cookout by some Indian friends of his.  The husband was on the Yale faculty, and it was a wonderful meal of Indian and US food.

DR Vixmom, here's a recipe for a Blueberry-Dewberry pie. Dewberries are a type of blackberry. You can use your own choice of fruit in it. Pitted cherries, peaches, whatever goes well together.

TOD: When I was 7, we went to visit family in Germany. On the Fourth of July, we were in Heidelberg and we watched the fireworks over the ruins of the castle. There was a large gathering and a few in the crowd starting making outrageous Oooohs and Aaaaahs for each firework that went off. We've done the same in our family ever since.

Watching a really funny screwball comedy called Too Many Husbands with Jean Arthur, Fred MacMurray and Melvyn Douglas. They're both married to her and some fairly sexually tinged (for the 1940s) hijinks ensue.

It was remade later as Three for the Show with Jack Lemmon, Betty Grable and the Champions. But it lacks the charm of this dizzy delight of a movie.

TOD - when I was 12 my parents and I went on a New England vacation that included a week of camping on Mt. Desert Island.  On the 4th of July, we watched the fireworks from the pier in Bar Harbor and all the boats anchored off shore blew their horns in appreciation of the show.

Cathleen Schine?  I have not, but we heard her newest book reviewed very favorably on FRESH AIR during our drive home.  It appealed to me, but not to Richard.

Thanks. Yes, it's Cathleen. She and Jane Smiley are members of a Facebook group about Anthony Trollope, and they recently did a book signing together in which they discussed their love of Trollope as well as their current works.

The DD's and I have have been out for a dual walk.  No violence ensued so I'm always thankful for that.  DD Ben just won't relax around little DD Leo.  He snaps at him if they are off leash and are near each other.  We are getting better, however, and I realize it's a process and Papa's patience is always tested!

TOD:
I've gone to many 4th of July parties over the years. I don't know that any one was particularly more fun or memorable than any other. So, I would have to say the most unique 4th of July I ever had was going to an Oakland A's baseball game with my dad and husband-at-the-time and then staying for the fireworks afterwards.
Mark claims the best fireworks we ever saw were in the town of Ojai, but I don't remember being particularly blown away by them.
Since our dog past away a couple weeks ago and we don't have to worry about her freaking out anymore, I think we'll make the 50-minute hike on foot over to the Janss mall to see the fireworks tonight. The weather is nice and we could use the exercise. We can't drive there because the traffic is so bad after the fireworks are over that it takes longer to drive home than walk home.

Today, my sister's boyfriend is going to come over to my place with his laptop to record a hi-def movie from my DVR onto his laptop so that he can make a Blu-ray of it.  It's Bette Midler's "Divine Madness" concert film, and it's never been released on Blu-ray.  The TCM broadcast is also the original theatrical version, which has two songs never released on either the VHS or DVD versions (although one is on the album).  He'll make sure it works and then just let it record.  Then, we'll both go to my parents' for a 4th of July barbecue with the visting relatives from Gemany.

I keep thinking how much money is being exploded and burned in this neighborhood alone.

I like fireworks, but I think they are best left to the professionals.

For the last hour or so, there have been non-stop fireworks.

Here in Tumwater, too.

Nicky was apparently sleeping soundly in the living room.

The majority of the amateur pyrotechnics are outside the bedroom side of the apartment.

I guess Nicky is a little smarter than his daddy.

The Tacoma fireworks display should have started by now, but I am too tired and too sore to get dressed to go out on the balcony.

Nicky must be going deaf.  He is fast asleep, in spite of all the noise.

For the 1876 melodrama section of our float, DR Elmore dressed me as the heroine.  It was 40 years ago - where did my waistline go?

I still have the dress, the Vixter wore it a couple of years ago at one of our chili contests

Thanks for the nice comment on my dress.  I wish I still had it - and could still wear it...

Oh I could wear mine....  Of course I would moon the entire neighborhood as I could never close it... But from the front I would look great,

;D

To our surprise we can see fireworks from our place,  we finally went outside to watch, and hear, them from our back patio.  Some we could see from this side of the river while most of them were on the Portland side.

I'm recording the TCM broadcast of "1776" for my dad.  It's the original theatrical version without all the previously cut material.  He doesn't like the longer version(s)...for whatever reason.
