Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written on the wind, and now it is time for you to post until the windy cows come home.

Yes the First Nudie Musical was funny   ;D ;D ;D  ,  Bruce in particular and if you haven't seen it, you really should.  Bruce brings the physicality I loved from actors like Peter Sellers, early Steve Martin and BK is much more winsome than Jerry Lewis (who I never quite understood was adored by the French).
Conceptually a bit like The Producers and that is a good thing :)
While it's still a bit raunchy for teens, my kid laughed a lot and let's face it, kids today are exposed to much WORSE stuff in crap like "Deadpool" than a silly harmless story like FNM.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Is somebody or something in retrograde?

These past couple of weeks it's been one thing after another, and I do hope it all culminated with the absurdities of yesterday evening because I don't want to think of ways it can go on.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:20:23 AM
Soon after I arrived at the park for the final dress rehearsal of GYPSY, I got a call saying there was a power outage at the house and the generator was running things.  Whatever happened, it affected at least a few blocks because a couple of the neighbors were without it, too.  I think it was out for close to three hours.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:24:14 AM
And that outage wasn't weather-related at all, more like something blew at the big power station in town.

But at that exact point in time we were under a new threat of approaching thunderstorms, and at this outdoor venue literally everything is uncovered.  Stage, musicians, sound board, everything.  When rain comes, you scramble, and those with the larger instruments like drum sets and keyboards must keep tarps ready and waiting to cover everything.

So, what was supposed to have been a clear evening till at least midnight or something, well, best laid plans....
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:25:05 AM
But we got set up and they had started doing mic checks when the circuit(s) blew and the venue had no power.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:29:01 AM
Ten minutes later it was back up, but there were further delays and we got started, like, an hour late.

And I guess it didn't matter that this was the final dress rehearsal, because somebody was calling out some absent person's lines.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:31:45 AM
And then the circuit(s) blew again, and another ten or fifteen minutes was lost.  No one had any idea why this was happening (I guess they haven't had this problem in past shows, and this was a new thing).

But the mics weren't fully working.  And the director decided to leave work lights on.  So people on stage were going through the motions, but to call it a rehearsal at this point was absurd.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:34:15 AM
"Curtain" was supposed to have been 8 PM.  At 10 PM we had just gotten through "All I Need is the Girl" in Act 1 when the word went out that the line of thunderstorms was now approaching our region and to start packing up because that's it for the night.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:36:25 AM
Today the rain is supposed to run its course through the morning and early afternoon hours, then be cleared out for the evening.

Of course there is always the threat of a "stray" shower.

So it looks like we have a show tonight, but we'll see what happens.  Tomorrow doesn't look good at all for the evening.
Title: Re: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2016, 05:47:56 AM
I have no idea how well the show is going to run, though.

And I hate to put it this way, but I'm just glad it isn't "my" show.  I'm responsible for being there and for protecting my stuff from ruin, and that's all the worry or concern I can take on.  From my observation of the two final dress rehearsals, I don't believe this show is ready to meet its audience...to paraphrase whoever it is I'm paraphrasing.

I like this group.  They do pretty good stuff --- indoors.  But I'm unlikely to accept another outdoor gig here.  There are two other outdoor venues where we at least have basic protection from whatever the elements wish to dish out, so even if a performance gets cancelled at five minutes to curtain, it's not a disaster.  Here, there's nothing.  If I were the proverbial piccolo player, that would be fine.  But it's not fine, or fun, when you're dealing with several thousand bucks worth of heavy electronics.

A Jack Randall Earles posting on Facebook today inadvertently put a poem in my head.   This is it:

When the Frost is on the Punkin
By James Whitcomb Riley

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,
And the clackin’ of the guineys, and the cluckin’ of the hens,
And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;

O, it’s then’s the times a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,
With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here—
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;

But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries—kindo’ lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;

The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover over-head!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin’ ’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! ...

I don’t know how to tell it—but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me—
I’d want to ’commodate ’em—all the whole-indurin’ flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

I am home.

Bad day:
  1. the nurse couldn't find a vein and had to call in some help
  2. I lost the violin battle which displeases me greatly, especially since the argument for not hiring one does not hold water.
  3. I'm up to my ass i debt and have no idea when my colleague will finish Act One of Guys & Dolls so we can get paid.

We did accomplish much good work today, but I still worry about the musical side of things for Monday's reading.  That extra violin would have eased a lot of my anxiety.

Good afternoon. I debated taking my camera on my hike this morning. I usually don't in the summer, since there's not much to see; everything is in survival mode. So of course, I see not one, but TWO rattlesnakes today. That big storm that hit the mountain about ten days ago greened things up and brought critters out of hiding.

I have seen three rattlesnakes this week. That's more than I have seen on that mountain all season.

It had really looked like it was to be a nice clear and dry night.  But one large cell came straight down from Massachusetts heading for the Lawn Guyland Sound, with little ol' Monroe, CT right in the middle of its path.

It passed over an hour before show time, but took long enough passing over that there was no way they could guarantee getting the stage dry and safe for performance.  Fortunately, or so we hope and trust, our plans and dry runs for covering the instruments and later stowing them in our dry trailer seem to have gone well.

Better luck tomorrow.  Though, at this time, they're saying "chance of thunderstorms".

Regarding yesterday's notes: I love the score for Silk Stockings, but I've always found the film faded, not what you need when one of your songs is called "The Red Blues."

I also find that while I love listening to the score, Ninotchka didn't need music. So, the project as a whole didn't work, no matter how mcuh charm Fred Astaire has and how much sex Cyd Charisse exudes, especially during the title number.

I saw a new musical tonight, apparently its first public unveiling.  Bring back the veil, boys, because you ain't ready and will probably never BE ready.  The single worst piece of crap I've ever seen.  I'd love to tell you that act two was an improvement on act one but I wasn't there to find that out.

Drew Barrymore is sooo young.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (region 2 DVD from England) and I thought the exact same thing about them...they were all so young!
